Broken leg for 49ers' Eric Heitmann

The 49ers just got some bad news about their starting center.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that center Eric Heitmann broke his left fibula during this morning’s practice.

According to Barrows, the 49ers now need to see if there’s any ankle damage in addition to the broken bone. The best case scenario is no ligament damage, in which case the broken bone would force Heitmann to miss six to eight weeks, which would mean he’d only miss a couple games at the start of the regular season.

The 30-year-old Heitmann has started all 16 games for the 49ers in each of the last three seasons. The last time he missed a game was in 2006, when he broke his left tibia and missed the last two games of the season.

David Baas and Tony Wragge will compete for the starting center job while Heitmann is out.

Dang, SF seems to have the injury bug pretty bad this year

So will this be the excuse when the 9ers fall on their faces, again, and miss the playoffs, again?
Lol better hope Davis and Iupati don’t bust. Davis is Andre Smith Jr, and iupati has to hold and play crappy competition to look good. Iupati should do fine against the Rams, but we’ll see how good he is when he plays against Williams, Dockett and Mebane…

Better now than in Week 1. Should be out for 6-8 weeks. That puts him back around Week 5 at the latest, assuming re-hab goes well.
Niners can move Baas or Snyder to C, or pick up a cheap vet off waivers to stop the leak.

    GO Seahawks!

@lieutenant Dan’s Ice Cream, well it doesnt really matter if they suck or not does it. Their backups beat you guys 2x last year

  10. Black Heart Silver Soul says: Aug 9, 2010 7:17 PM

    GO RAIDERS!!!

  11. Sinister79 says: Aug 9, 2010 8:06 PM

Niners looked to have decent depth at Linebacker and O-line. A few practices later and that depth is all gone.

    Hendeez:
I am neither a cards nor a hawk fan, but I know you 9ers will not win that division. Cards are still the team to beat and if Okung keeps Hasselbeck out of a coma the hawks are still a better team.
Oh and wasn’t it the Seahawks who beat you guys in like week 15 or whatever to eliminate you from wild card contention? You sure as shit didn’t beat them twice since Seattle obviously got the last laugh…

Key piece to their ground and pound approach they want to run this year. Not good when you have 2 Rookies on the O-line with a new Center. Well thats what the pre-season is for. Its their division to lose. Worst division in the NFL

LIEUTENANTDAN, it was Philly who officially eliminated the 9ers from the playoffs. Im not too familiar with the 9ers O-line, but from what I’ve heard, they have some road graders who can push the D-line. If so, Gore should have a big season. I think SF will win their division this season.

For DH & Black Heart Silver Soul…
    – Only the fans of teams that picked in top ten of the NFL Draft would cheer other teams injuries. We forgive you…we understand…you dont have much else to cheer for.
    For Lt. Dan’s Ice Cream…
    – If you thought the Seahawks were better than the Niners last year…you are an idiot and revealed your lack of football knowledge.

mebane?? child please i could block that clown

  17. DH says: Aug 10, 2010 12:28 AM

@city_native, yeah we didnt have much to cheer for mostly as a result of injuries, and im sick of all the 9ersd band wagon jumpers.. 9ers were 8-8 last year and split with the seahawks. Seahawks won at home in week 12, and if hasselbeck didnt get his rib broken in week two that game would have been completely different.

@raiderrob21, worst division in the nfl? really, the afc west is the worst division in the nfl. When was the last time an afc west team won a playoff game? that division is weak and i cant wait for the seahawks to play them this year. the nfc west overall will dominate the afc west this year when they go head up.

I love how the haters all come rushing in to point fingers and laugh because our starting Center is hurt. Its not the end of the world for us. Actually, we’ll be just fine if not better off. Heitman is more a technique and intellect player and was pushed around some what last year. We now have David Bass taking snaps at Center, who was a high grade Center coming out of Michigan when he was drafted. The only thing that happened with this injury is that we lost our starting Center for a couple of meaningful games, but we got stronger and meaner on the line. We’ll be fine, trust me. And the haters that are already talking about Davis and Iupati like they’re scrubs, we’ll just wait and see. Haha.

@crabman82, mebane would make you look like mike singletary with his pants down at halftime, aka a pillow biter

A Seahawks fan claims that injuries were the reason for another losing season? If I had a nickel for … oh but you already know that phrase. Being a Seahawks fan must be so easy…blame every losing season on injuries.
    How about this:
    – Your line is pourous
    – Your QB gets hurt every year because he is OLD
    – Your WR core is horrible.
    – Your RB’s were laughable
Congrats…you beat a mediocre 49ers team late in the year. I was there. It does not mean you were the better team though. For example, the 49ers beat the Cardinals twice last year….does that mean they were better…no. The Cardinals won the division. Get better football knowledge son.
