Tomlinson shines at Jets scrimmage

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson, cut in San Diego and assumed by most to be deep into the twilight of his career, opened some eyes with a strong performance at his new team’s intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday night.

Tomlinson scored a 70-touchdown on a pass that, per Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post, traveled 30 in the air.  And so (engaging abacus) that means Tomlinson ran away from the defense over the remaining 40 yards.

“This is what he brings to the table,” Ryan said of Tomlinson. “We never
had that when Leon Washington went out last year.  Look at [Tomlinson’s] receiving skills. Put a linebacker on him
and good luck.”

On the play in question, L.T. made David Harris look like a guy who shouldn’t be thinking about getting a new contract.

“My plan was to show people that I can still play this game and that I
still have a lot left in the tank,” Tomlinson said.

Fine, but it was a scrimmage.  Tomlinson supposedly has been playing with a chip on his shoulder for the past couple of years, but when it matters he’s not scoring 70-yard touchdowns.

All i know is that when L.T. played for San Diego I’d rather see him in the backfield than Darren Sproles.

AMAZING!!!!!!! He did that against that All-World defense? Now that he’s showed Rexy how super great he is, guess he better get in the line for a bigger payday.
What a tub of Lard to bring Leon Washington up. I guess he’s never watched any tape of LW during the regular season games that matter because he was probably their best player at times.

  5. MrHumble says: Aug 8, 2010 8:30 AM

Rex must have to spend hours each day thinking of which player he is going to brag up the next day and everything he can say about him. Personally I would rather read BF posts, about someone who has accomplished something vs. someone who is all talk and hasn’t accomplished chit.

  6. Marino13 says: Aug 8, 2010 8:32 AM

wait – i thought that defense was the best around??? What happened how did that happen even in practice, I dont understand…Im sure he will rush for maybe 2000 yards and 1000 rec yards this season…no doubt…..6-10!

  7. ejtowne says: Aug 8, 2010 8:35 AM

Tomlinson will surprise everybody this year. He will show a gear that nobody thought he had, just to prove to one and all that he still has gas left in the tank. I just hope he doesn’t find that gear when he plays Buffalo!

  8. 8man says: Aug 8, 2010 8:37 AM

    LMAO!!
i told everyone the Jets defense is OVERRATED.
Last season was a fluke and the Jesters should not even been in the playoffs. With all the MEME ME players this fraud team added, they will still be medicre this season.
If Mark Sanchez and hasbeen L.T. can burn the Jets defense, then my gosh what do you think Brady,Moss,Henne,Marshall,Favre,Peterson,Rodgers,Jennings,Schaub,Johnson,Palmer,Owens,Cutler,Knox, etc will do?
keep drinking the Kool-Aid Jester fans, you are going to be sorely dissappointed this season

Shonn Greene is better AND more durable at this point, trust me. Not that LT isn’t a HOF rb, and not that LT won’t have 500yds and 5tds this year, but that ain’t gonna make my fantasy football highlight reel. He WILL help the jets, though, just like 500yds and 5td will help any team….

  19. Paracelsus says: Aug 8, 2010 9:09 AM

Do we really need to make a point about David Harris’s contract situation based on one play in an intra-squad scrimmage. And this is done with the usual “look how good the offensive player is” and how bad the defensive player is” Is it really both or did one do something extraordinary. Let us go over this film with more analysts weighing in, please. I will not rest until I understand this play.
I know these are (hopefully) glib comments, but they do wear out at least this reader.

Can’t wait til we get to mid-season and the Jets have imploded (as well as Rex’s stomach when the staples give out) and we can quit hearing about jets this and jets that…….i don’t recall ever hearing or reading so much about a team that has done so little. The only way the Jets accomplish anything this year is if they have someone like Referee Pete Morelli doing all their games……or a hurricane hits NY/NJ.

  29. bwisnasky says: Aug 8, 2010 10:10 AM

It’s a scrimmage.. it really doesn’t mean too much… but if it does, why does it necessarily say good things about LT? Why can’t it just as easily say negative things about the Jets D, especially David Harris?

  30. 305phinphan says: Aug 8, 2010 10:12 AM

I remember LT saying the same thing before last season.

He had another terrible season last year so what is going to be the difference this year? As a Dolphin fan in the same division I’m not worried about him at all. 38. NYMets says: Aug 8, 2010 10:38 AM

Yes, the Jets blow and the Jets suck and they’re overrated and Rex Ryan is fat. But at least this team will get a shot at winning a Super Bowl either this season or another. That’s an opportunity that Dan Marino will never have again after blowing it for 17 SEASONS! And Henne never will either unless he moves to another team.

  39. Rmbay says: Aug 8, 2010 10:47 AM

I, for one, hope Rex keeps churning out the massive hyperbole. It had its place last year when he was trying to inspire Sanchez and the team to a new level of confidence. Now that Rex has them thinking they’re the best thing to happen to the NFL in years they’ve opened themselves up to a whole new world of discontent and finger pointing when adversity hits.

yes, the very same jets defense that tamed the so-called high flying chargers offense in the playoffs. the best part was when turds like you said the jets had no chance because of the height of the chargers’ receivers. the best part of that game was seeing rivers on the sideline with a “i’m a p*ssy look” on his face.

3rd down back, ok. can block a little, catch well, threat to throw it, pedestrian runner now.
and that throwing threat is way decreased since everyone knows he cant run away from anyone anymore. unless its his own defense in a scrimmage.

  56. jcdavey says: Aug 8, 2010 2:47 PM

i’d have been more surprised if it would have been a 70 yard rush where he broke tackles
but then agai it’s a scrimmage, i wouldn’t really be surprisd by anything done in a scrimmage, that said, if he catches some 70 yard tds in the regular season, that’s not all that surprising, as his pass catching would be the last thing to go , and his rushing ability, the first.
the jets picked him up to be a pass catching/goal line specialist, and that’s pretty much all he’s good for at this point in his aged career.

LT out ran David Harris? LMAO What a joke! Than again another 30+ RB did the same thing last year named Ricky WIlliams. It’s amazing how ignorant the Jets and their fans are. They talk about the Superbowl as if they did something last year. 9-7 during the regular season. Two wins came from teams resting there starters for the playoffs. They finished 2-4 in their own division (SWEEP BY THE PHINS) and won a couple of playoff games because opposing team kicker decided not to bring his “A” game. Now all of a sudden they are going to the Superbowl and are gonna win? LMAO!!! All Rex Ryan is doing is letting the team and fans up for a huge disappointment. What’s new for the Jets though? Uh, here’s a little quote from your boy Don Shula from yesterday…
Shula also gave his take on the New York Jets.
“The Jets are getting better,” Shula said. “They felt they added some reliable pieces. They have the experienced running in [LaDainian] Tomlinson in case the youngster [Shonn Greene] can’t do it. And I’m a big Jason Taylor fan. They went on that roll at the end of last year, and I don’t think that was a fluke. They played well at the right time. So the Jets are good, too.”
I think Shula might know a good team when he sees one, as for you, keeping watching football through those Aqua Vision googles you Dolfans wear every year.

  76. KoaMisiFan says: Aug 9, 2010 10:20 AM

  77. KoaMisiFan says: Aug 9, 2010 10:26 AM

    @NewYorkSackExchange2010
I read that quote. If you think he was so high on the jests being so great, why did he pick the Pats to win the Division? Did he say the jests will take 2nd place?
And as you noted he said: “THEY felt they added…..”. Where did he say I feel they added? And I’ve followed Shula throughout his entire career and can’t recall him saying a negative comment about ANY team so if you know of one, please post it.
As for you, I’ll take off my Aqua Vision “googles” when you take your green “googles” off. I’ll bet you were on here a couple years ago calling your coach the Mangenious, weren’t you?

  78. dolfanSS says: Aug 9, 2010 12:31 PM

But, PFT is grateful that your jealousy and level of boredom makes you post on every Jets article. They thank you for driving up the hits on the site.

    @Hugh Jorgan
Hate to tell you this bud, but when you start getting a lot of posts on PFT (you know, the RUMOR MILL) it just goes to show that your team is a laughing stock. Guess what? Your team is a laughing stock!!!!!!!

I thought I said something nice!

Apologies…wasn’t directed at you, dolfanSS. Not in the least. You definitely said something nice. I just clicked submit before your post appeared.
And, I am not a Jets fan, KoaMISSY. Just for the record. Just calling out immaturity when I read it. My brother is a huge Jets fan, and my father is a huge Dolphins fan. So, nice assumption, but you’re wrong.
I’ve been a follower of this site for years. The Saints were getting lots of posts last year, and so were the Vikings. Guess what…they both made the post-season. One even won the Big Game. Yeah, they were both huge laughing stocks. Wow, guess you’re right!
    Tool.

    @dolfanSS
I started out trying to be reasonable and since I didn’t agree with everything the jests fans believed I started getting called “F-this” and “F-that”. So I decided to come down to their level and just laugh at them. They think their team is a shoe-in and I don’t.

    Yeah Hugh Dorkin
I guess you think all these laughable jests articles will get the jests to the Super Bowl? You sure sound like a typical jests fan.
    Tard.

They didn’t bring him in to be a #1 RB to my knowledge. But LdT is going to show people that he’s back? Won’t this “chip on his shoulder” that we all hear about incessantly get in the way of how the Jests plan on using him?
