Champ Bailey: Tim Tebow is a bigger star than Deion Sanders

Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey says he’s never seen anything like the reaction that rookie quarterback Tim Tebow has gotten from fans in training camp.

In fact, when asked about Tebow, Bailey reflected on the training camp he was part of with the 2000 Washington Redskins, when Deion Sanders was his teammate — except that Bailey says even Prime Time wasn’t as big a star as Tebow.

“I’ve been on a team with some [high-profile] players, such as Deion and guys like that, but I’ve never seen nothing like this,” Bailey said, per NFL.com. “It’s amazing.”

Tebow won the Heisman Trophy at Florida and is one of the most popular players in college football history, but Bailey says Tebow doesn’t hold himself above the rest of the team.

“I’m kind of proud of him for the way he handles himself,” Bailey said. “He wants to be one of the guys. People are going to put him on that pedestal, but he handles both sides [fans and teammates] very well.”

Tebow’s presence has led to fans camping out overnight for a spot at the front of the line to watch training camp practices, and the local fire marshal stepping in to limit the number of fans crowding around to see the Broncos’ first-round pick.

Nothing like putting words in someone’s mouth. Hey, as long as it sounds like what you want him to say ….

  3. Cincinnasty says: Aug 4, 2010 8:47 PM

Goodell should drug test him after saying that..

  4. lebowski says: Aug 4, 2010 8:49 PM

Who the hell are all these people lining up to get a glimpse of Tebow??? Seriously, get a life.

    The kid is a winner.
Cue up the “hate” from the denial crowd.

I’ve certainly made my share of snide comments about Tebow. And I will certainly do so again when he jumps back in his pulpit like his Super Bowl ad. But, Champ’s comparison to Deion puts Tebow in the best possible light. Tebow needs to keep the sanctimony and evangelism to himself, or at least away from football, but never has he come across as an egomaniacal, self-promoting piece of crap like Deion.
As a Redskins fan, my lasting memories of Deion are when he danced in the endzone at RFK before the kickoff of a divisional playoff game to entertain his friends Evander Holyfield and MC Hammer only to be crushed during the game, and when he fielded punts with his face during his one pathetic year with the Redskins. (Although I do support anyone stealing Little Danny’s money.)
At least Tebow seems genuine in his religious beliefs unlike Deion’s faith in diamond-encrusted crucifixes.

Tebow was probably worth a late first round pick just for the publicity, but he’s got top-pick pressure on him. He has to be good because he can’t blame Jesus if he sucks.

  8. Tinister says: Aug 4, 2010 9:20 PM

This headline is pretty dishonest. His exact quote was “I’ve never seen nothing like this”. He really isn’t making any direct comparisons between Deion and Tebow.

  9. ochostinko says: Aug 4, 2010 9:22 PM

    That’s because Deion couldn’t walk on water…

  10. Ken West says: Aug 4, 2010 9:24 PM

Further proof the Jags should have drafted Tebow. Morons, pissing away the best chance at saving the franchise. I think the owner may want to move to LA and passed on Tebow for that reason.

  11. Mustard says: Aug 4, 2010 9:36 PM

Deion Sanders has more talent than Tim Tebow.
But at least people like the rook, Champ.

  13. hendeeze says: Aug 4, 2010 9:46 PM

What will they say when he snaps a picture of his pecker on his phone and sends it to some hot sideline reporter….. WHAT WOULD TEBOW DO!??!@

  14. SethGecko says: Aug 4, 2010 9:52 PM

Im positive that Tebow can tackle better than Neon, but in his defense Primetime wasn’t paid to tackle.

  15. LincolnHawk says: Aug 4, 2010 9:59 PM

Ken West, how is it proof again? You’re a freakin idiot. The Jags are doing fine on ticket sales and are closing the gap to the blackout number. The best part is they’re doing it without having wasted their first round pick on the equivalent of a Jonas brother.
He hasn’t even played a down in the NFL and Bailey is comparing him to Deion? You have to be joking me. By the time Deion played for Washington, he already proved to be one of the best CB in NFL history. It just shows you how warped Tebow fans are.

  16. ijr213 says: Aug 4, 2010 10:04 PM

Well, the Broncos will have a new fan base in Florida until Tebow retires or (more likely) he gets cut after McDaniels is fired. Nice kid, good heart and drive, but he’s better suited as a pitch man or pastor than as a football player.

i cant stand this teblow already. i cant wait till the 17th when the jets come in and knock him on his ass. the only thing he’ll be saying holy will be followed by the word sh*t

I still don’t think his game translates to the NFL, but I hope he does well if only to shut up his critics.

The greater Denver metro area is just loaded with glazed eyed Born Agains.

Pffft. Champ Bailey. Nobody gives a shit what he thinks. In any case, I think wed all like to know Favre’s thoughts on Tim Tebow.

  22. Po in the truck says: Aug 4, 2010 11:15 PM

I know he’s left handed, but he looks like he’s right handed trying to throw left handed.

  23. manoleisure says: Aug 4, 2010 11:21 PM

its like this in Denver… it would be this times ten in Jacksonville.
all my fellow Jags fans who say things like “we’re doing just fine without him” and “he wouldn’t have sold that many more tickets” are totally in denial. the unfortunate truth is the only home sellout all year will be the first game, when the Broncos come to town. Yep, the people in Jax will come just to see him hold a clipboard, mark my words. Meanwhile, we have a mediocre qb in his 30s and an undersized dt from Cal (who Tebow-hating Jags fans swear will be a pro bowler even though they’ve never seen him play a game).
the writing is on the wall for the future of the Jags in Jacksonville, and I for one am not happy about it. the Gene Smith defenders will realize their ignorance one day, when our boring, anonymous football team moves somewhere else.

  24. Ken West says: Aug 4, 2010 11:37 PM

    @Lincoln
Yea I am an idiot and Jags ticket sales are doing fine.
They had 40,000 unsold tickets and covered 45,000 seats, creating a demand of 5k.
Get a clue, Jags are done in Jack and Tebow could have saved them at best, and at worst delayed the move to LA.

  25. bison4me2010 says: Aug 4, 2010 11:57 PM

Champ’s happy because, Tebow makes him look good during practice.

  26. geeeeemen says: Aug 5, 2010 12:59 AM

i can see why people dont like tebow, but i like him. i think hell be a solid pro at whatever position. how could u not like him after the press conference with blood all over his jersey?

  27. Eat@Joes says: Aug 5, 2010 8:33 AM

Favorite Tebow moment – UK DE T. Wydham laying his a$$ out!

  28. LincolnHawk says: Aug 5, 2010 8:44 AM

@manoleisure – The Jags do need a good QB, all the more reason not to draft Tebow. He has huge question marks surrounding his game. You can dismiss all that, but obviously a lot of teams that needed a QB understood that, and I’ll take their opinion over yours. Just cause you watched him play in college doesn’t make you an expert. He’s not even the 2nd sting QB in Denver and people are going to flock to the Denver game, again proving their ridiculousness.
I’ll make a wager with you. If we only sell out the Denver game next year, I’ll never post here again. If we sell out more, you stop posting. Deal?
@Ken West – that last statement just proves my point. You make no sense. The Jags haven’t covered any seats to reduce the blackout number.

    ****************************
Why? He’s been getting all the endorsements, the crowds are there when he shows up and he’s made an impact in jersey sales as a rookie like no other rookie has done this year and most years. He’s WELL ahead of Deion as a rookie and right up there with him at his best. He’s got about 3 years of a honeymoon before people turn on him so he should make a lot of scratch and if he turns out to be more than a bust then he’s going to be a VERY rich man.

  30. db3300 says: Aug 5, 2010 9:58 AM

That’s an ignorant statement because Sanders was already well past his prime and everyone knew it. He only decided to play instead of retire because Snyder, yet again, threw a ridiculous amount of money at a guy who would never earn it.

  31. rbais2 says: Aug 5, 2010 11:03 AM

It’s only because Tebow’s is white, phony, and a quarterback.
If Deion weren’t black the racist baseball announcers wouldn’t call him selfish to play a football game and make a World Series appearance on the same day. If Brett Favre did what Deion did in Atlanta, he would be lauded as a hero. Plus, Deion isn’t phony for expressing his feelings about going to Detroit during the 1989 NFL Draft and rightfully dumping Gatorade on that scumbag Tim McCarver.
I love how the “objective” and “ethical” media tries to praise phoniness and pass the crap off as true; especially when these idiots try to “seek” the truth.

translation: “He’s a good guy, I like him because he’s a good guy”
I like the guy *because* he’s not making it rain, getting DUIs, or beating up pregnant girlfriends. I could care less if his throwing motion sucks, i’m pulling for him because I think he’s an excellent role model.
Just don’t give him a platform to talk about his extreme religious beliefs and we’ll all be fine

They’re gonna build a mosque at ground zero and you think Tebow has extreme beliefs.
Get back under your rock, asshole.
