If Favre really does retire, Vikings fans should be livid

The PFT Daily technology is up and running again, but we didn’t get the repairs installed in time to tape Tuesday’s segment earlier in the day.

So, better late than never, we give you the first PFT Daily since my “working vacation,” of which after today I now need another.

We look at the Favre news from an unusual perspective:  What if he’s finally telling the truth?

Should run Chilly and the others out of town for not drafting a damn QB in the first round.

So livid they turn purple with rage. Viking fans love Favre. So does the rest of the sporting world. Always will, regardless of what he does.

Even if he plays this year, at some point in the future he will leave the Vikings in a bind.
Vikings would be smart to bite the bullett and just move on from this guy.
He was brought in to win a SB and it didn’t happen. And it won’t happen this year either.
There are better teams in the NFC who have their QB’s [team leaders] in camp and getting better while Minnesota begs and pleads like a spurned lover hoping a 41 year old man will give them one more chance.
Minnesota has a good team and should try to win a SB the right way by developing a young QB instead of this unseemly groveling at Favre’s feet.
If you have to beg a guy to play for you, what do you really have?

  10. Winston Wolfe says: Aug 3, 2010 6:15 PM

Hey Dr. Florio, glad you knew in March that Farve’s ankle was going to be fine before he even had the surgery. Oops apparently his ankle isn’t fine. Viking fans knew going in to this Farve was year to year. Disappointed – Yes. Livid – NO!

  11. mnplsjunk says: Aug 3, 2010 6:32 PM

    Hey idiot.
Florio is not a closet Vikings fan.
Look anywhere online or on this site.
    He IS a Vikings fan.
    Now, who cares.
You’re a Warren Moon fan and nobody gives a sht about him.
And, in regards to this article, WHY SHOULD VIKINGS FANS BE LIVID?
This was going to happen today, tomorrow, next year at this time, the year after that, 3 years down the road.
Brett Favre was never going to retire in April.
The Vikings are prepared for this and if they are not then they deserve to miss the playoffs this year.

  12. Monctonviking says: Aug 3, 2010 6:35 PM

Hey Florio…so if these reports that Farve has not made a decision
Where did Zulgad get his info ???
Judd usually has great sources isn’t the out for himself type and has one of the best names in the vikings locker room ( well maybe chilly gives him the type of treatment the saints give to there local media now)
any news on any of these sources???????

  13. spudz says: Aug 3, 2010 6:35 PM

    Vikings fans should be livid….
But the rest of us can rejoice that we never have to endure his BS anymore

“Vikings would be smart to bite the bullett and just move on from this guy.”
bigrig, your sly plot to trick the vikings into not playing favre this year so your packers might finally have a shot at the division again was very clever… but it may not work… it was very sly though… probly won’t work tho…but still, worth a try…

  15. Fievel says: Aug 3, 2010 6:39 PM

Vikings know that even if Favre DOES play that he has one, maybe two years left. But they also have known that his playing this year wasn’t certain. It’s up to management to prepare for the inevitable.

  16. JuicyMelon says: Aug 3, 2010 6:45 PM

Livid? At what? That he helped the Minnesota Vikings have one of their greatest seasons in recent memory? That he lead us to a sweep of the Packers which gave us that deer in the headlight look of TT? That he threw on the greatest passes in history that lead to one of the greatest catches in history by Greg Lewis? That the Vikings made a game of the NFC Championship which was better than the Super Bowl?
Vikings fans have no reason to be livid. Favre will hopefully be back!!!!

  17. BucHater says: Aug 3, 2010 6:46 PM

BLAH BLAH BLAH … good bye you old fart …. your like a damn drama queen that likes the spotlight …. no matter what you do you never have been and never will be the greatest …. enjoy your 1 superbowl ring cause thats the stat that truely matters …. Viking fans are just upset cause if they give Jackson the same kind of attention they gave Farve they would have another 4 inches to take …. Altho like most I am disappointed he won’t be on the field … would have like to see him get crushed to end his career .. but I guess his last past being a Interception will have todo … because for all his so called glory he was the absolute king of throw the worst interception at the worst possible times ….

  18. skimbell says: Aug 3, 2010 6:48 PM

The queens ought to just tell the douchbag to either get his ass in camp or forget it. What’s the prima donna going to do. Not another team in the NFL would take a chance on him after the way he’s jerked the vikes around.
    Call the asswipes bluff!

  19. Dial-A-Cliche says: Aug 3, 2010 6:50 PM

Viking fans are livid – with Florio and the silly way he played both sides all day.
Hope you got enough hits to sell more ad space. I would hate to see all of the scheming and crafty slight-of-hand you pulled today, accomplish nothing.

  20. Gravy Makes Sconnies Fat says: Aug 3, 2010 6:56 PM

packer fans are livid that vikes fans aren’t livid and that favre keeps making packer fans livid.

  21. GOVIKES|GOVIKES says: Aug 3, 2010 7:01 PM

I don’t know why anyone should be livid. If you didn’t expect this much uncertainty from Brett knowing his past, you were deluding yourself.
    Still Love Ya Brett,
    Vikings Fan

  22. Percy Nugz says: Aug 3, 2010 7:01 PM

As a die hard Viking fan who lives in Eden Prairie i can say that i will not be upset if Favre does decide to retire. Vikings fans were blessed to have him for last year and we all knew before last season that this would be a one year thing. If he decides to come back, that would be awesome, but you cant hate the man if he retires after 20 years in the nfl.
    SKOL VIKINGS

  23. generalbo says: Aug 3, 2010 7:02 PM

The Vikings are the NFL’s biggest joke of a franchise. They deserve every bit of this drama.

  24. Philtration says: Aug 3, 2010 7:30 PM

As dumb as Packer fans are, and they are bumpkins of Biblical proportion, Viking fans have sunk even lower.
You swallowed for the guy that you claimed you hated for years.
You fell for his stupid “I don’t really know if I’m a gonna play this year” routine long after the rest of the league grew tired of it.
You hung your hopes on this drama queen till even the Packer fans laughed at how cornball you really are.
You have become Packer fans…. but without the titles.
    Yuk!
You deserve to have the Vikings move after turning the team into a bunch of pussies.

  25. db3300 says: Aug 3, 2010 7:30 PM

Take a look at all the Viking fans pretending they don’t care. They certainly aren’t winning with Jackson but they’re “okay” with it.
“Viking fans love Favre. So does the rest of the sporting world.”
Get over yourself. The rest of the sporting world does not love Favre.

  26. Captain Canuck says: Aug 3, 2010 7:48 PM

Until next spring when we start hearing rumours of a comeback.

  27. ZombieRevolution says: Aug 3, 2010 7:49 PM

While Florio would love the extra drama if Viking fans were livid, eveyone knew he might or might not play, eveyone knews he would drag this out. The only ones livid are those who hate Favre- and they were livid to begin with.
Man- it’s going to suck for those guys when he goes into the Hall of Fame.

  28. Allied Biscuit says: Aug 3, 2010 7:52 PM

what will the nfl do without Favre? look at what he does for comments.

  29. Franchise says: Aug 3, 2010 7:53 PM

I love how misguided the media is, along with those of you who buy into this.
The same time last year, Brett wasnt going to return to football.
Guess what? He will officially come back week 2 of the preseason.

  30. BeaverThomas says: Aug 3, 2010 7:58 PM

The Vikes should have planned on “life w/o Favre” right after last season… to include the drafting of a QB. He never said he was going to do anything, so now that that is clear you can really appreciate what GB did when Favre pulled that crap with them.
THEY moved on… said they needed to know by the draft and he didn’t tell them, soooooooo the favre era was over. period.
He’s a Diva….. makes my Ocho and TO look like newbies.

  31. Bigbluefan says: Aug 3, 2010 8:01 PM

I have waited and waited for the start of training camp and the Season and now all we hear is the choke artist this and the choke artist that
There are 32 teams each team has player fighting for a spot and all the press talks about it brett the interception expert
This guy needs to sit down and STFU if he does not come back the vikes got what they paid for and if he does come back well then its next year.
Does anyone who really stops to think it about not know why the Packers cut his ass when they did I quit no I don’t yeah I do this guy must be getting into his wifes menopause meds he has more hot flashes then anyone on earth
GO AWAY WE DO NOT CARE YOU SUCK BUT THANKS FOR THROWING THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME IN GB

  32. Gravy Makes Sconnies Fat says: Aug 3, 2010 8:02 PM

here is jarred allen’s quote on espn.com:
“I love Brett and he reserves the right to do what he wants to do. We obviously love him as a teammate. We’d like to have him back. But until it’s official, I’ll believe it when I see it. ”
i think jarred speaks for all of us. and especially for packer fans. after all, packer fans know we also won the division with tjack so it doesn’t matter much who we win the division with and since brett is coming back anyway, deep down they know that they love him as much as jarred does and we do and the world does.

  33. Sarah3gl says: Aug 3, 2010 8:25 PM

BucHater I am wondering who you would consider the greatest. Now, take that person, compare his stats to Favre’s, and you will see that overall, Favre does belong in the category of one of the greatest.
don’t confuse your emotions with stats.
you seem to have followed him closely….hanging on to his last play of his last game, getting emotional over the interceptions he threw over his career / I think you are a fan in denial.

  34. NOLArules says: Aug 3, 2010 8:41 PM

vikings fan should be as livid as Bengals fans will be if Terrell Owens blows up their season. There is a history here. Viking knew exactly what they were getting into. He is who he is. And they decided to sleep with the enemy in the first place. how many years did you all spend hating the guy before deciding he is your hero?

  35. tj says: Aug 3, 2010 8:59 PM

Favre waffling cost us Vikes fans what we needed….Mr. McNabb!!!!Eagles didnt want him so bad they traded him to the skins for a pack of gum and a half full bottle of coke.We sat on our hands in the draft and on the McNabb front, because “The Warrior” was coming back..at least a reach around from Lord Favre would have been better than the F@#king we just took!!

  36. Gravy Makes Sconnies Fat says: Aug 3, 2010 8:59 PM

NOLArules, maybe if you shout at viking fans you’ll force them to be livid at favre.

  37. Sterling says: Aug 3, 2010 9:01 PM

Brett gave Vikings fans quite a ride last year. No one, including Brett and the doc, could have known in advance how his ankle would respond to surgery and rehab. The only way to know is to have the surgery and put in the time, and wait and see. Well, we’re apparently near the end of “wait and see” and it isn’t responding as they had hoped. Maybe if the Vikes had shored up their O-line, Favre might have felt better hobbling around on that ankle. But the truth is, he’ll never be any better than he is at the start of the season. The hits start coming from the first whistle and then the injuries, bruises, swelling, etc, accumulate. If Favre can’t move properly in the pocket, he’ll get hit even more, and if he can’t plant that ankle, he won’t throw well, either. It’s a blessing that he isn’t trying to do something he knows he can’t do. Vikings fans will be disappointed. But they have no right to be livid.

    Calm down everyone….
Like most Brett stuff, it really doesn’t come from him,” Longwell said. “Unfortunately, he gets all the bad rap for having all this stuff. Certainly, it’s not something that came from him.

If Vikings fans should be pissed at anyone, it should be their coach and front office for allowing this charade to begin with.
While folks love to criticize Ted Thompson for not playing the “Will he, won’t he” game and moving on with Rodgers, at least he was smart enough not to allow himself to be held hostage by a “Me first” primadonna quarterback.

Yup, they’re ok with it because they beat GB twice. That’s it, all they wanted. The season was a success because they swept GB last year. That was their Super Bowl. Ask them, and they’ll all be more than happy to rub in the fact they won both games against the Packers last season. Nothing else mattered so long as they beat GB.

As I said in another thread, no matter their record, the Vikings will always rank behind the Pack and Bears in the public view.
We’re talking about teams with twelve and nine championships, respectively. More than zero, and 1st and 2nd all-time. Teams with fans that sell out real, authentic outdoor stadiums, even when down by 30 points in the worst weather possible. Teams that have a proud tradition of winning, and who share the NFL’s oldest and most storied rivalry. Teams who don’t have to sign former hated rivals just to get recognition.
The Vikings will never be able to compete with that, and they know it.
Winning a championship, for them, means bringing home trophies named after Bears and Packers coaches. They don’t want that.. It would just be another harsh reminder.
So you’re right, sweeping the Packers is all they cared about. That was their one goal, and they most certainly accomplished it. So give them their due.

I don’t get all the hate for McKinnie. He’s better than any lineman we have in GB. Other than that, your post is pretty much spot-on.
