Colts owner says he'll use franchise tag on Manning, if necessary

Earlier this year, Colts owner Jim Irsay acknowledged that quarterback Peyton Manning will be the highest-paid player in the league, once Manning signs his next contract.

As we pointed out at the time, the fact that Manning will top all other players in the NFL is a fairly easy observation.  The harder question is by how many dollars will he surpass No. 2 on the list?

Irsay indicated on Monday that, if the two sides can’t come up with a mutually acceptable answer to the “by how much?” question, the Colts will simply use the franchise tag.

“The bottom line is we’ll get something done and when it happens just
depends,” Irsay said, per the Associated Press. “I
said he’d be the highest-paid player and he may already be if we go with
the [franchise] tag.  I’d love to see him be here and break all those records as a
Colt.”

Under the current rules, using the franchise tag on Manning would require the team to offer him a one-year guaranteed salary of $18.96 million.  The Colts applied the tag to Manning several years ago; they shortly thereafter negotiated his current deal.

Of course, Irsay’s intent to use the tag presumes that the tag will still exist come the launch of the next labor deal.  There’s a chance that it won’t.  And, if it isn’t, Manning would be available to the highest bidder.

Even if Manning stays, there’s no guarantee that he’ll “break all those records.”  If Brett Favre plays for a few more years, Manning won’t even sniff those records.

Favre wishes he were half as good as Manning’s worst.

The franchise tag under the current rules ties the minimum 20% bump to not only the player’s base salary, but to base salary plus other bonuses and prorations (basically, to what the player’s cap hit would be, in a capped year). So, to tag Manning under the hypothetical current-rules-applied-next-year would take a 20% bump over not just $15.8 million, but $19,266,666. So, more than $23 million.

Yeah, Brett will certainly maintain his interception record. Brett Favre should always be remembered as a moron who ruined a good reputation. Let him retire in a Viking jersey.

    Your 2012 starting QB’s:

It would be the bizarro NFL.

Manning is 6 or so years younger than Brett and is already miles ahead of him at the same point in their careers. Manning is also just as tough/iron man.
So those records will be his unless he suffers a major injury.
Manning tossed his 350th TD pass in game 185, it took Favre 196 to throw his 350th.
Manning passed 50k yards in game 191, an accomplishment that it too Favre 211 games to accomplish.
    Through 12 years.
    Manning 4232/6531 64.8% 50,128 366td 181 int 86.7 rating.
    Favre 3652/5992 60.9% 42,285 314 td 188 int 86.7 rating.
Yeah Manning has a whole season worth of #’s but that is because he was good enough to start from day one.
Manning is 19,201 yards behind Favre and 131 Td’s behind him.

  6. NashvilleSeahawk says: Aug 2, 2010 4:19 PM

Manning should be so lucky to sniff Favre’s jock. What an overrated player and person.

BS Meat – there’s never been a more protected quarterback in the league than Manning – Peyton’s a lot of things but tough’s not necessarily one of them.

  13. perm says: Aug 2, 2010 4:37 PM

@Florio-is-a-tool: Trouble is brewing in Indy? There is exactly a 0% chance that Peyton is going anywhere else. They franchised him last time so they could figure out what was fair to pay him.
There is no trouble brewing regarding Peyton Manning in any way, shape or form.
Also, Brett Favre can play 10 more years and Peyton would still have all of Favre’s meaningful records broken. Manning’s stats now compared to Favre’s at the same point in Favre’s career are better in every meaningful category.

——————————————————How you figure, Manning has said a number of times he wants to retire a Colt so regardless of what other offers is presented, if it comes to that, Manning would have the last say so.

  19. JaggedMark says: Aug 2, 2010 4:47 PM

Manning won’t sniff Favre’s record, because he’ll never play at such a high level for so long. More than likely he’ll also not play that long (injury free). And when he is 40 yrs old will he put up pro bowl #’s like Favre.
Not to mention, that Favre has always been athletic and Manning is definitely not.

  20. habibfromnewdehli says: Aug 2, 2010 4:56 PM

Would LOVE to see Peyton leave Indy, and prove just how much he makes their team. He could go to ANY team and instantly people would know who previous no-name receivers are. He would make the Redskins offensive line look more than decent. And because he keeps the ball for so damn long… whatever defense was on that team would automatically look better.

  21. wrekOgnize says: Aug 2, 2010 4:59 PM

Peyton is great, but played in dome through out his career.
Except for last year, Brett played outdoors through out his career. Can be cold, snowy or Rainy.
    No comparison.
I would love to see Bretts stats if he played in a dome.

  24. downwithdansnyder says: Aug 2, 2010 5:01 PM

  26. BenRapistberger says: Aug 2, 2010 5:19 PM

Wow. They’d actually use the franchise tag on him? Really? I can’t believe it! I’m surprised they wouldn’t just let him walk if they didn’t come to an agreement! Good story, this should be all over the news!
In other news, Tom Brady may ALSO be franchise tagged! But because he’s a Patriot, and Florio knows everyone either LOVES or HATES the Patriots, he’s going to keep talking about that one because it drives traffic.

  27. ejtowne says: Aug 2, 2010 5:30 PM

Peyton is a great QB but, Favre is a better one. If i was running a team, I would choose Farve over Manning any day. Favre doesn’t need a spectacular offensive line, Manning requires it. Numbers don’t mean shit without that ring on your finger. So i don’t judge that way.

  28. monet99 says: Aug 2, 2010 5:30 PM

I think Bradshaw is is underrated also. But you cant just count rings. Football is a team game.
Otherwise Trent Dilfer is better then Dan Marino.

  29. MSWRavens says: Aug 2, 2010 5:42 PM

Meat Tuperello…you must have typed it wrong…Manning cannot have better numbers in every statistical category your listed and have the same passer rating as the world’s biggest drama queen.
would love to see the Forehead go elsewhere and watch the Colts suck for another twenty years!!!

It could prove the opposite too. PM is a very skilled PASSER, yes but his whole team is built on providing him with 1st round draft pick offensive skill players and he’s had the same exact system and OC his entire career, (this will be his first without Moore) No other QB in the entire NFL can say that.

  33. Meat Tuperello says: Aug 2, 2010 5:58 PM

    @If your not first.
Well you do know something about BS, since you are spewing it.
Manning has missed 1 play due to injury and that was after breaking his jaw, in a game vs. Miami in which he returned to play and then continued to play with his mouth wired shut in the following weeks.
About the OL, Manning makes the OL look far better than they are. The reason he’s protected is that he gets rid of the ball quicker than anyone in the game. If you put Kurt Warner, or Roethlisberger or most any other qb behind that OL then they will collect sacks like they are going out of style as they have during your careers.

  34. CYGNUS X-1 says: Aug 2, 2010 6:07 PM

Paytons good, but the bEST EVER? Give me a break, and as for breaking any records? Hes not even close to the 5th or 10th ranked QB in #’s and like they say if farve plays a year or two more, he’ll never catch himm, Paytons already going into what his 12th year, Farve will be 19 or 18 I forget, but theres also recorfds neithe one of those two ever will touch. For example, MOst come fro behind wins Elway 47, weres mamming 12 or 13 if its even that High, Yards throwing, Hell have to throw 5000 yards for the rest of his career, play till hes 45 and still not touch Farve or Marino, yards rushing, Elway, Tarkington,Youn(steve that is)Vick! Need I say More? And Iagree with ToolofTools , Weres the Four ring and Three ring players at, why arent bradshaw, Montana, Elaways has two played in , ow many has mannng won one, How many has he appeared in, One! Nuff said(besides when history is done and over TEBOW will own all the records and Denver will have played in more Bowls that any team ever!)

    Cushing Will Kill You,
Are you serious? Aren’t they both 1-1 in super bowls? Aren’t they both first ballot HOFers? Quit hating Favre for the bs he pulled on your team. He also won you a Super Bowl. Besides, Aaron Rodgers isn’t a bad replacement; I’d love to have him on my team. Or are you just mad because Favre owned you guys (and probably will again) last year?
Just for the record, I’m neither a Packer or Colts fan.

  40. thehoodedone says: Aug 2, 2010 8:28 PM

Neither Favre or Manning are tough. They both chuck the ball and turtle at the first sign of pass rush. Stand and deliver. That’s tough.

    @Don From C/S
That was the world’s worst post.
“Hes not even close to the 5th or 10th ranked QB in #’s ”
Manning is already 4th all time for passing yards. He is about 11k behind Marino (who is second), which he will easily pass in the next 3 years.
The rest of your post is equally dumb, but I don’t have the time to explain why. Don’t pull ‘statistics’ out of your ass.

  42. BigShorty says: Aug 2, 2010 9:02 PM

I am huge Brett Favre fan, i admire how he goes about the game, has anyone ever thought that maybe hes not an egotistical asshole?? Maybe he just loves football to much to call it quits. Dont get me wrong Manning is a better overall QB, but I definitely agree with Chilly , favre has only played in a dome for one year and he threw for over 4,000 yards, 34 td’s and only 7 picks. Imagine those stats for 20 years and tell me if anyone would get close to his records. But I do believe Manning is the better QB overall. You guys ride Brett too hard I think he just loves the game too much to walk away. And I dont blame him for not wanting to participate in training camp……lol

  43. Meat Tuperello says: Aug 2, 2010 9:56 PM

    @Don From C/s
Others have already proven how ignorant you are with your foolish and flat out wrong statements about where Manning stands from a statistical perspective.
You quoted Elway with 47 come back victories.
Manning already has 43 come back victories. You quoted 12 or 13. Hell, he had that over the past two seasons including matching his NFL record of 7 in one season last year.
    Elway played 16 years
    Manning has played 12.
    Games
    Favre 289
    Marino 242
    Elway 234
    Manning 192
    TD’s to INT
    Favre 497-317
    Marino 420-252
    Manning 366-181
    Elway 300-226
    Yards
    Favre 69329
    Marino 61361
    Elway 51475
    Manning 50128
    QB Wins
    Favre 181
    Elway 148
    Marino 147
Manning 131 Odds are he gets 17 over the next 4 years to pass your great Elway
So don’t even bring Elway into the conversation.
Tebow????? He won’t start 50 games at quarterback in the NFL much less break any records…. Get a clue.

  44. Halasfan says: Aug 3, 2010 9:33 AM

I think Manning will catch and beat most of the important records or at least be really close. He won’t get to 4 rings but I think he will get 1 more, maybe 2.
He is averaging 4177 yards a years so with gueesing he has 5 more years to play that will be an additional 20886 yards which gets him to 71,014 yards for a career putting him probably rigth behind Lord Farve and Damon Allen for all time yards for a pro Qb. Allen was CFL so I guessing he doesn’t count.
He is also averaging 30.5 TD a year so that is another 152 TD for the rest of he career giving him a total of 518. Unless he tries to out do the 49 he got a while back. Farve three 33 last year. He will cross the 500 mark in the first couple game this year.
Now if Manning can play into his 40′s like the grand old man Farve himself he will have most of the records in the bag. Of course, it would be almost impossible for him to catch Farve record 317 Int.
