When Jimmy Clausen was drafted in the second round by the Panthers, many folks anticipated a training camp battle between the Notre Dame golden boy and Matt Moore for the starting quarterback job.
With camp underway, it’s clear Clausen only has to worry about passing Hunter Caldwell for the backup job. For now, he’s coming up short.
“He looked all right throwing the ball, but he’s working with the third team and I didn’t see anything that really stood out,” ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas wrote on Tuesday.
Moore, meanwhile, has impressed just about everyone that has seen him with his throws and leadership. Here’s Charlotte Observer beat writer Darin Gantt a few days back:
“The gap between Matt Moore and the rest of the passers here is considerable. If you took the names and numbers off the jerseys and watched the four of them, you’d pick Moore 10 out of 10 times,” Gantt said.
This doesn’t tell us anything about Clausen’s long-term prospects. Rookie quarterbacks are supposed to look bad in their first training camp. Remember Aaron Rodgers?
We just point the news out to say that Moore has considerably more job security than people seem to realize. Considering John Fox’s love of veterans, that’s really no surprise.
Fox is on the hot seat. Why would he start a rookie qb? Especially one that not many teams were sold on.
Clausen should sit.
let the game come to him. why throw him into the fire when they are going to suck anyway.
What in THE hell does this have to do with Brett Favre?
Oh man, now I really do wish the Bills had drafted him. He looks like crap just like Aaron Rodgers did…..that means he’s right on schedule.
There’s no reference to Haynesworth, Favre, or Revis here. What gives?
“Matt Moore, please sit on my face” – Justin Reis
It’s Hunter Cantwell
Maybe he could start for minnesota?
Please don’t insult Rodgers by comparing Clausen to him. Clausen stinks and will never be as good as A-Rod.
YO cut Tony Pike and let him come to the nati as a #3
Wow, reminds me of this article:

It’s Hunter Cantwell…
Clausen is overrated, always has been. I mean honestly, what display of ‘greatness’ did he show at Notre Dame that has everyone on his dick?
There’s another surprise, crappy-ass Rosenthal calliing Hunter Cantwell “Hunter Cardwell”…
Florio, please fire this guy, he can’t get through an entire post without a glaring error.
On another note,,,, and more Rosenthal Wrongisms, sure, Aaron Rodgers looked bad as a rookie, and so did Packer 2nd round pick Brian Brohm… with Clausen also being a 2nd rounder I would hope for his sake that he doesn’t end up on the practice squad like Brohm did in his first year, getting beat out by 7th round pick Matt Flynn.
“We just point the news out to say that Moore has considerably more job security than people seem to realize. ”
I think they PFT writers were the only ones to think Moore was in the hot seat.
No surprise, he’s impressed every time he’s been called into action. While everyone wants to love the Falcons who still have a problem with their soft defense, the Panthers are the true dark horse in that division.
If they’d pulled the plug on the interception machine earlier last year, they could have made a serious push for a wild card. They have the best RB duo in football and their defense is still better than anything the Saints or Falcons will put out there. Matt Moore will have a very good season, I predict.

LOL – Not just typing it, but actually doing it.
I’m going to reiterate the typo again, especially as a University of Louisville fan. It’s Hunter Cantwell, not Caldwell or whatever you wrote.

Nothing, now go away.
“While everyone wants to love the Falcons who still have a problem with their soft defense, the Panthers are the true dark horse in that division.”
That doesn’t mean much when both teams will be battling to see who gets a top 15 pick.
Matt Moore has the ability to play in this league. I first saw him play when he was a JR in college and he was my favorite QB in the 07 draft class though I wasn’t THAT shocked he didn’t get drafted. He d doesn’t have “pretty measurables”. What we absolutely don’t know is how does he handle it when he is the starter and how dos he play with pressure on him in the 4th Q of meanigful (a/k/a playoff deciding/playoff)games?
He’s a laid back type dude so I don’t see it affecting him but we shall see.
Matt Moore = The poor mans Aaron Rodgers…count it….
Theres a reason Cowboys didn’t really want to let him go and theres a reason panthers have been grooming him for the past 2-3 years…
Clausen will sit and he should, not because of his talents, but because Moore NEEDS a chance. If Moore fails, then give the job to Clausen (who WILL beat out Cantwell, it’s only a matter of time), but Moore should start. As of now Moore reminds me a little bit of Tony Romo.
Don’t tell Steve Smith’s Bitch. I’m sure he still thinks Moore should be benched for no reason what-so-ever in favor of Clausen.
One day, he might actually research the Panthers and watch a game or two to try to show people he knows what he is talking about when he speaks of the Panthers.
Well, one can hope, anyway.
The Panthers claiming Moore when Dallas tried to sneak him onto their practice squad 2 seasons ago is why we are looking at an aging Jon Kitna and a noodle-armed Stephen McGee right now.
Brilliant move by John Fox, who claimed this kid as soon as he hit the waiver wire. Much to my chagrin.
And here people thought Clausen was going to be handed the job or something. He better step it up if he ever wants to take the job away from Matt.
Dallas just has this thing about spotting UDRFA diamonds in the rough.
The Panthers have done a great job “bottom feeding” for players that have or will help them considerably. Chris Harris for a 5th rounder (later traded back to Chicago for LB Jamar Williams, a solid player), DT Louis Leonard, DT Tank Tyler, WR Wallace Wright, WR Kenneth Moore, QB Matt Moore, DT Ed Johnson, RB Tyrell Sutton, etc. All will contribute meaningfully to the team this year. Throw in a few years of solid drafting, and you see how they could contend while staying away from the high-priced free agents and cutting/letting walk so many high-priced veterans.
