Report: Schobel expects release, wants to talk to other teams

We noted just an hour ago that the Bills have decided to move on from Aaron Schobel, and said how difficult it will be to trade him.

They aren’t going to try.

NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora says Schobel was informed the Bills will cut him.  More importantly, Schobel is “very much interested” in talking to other teams.  (So basically he wanted out of Buffalo and got what he wanted.)

There should be a healthy market for Schobel’s services, even this late in the offseason.  Here are some teams that would make sense on paper.  (Speculation warning.  We’re just throwing stuff against the wall here.)

1. The New England Patriots: Changing schemes could make this an awkward fit, but the Patriots desperately need a pass rusher.  No player has sacked Tom Brady more times and Bill Belichick loves getting guys that have hurt his team.

2. The Houston Texans: Schobel lives nearby and they could use another pass rusher. Some teams that make sense on paper.

3.  Tennessee Titans: They like veterans  and could use an end.

4. Atlanta Falcons: Another team short at defensive end.  Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff say Schobel plenty in the AFC East.

Maybe Schobel could sack Bill Belidick.

Gregg, did you wake up about 5 minutes ago because some of your sentences just don’t make sense:

They should not release him. He is on the did not report/retirement list. They dont have to do anything until he shows up to camp. They dont owe him a dime. They can squat on his rights.
Dont give that baby what he wants.
That or release him the night before the first game.

You mean you can actually touch Brady without him crying about it or getting flagged for it?

  5. numberfour says: Aug 2, 2010 12:53 PM

    daytwa.
but i expect schobel to aim for something close to home.

  6. CJ SPILLER says: Aug 2, 2010 12:54 PM

Only reason Schobel sacked Brady so much was because Brady really wanted to tune Aaron Schobel’s meatwhistle.

  7. Zach says: Aug 2, 2010 12:57 PM

Add Bengals. Odom is coming off torn achillis, without his the rush was poor last year, could use the depth even with Johnson/Dunlap/etc.

  8. aaron276h says: Aug 2, 2010 1:12 PM

hopefully the patriots can pick him up, definetly a much better pick up then ogunlye

  9. ch19079 says: Aug 2, 2010 1:12 PM

He is a 4-3 DE. The bills switched to a 3-4 D where he would have to play OLB. Hes not a OLB. He was talking retirement. Sounds liek he wants to play 1-2 more years, just not as a 3-4 DE or OLB. I understand. I respect Schobel a lot. I was expecting him to retire, so I didnt expect him on the team this year anyways.
I hope he has sucess elsewhere, as long as it isnt within the division.

  10. HarrisonHits says: Aug 2, 2010 1:12 PM

He’s gonna look good in a Pats uni.

  11. jwill007 says: Aug 2, 2010 1:14 PM

    Zach,
Damn you are in my head! I would sign this MO FO in heartbeat…He is a WAY BETTER Justin Smith would look very nice in passing situations….
M Johnson, Fanene, Odom and Schobel on Passing downs would be sick on 3rd and long!

  12. CollegeToPros says: Aug 2, 2010 1:15 PM

New England is waiting for you Schobel. come play at OLB in the 3-4.

  13. Belichick Is God says: Aug 2, 2010 1:21 PM

Recall that vs. pass-happy teams like the Colts the Pats play a base nickel anyway, so his lack of 3-4 OLB experience is not an issue.
Come “graduate” to NE, Aaron… a situational rush DE out of the nickel package, not in the base 3-4. He’s a perfect fit!

The Bucs need another end, if they can afford it.

  15. Ytsejamer1 says: Aug 2, 2010 1:32 PM

man…do we ever need him!!! He’d be a definite upgrade over the retiring/confused Burgess. *drool*…hope this can happen!
It’s almost like the Milloy thing, in reverse…but i hope the end result isn’t exactly the same! :)

  16. hasnivek says: Aug 2, 2010 1:35 PM

He wanted to be cut all along- so he didn’t have to pay back any of the signing bonus from the 6 year deal he signed in 2007. He was never going to retire, because then the Bills could make a claim on a portion of the bonus paid.

How about the SEAHAWKS??!! Hello – Chris Clemons and Lawrence Jackson as starting DE’s with little proven depth!!!

Sorry Gregg Rosenthal, but Chris Brown of Buffalobills.com just reported that the Bills will NOT cut Aaron Schobel. I don’t know where you have gotten your information from but, It’s wrong.

    ++++++++++++++++++++
Reminds me of the interview after Dimitroff got the job in Atlanta.
reporter-Thomas, what are your immediate plans now that you’ve taken over the GM post?
Dimitroff-Well, Schobel, I think that this team Schobel, Schobel, errr, Schobel, great year, Schobel.
reporter-Wow, you sure say “Schobel” a lot.
Dimitroff- Schobel, sure, I Schobeled quite a bit while in the AFC East, Schobel Schobel.
Seriously guys, two really stupid mistakes in a matter of a couple articles. Pay the $50 a day or whatever it is and hire a freaking proofreader. This is like reader a 3rd grader’s composition book… Schobel Schobel.

  22. BengalsDouche2 says: Aug 2, 2010 1:56 PM

Yeah I’d say Bengals may be interested especially since Dunlap already suffered a concussion. And with the injury Odom is coming off of, you just never know. But don’t hold your breath. Mikey boy is gonna close that wallet eventually and I thought I heard a loud bang and a cloud of dust down by the stadiums the day after signing T.O.

  23. jliskiew says: Aug 2, 2010 1:59 PM

All 4 NFC South teams could use him…

Nix makes it clear on Schobel

Bills GM Buddy Nix made it clear regarding Aaron Schobel’s career with the Bills. It’s over.
“He will remain on our Reserve/Did Not Report list until he makes a decision about what he wants to do, whether it’s retire or if he might want to play somewhere else,” said Nix.
If Schobel does want to play elsewhere, the Bills will then begin to explore trade options. It’s clear the Bills will not outright release him.

  26. PFTiswhatitis says: Aug 2, 2010 2:21 PM

Dmitroff will probably get in the way of the Pats signing him though I would guess Schobel would rather wear a Patriots uni than Falcons.

  27. Securb says: Aug 2, 2010 2:35 PM

Pats fans are so stupid. Do you really think Buffalo would trade him within the division? And what makes you think he would even want to play for a team with a patchwork defense

  28. Gregjennings85 says: Aug 2, 2010 2:44 PM

    Packers?

  29. jerry's kids says: Aug 2, 2010 2:53 PM

Oh, he’s from Texas. That explains the lack of brains. Nobody even knows who you are and you think you’re getting $8 million somewhere else?

  30. Fast Richie says: Aug 2, 2010 2:56 PM

Schobel & Abraham would make a nice DE duo for the Falcons … They’d bring tons of heat off the edge.

  31. Hawkfan50 says: Aug 2, 2010 3:06 PM

I’m with cball77 … the Hawks could sure use some help at DE !! And we play a 4-3 .

  34. ncsteve83 says: Aug 2, 2010 3:34 PM

Panthers need him more then anyone. We lost Peppers, and pretty much the rest of our D-Line. Fox’s job is on the line, he needs to make some moves.

Umm, dude the Bills are RELEASING him. As in CUT. It is not a trade and they will have no say where he ends up nor do I think they care. Please be more careful when throwing around words like “STUPID”.

Read the comments, Buddy Nix is going to let him rot unless he (Schobel) can talk a team into compensating the Bills …. or he retires. Alot of people figured this is what Schobel was up to anyways ….. he wants to be in a 4-3.
