Todd Haley back to playing mind games with depth chart

J. Charles3.jpgJamaal Charles gained 1,126 yards from scrimmage in the second half of last season, second in the NFL.  That doesn’t mean Charles gets a free ride to the top of the Chiefs depth chart.

One year after amusingly burying Dwayne Bowe deep in his doghouse, Chiefs coach Todd Haley has undertaken a more subtle motivation ploy.  Charles opened training camp as the team’s backup to Thomas Jones.

There are a few reasons for this, primary among them Charles’ shoulder surgery that sidelined him for most of the offseason.  But the key to the Chiefs offense is healthy now, and Haley likely wants him to be hungry again after establishing himself last year.

“That’s coaching,” Haley said to the Kansas City Star.  “I’m not real interested in any of these
guys being real comfortable. Maybe down the road when we’re a real good
team and some real good things are happening.”

For “real good” things to happen in Kansas City, Charles needs to continue his poor man’s Chris Johnson routine as a starter. There’s no doubt Charles by the time snaps really count.

Haley is a moron. This hard ass routine wears real thin in a big hurry on teams that suck, like the Chiefs. Its so high school to do this kind of crap. What might bail Haley out is having Weiss and Crennel as coordinators now…

Everytime Jamaal Charles is the topic of a article/update written by a writer from Rotoworld, Chris Johnson is always mentioned. Im really confused about it, and have yet to figure out why.
Jamaal Charles did great against teams who werent making the playoffs and didnt care. Why not mention Chris Johnson in every Jerome Harrison update. So ridiculous.

I think there is doubt that Charles when the snaps count. I just don’t think there’s any doubt that Charles when the snaps count if the games.

Having seen JC play since highschool, there is now way he is a “poor mans” CJ. They are exactly the same player. It just took KC too long to get rid of Larry, and realize what they had. The power backs are slowing being weeded out for the “scatbacks”. Jahvid Best, CJ Spiller, and more leaner faster backs will start to take over the league because they take less pounding, and they have that one miss and im gone ability.

    @ Dafool,
Thank you for the personal tidbit that you’ve seen him play since high school…..that lends more credibility to your opinion.
I’ve watched them since they have both been in the NFL…..Jamaal Charles is not Chris Johnson…not even a poor man’s. Everyone stop trying to reach for guys to be “the next one” Its pathetic and slightly embarrassing.

Haley is the Mangini of the Midwest: he acts tuff, never won anything on his own, & is going to be begging for a coordinators job somewhere else after the Chiefs admin gets sick of his old-school/cussing mentality.

  22. Chiefs2010 says: Aug 2, 2010 11:36 AM

As a long time Chiefs fan I feel Haley is certainly an upgrade from Herm (whom I’m convinced is mildly retarded – possibly from years of blows to the head) but his macho head game BS is getting old..
He’s trying to replicate Parcells and Belichick and it just gets tiresome… if anyone caught the Ravens game last year when he was up in the face of both QBs they understand what I’m saying..
    But I’m optimistic.

  23. genericbrand says: Aug 2, 2010 11:37 AM

The heading for this article is very misleading. He says head games and then lists a couple of reasons that have nothing to do with headgames. Also its great use of quoting completely out of context because “I’m not real interested in any of these guys being real comfortable. Maybe down the road when we’re a real good team and some real good things are happening.” had nothing to do with Charles or him being a “backup”. Actually Haley has made if quite clear at this point in the offseason 1s and 2s mean nothing.
    And for all you:
“Haley is a moron. This hard ass routine wears real thin in a big hurry on teams that suck, like the Chiefs. Its so high school to do this kind of crap. What might bail Haley out is having Weiss and Crennel as coordinators now…”
“Haley is the Mangini of the Midwest: he acts tuff, never won anything on his own, & is going to be begging for a coordinators job somewhere else after the Chiefs admin gets sick of his old-school/cussing mentality.”
    “Todd Haley is a prick”
Charles is coming off shoulder surgery and these are his first practices all offseason so do you really think he’s going to throw the guy back in and give him a ton of reps? A little research goes a long way.

  24. fyremn76 says: Aug 2, 2010 11:39 AM

    @CarlHess1
Charles ran for over 240 yards against the Broncos who had a chance to go to the playoffs but they needed to win their final game against the Chiefs, so they actually DID have something to play for and every reason to try and stop him! You = FAIL

does that mean mangini is the haley of the mideast?

  30. burntorangehorn says: Aug 2, 2010 11:54 AM

Chris Johnson had what will probably end up being the most productive season he’ll have in his entire career, and Charles just had a great partial season in which he played with a major shoulder injury. I’m not saying Charles is “the next Chris Johnson” or anything, because saying a guy is the next version of a guy who was drafted the same freaking year is just kind of ridiculous, but Charles has room to improve, while Johnson has almost certainly maxed out in single-season production.

  31. CarlHess1 says: Aug 2, 2010 12:02 PM

Hahahahaha the Broncos…..oh the Broncos who started 6-0 only to go 2-8 its final last 10 games? Your right, they were a playoff caliber team at the time.
    Hahahahahahahahaahahahahaha you showed me.

This is unfortunate for the guys he elevates if Haley has no plans on starting them. They get the T-Jack Experience.

Seriously, Gatsby, in order to give advice one must be able to be able to show the ability to apply it. You wrote 5 sentences and out of those 5, 3 were sentence fragments.
“Letters and word salads.” is missing a verb
“Just random words…” is also missing a verb
Then “Than what this writer wrote above” is missing a direct object and makes ZERO sense.
Granted, you’re not getting paid for your critiques or articles. But seriously, your grammar is just as bad if not worse.

  39. MDchief says: Aug 3, 2010 1:40 PM

For all of those Haley haters-
Why do you think the chiefs had the best turnout at OTAs in the NFL this summer? The only person not in regular attendance was Page who still has yet to sign his RFA offer. If his antics only work in high school and he’s bound to be out as HC by week 8, why are so many guys buying into his system? Even the vets who supposedly don’t like Haley were at OTA’s. They also all came into camp in shape and at the weights that Haley worked to get them to last year. If he’s such a bad coach and none of the players respect him, why are these things happening? I’m not saying he’s a god, I’m still undecided on him myself (my main reason for being skeptical is that he didn’t even play college ball). I’m just wondering why everyone else hates this guy so much after one season at the helm.
