Report: Eagles bring back Phil Savage

Frankly, we didn’t realize that former Browns G.M. Phil Savage’s time with the Eagles ever came to an end.  But the former “draft consultant” has been re-hired by the team, according to Jordan Raanan of Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia.

Savage’s contract apparently ran out soon after the draft, but he was back on the sidelines on Tuesday in his capacity as a player personnel consultant.  The Eagles have yet to announce the move.

One of Savage’s former draft picks, Alex Hall, didn’t make it to the second week of training camp after the Eagles dealt for him in the Sheldon Brown trade.

    I’m still trying to figure out what makes him qualified to consult regarding college players? Was Matt Millen too busy?

    Matt Millen refused because he was used to working for a classy organization like the Lions.

    He was basically an SEC consultant for the draft since the Eagles had 13 picks. The SEC picks of Lindley (4th), Sapp (5th)Riley (5th),Scott (6th) and Chaney (7th) will probably all make an already good team. Sapp, Riley and Chaney are doing especially good at camp. His college talent evaluation was pretty great in the crap shoot called the draft.

    I know its fun to pick on Savage, but he did pick some good players. Joe Thomas, Kellen Winslow, Braylon Edwards until he got a case of the dropsies, did he draft Leigh Bodden? If they could have gotten consistent QB play from any of their QBs they could have been a much better team.

    Hopefully Alex Hall is the exception to the rule.

    Butch Davis drafted Kellen Winslow. Savage did sign Leigh Bodden, but he was an UDFA, not a draft pick. I agree with jsbeck: Joe Thomas was the only consistently good draft pick Savage made. Then again, he spent the #3 pick on him and it was kind of a no-brainer pick, so I don’t know how much credit you can even give him for that.

    @njeagle
    Sapp was from Clemson. Clemson is in the ACC

    Savage was horrible and the only reason he was ever a GM to begin with was because he rode Ozzie Newsome’s coattails. The majority of the picks he made with the Browns are either out of the league or on practice squads.

    I think everyone is getting to worked up about this. Suh will be signed, the lions will be better than they’ve been in years. The first time he makes a sack, causes a fumble or just creates havoc in the backfeild this won’t even be an issue. Young man coming outta college it’s probably pretty easy to be manipulated with millions, lions fans just take a deep breath the future is bright for the lions.

    nobody can find second day talent in the second round like phil savage. be afraid, philly, be very afraid. you too can overpay in draft picks (a high 2nd) for the right to overpay mediocrities ($12M+ guaranteed) like corey williams then sell them for cents on the dollar (a 6th).

    oh yeah, savage drafted and signed all those crappy QBs. you remember, trading up for brady quinn (a 1st, a 2nd, other stuff), signing derek anderson from the baltimore practice squad (good) then not trading him after his half-season aberration (bad) then signing him to a huge deal because of that half-season aberration (really bad).
