Andre Johnson should get the deal that he wants

A. Johnson5.jpgAndre Johnson has five years left on his contract, but it looks like the Texans will happily give him more money anyway.

From ESPN’s Chris Mortensen: “Texans owner Bob McNair made it clear he’s going to reward Andre Johnson w a huge contract soon. I’d say by preseason opener Aug. 14.”

Johnson briefly sat out of OTAs this summer, but quickly returned for work after hiring a new agent.  He also quietly showed up for training camp on time and didn’t express serious concern about his contract.

Now we know why.

You can argue that the Texans are setting a bad business precedent for the the team, but we don’t fully buy it.  There just aren’t other players like Andre Johnson.

Still, other NFL owners won’t love the concept behind this deal.  While other front offices hide behind “labor uncertainty,” McNair appears ready to reward a player signed through 2014 out of the goodness in his heart.

Hope he retires as a Texan

Easy for me to say this since it’s not my money, but he deserves every penny of it. He is as class as class can be and he flat out produces. Anything less than a very favorable deal would be unacceptable, despite the fact that Andre agreed to the long, lower money deal already.

McNair’s doing what’s right. Johnson deserves to be the top paid WR. And this solidifies that Johnson will be a Texan for his entire career!

How f*ckin’ good would Brees, Manning or Brady be if they had Andre? As far as I’m concerned, he’s worth every cent his QB is, whoever that QB may be.

i drafted this dude to my fantasy team as my sleeper wide receiver his first 2 seasons. what a STUD! course, after that the cat was outta the bag so i had to draft him early…. good t0 hear some owners are willing to pay a guy who’s proven he deserves it. i’m pretty sure his track record shows he won’t turn into a turd either. good job, texans.

Best WR in the NFL for quite some time now. Classy move by the Texans.

I wouldn’t say it’s out of the goodness in his heart. It’s more like a sound business decision. Guys that play at an elite level should be rewarded. If I had 50M to spend on a player I’d give it to Johnson before I’d give it to Bradford.

Give him what he wants. Let’s keep him in Houston until he retires.
This offense is going to be awesome this year.

How sick are the Texans going to be this year?
Andre, Schaub, and that beast of a TE.
Im a Skins fan through and through but i harbor no ill-will for this franchise.
    Good luck H-town

It’s cheaper to pay him NOW, McNair. He’s still going to be a stud until (at least) 2014. A deal done later (2012-2013) will likely cost more $ & could start to show diminishing returns anytime after 2014.
Pay da man. You will get your money’s worth. He earned it…& in one of the classiest ways ever. If you wait until 2014, you’ll end up paying him for what he’s done in the past.

Other teams shouldn’t worry about the Texans paying the best receiver in football like the best receiver in football.
What they should be worried about is when teams pay players who AREN’T the best player at their position like the best player at their position.
You know… like Eric Berry(who hasn’t played a down in the NFL) getting the richest contract for a safety in NFL history.
And people wonder why Ed Reed is mad.

Chris Johnson has got to be watching this with anger.
Andre is getting rewarded for outplaying a contract while Chris is getting told by his front office he’s a greedy SOB who should be glad to be playing for that $250,000 base salary.

    Texans in 2009:
#1 passing offense in the NFL
#30 rushing offense in the NFL
They get a running game they are really going to be dangerous.

I take it that you’ve never heard of Moss, Wayne, Welker or Harrison.
