Whispers about Ben Roethlisberger’s off-field issues didn’t start with his two sexual assault allegations. (And we’re not talking about his tipping practices.)
Roethlisberger was never known as a guy with the best work ethic. Unlike many top quarterbacks, he’s not the guy that gets praised for studying extra tape or is first in the building or stays in particularly good offseason shape.
When you win, that approach is fine. When the entire country knows you are a creep, maybe it’s time for a change.
The Roethlisberger that showed up to training camp this offseason has clearly looked to be in better shape. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians says his quarterback is throwing the ball better than any camp previously. Roethlisberger has yet to be intercepted during team drills and has gone complete practices without an incompletion.
It’s way too early to draw any conclusions, but perhaps Roethlisberger’s disastrous offseason could lead to a more focused player. On and off the field.
