Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas reports that injured Cowboys rookie Dez Bryant hasn’t ruled out a preseason return. Bryant, who suffered a severe high right ankle sprain during Friday’s training camp practice, is reportedly aiming to return for the team’s exhibition finale.
The Cowboys’ last preseason game is on September 2 against the Dolphins. Bryant’s timetable for return has been set at 4-6 weeks, so playing in the game would mean his recovery met the most optimistic end of that time frame. The Cowboys open the regular season in almost exactly six weeks.
Though Bryant could use the reps -- he’s appeared in just three games since the 2008 football season -- we’re skeptical the Cowboys would rush him back. As Falcons running back Michael Turner can attest, high ankle sprains are highly susceptible to re-aggravation.
Also worth noting: Peter King of SI.com dined with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Friday night, and came away with the impression that Dallas’ front office is confident Bryant will be ready for Week One. Bryant will probably begin the season slowly, but should maintain the potential to make a sizable first-year impact.
Before the injury, Bryant was slated to return punts, play in all three-receiver sets, and perhaps bring back some kickoffs. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Cowboys were intent on getting Bryant “as many touches as possible.”
