Report: Vikings prepared to offer Favre money, time

Regardless of whether Vikings quarterback Brett Favre is getting the word out about his Third Annual Retirement in order to buy time or more money from the team, the end result is that he’ll likely be offered more time and/or money from the team.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the Vikings are prepared to offer more money to Favre, over and above his current $13 million, and more time to join the team.

Either way, we still think Favre will play.

Still won’t win the Vikings a Superbowl. Plus, after this year it is T Jax time which means more years w/o a SB.

Or Glazer was just wrong and rushed his report and is now trying to cover it up so he can have it both ways. Now if Favre retires he can say he was right. And if Favre doesn’t retire, he can say he was right, the team talked him into staying with more time and/or money.

If true, then Brett Favre has found one last way to stick it to the Vikings. Forget the NFC North domination of the late 90s, forget the Monday night comebacks and embarrassments, forget knocking us out of the playoffs when it’s all he had to play for on that miserable day in Arizona…
This is almost as bad as how he single-handedly is responsible for Chilly getting a mid-season contract extension. That in itself is a pretty damned good one.
He But leaving us in the lurch like this?
He got us one last time. Bonus points for creativity, Brent.

  18. jj jones says: Aug 3, 2010 1:49 PM

    Riiiight.
‘Cause the Vikings have clearly shown they have the slightest f’n idea what it takes to win a championship.
They’ve shown they know how to beat a division rival: install their offense, sign their free agents, and throw money and dignity at their old QB..
but a championship? The Vikings don’t have a clue.

  20. Bious says: Aug 3, 2010 1:51 PM

PLEASE MINNESOTA, for the love of God save whatever dignity you have left and let this clown walk away! You have no shot at winning a superbowl with him at QB as was proven last season. The Vikings should have dumped him in the offseason and signed McNabb for the next 3-4 years. But it is the Vikings so they find ways to screw it up. If he does retired, he just completely ruined a very talented teams season when they could have made it just as far with McNabb. NOBODY HAS WON LESS WITH MORE THAN BRETT FAVRE

  32. ampats says: Aug 3, 2010 1:57 PM

As a fan of neither team, this is a joke.
Brett Favre’s legacy will be how he acted like a self indulgent diva who only thought the world revolved around him.
As an NFL fan, he went from a player most fans loved and respected to someone who has lost alot of integrity with the fans of the game.
I knew once Childress said he hadn’t spoken to Favre the circus had begun!
At least for the Jets fans, this takes away from reports from Revis Island.

  33. raiderUfan says: Aug 3, 2010 1:59 PM

I think it’s hilarious to hate this guy when in reality he hasn’t said/done anything. We hate the constant media barage of people telling us what he’s doing but the reality is he hasn’t said or done anything to the Vikings. He hasn’t hung them out to dry nor has he confirmed that he’s coming back. The only thing we know is that his ankle was hurt, he did have surgery and it’s iffy whether or not he’ll be healthy enough to play.
You guys are all “god I hate this constant back and forth” or “way to leave us hanging Brent” but it’s just like the people who hated Lebron for the never ending coverage. I hate the way he decided to make the decision but none of the lead up to that day was his doing. He did like any other FA would do and took his time. The media creates this ridiculous person that is wavering and attention whoring out of someone who has said literally NOTHING to the public.

I’m sure Sept, 9th will be just as exciting for the two of you. You’ll be in your little booth in the Superdome with candles and champagne and you’ll get to talk about T-Jacks first start in over a year. That’s just as exciting, right?
Or maybe we’ll get to see that beastly 6th round wildcat quarterback start. Or maybe the Vikings won’t show up, forfeit the game, and talk about how the better team lost for years to come. Karma is a bitch.

I think it’s one thing to be a prima donna for these past couple of season, but it’s another when the organization, in this case, the Vikings, let him do so. The Vikings are seriously spoiling him. But at the same time, they’re really going all out to try to win now rather than later. They’d rather lose face and win with Favre rather than losing games.

  58. Alleged_Free1 says: Aug 3, 2010 2:09 PM

Here’s what i’m thinking. Whether Favre comes back or not, the Vikings are still a top 4 team in the NFC. They will still go to the playoffs. The West & East are weak. The 49ers and Cowboys hold those spots. The Saints and Falcons in the south. And then The Vikings and Packers. The Vikings don’t have a hard schedule. They do have some tough road games (New Orleans, Philly, New England, NY Jets), but they also have the usual Cupcakes (Lions twice, Bears twice, Bills, Cardinals & Redskins).
So speaking of the Redskins. Has anybody noticed that McNabb has NOT SIGNED AN EXTENTION. Remember all that talk of McNabb only wanting to go to Minnesota. Hmmmm… McNabb is waiting to see what kinda deals Brady and Manning get. He’s not gonna negotiate in the regular season. I foresee him riding out the year in D.C. and then Zygi throwing money at him next year. So while the Super Bowl hopes may be put on hold for Vikes fans, playoffs are still in the picture with the possibility of landing a McNabb next year. This retirement isn’t so bad. Anything can happen in the playoffs. Just have to get there first.

  61. Ty Redofbuck says: Aug 3, 2010 2:14 PM

    Memo to Ziggy Wilf:
Favre will continue to play until Peyton Manning misses an NFL start.
Do you really think it’s coincidence that he continues to play when he already has a Superbowl ring and has proven that he can play at a high level at his age?
He’s waiting for Manning to miss a start so that he has a record at the end of the day. We all know that Peyton will shatter his yardage and touchdown records, and so does he. The consecutive starts record is the only one he’ll be left with IF Peyton Manning misses a start.
Anyone who believes that Favre is chasing another championship is mistaken. It’s all about his record. The longer he plays, the harder it is for Manning to catch him. And mark my words, the first season that Manning misses a start will be followed by Favre retiring, for good, the following offseason.

Funny how so many are saying “i hope he comes back so Rodgers and the Pack can bury his ass twice this year”…..when all the sober fans of the nfl clearly recall who spanked who twice last year with neither game being close until it became “garbage time” and let’s face it, that’s when the stats man rodgers plays at his best.

Offering him money? You mean like the time the Packers offered him $20,000,000.00 to keep his intent to retire intact, requesting that he instead accept the honor of being a Packer goodwill ambassador, which would have enabled him to be immortalized for all-time? And he felt that sticking it to Ted was more important? That’s the tactic they are using? No, he is motivated by things far less than money. If he can’t be ready by opening day, keeping his streak alive, he doesn’t want it. If not opening day….then nothing, mark my words.

If you look at the 3 articles on Favre today on PFT, there are over 450 posts already. That’s what Favre can still do.
And despite all of this, I bet if you were to poll every reader 60-80% would say they probably still see Favre playing this season.
I’ll wait until I hear from Favre or the Vikings on the matter before I really think anything but if these reports are true than hopefully the last remaining Favre backers will see him for the selfish narcissist that he is.

    ————————————————
While I agree with you in principle I’m am not so sure that Manning will break many of Favre records. Peyton is going to have to play for at least 5 more years at a very high level to get the yd mark and td mark.
Manning isn’t young and he isn’t free of health worries. He’s got a bad knee that could end his career at any time. He had a staff infection in his knee and had a bunch of stuff cut out. That thing could resurface at any moment and he’s done, plus he’s 33yrs old already and is going to have 2 new OL blocking for him this year.

Okay, once again… are you sure you’re not ADD?
Favre and the Vikings won 12 games, beat the crap out of the Packers Twice and won the division. Favre and the Vikings next destroyed the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs (something the Packers have never done). Favre and the Vikings then played the New Orleans Saints to a tie before losing in overtime in the NFC Championship game.
Far from being a “complete failure” Favre had an amazing season – by anyones definition – for which the Vikings and their fans are grateful.
It was the Rodgers experiment I believe that came pretty close to being a disaster, starting with the humiliating loss to the Favre on Monday Night Football, the humiliating loss to winless Tampa Bay, another humiliating loss to Favre at Lambeau, finishing 2nd in the Division for the 2nd time in his (2 year) career, and a final humiliating loss to the Arizona Cardinals in a Wild Card game.
