Gregg Williams vows to "send messages," starting with Favre

During the 2009 playoffs, Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams supplied the words, and his players provided the actions.  They pummeled quarterbacks Kurt Warner and Brett Favre in the NFC tournament, and they confounded — and ultimately overcame — quarterback Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl.

Williams’ comments prompted coach Sean Payton to give the former Bills coach sand, peanut butter, and crackers at a team meal prior to the Super Bowl, in the hopes of shutting Williams up.

With the 2010 season approaching, Williams is talking again.

“[W]e have to send messages to every offense about how physical it’s
going to be when they play us,” Williams told USA Today, via WCCO.  “Those messages are out there, starting
with No. 4
.”

It’s unclear whether Williams was referring to the messages sent last January, with a series of “remember me” hits that may have prompted Favre to eventually forget his name, or whether Williams was saying that they plan to do it again in September.

Regardless, it’s safe to say that they plan to do it again in September.

And the Vikings are brushing off Williams’ threat against their quarterback.  “Those are just meathead comments,” defensive end Jared Allen told WCCO.  “You know what, it is what it is.
People trying to get their team fired up.  They’re trying not to let a
successful season get to them  . . .  at the end of the day people are going
to talk with their pads and we’ll see how things happen down in New
Orleans.”

Here’s the problem, as it applies to the Vikings.  Last time around, Favre had the entire offseason to recover from the beating he took, and he’ll apparently need every last second of it to do so.  If the Saints hit him like that in September, he could be retiring before Week 2 even starts.

I’m not a Saints fan, but I would hate to see them lose Brees for the year because their d-coordinator pissed off the wrong d-lineman that doesn’t care about a fine.

As usual Williams sent his message via video tape. Authorities examining the tape believe it was filmed somewhere in the Pashtar region of northern Pakistan.

Hate on him all you want people, but you can’t stop talking about him! You all say you hate his attention whoring and how he’s such a prima donna…but you keep giving him attention!

  5. UBB says: Aug 5, 2010 12:06 PM

I wonder what Williams will say after Brees get’s sent a message or two as well. Does he think his defense is the only one capable or willing to play dirty if need be?

  6. jwill007 says: Aug 5, 2010 12:06 PM

guarantee you some of the hits will be called for roughing the passer…It will be called close because if Farve is injured in game 1 the Saints will not get much help from refs and the NFL the rest fo the season….Its just the way it is….

  7. pftfanboy says: Aug 5, 2010 12:06 PM

that offensive line was disgraceful in that game. Manning would have had them all fired and out of the league had that been him.

Why is it that when players do this, they are fined for making threats? I thought the NFL wanted to protect the quarterback. No need to look the other way anymore, Goodell. The Saints got their championship. Unless they need to be handed another one to make up for the oil spill this time, now that Katrina is taken care of.

Payton should just give his fat ass a donut. His defense is a mirage that was effective because of an unusually high turnover rate. This year they are gonna get scorched. Keep blitzing and watch that secondary get used.

Gregg Williams is a f*cking loser who prides himself on encouraging his Saints’ “good” defense to committ cheap shots and p*ssy B.S. hits. I hope Favre “accidentally” throws a pass out of bounds on the sidelines and leads Shiancoe right into Gregg’s head-coaching reject ass. The Saints defense is average at best (yes everyone, get off their jock), and the Vikes exposed that in the championship game. Five turnovers and they still barely lose in OT? What a joke.

It’s one thing to spread the bullchit to your players but does Williams actually think any of the other 31 teams are shaking in their boots? If I were Sean Payton, I would put duct tape over this guy’s mouth as he could cause many more problems than he would ever solve. For sake of argument , let’s say Williams has created this “hit list of QB’s” and if the only way the saints can accomplish their “goal” of hurting the opposing QB is to play dirty then one of two (if not both) things are bound to happen. With the stated “threats”, Goodell will suspend instead of fine players and secondly, “payback wouldn’t be sweet”. If Brees is arguably in the top 3 QB’s of the league, does it make sense to put a “bullseye” on his back for opposing teams to “send messages”? At the end of the day, Williams is nothing but a blowhard who starting to sound more and more like Rex Ryan….”talk is cheap, it takes money to buy whiskey”

  30. texassledder says: Aug 5, 2010 12:22 PM

The Vikings pretty much dominated most stats, and if it wasn’t for some cheap shots and blown calls, i think the Purple would have pulled that one out. Taking shots at a QB is one thing, but the low and hi hit, and others were Cheap Shots! I am all for punishing a QB when you get a chance, but make it LEGAL!!!! And if it isn’t legal, it should be called! The purple will destroy the Aints this year!

  31. MrHumble says: Aug 5, 2010 12:23 PM

Williams “message” to #4 and other QB’s : “we really aren’t worth a chit on defense and can’t stop anyone unless we play dirty and cheap”…….isn’t there a short little guy in N. Korea who makes the same asinine threats, LMAO

  32. Nevisyakker says: Aug 5, 2010 12:23 PM

and Jared Allen swims past the left tackle, gets up to full speed, sees Brees unload the ball to avoid taking the hit and sack, and Allen doesn’t just hit him but lowers his head and shoulder for maximum leverage and blows Brees up. When Brees comes to in the ER 45 minutes later all he can think of is…gee, thanks a bunch coach Williams…

I have no idea who the Saints back-up is. And I really don’t care. Drew Brees signed their fate when he agreed to be on the cover.

  38. Headcrusher says: Aug 5, 2010 12:27 PM

This is gonna be a great game. Favre got his ass kicked in the NFC Championship, and I am sure the Vikings defense is looking forward to dishing out some of that punishment on Brees. The Vikings will be ready to play, I wonder if the Saints will. The Vikings – as poorly as they played – still came only a cunt-hair away from winning that game. I can’t wait for that game.

  45. Flvikesfan says: Aug 5, 2010 12:30 PM

I would say the Vikings are going to be out for Brees blood when they play in September. Because of the way the D for the Saints took cheap shots last year I would say the Vikings have a very special welcome back planned.

Paul Allen – “Brett Favre goes back to pass he pumps, now he fires over the middle. Intercepted, I can’t believe what I’m seeing right now. It was intercepted by Tracy Porter, near side to the 40 and John Sullivan runs him down at the 47 yard line. You’ve got to be kidding me, I can’t believe what I just saw.”
Other announcer – “Looking at that play he should have just held on to it Paul, he should’ve. He could’ve easily have gotten 5 or 6 yards if he would have just pulled that thing down and dove foreward.”
Paul Allen – “But why do you even ponder passing, I mean you can take a knee and try a 56 yard field goal. This is not Detroit man! This is the Super Bowl.”

  47. Lurch says: Aug 5, 2010 12:32 PM

What possible advantage does it give the Saints when your defensive coordinator announces a month in advance that he’s going to be gunning for the opponents’ quarterbacks?
While he’s at it, Buddy Ryan Jr. might as well announce that he’s placing a personal bounty on signal callers, starting with Lord Favre.
The Saints / Vikes game is going to be so closely officiated it won’t be funny. But if Favre does go down … it’s almost a guarantee that Brees will follow, given the purples’ almost messiah-like worship of their favorite ex-Packer.

  48. TheVulture says: Aug 5, 2010 12:34 PM

Wow, that Katrina was one hell of a storm. Years later it made the Vikings fumble five times, Favre to get hit 20 times, and throw a game losing interception. Wow. The power of nature is truly staggering.

  49. JimmySmith says: Aug 5, 2010 12:35 PM

It might help if the Viking O line blocked better.
Unfortunately, McKinnie is better at swinging metal pipes than he is at pass blocking. If they play like that again, Favre’s streak will be ending in Week 2 leaving Favre to sit home in nothing but his crocks and more than just time on his hands.

Was Jared on the sideline in a Christmas sweater doing comedy skits during that NFC championship game? Because I sure didn’t hear his name all night. He can rack up sacks against the Packers but we’re talking about the best o-line in football.
If anyone touches Brees after the whistle the entire Superdome would would come after them. Our QB actually cares about our fans and shows up to training camp. He’s not a drama queen who extorts our team for more money and attention.

And at the same time laugh at Brees for being sidelined because of asinine statements like this that do nothing but rile up the opposing teams to stop at nothing to inflict the same amount of pain back at the loudmouths.

If the Saints played the NFC Championship game straight up and got called for the penalties they should have I truly believe the game would have been a different story. Ultimately the Vikings screwed themselves by turning the ball over about 100 times but all the dirty cheap shots didn’t help. Katrina and/or the refs certainly didn’t cause Peterson’s case of fumblitis, Percy Harvin’s fate-sealing fumble on their own Red Zone, Childo’s inability to count to 11 or Princess Favre showing the Minnesota fanbase what Packers fans got all too used to seeing when he was in Green Bay.

Dirty hits? Stop crying, you lost. Most of you are the same people who make fun of Tom Brady, but god forbid anyone touches your QB.
If the league was going to give them a championship for Katrina, wouldn’t they have done it the year after it happened, when the Saints were deep in the play-offs anyway? You lost, and you can’t handle that the championship you were promised when BF signed on, was not delivered.
I’m not a Saints fan, but you cry-baby Viking fans are the worst in the league. Root for your team this year. They are very good if Favre comes back. Living in the past= getting killed in the future.

If anyone touches Brees after the whistle the entire Superdome would would come after them. Our QB actually cares about our fans and shows up to training camp. He’s not a drama queen who extorts our team for more money and attention.

What’d I’d like to know is how this guy continues to talk trash when his defense was torn apart by Favre and the Vikings. Yes they hit Favre a lot, and many of the hits were blatantly late and dirty. Those refs had there heads up their you know what. Williams might think he’s a tough guy but all of those hits still didn’t matter. Bottom line – Vikes handed the Saints the ball 5 times and were still in the game. Brees and Co. put up 47 fricking yards in the 2nd half. Ask any analyst, coach, or player prior to that game if the Vikes would have a chance if they turned the ball over 5 times and the answer would have been HELL NO! Williams, your D is over-rated and can’t stop anyone. Good luck with your awful down-field coverage. Fluke year, just like Da Bears in ’05. OVER-RATED!

That’s an impressive list of stats, but something looked off to me. I did a little research and it seems that in American football, they tend to also keep track of the accumulation of touchdowns, field goals, and other things that make up a category known as “scoring”. except for the botched handoff at the goalline (derrrrrrrr!), every fumble and takeaway was caused by the Saints defense. no one dropped the ball, they had it stripped.
but since we’re talking stats… did you look at return yards? the Saints had around 220 punt, kick and interception return yards. you know how many the Vikings had? 48.
now let me ask you a question, Einstein. if Courtney Roby returns a kick 61 yards, at most, how many yards can the Saints offense get before scoring a touchdown?
don’t you think that the Saints monster return game had something to do with the Saints offensive yards, first downs, time of possession?

Very interesting stat for all of you pillow biters in viking land who complain all day about the refs
    ————————————————–
yes we complain about the refs- it was about the NON calls- like the time your defensive linemen went high & low on favre- shouldve been a 15 yard penalty and a first down inside the new orleans 20
not to mention the 4th down play where ben lieber caused bush to fumble the ball causing him to not get the 1st down and they blew that call
plus the trap by your reciever in overtime
    shall we go on????????????
LOOK- I care about the Vikings- and I love football- but you supposed Saints fans get pretty personal in your posts-it’s JUST FOOTBALL people!!!
I still think that New Orleans IS a dump- but not because I don’t like the team-I like Green Bay- but I HATE the team- see where I’m going?
besides- people should be more upset about Sharper’s comments than greg williams’- sharper is just another over rated big mouth

    ———————————————–
the Saints had the 6th ranked running game last year. where was Minnesota ranked? 13.
the Saints ran more (7th), had more yards per carry (5th), had more total yards (6th), and had more rushing first downs (4th) and touchdowns (2nd) than the Minnesota Vikings. in fact, i think they were superior to Minnesota in just about every rushing category.
so please, sit down and enjoy your plate of STFU.

    ==============================
The rest of the quote is true.
What i was making fun of was ” the fans coming out of the stands”. Riiiiiight. the comment of a 12 year old.
Moreso that Brees “cares” about his fans…Really?!
None of them do. They don’t know you from a hole in the wall, they don’t care about you.
That is the reasoning of a 12 year old.
    Happy now?

The opening game doesn’t mean squat folks — nothing really counts from a payback perspective until the playoffs. Not until then should there be talk of revenge or any of that crap. The Saints won the NFC Championship game regardless of any whining about lousy calls, cheap hits, statistics, vicodin consumption or anything else. As a Vike fan, the loss sucked, but it means nothing this year. Vike fans should stop the delusional whining — you sound way to much like cheesers.

  137. chhutson27 says: Aug 5, 2010 2:55 PM

I’m sick and tired of hearing about last year’s game. The Vikings ALMOST beat the Saints. They didn’t though. So shut up about it. The Patriots ALMOST sacked Eli Manning and achieved perfection. Shaun Shuisam ( or however his last name is spelled), ALMOST kicked a decent field goal and beat the Saints. Denver ALMOST made the playoffs the past 2 years (1 game short). Come to think of it, a bunch of teams ALMOST made the playoffs.
Get the picture here? Almost doesn’t cut it. The Saints won the darn Super Bowl. The Vikings ALMOST made it to the Super Bowl. Heck, the Colt’s ALMOST won. ALMOST is worthless and pointless. Results are what matters.

  138. purplepride5150 says: Aug 5, 2010 2:56 PM

What the H? You really want to play that game? Had the Ravens’ kicker not missed a field goal at the end of their game against the Vikings, you would have lost.
    ————————————————–
ummm 20 yard field goal- 45 yard field goal- just a little difference there- just saying
and i’m not whining- im just stating facts- i dont want to play any games- its very easy to miss fortunate events that happen for your team after all is said and done- no one wants to admit a gift cuz their team is invincible-lol we did get lucky in that ravens game- i can admit it- you obviously cant

  139. Vikingbeau says: Aug 5, 2010 2:59 PM

Williams is a blow hard…the world saw the Aints defense get worked in last year’s NFC championship…vikes pissed it away with turnovers…you take the turnovers away and Favre throws 15 passes tops and isn’t even knocked down once…vikes would have won that game 40-7. I can’t wait for the opener. When Peterson wasn’t fumbling he was running all over that soft defense last year…expect more of the same this go round….less the turnovers.

    —-
Here’s another difference — when the Ravens kicker missed the field goal, you won the game. When the Redskins kicker missed the field goal, we still had to score a TOUCHDOWN in less than 2 minutes just to TIE and get to OT. Then we lost the coin toss and they got the ball first in OT. So obviously it wasn’t just luck involved – actual work occurred too. You are acting like that missed field goal gave us the game, when in reality we still were down by 7 points when he missed it. No doubt we had balls bounce our way, throughout the season, and him missing the field goal gave us the opportunity to tie rather than be down by 10.
But you also act like that one game changed the course of who had home field advantage, when the Vikings had luck go their way sometimes too, such as the Ravens missing a field goal, Favre’s miraculous hail mary to win in SF, etc. Luck went both ways for both teams, and in the end, the Saints had the better record. That’s how it went. Stop blaming luck for the Vikings not getting the #1 seed.

  142. cusoman says: Aug 5, 2010 3:14 PM

So wait, when the Vikings get lucky (a la the Ravens game), it’s all “The Vikings suck, they just got lucky and the Ravens handed them that game!”
But when the Vikings opponent gets lucky in the same manner it’s “Whatever, my team would have won either way, the Vikings just made it easier!”
See, that’s why none of you are taken seriously around here, you change your story when you comment here to suit your needs and then complain or make fun of anyone who doesn’t agree with your constantly twisting little world.

    —————-
You can’t take the turnovers away. They were part of the game. The Saints’ defense forced four out of five of them. And the Saints actually only scored off of one turnover, so in your imaginary world where the Vikings win and never turn the ball over, the Saints would still have scored at least 21.
I can’t wait for the opener either. You morons who think the Vikings are going to blow the Saints out are in for a rude awakening. Favre passed for 310 yards in the NFC Championship game. He’s not going to do that in the opener. All we have to do is get ahead and you won’t be able to rely on your running game alone to catch up. And coming off ankle surgery and little practice in the offseason, Favre will fail you. You might be better off with TJ in that first game, actually.

  144. stadanko says: Aug 5, 2010 3:25 PM

@RC IV As I said previously, the comment about coming out of the stands was a literary device known as hyperbole. They might not teach that in technical college but you should check it out on wikipedia when you’re done yanking it to pictures of Brent. And you obviously have no idea what you’re talking about when you say Brees doesn’t care about the people of New Orleans. I guess when you’re used to a selfish drama queen of a quarterback you get a little jaded. Now call me a 12 year old again with no real reasoning because that’s about all you seem to be able to do.

But then camps open, and the whole thoughtful, perceptive quality thing just goes down the tubes. Many of the best commenters seem to disappear; only the Wild Ones remain.
Ah yes, it’s The Season again.

one last comment about that redskins game & the Vikings game- the Vikings were leading that game- the WHOLE GAME- and the Ravens missed a 45 yd field goal- the Redskins also lead the whole game- THEN missed a 19-20 yd field goal(which is an extra point) and wouldve put the game out of reach because the Saints didnt have any time-outs left-DERRRR there is just a teeny difference
and yes one game can make the difference- thats all it takes- it didnt happen so i’m not living in the what if fantasy land- i’m just saying that most Saints fans seem to think their team crushed everyone & I was stating that there is a lot of luck that goes into a season-thats all-but of course I’m just a whiner loser Vikings fan- at least I can complete a rational thought

I recall that GB was very interested in him, but I think – maybe I’m wrong about this – I think there was some concern about whether or not he would fit in with the organization. I think ultimately they made him an offer and he turned it down – can anyone recall if there was a personality concern about Gregg Williams in Green Bay last year?

I watched the replay of the game on NFLN the other day. Mike Periera said that all of the calls in OT were correct. Pierre Thomas never lost control of the ball so it goes to it’s furthest point. Ben Leber was not looking back a the ball when his feet tangled withe Dave Thomas’ so it was pass interference. (and the refs missed a roughing penalty on that play) And the ball thrown to Robert Meachem never touched the ground. So for all the Viking fans who keep making up crap, you are dillusional. One other thing, for those who say that outside of New Orleans everyone thinks the Saints are paper champions, they were voted the best team in all of sports by fans across the country for the ESPY’s. The Vikings meanwhile one won that was awarded off camera as the team that is most likely to never win the big game.

They bragged and bragged about hitting Favre illegally and injuring him. Now they are already talking smack about trying to put more illegal and dirty hits on him. Kind of pathetic considering they just won the superbowl that they are already talking about how excited they are to play dirty.
Injuring Brees would end their season and perhaps shut them up about their obsession with trying to injure QB’s with dirty hits.
There is a reason Sean wanted to shut his ass up. Because opponents read this crap and know their intentions. You just wait and see. Vikes might have a lil’ sumn’ sumn’ called Ray Edwards hitting Brees in the side of the knees 3 or 4 seconds after a pass.

Your Super Bowl win last season was an anomaly.
All-time, the Saints have winning records against two (2) franchises … the Bucs and the Lions. The only two franchises in the league to record Win-less seasons. That being said, your franchise is still classified by decades of PATHETIC football.
You had your LUCKY season. Now, it’s time to remove the rose-colored glasses, put down the glass of gulf water and face reality.
It’s pathetic to see so many Saints fans talk about how they “destroyed” the Vikings in the NFC Championship. I’m not going to add any fuel to that fire because as annoying as the Saints fans are, the Vikings fans are almost just as bad. But let’s get down to brass tacks…
You won by 3. In Overtime of a horribly officiated game. Because of a 12 Men in the Huddle penalty.
That’s why you won, because of a stupid mistake. Which coincidentally sums up your whole Super Bowl season: A stupid mistake.
Can we just start the new season already so the Aints can miss the playoffs and things can return to normal?

Find me one quote from anybody within the Saints organization who said this. You can’t because it doesn’t exist. You guys think you can piss, moan, and whine and everybody is going to believe you. Well in Minnesota people might believe your BS but nowhere else do they. Williams is a coach who has a big mouth but there is no player, including Sharper, who wants to take illegal hits on anybody. Again, I’ll ask you, did you whine like this when Jared Allen went for Matt Schaub’s knees? None of you coward Viking fans will answer. Because to you it’s okay when it’s your player. Brett Favre giving crackback blocks is okay because he’s your player. Plenty of Minnesota fans actually believe there was a fix on the game. Is this the WWE? If so why do you still watch?

  177. sand0 says: Aug 5, 2010 6:50 PM

Saints fans are pretty pathetic. They win the superbowl but still can’t let the NFC Championship game go just because everyone knows their team got dominated but was handed the victory by fluky fumbles and poor officiating. It is as if the Saints fans think their team’s strategy was to get dominated 2:1 in yards and first downs and time of possession but rely on poor officiating and fumbles to help them win.
F’in idiots. You guys won. Be happy. But don’t try to talk this crap like your team played a great game that day. They were physically manhandled and won because of cheap shots, poor officiating, and unforced turnovers. If you think their 17 completed passes and pathetic first down percentage is why they won then you are an idiot.
It is better to be lucky than good. Just accept it and be happy that your weaker team was granted victory without earning it.
And you guys think it is cool that Greg Williams is bragging about trying to injure other players with dirty hits. Then call us pathetic with the same breath.

Saints were pushed down the field by the refs in OT. Phanton pass interference (Asher Allen gets called for TOUCHING a Saint in OT, but during the game some dude pulled Shiancoe’s shirt off and it was literally in tatters…no call) Saints go for 4th down, fumbled ball, refs still give him first down even after replay. Saints receiver bobbles ball, goes to the ground, ball touches the ground…replay….still gave him the catch. Tight end goes down sideline, ball way overthrown, TE trips over himself, call the Vikes for pass interference.
    Enjoy it Aints.
I got no explanation for all the Vike fumbles. I’ll give you that. 12 men in the huddle, hope you love that Aints, you really worked hard for that. Should make you feel proud.

People talk about last season’s game as if Favre was just bashed left and right by a physical Saints team leading to an offseason of recovery.
All of the damage was done on one single dirty, late, hi lo hit that the refs inexplicably chose not to call roughing. He took other hits, but the injury was suffered on one cheap shot.
The Vikings physically manhandled the Saints that game. Christ look at the final stats. The turnovers weren’t created on big hits. There weren’t many sacks.
Maybe they are compensating. The Saints defense is a little undersized.

  188. sand0 says: Aug 5, 2010 8:06 PM

    mikemsaints,
The Saints didn’t brag about the hit? Let’s see here.
Sharper bragged about how they are going for Favre’s ankle. Greg Lewis brags about how they are sending messages starting with #4. Lewis brags about coaching his team to send “remember me” hits or whatever which basically translates to high-lowing the opposing team’s quarterback after he has thrown the ball.
I don’t need to dig up the quotes. Did they literally spell it out that way? No. But the message is pretty damn obvious. Every team plays hard and tries to sack the opposing team’s QB but he Saints are a rare team where there is a concerted effort to injure or hurt the opposing team’s QB. They even made a cute name for it.
Am I pissed? Why wouldn’t I be? Our team lost in the NFC Championship game despite dominating the opponent in most facets. They lost primarily by setting up the opponent with unforced turnovers. They lost by horrifically one sided officiating. They lost because their QB was dinged up the whole game off of a cheap hi low hit that their players were coached to do.
Then you flippin Saints fans are in every Vikings related thread (not counting this one since it is Aints related as well) continuing to obsess over our team as if you lost the damn game. Seriously it is like you guys are mad that we think the Saints were lucky as hell in that game or that we don’t think Brees wanted to go 17/31 for 200 yards.
Then you are in here saying “look up the return yards”. F’ing return yards? First off I didn’t put all the stats up there in the first place. Second off averaging 30 yards on kickoffs is pretty much league average and hardly gamebreaking. Sure there was the OT return which was huge but it would have been nothing without being followed up by the most terrible string of bad calls I’ve ever seen.
Seriously there were like 4 or 5 bad calls required for that final drive. It was insane. I guess the NFL wanted one for Katrina or whatever.
Oh well. If the Vikes can manhandle those chumps in the superdome again while avoiding crazy fumbles and officiating I’ll be able to move on. But as long as idiot fans keep making stupid comments like the Aint’s being anything BUT the luckiest NFC champ in the history of the game I’ll continue to be angry with fans of the most illiterate state in America. :)

  189. sand0 says: Aug 5, 2010 8:09 PM

    Kaybee,
Were you watching the game? Brees threw the ball too fast and incomplete to get sacked. Look at the final stat line. Outgained by 200 yards and 3 out of something on first down. That is the result of being physically manhandled.
God you guys are about as retarded as Packer fans. Sheesh.
Okay I give up. The Saints flawlessly executed their “not gain any yards but win somehow else” gameplan by utterly crushing Favre with clean on time hits. Then their coaching staff didn’t brag about the remember me hits or come out this season and say they are going after #4 again in a clean way. Greatest team ever. I mean getting outgained by 200 yards and winning on pure penalty yards in OT happens all the time. Yep nothing more to see here.

Thanks for comparing Saints fans to Packers fan, because you know both fan bases have something in common that the Vikings fans don’t.
I don’t think I have to tell you what that is.

  192. mikemcsaint says: Aug 5, 2010 8:24 PM

sando, thanks for proving me right. First let me address the obvious. Troy Aikman, while calling the game said ” The Saints are doing a great job of stripping the ball from the Vikings every chance they get” – THE TURNOVERS WERE FORCED AND EVERYBODY BUT VIKING FANS KNOW IT.
As for the “bad” calls. Mike Periera said all of the overtime calls were correct. THE CALLS IN OT WERE CORRECT ACCORDING TO THE HEAD OF OFFICIATING AND EVERYBODY BUT VIKING FANS KNOW IT.
As for horrific refereeing, including the OT there were more calls against the Saints than the Vikings. VIKING FANS ARE DILLUSIONAL
As I stated previously, the fans of the United States voted for the ESPY’s and the Saints were selected the best team in all of sports. This doesn’t prove we’re the best but it does prove that most fans think we didn’t cheat our way to the Superbowl.
Lastly, where is the quote that said they’d hit ILLEGALLY!!!!! It is a known fact by anyone who watches football that when a player is injured the other team goes after the injury. Bobby Hebert told the story of how he once had his nuts bitten under a pile after a sack.
You got me on the illiteracy but it’s only comparable to the corporate welfare (corporations buying tickets and giving them away so the games are sold out) that goes on in Minnesota. We are the 2nd smallest market in the NFL with no Fortune 500 companie and we’re 216th in the nation in wage earner income but we still manage to sell out the games. Minneapolis is 3.5 times our size and they need Target to give away free tickets to fill the stadium, then they pump in fake noise.

  193. Kay Bee says: Aug 5, 2010 8:25 PM

I remember when the Vikings got their asses kicked in the NFC Championship game 41-0 against the Giants.

  194. mikemcsaint says: Aug 5, 2010 8:34 PM

Oh, one other thing. We the Saints had a 63 yard kickoff return to set up their 2nd TD. The reason I point this out is because Viking fans are hung up on stats, unless of course they don’t support their arguments.

  195. purplepride5150 says: Aug 5, 2010 9:13 PM

All Vikings fans are bitches. That has been proven. They are L.A. bound and never got there championship. So the tears and conspiracy theories come out to play. If anything the NFL should have felt sorry for MINN and handed them the game. The Saints are in absolutely no danger of being moved. Vikes are in worse shape than then Jags, and Bills.
All that being said, there is absolutely no way the Saints repeat. Last year they were the luckiest team in the league. Remember that bad-ass play where Metchem or Henderson (can’t remember who it was,) stole the interception? That’s not a strike against them, every team who wins a super-bowl is the luckiest team in the league that year. The fact is, any of these teams can win any week. The Bills could well make the Superbowl this year, and Dallas could end up 2-14. It’s a lot to do with talent, but none of these teams are so much more talented than the Rams that a win is guaranteed. The deciding factor is luck. The Saints will not get that lucky again.
I’m being sort of down on the Saints, and I don’t want anyone to think I am ragging on them. I am not. They have the best QB in the league, and probably the best receivers in the league. They are very good, I just don’t see the luck being there.
Minn. is very unlucky that Favre isn’t comming back.
    Good luck to both teams.

After reading all of these comments about the cheap shots and dominating the Saints, I would have to beg to differ on who the retarded fans are. There are always bad calls in games, I could name a Packer Card game, but anyways, if you are dominating a game as Viking fans claim, then those bad calls don’t come into play because you are dominating the game and it isn’t close enough to matter, but it was close enough. Special Teams play wins games as well and the Vikings were dominated in this stat, pair that with the fumbles (which is part of the game, remember Clay Mathews ripping the ball out of AP’s hands), you lost the game. I have plenty of friends who are Viking fans who agree totally with this, hell one even pointed all this out to me.

Listen every championship team gets a game or two that bounces their way. I’ll dare say every playoff team gets a little help along the way.
    For example…
If Indy plays it’s starters the Jets don’t make the playoffs.
If Philly beats Dallas Minnesota doesn’t get a buy and is the 4th seed (I believe) or if Baltimore/SF doesn’t lose to Minny then they may not win the division.
Belichek gave Indy a game with a bad 4th down call.
If the Redskins make a kick they likely win giving one more loss to the Saints.
At the end of the day, the Saints went 15-3 and won the SB, beating quality competition along the way. All of the teams in question got some help.

A Steelers fan commenting on officiating. The 2006 SB was a tainted title too.
NFL referee Bill Leavy acknowledged he made mistakes in the Seattle Seahawks’ 2006 Super Bowl loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. “It was a tough thing for me. I kicked two calls in the fourth quarter and I impacted the game, and as an official you never want to do that,” said the veteran of 15 NFL seasons and two Super Bowls.
“It left me with a lot of sleepless nights, and I think about it constantly,” Leavy said of the game in February 2006. “I’ll go to my grave wishing that I’d been better.”
Several calls went against the Seahawks in their 21-10 loss to the Steelers.
Guess what KB & Michelle Mc Saintmypanties:
“The league felt, actually, that the Super Bowl was well officiated. Now, that doesn’t mean there were no mistakes. There are always mistakes, but it was a well-officiated game.”

Saints fans have nothing to do with what the media chooses to fixate on. Go complain to ESPN, we were busy enjoying our football season.

    P-Town Packer says:
“if you are dominating a game as Viking fans claim, then those bad calls don’t come into play because you are dominating the game and it isn’t close enough to matter, but it was close enough. Special Teams play wins games as well and the Vikings were dominated in this stat, pair that with the fumbles (which is part of the game, remember Clay Mathews ripping the ball out of AP’s hands), you lost the game.”
    —-
Some common sense, thanks. Saints were better in turnover ratio, return yardage/special teams, and red zone efficiency. Those things matter just as much as yards gained. Especially when you gain a bunch of yards then fumble the ball.

Michelle Mc Saint is the only person who saw that game that thinks the officiating was fine & that the Saints didn’t fumble & the ball wasn’t trapped.”
    ——
No, he’s not the only person. Look, I will admit as a Saints fan, of course I’m going to be biased about calls for or against my team. I wish Vikings fans would admit as much —- you are biased, there is no way around it. I fully believe Pierre Thomas did NOT fumble because he kept control of the ball. The booth review did not see a reason to overturn the call – and not because they wanted the Saints to win, as you and your friends so lamely complain. You are biased and will believe that it is soooo clear what really happened, but you are biased, plain and simple. You can’t look at it without your purple-rose-colored-glasses.

“Then you are in here saying “look up the return yards”. F’ing return yards? First off I didn’t put all the stats up there in the first place. Second off averaging 30 yards on kickoffs is pretty much league average and hardly gamebreaking. Sure there was the OT return which was huge but it would have been nothing without being followed up by the most terrible string of bad calls I’ve ever seen.”
………..Return yards was 200+ to about 40. Not sure why that doesn’t seem important to you. Oh, because the Saints were better in it so you want to pretend it doesn’t make a difference. Special teams DOES make a difference. Courtney Roby returned a kick-off for 61 yards in the 3rd quarter which led to a Saints touchdown. Sort of a big deal. And more than the 30-yard average you speak of.
    ——
“Seriously there were like 4 or 5 bad calls required for that final drive. It was insane. I guess the NFL wanted one for Katrina or whatever.”
There were 3 calls looked at in the booth review, and all three were TOO CLOSE to overturn. If it had been as blatant to the refs as it was to the Vikings homers, they would have overturned them. Saying the NFL wanted one for Katrina just proves what a sorry loser you are.
    ——
“Oh well. If the Vikes can manhandle those chumps in the superdome again while avoiding crazy fumbles and officiating I’ll be able to move on. But as long as idiot fans keep making stupid comments like the Aint’s being anything BUT the luckiest NFC champ in the history of the game I’ll continue to be angry with fans of the most illiterate state in America.”
Like someone else said, your defense managed one sack which is hardly manhandling. Good luck having Brett Favre throw for 300+ again when he’s coming off surgery and skipped training camp.
As for “luck” I’ll say it again:
Saints had the #1 offense, the #1 quarterback, the #4 O-Line, the #6 rushing offense, #3 in turnovers created, won 13 games in a freaking ROW, and during the playoffs Brees threw 8 touchdowns, ZERO picks. It takes a lot more than LUCK to accomplish all of that.
And for the illiterate comment: Sando, you seem to be full of a lot of hate for a team and a city based on football. It’s too bad, you should really think about if it’s worth it to be so hateful over a GAME.

    scra22 says:
—————- You can’t take the turnovers away. They were part of the game. The Saints’ defense forced four out of five of them. And the Saints actually only scored off of one turnover, so in your imaginary world where the Vikings win and never turn the ball over, the Saints would still have scored at least 21.
    scra–ub,
turnovers are a part of the game? really? thanks for the heads up….I knew some dumb ass would feel the need to point the obvious out…but lets just say this…you better hope you get five more if you want any chance in the opener….another 12 men in the huddle penalty at the end of regulation will be needed too, throw in an overtime drive where your team actually makes only one play for 10 yards yet still finds itself in field goal range..i hope someone thanked the officials…but then again perhaps that might be just a little too much to ask after all the good fortune the Aints rec’d last season.
btw, reading williams comments reminds me why he isn’t a head coach..usually coaches have to worry about their players saying stupid shit…unfortunately for the Saints they have to worry about their defensive coordinator…somebody tell me he was at least drunk we he opened his yap.
The funniest part about the whole thing is that run defense is soft as a babies bottom…comical.

I don’t know what Williams is so proud of. In the Saints/Vikings playoff game, except for the turnovers the Saints were outplayed by the Vikings. Mr. Peterson needs to work on his fumbling, if the Vikings want to advance.
The champs have to play the Steelers this season. In fact, the Champs play the AFCN this season or the Ravens and Bengals . The Saints are going to get their lumps. The Steelers bring their own physical style to the game.

I guess the Steelers weren’t physical enough last year.

purplepride5150, are you seriously that dumb? The league files a report after every game and notes the calls they got wrong. In the NFCCG there were 4 calls that were incorrect according the what I read on this website from Viking fans. None of those calls happened in OT. All of your what if scenarios are great but not realistic.

A few comments on the comments I read above.
Yes I was sick of hearing how the Saints rebuilt the city. Sure, it was great to see that Monday game when the Saints beat the Falcons. That was an amazing moment in sports. I didn’t need to hear about it during the pre-game, in-game, and post-game. Due the fact that they mentioned it so many times, you do have to wonder if the NFL urged the refs to call or not call the penalties they did.
Second, The Vikings did come close, but they lost. It’s something that has happened before to them and it will happen again. Turnovers killed the Vikings.
Third, when watching NFL Replay the other week and Mike Pereira has to explain almost every play in the 4th quarter, it gets ridiculous. In a game of that caliber you have that many explanations about how the Saints won the game, you have to wonder again why those calls were made/not-made.
Fourth, this was a stupid comment by Gregg Williams. Personally I like Drew Brees and I was angry when the Vikings didn’t go for him earlier. I liked him in San Diego and I like him in New Orleans. However, a D-Coordiantor shouldn’t be talking about the opposing QBs. Do you hear Leslie Frazier coming out and talking about how his Defense will “Send Messages?” No! The main difference is, Leslie is head-coaching material and Gregg is not. If I was an owner/GM, Gregg Williams would’ve blown his interview with my team right here. Sure, Rex Ryan was good in his first year, but let’s see the Jets stumble, Rex’s loudmouth will be tossed out of New York quick! Being a loudmouth just doesn’t work in the NFL.
