Rex Ryan makes another bold proclamation

ESPN’s Adam Schefter took a bus trip to Jets camp today.  As the Schefter Cruiser leaves each camp, someone from the team signs the club’s logo.

Today, Jets coach Rex Ryan did the honors.  And he lingered like a guy trying to figure out how to fit as much Chinese food as possible on one buffet plate.

As it turns out, Ryan was signing more than his name.  He also added the following message.

“Soon to be champs.”

Yeah, this should be a damn good season.  The Jets have one of the biggest bull’s-eyes that any team ever has worn, and Ryan happily has sewn the thing onto the back of every player’s jersey.

I think Rex spent too much time in Baltimore. Always writing checks his a$$ can’t cash. You need to win SOMETHING to get a bull’s eye for team’s gunning for you. They didnt even win there division last year. The only reason they got in the playoffs last year is because the Bengals and Colts sat there starters in the last two weeks. They havent shown me anything .
Until then, trim some of that bacon of your neck Rex.

If the Jets don’t make the playoffs then Mr. Ryan will begin to be seen as a loud mouth with no credibility. A joke. Some obviously see him that way now, but he’s playing a risky game. The New York media doesn’t suffer fools easily, and that’s a powerful bunch.

  34. lamajet says: Aug 5, 2010 6:57 PM

Why is it always haters or mega-fans?
Jets have a decent chance at a very good season, but so much depends on Sanchez. Running game and defense will be good, but maybe not as good as last year. And face it, the Jets were given their shot at the playoffs last year—they made a run once in, but they were barely a playoff team.
I don’t know if Sanchez has it in him to be The Man yet, if ever. If not, they’re only going to do okay. My guess is 9-7.

“how can any of us even care to follow your dumb ass site?”
    And yet, here you are.
“A Packers-Jets SB with Bert sitting at home watching would be awfully sweet.”
    Not to mention delusional.
“On paper they are stacked but after last year their schedule got cranked up a few notches.”
Hey, genius, the NFL stopped basing schedules on previous year records a long time ago. They’ll basically have the same schedule as the rest of the division so you won’t be able to complain about the unfairness of the system when they finished 3rd.

Jets are quickly becoming the most overrated team in the NFL.

  41. Other Bears says: Aug 5, 2010 7:16 PM

    Think about this.
    A) Yes – they backed into the playoffs as a wild card with two gimmies, —-but then they beat two division champs (one of whom game them one of the gimmies) to get to the Championship game, so don’t talk about them as if they didn’t accomplish anything last year.
    B) Rex Ryan is writting checks his butt can’t cash, he’s all talk and he’s got nothing to back it up, right? ….except the team is buying in. No other team is developing this kind of mentality and it’s going to help the Jets. An entire offseason of getting pumped up and hearing that you are going to win it all is a lot better for your mojo than thinking, “I sure hope we can do what it takes to make the playoffs this year.” …and it takes mojo to win.
Have you ever done the test where you hold your arms out and someone tries to push them down and can’t? After trying that, the person hurls a bunch of insults at you and the next time your arms drop easily. Rex knows what he’s doing, and it’s great for all of us because it’s fun to watch. I’m just surprised that so few are showing his philosiphy the respect it deserves. If nothing else, he’s got the balls to call his shot without fear of “jinxing” it like anyone else would.
Nice work, Rex. I’m no Jets fan, but I’ll be watching them.

Jets are going to be a good team. Rex Ryan is exactly the type coach this team needed. What makes it all work for Rex, is that the team and players believe in him. Jets fans will wax and wane with each win and loss. They play Baltimore and New England at home and then travel to Miami for their first three games, all nationally televised. If they open up 1-2, or Namath forbid, 0-3, there will be a great gnashing of teeth.
Can you imagine, Rexy baby on the sideline with his sphincter literally wired shut, trying to avoid 0-3 while playing the Dolphins?

NY Mets says “the Jets were one half away from the Super Bowl.” Okay, if by that you mean they did take the field in the 2nd half of the AFC championship game, then yes, they were a half away from the Super Bowl. Unfortunately for them, the Colts also took the field and shellacked them. No one in the AFC can better the Colts. My only Super Bowl question is will it be Indy vs. Dallas, New Orleans, Minnesota, or Green Bay.

So Revis, the best corner in the NFL, has reported to training camp and that threat of holding out was just for show?
Sorry but NE doesn’t need Mankins. NY needs Revis.

  62. Champ Daily says: Aug 5, 2010 7:55 PM

It does sound like every time Florio is talking about the Jets he kills them. It is pretty obvious. Being totally non-biased, I think the Jets will win the Superbowl. But only if they get the Revis deal done. Without Revis they won’t even make the playoffs. I can’t understand for the life of me why they don’t just get the deal done, especially with so much riding on this season…I don’t blame him for wanting to be the highest paid corner, he deserves that, and at the same time, I don’t blame Rex for not saying he is the best corner. It was somethiong that we already knew, it’s not like Rex had to point it out. So everyone who blames Rex, and sayd that he started it by saying it, they don’t know what they are talking about. The whole league already knew he was the best!

  63. DisturbedShifty says: Aug 5, 2010 7:55 PM

@ NYMets- How do you figure the Jets upgraded more than anyone else? Because of LT, Cromortie and Holmes? Most anaylists agree that the Jets actually downgraded because of those additions along with the release of last years running backs and Faneca.
Instead of keeping the backs from last year they are now depending on a RB at the end of his carrer and a second year RB that had flashes during, what, six games? Holmes isn’t even a true number one. If he was the Steelers would never have let him go. And Cromortie isn’t what he used to be.
That all being said, I do think the AFC East is going to be a slug fest this year. But I don’t think the Patriots are going to be in the mix. I honestly think the division comes down between the Jets and the Dolphins.
Oh, and there is just as much discontent amongst the Jets as there is in New England.

  64. smithopher says: Aug 5, 2010 7:55 PM

@ NYMets – I agree with you man. I feel like New England has a few key players that aren’t happy, Ben isn’t going to come out week 5 and play his best, he’s gonna warm up by week 8… Miami will be exposed, they won a close game at home and that ridiculous shit that happened in the meadowlands in the 3rd quarter was crazy. the jets outplayed them on special teams 3 quarters of the game and definitely outplayed them on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Baltimore and Indy are the two biggest contenders in my mind, and Baltimore has a weak secondary to play against the Jets solid WR lineup. If the Jets meet them and Sanchez improves at all this season, they’ll win. Houston has it tough because they almost just get handed two losses by the Colts, and the AFC East will surely have at least two teams in the post season again.

It’ll be interesting to see how the AFC East unfolds.
I like what Rex brings to the table. He’s one of those guys that is fun to root against (or for if you’re unfortunate enough to actually be a Jets fan).
Realistically though, I see the AFC East as a two team race between the Patriots and Dolphins with the Jets finishing in a distant 3rd. Probably 6-10 or 7-9. I’m just not sold on Sanchez yet. I think he’s still too inconsistent.
I also think there is a void in the character department. When this team starts out 0-3, its going to be a pretty ugly locker room.
For some reason, franchises seem to develop personalities. The Jets are a franchise that relishes the role of the underdog but also are incapable of handling prosperity. Perhaps it has something to do playing in the media capital of the world but whenever this franchise plays with large expectations, they fall on their faces. They spend too much time reading their own press clippings about how good their supposed to be and forget that greatness is born out of hard work and dedication on the football field.
    My predictions:
    Patriots 12-4
    Dolphins 11-5
    Jets 7-9
Bills 1-15 (their one victory will probably come vs the Jets)

Hey, genius, the NFL stopped basing schedules on previous year records a long time ago. They’ll basically have the same schedule as the rest of the division so you won’t be able to complain about the unfairness of the system when they finished 3rd.
    ___________________________________
db3300…… they do still base part of the schedule on record. However, once again since they only finished second in the division it won’t be a huge jump for them. You play your 3 division opponents 2. You then play two other divisions, an AFC and an NFC. 6 + 4 + 4. So those last two games are based on where you finished the year before. Each team is matched up with the other two teams in the conference. So since the Jets finished 2nd in the AFC East. They are now playing the NFC North and AFC North. The last two games added to their schedule will be the second place teams in the AFC South and the AFC West. Hence the Jets play the Broncos (2nd in the AFC West) and the Texans (2nd in the AFC South). Meanwhile the Patriots get the Colts and the Chargers. The Dolphins get Oakland and Tennesee and the Bills get the Jaguars and the Chiefs

To show so much disdain for a winner is only human nature. Subconciously you know your team is inferior and you can not give reasonable arguements. You are frustrated, so you “hate”. By “sticking your tongue out” and “calling names”, you are actually giving the winner, (Jets), respect.

The last time I heard this much talk coming from a team about being the champs it was the Chargers, and we all know how that turned out! LT should feel right at home!
There is nothing wrong with confidence. Every team should be confident about its chances. This kind of talk though leads to overconfidence. It leads to the team (and the coach in this instance) believing the hype. They begin acting like a ring is a foregone conclusion, and they stop working as hard to get it. Then they implode.
This implosion is gonna be fun to watch. Figure about week 5 or so.

Let’s keep it real everyone, if the Jets manage to win the AFC East this season that would be fantastic.
And with the success of their unexpected playoff run last season it’s not unreasonable to see them play in AFC championship game again.
But the only way the Jets can win the division is to take out the Fish. I expect a split vs. N.E., a sweep of the Bills. If the Jets sweep the Fish, the division is theirs.

SO the Jets went out and bought a bunch of old, washed up players and let a couple good players walk. Now they think they have the best defense in the league solely b/c they have Revis. You guys are on something. No way your secondary can cover the Bengals receivers/TE’s. You have Revis. That’s it. Cromartie is a washed up old man. He’s nothing but a name now. Revis can’t cover Ocho, T.O., Shipley, Caldwell and Gresham all at once. You guys are going to get smoked last year. And to make it even sweeter, just have your fat coach keep running his c*ck sucker. By week 9 he’ll be saying “we’re already out of the playoffs” in his post-game news conference just like he did last year. He sure had a lot of confidence then didn’t he? Sounds to me like upper management is making sure he doesn’t make a dumba$$ comment like that again. Jets go 8-8 at best.

I hate trash talkers. Always have, always will. The Jets have a lot of talent on their roster, but it’s overshadowed by a loudmouth who thinks he’s Tony Robbins. Half of the stuff he says is fine, and just gets blown out of proportion because the media isn’t used to coaches simply being candid. Half of it is just plain ridiculous, though, and he doesn’t know how to reign in the ridiculous. I won’t be surprised if the Jets go 7-9 and miss the playoffs. I won’t be surprised if they go 11-5 with a deep playoff run. That’s the beauty of the NFL. It’s unpredictable.

Dude, come on, really? You’re a Dolphin fan. You live in FL more than likely. FL has a unemployment rate at %12, so don’t even act like you have any of that loser. All you got is memories of Dan and pipe dreams about a 7-9 Dolphins team that regressed this offseason and is starting around 8 1st or 2nd year players on both sides of the ball. Not to mention that everyone in Miami is still clinging onto the hopes of Ronnie Brown staying healthy for one year, just ONE freaking year. And don’t give me that bullshit, “Well we still got Ricky!”…OK hang your hat on that than, good luck with a 33 year old stoner. I bet you this time next year some one will be producing a movie called “Forgetting Brandon Marshall”, classic. I could go on alot longer but why waste my time when come around Halloween you guys won’t even frequent this site anymore because LeBron & Co. will be suiting up and the Phins will be 1-6, you fair-weather arrogant loser Dolfans.

  127. Hugh Jorgan says: Aug 6, 2010 11:56 AM

So nothing has changed….the Dolphin fans troll Jets posts and start mocking the team, then the Jets fans get riled up and defensive and start posting, then the Dolphins fans call the Jets fans idiots, loud mouths, and other brilliant observations, such as “you backed into the playoffs”, and “your coach is fat”. Seriously???
To those of us who aren’t fans of either team, Dolphins fans appear a little scared, maybe even a little jealous, and Jets fans need to stop taking the bait they are throwing out there. It’s getting old. Patriots are in the same division and they aren’t posting mindless crap. Why? Probably because the Jets don’t scare them, and they’re not jealous.
That being said, Rex Ryan is great! His a*s kicking, “we’re #1″ attitude makes for great football, and I wish more coaches had his spirit, rather than resembling robots in pressers and on the sidelines. He’s great to watch!! His team believes in him! And I can’t wait for Hard Knocks!

Scared? Jealous? That’s hilarious. Will it be a good matchup? Yes. And there are a couple of Pats fans posting on here, as well as a lot of other teams’ fans. When a loud mouth coach makes comments like Rexy does, it attracts hits so PFT wins and that’s what it’s all about. Do we find the jests funny? Heck yeah. Making all their statements and not having won anything yet.
I think all coaches have the same attitude, just keep it within the walls of their own team so if/when they come tumbling down they won’t be the laughing stocks of the league.

The Jets had the easiest playoffs of any team. It’s easy to play lose and fast when you have nothing to lose. They weren’t supposed to be there, they weren’t supposed to win.
Teams that play at home in the first two rounds usually come out tight and either win because they are just better or lose because they played it too close to the vest or played with far too many errors. Alot of teams would love to be 9-7 and go into a division champs building. If they lose they are supposed to lose.
