Childress says he's not aware of Favre's intent to retire

Vikings coach Brad Childress arrived at the podium roughly 10 minutes late for his previously-scheduled press conference.

Amazingly, he said nothing about the Brett Favre situation in his opening remarks.

Even more amazingly, the first question had nothing to do with Favre.

The second question dealt with the reason why we were all watching the press conference.

Childress said that he’s not aware of Favre telling anyone he’s not playing.  Seriously.

So either Childress is lying, or Favre has opted to tell folks other than Chilly — even though the two men have spoken in the past 24 hours.

Childress reiterated that he won’t be surprised if Favre does or doesn’t play.  “He’s got to feel like he can jump all in,” Childress said.  “He’s not a half-baked guy.”

After further questioning on the matter, Childress said, “I feel like this is Watergate.”

As far as the NFL is concerned, Coach, it is.

  1. Everyone who is hoping Favre is retiring has been had. Even moreso, those who HOPE he leaves acknowledge that their teams have no chance with him in the league. Sit back, relax and watch the drama unfold. He is coming back, no doubt.

  2. Childress is like the Recreational Director on the Titanic, he’s out re-arranging the deck chairs as the ship takes on water.
The guy is truly clueless so why does this surprise anybody?

  3. So let me guess… just like in Green Bay, Brent’s just picking at the edges of the scab by letting things slip to a select few teammates. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if Chilly really didn’t know.
    Pathetic.
You’re a grown man, Brent. Make a decision and stick to it.

  4. With or with out Favre, the Vikings are still the team to beat in the NFCN. Sorry Cheeseheads but your team still has more ?’s then the Vikes.

  5. Brian Fantana: Panda Watch. The mood is tense; I have been on some serious, serious reports but nothing quite like this. I uh… Ching… King is inside right now. I tried to get an interview with him, but they said no, you can’t do that he’s a live bear, he will literally rip your face off.

  6. The best part of this entire deal is that NOTHING has been confirmed by ANYBODY. I haven’t heard Favre say anything about him retiring.
What we have here is classic conjecture and ensuing speculation. The need to generate revenue appears to be at a frenetic pace ’round these parts.
I’d argue that we all should relax and when Favre actually says something, then we analyze.

  7. I will wait to hear something from BF’s main connection…..Ed Werder. Werder could verify it and BF could still change his mind, but I assure you, J. Glazer and all the others will not know before Werder so while this is “making news” today, I will classify it as media rumor mongering becuz BF’s name sells sells sell!

  8. “He’s got to feel like he can jump all in,” Childress said. “He’s not a half-baked guy.”

Just when I thought Childress couldn’t get any dumber. During the Rhodes/Sherman years you couldn’t get him to watch film, practice…hell, you he wouldn’t even dress with the rest of the team! He’s not a half-baked guy…please. Why isn’t he at YOUR training camp with the rest of the team, Brad? Does that sound like an all or nothing type of guy?

  9. I completely forgot….I don’t what I was thinking when I predicted he will return by the third or fourth game if the Viukings are struggling. He won’t miss that opening day game, because it would mess up his consecutive starting streak. He’ll be there.

  10. Ha Ha…..i laugh in Favres and the girly-girl vikings face……Favre knows better than to EVER play the Saints again…..he said in an interview after the NFC title game that the Saints gave him the worst beating of his career……ha ha…..i know he means it cuz i watched the game and afterwards he couldn’t even hardly walk…..he’s a washed up ole wuss……and the Saints are the defending SB Champs……ha ha…..now we’ll just Tavareous Jackson instead…..ha ha……

  11. After further questioning on the matter, Childress said, “If he doesn’t come back, I won’t have a job after the end of the season when we go 6-10. I’ll be like G. Gordon Liddy, in jail after Watergate.”

  12. I’m curious what the first question was if it didn’t deal with Favre. What else is there to ask about?

  13. Right around the week before the 3rd preseason game Brett will wake up one morning stand up and say..”hey look at that my ankle is all better, I’m healed!!! and just in time for the season too.. what u know, honey get Chili on the phone”

  14. Or the reporters are so hungry for scraps to fill their columns, blogs, and tweets that a few remarks became a rumor about uneasiness became an unconfirmed report about retirement became an expected press release from Favre.

  15. Please, Please come back Mr. Favre!
No, on second thought, wait until training camp has begun, and the Bi-Queens have signed another 2 quarterbacks for camp, then fly in with your entourage, and tell them you plan to play again.
But then there is that pesky conditioning test to pass.
Chilly, why won’t you let him out of his conditioning test? Everyone knows this is the reason he has decided to retire, again?
Just look at Haynsworthless…and less and less….

  16. “So either Childress is lying, or Favre has opted to tell folks other than Chilly — even though the two men have spoken in the past 24 hours.”
Or the original story was wrong and Favre hasn’t told anybody anything.

Dangit. I want him to come back so the Packers can sweep.”

LMAO…..this dude sounds “sooooo tough” and “sooooooo unconvincing”. NFL fans heard this same bullchit for the past to years from Packer fans and especially last year and we all remember what happened in the those two Vikes/Packers games! Packer fans may talk tough but they are all praying that one BF does not come back…..but keep trying to convince yourselves packer fans.

  18. Favre’s scared, he knows last year was his shot at another ring and he choked again. His only motivation for playing last year was to beat Thompson and the Packers which he did twice. What other motivation is there? Rings? He has one already. The most selfish NFL player of all time plays for himself these days, not money or rings. Pathetic…

  19. It’s certainly possible that Chilly could just be buying time for Vikes brass to talk Brett out of it, but after watching that presser my guess is it was just a rush to report a bad rumor. Or perhaps it was even a bogus leak by Favre just to stir the hornets nest a little. But if it was true, one of the players he told probably would have tweated it by now, or we’d have more confirmation at least by now.

  20. Really….Not a Half-Baked Guy? This AssClown Fredo is so far out there it boggles the mind. You keep drinking Fredo’s Kool-Aid.
He’ll play, just needs to know that he is wanted. He’ll come riding in on his high horse in full Viqueen Dress. Scuffed Knees and elbows and a condom sticking out of his behind. Enjoy Queens!

  21. “I don’t like hearsay, I like Horse-say. I like to hear it from the horse’s mouth.”

  22. One less team my boys have to contend with….we beat down the saints last yr too. We are the favorite now for the SB…mark it down SUCKAS!!!!!

  23. I’ll say it again. I hope this is BS. I really want to see him play this year. Winning the division will be so much sweeter for the pack coming at favres expense

  24. Those “sources” must have been Tarvaris and Sage…
Yeah, coach, it’s like Watergate. Favre resigns in disgrace and leaves you twisting slowly in the wind. If only you hadn’t gone Deep Throat on him so willingly.

  25. As soon as the press conference ended Chilly grabbed his knee pads, and boarded a plane bound for Mississippi.

  26. Went back and read the original report. It says that Favre began telling teammates last night. Does anyone seriously belive that this story would have broken this morning, and without a single player comment if that was true? Gaurantee one of the players would have tweeted it, or said something. The original report is starting to look pretty suspect.

  27. Chilly is shatting his pants right now..haha….’Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels? nnnooooooo’

  28. He isn’t retiring, this is all a ploy to drum up interest in the opening game. By gameday don’t be suprised to see media coverage of an SUV speeding to NO, whilst Brad Childress locks himself in a closet with a gun to his head threatening suicide if BF doesn’t return.
    Its all about ratings people.

Bingo we have a winner, Don Pardo tell madmike what he has won!

  30. Chris Mortensen (ESPN) said he did not talk to Favre directly, but he did confirm with the Vikings officials that they received the text message(s). Of course he said the Vikings consider the situation to be “fluid”.
Hell, it’s still a couple of weeks away from when he reported last year… so time for Chilly to get on his knees so that BF will un-quit again.

  31. As a Bears fan I hope he doesn’t retire, I’m looking forward to watching Julius Peppers rape him repeatedly…sans lube.

  32. This just in, despite not being on their team, the Packers cut Favre again just to piss off fans a little more. “We can’t deal with this drama anymore, so we cut him. You are welcome Vikings. Next question.”

  33. Is there any indication what was in the text messages? I believe ESPN reported he texted, “This is it.” If that’s the case, he could be referring to any number of things, with full knowledge how it would be reported, of course.

Of course, Mortensen didn’t see the text messages. They could have just said “the ankle’s still not doing so great” and one person leaks that to the AP, who misinterprets it as a retirement. Like I said, I don’t see a lot of concrete reporting so far.

  35. Nice Watergate reference. Does Chilly feel pressured to lie to the press or cover up something? What’s next? Maybe Chilly says:
“I am not a crook.” I watched NFL network replay the Saints – Vikings playoff game this past weekend. Favre got pounded like a tent peg. Please come back, Lord Favre. We need that Joe Theisman moment when your leg gets fragged into a million pieces.
    Go Pack!

  36. the only “fluid” is in chilly’s and zygi’s pants. they have lost control.
and julianne pfeffers only gets loads of sacks against bad teams..; like daytwa.

  37. Man, Vike fans love to crow about those two games they won vs. GB. Makes sense, I guess. Any time you beat the greatest franchise in NFL history it’s something to be proud of. Kind of like the Mariners sweeping the Yankees. Interesting that the high point of the Viking franchise (losing a Super Bowl or title game) would rank about 30th on the Packers list.

  38. How do people still not know this drill??
    Unbelievable.
He’s coming back- this is all pattern.
He starts by texting teammates, saying he’s not quite feeling it.
Word gets to team officials, they reach out to confirm, and Favre says he’s “leaning” toward being done.
A:) They scramble the jets and beg Favre to reconsider (Vikings)
or B:) look him square in the eye and say “no more BS. Tell us what your decision is, we’re not in the business of putting the team on hold to coddle to a grown man- even a future HoFer.” (Packers)
As long as the team reacts with option A, he’ll come back.
So, back away from the ledge, or put the cork back in that cheap champagne.
Dude’s in purple this year. Right after the Saints game.

  39. Let the Tavarius Jackson era begin and fail. Again.
8-8 is right where you belong.

  40. alphamail, trying to understand your english. Do you mean that when Green Bay lost to the Broncos in the SB. losing was no big thing for the Pack? I suppose the Pack has endured more years of losing than winning…

  41. I hope he comes back so down here in New Orleans we get to rough him up again week one. All kidding aside I hope he comes back because he is fun to watch and even more fun to beat the snot out of.
So here you have it from a Saints fan please come back Mr. Favre. Hope to see you laid out on the Superdome turff in week one.

Another “I hope he comes back……….” yea sure you do dude. Do you know how silly ass stupid your tough talk comment sounds to the rest of the nfl fans. While you and yours “talk tough”, the rest of us only remember what actually happened and it was 2 large spankings by BF and the Vikes last year……but if it makes you feel better……we’ll pretend we agree with your tough guy image. LMAO

  44. Listening to 97.1thefan.com here in Columbus, OH. Chris Spielman, Rick’s brother is on here talking about Favre. He said he has not talked to Rick at all, but his opinion is that this is play by Favre to get more money. He’s basing that on the timing of all of this, and the fact that he’s not spoken with the coach, GM, or owner, all this information is coming from back channels. Could have a good point. He keeps mentioning about adding another $7 million to this year’s salary. Maybe he actually has talked to his brother, I’m not sure why he keeps mentioning $7 million extra if he hasn’t talked to his brother.

Um, no. Probably regrets not trading for McNabb, though.

  46. “Childress said that he’s not aware of Favre telling anyone he’s not playing. Seriously.”
Brett: Brad, I’m not coming back.
Brad: (sticks fingers in ears) I can’t hear you, LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA

  47. Come on people. We all know what this is about. Look at the news coverage he’s getting today! This is what he lives for! Now he can sit back and decide exactly when he he wants to be “talked out” of retirement this season. Will this is the year he comes back at mid-season like his HGH baseball counterpart Roger Clemons, or will it be next week? Tune in next week as the Farve soap opera continues! He’s coming back for one more year while there is still no HGH testing. And we should all know it by now.

  48. can someone offer FAVRE a damn reality show PLEASE

According to the sports media the Cowgirls are the favorite to win the SB every year no matter what. By the way, great game against the Saints with half of their defensive starters on the bench. That was awesome!!!!!

Good–keep thinking that way. You and the rest of your delusional horn-blowing brethren, AND the presumptuous cheese-slurpers seem to keep insisting the North will only be a two way race this year.
(What is with fanbases that have been spurned by Failvre and their jilted delusions?)
Okay, keep counting the BEARS out–in fact, the Bears best two seasons in the past decade (2001, 2006) came when expectations were at their lowest.
And may I take this opportunity to once again remind the world that it was THE BEARS who beat the Queens on the MNF last year, which cost them home field adavantage, forcing them down to New Orleans, where Failvre got the drama knocked out of him (temporarily), and the Biqueens, collectively, pooped the bed?
So, it’s not too much of a stretch to say…it was, in a very real and very direct way, the BEARS that cost you your Super Bowl, Miniscrota–and yet you’re all still SO quick to count us out as viable contenders this year?
    Ironic.
