Dez Bryant on field playing catch, optimistic

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports live from the Hall of Fame Game at Fawcett Stadium that Cowboys rookie receiver Dez Bryant was on the field for pre-game warmups playing catch. Bryant, dealing with a high right ankle sprain, was in a walking boot.

Approached by La Canfora on the sidelines, Bryant sounded optimistic about his injury.

“There’s no telling for sure, but I think it might be even sooner than that,” responded Bryant when asked if he’d be back in 3-4 weeks. “It’s coming along pretty good.”

La Canfora notes that the Cowboys are being cautious with Bryant’s injury, but observed the No. 24 overall pick “moving around well” about two hours before the exhibition opener.

Bryant, of course, will not play in Sunday night’s game. We might not see him for the entire preseason. Cowboys receivers competing for roster spots such as Kevin Ogletree, Jesse Holley, Manuel Johnson, and Titus Ryan will dominate playing time while Jon Kitna, Stephen McGee, and undrafted rookie Matt Nichols quarterback the offense.
