Glazer gets the real scoop behind Favre's waffling

We continue to be amazed by those who have suggested that Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Jay Glazer of FOX somehow made up the fact that Brett Favre texted a number of his teammates about his intent to retire.

Favre didn’t help matters when he lied about the texts, essentially calling the teammates that publicly confirmed the news liars too.

Six days after the drama started, Glazer uncovers what really happened in an excellent piece for FOX.  (We want more of these, Jay.)   Favre indeed sent texts to many teammates, convincingly telling them he was done because of health reasons.

That inspired a “two-pronged” attack by the Vikings organization and players to beg, plead, and cajole Favre into reconsidering.  The Vikings offered Favre a “much more lucrative package” to entice him back.  (Glazer mentions $20 million.)

It sounds like the love Vikings teammates showed may have meant more to Favre.  According to Glazer, not many Packers, if any, asked him to reconsider his retirement.  The Jets seemed happy he was gone.

“He’s torn,” said one Vikings player. “I think in his mind he
was done, but loves the guys in this locker room and doesn’t want to
let them down. He didn’t want to [come back], but I don’t think he can
say no to these guys. He’s tortured.”

It seems faintly ridiculous, not to mention melodramatic, that Favre would need so much ego massaging. But that doesn’t make the reporting any less true.

I fully expect Favre to play, just like many of you.  But it’s hardly surprising that Favre doesn’t know himself yet; that he has to feel wanted, that he’s struggling with the decision every step of the way.

If Brett Favre could stop himself from becoming a parody of Brett Favre, he probably would have by now.

    Myeehhh…Glazer….
I’d say it’s all in that grotesquly disproportionate growth protruding from the top of his tiny Dwarven shoulders.

If you were a Viking player and saw the QB options, you’d have a love fest for Lord Favre too. The Packers and Jets clearly didn’t need the drama anymore and had better options.

His ankle will prove fine – after the New Orleans game!

Brett Favre has a long history of lying, anything he can do to try and make himself look better he will. When will people learn?
Except in the case of FOF he worships at the alter of the holy favre. All the waffling, throwin people under the bus & some of the biggest big game melt down’s we’ve ever seen at the QB position – are like JFK’s assasination & 9/11 – all fabricated & never happened.

  6. jersey73 says: Aug 9, 2010 12:57 PM

If Favre is healthy enough to play for $20 million, but not for $13 million…then I think we can finally throw away the myth that he is a “true team player” and “plays, not for money, but for the love of the game”.

Rosenthal, I just read Glazeyereyeballs half hearted, lame, and TOTALLY UNCONVINCING, “PROOF” and I’m even less inclined to believe him. Where is the “great journalism”? Where are the NAMES, NAMED?
Vizzy Skank Ho? Who admitted he never even SPOKE TO FAVRE, PERSONALLY? Did Glazer offer to stand eyeball to HIS BALLS for 30 minutes while Vizzy gave the breakdown? You’re as bad as Glazer and probably even shorter.

i mean who are we to believe Brett ‘look at me look at me I SAID LOOK AT ME DAMMIT” Favre or someone with tons of cred like
    Glazer.
Favre continues to show how utterly classless he is by throwing teammates under the bus (remember ‘it means alot to me how they want me back”) Great leadership skills Brett. oh and hes all pissy because BOTH of his last 2 teams, thats 53 men x 2, well they were glad his ass hit the pavement.
106 men who were his teammates, some for a decade or more, who he was supposedly ‘in the foxhole” with AND Jay Glazer cant be wrong.
Brett face it, you are the stuff that creepy egomaniacs are made of. Here’s hoping he retires
    for good.

  10. Jeremy says: Aug 9, 2010 1:01 PM

That Favre is a liar is hardly news to those of us who have followed him and his career closely.
But it’s easier to believe in a media witch hunt than it is to believe an athlete we love isn’t who we thought he was.
So even with this, the denials will continue.

  11. gbarbs says: Aug 9, 2010 1:02 PM

Wow, some more fantastically bulletproof factual reporting by Glazer!?! Is there any way you can get the Star or National Enquirer to give us their fact-based reporting on this subject?! It’s amazing how idiots like Glazer continue to make themselves look like incompetent fools over and over and over. Glazer knows about as much as I do on the subject but the difference is I don’t try and claim I know the facts. I have no idea if there were texts sent or not but there’s no way I believe another report from Glazer until he confirms he actually saw a text or proves it in some way. Thus far he’s just another TMZ schmuck!

With Favre playing in the NFL for 20 of my 24 years of life I’ve been one of his biggest fans through every debacle.
I finally agree with everybody else that this has gone on long enough. Regardless of his injury concerns he should commit one way or another. If the iron-man can’t play until week 3 he should NOT wait until then to announce it. Decide now, and get on the field when your cleared.

  18. JerkStore says: Aug 9, 2010 1:06 PM

I would guess the Packers players didn’t beg Favre in part because they knew they still had a shot with the other QB on their roster- and it’s obvious the Vikings players don’t feel the same.

Oh yes they did! For four years keeping him coming back until he actually, publicly, retired for the first three times. After he quit and cried on tv, then called TT and wanted to come back, then quit again before ultimately starting the circus before training camp… they wanted him back. After that….they had enough.

For the record I hope he does come back – Good or bad, I enjoy watching him play!

  29. CaptainManhattan says: Aug 9, 2010 1:13 PM

Favre said the same thing to Peter King about his arm last year and how he didn’t think he could play 16 games. Who cares what he says. Maybe Glazer can start writing about what he is eating at different training camps because that’s really interesting to people who aren’t pushing 300 pounds.

  30. Munze Konza says: Aug 9, 2010 1:15 PM

  36. TimTheEnchanter says: Aug 9, 2010 1:23 PM

I’d be much more likely to believe this “he’s tortured”, and he ” felt he was done last week” BS if he didn’t immediately lie about it and try to deny it. If that’s really how he felt, he could have just said so.
It’s about the drama and/or the cash.

  37. JimmySmith says: Aug 9, 2010 1:24 PM

This is Favre’s world, the rest of us are just living in it.
No doubt he lied, he will lie again when the media begins to press him about Jenn Sterger and his now famous cock texting pics.
Next up, Favre will take the extra $7 million over and above his $13 million and then act like he would play just for the love of the game. Only the Viking fans will be buying this sad act but when you haven’t been to a Superbowl in over 34 years and you are a desperate homosexual scorned lover, this little details can be justified as evidenced by the Viking fan’s posts on this subject.
The Vikings will surely set a new record, for most money paid for a season ending INT. For the rest of the football world, this is just a sad, depressing display of ego and self inflated worth but to the Vikings, its business as usual.

Glazer could have made this entire story up, and probably did, as far as we know.
Didn’t all the “sources” say there was a “schism” in the locker room last year? I wonder were these the same “sources” or different “sources?”

“When he left the Packers there wasn’t much love, if any, from teammates asking him to reconsider. And there certainly wasn’t any from Jets’ players.”
The Packers were tired of his antics. Had AR failed they would have wanted him back. You don’t think teams like the 49ers, Cleveland and TB would liked a good QB in the past, no matter the price?
And a few of his Jets teammates had good things to say. One of the most vocal Jet against him, Thomas Jones, was so loved by the organization he was just let go.

How is throwing an INT to Porter a great season? There is only one thing that matters, and it is the Super Bowl. He has choked away more in the play-offs than any other player; a stat pad-der (look at the records he hold with only one Super Bowl win). If it wasn’t for Howard in the ’96 Super Bowl, who knows how that game would of ended because he couldn’t repeat when he went back in ’97.
    Viking fans are so delusional.

  47. Caldon says: Aug 9, 2010 1:35 PM

Yes, because we should clearly believe everything a media type tells us…
First, Glazer reports that Favre is done, then he gives himself room so that no matter what Favre does he is “right”. He did the same in this piece. He says Favre is now coming back……but at the bottom says a source tells him he wouldn’t be surprised if he does retire and that is why he is going to the Doctor. AGAIN, if Favre retires he is right, if he plays he is right. Then we won’t even talk about the discrepancies between the original stories about who Favre told, how they were told, players now backing off comments etc.
Face it, Glazer got it wrong and has since scrambled to cover his ass so no matter what Favre does he can claim he is “right”. He also blew your little stories about Favre wanting more time and money. So which is it? Is he right or wrong on that too.
    LOL at the whole thing.

  50. KingJoe! says: Aug 9, 2010 1:38 PM

i love that he has already become a paraody of himself. If you recall the Sears spot he did, you can see he loves this stuff. I imagine now he can do a spot for Eggo.
However, karma is tough. I imagine if he comes back this year, he will suffer a career ending injury. Hope though that karma doesnt hurt him so much it limits his future altogether.

  51. Who is Mike Jones says: Aug 9, 2010 1:39 PM

First off, I love the Favre drama. Its hard to ge tired of this soap opera. Favre lacks the confidence in his aging body to carry his team full season. Playoff football is reserved for the survivors that embarked the battle tested. He’s carrying a lot of doubt! The last thing he wants to do is tarnish his legacy by laying an egg in week one by getting sacked and carried off the field. Its not a fitting way to end a carer before the season starts.
I think Favre is mentally set to retire and the text messages were sent out as “feelers.” Feelers that are very Favre like!
If chilly wants to play deep into the post season, he better fill up that charter plane and fly down to Hattiesburg and scrimmage those little high school kids and convince Favre to limp onto that team plane back to Viking nation. Timing is everything so I’d load that charter plane up after SEA preseason game, and take thier best shot.
As a Saints fan, it won’t be the same in Week one if Favre isn’t being sacked.

Why should that be so surprising? After all, it’s one of the symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which Favre has clearly always had. His annualy “retirement” announcements during Super Bowl week were just the first indication that this hillbilly thirsts for attention.

  59. SpartaChris says: Aug 9, 2010 1:53 PM

It sounds like the desperation Vikings teammates showed may have meant more to Favre. According to Glazer, not many Packers, if any, asked him to reconsider his retirement. The Jets seemed happy he was gone.
    There, fixed that for ya.
The Packers didn’t show much love because they were sick of the wishi-washiness he showed for the last 4-5 years of his career as a Packer. The whole “Will he/Won’t he” nonsense gets old after a while, and they took him at his work when he retired, saying, “I gave all I had to give to the game of football and the Green Bay Packers.”
The reason why the Vikings organization and their fans are so willing to stroke the guy’s ego is sheer desperation. With him they contend for the division and make the playoffs. Without him they’re all but done before the season even starts. It’s pathetic, really, begging a guy to come play for you because you know that’s the only way your team even competes.
And people wonder why no one has any respect for the Vikings.

Glazer has reported correctly time and time again when it comes to Favre.
2008 – he will retire (correct)
2008 – he wants to play again (correct)
2008 – he will be traded to the Jets (correct)
2008 – he talked to the Lions and divulged info on the Packers (correct)
2008 – he will retire after the season (correct)
2008 – he asked for outright release from Jets (correct)
2009 – he wants to play for Minny (correct)
2009 – he will stay retired (correct)
2009 – wait…he now wants to play due to his daughter crying (correct)
2009 – he will show up to Vikings after camp closes (correct)
2009 – schism in lacker room between he and Childress (correct)
2010 – texted people stating he will retire (correct)
    2010 – this story (correct)
Favre is a mental midget that loaths attentions and adulation. Even with all his success and stats, people still need to tell him how great he is. He leaks stories and comments through his family and agent….only to be rewarded with a larger contract. The Vikings are the only team int he NFL that will continue to enable this addict with the attention and money he so desperately needs.

So either you’re going to call Favre a liar or you’re going to call Shiancoe (and several teammates) a liar. Favre’s track record is less than stellar in this area, so most reasonable people should believe Shiancoe.
Hell, ESPN ran a poll last week asking how many people believed Favre will retire and I think 70% said they didn’t believe him. Of course he has doubts about performing at a high level and not looking like an old man who should go away.Last year he was great. He didn’t lose that talent overnight. If his ankle can hold up he will be shutting your big mouths like last year.
The media uses Favre for stories…if you think Favre asks for all the attention you are not too smart. What the hell will they(media) do when he does go away?Who will you guys cry about then? You sound like a bunch of girls….

When you write, “It seems faintly ridiculous, not to mention melodramatic, that Favre would need so much ego massaging.
I’m amazed that additional money isn’t put in the same category. How much has this guy made in his career? How much does he “need”. Melodramtic? This guy is a turd, a one-time talent who throws meaningful interceptions, now his legacy.
Remember when Betty Farve said he had a dream that he would throw a left-handed touchdown pass against the Broncos? I do. I remember at the time how arrogant that sounded. Even if he did dream it and I never thought he did, I thought, keep it to yourself, schmuck.
But that was a symptom. The disease is the ego. Eat me, Betty. You’ll never win another ring. And you can PRINT IT!

This was pathetic three years ago and with each passing day, Favre (Fav-ruh?) is chipping away at his legacy with his greed and attention-whore behaviour.
I didn’t think it could get any worse until I saw that his lap-dog Steve Mariucci had to “report” about Favre’s (Fav-ruh?) ankle on the day of the Hall-of-Fame induction.
It’s pretty sad when he can’t even let the hall of famers get their day in the sun without having Mari-Douchey fawn over him one more time.
It would be sad, if it weren’t so pathetic, but I think Favre (Fav-ruh) is borderline mentally ill.

Based on your rant/statistics, I think you mean LOVES (not LOATHS). Let’s at least be semi-intellegent. I’ve never been a Favre fan even when he was with the Packers. I just got tired of hearing my WI family go on about what an exemplary human being he was. They acted as if he was one step away from becoming a living saint. I think the best was my cousin waiting in line to have his wife sign her memoir so she could give the signed copy to my grandmother who never reads a book.
After his first “retirement”, the tone of the coverage about him changed dramatically. The sportswriters and editors knew about his self-centered, diva nature but chose not to print those stories until then. I had one family member who knew someone who worked in the Packer organization and she was the one who before didn’t think too highly of him while he was revered.
It came out that during the last couple seasons with the Packers that he showed up to training camp when the media was around but didn’t do any actual work. It also came out that he needed his own locker room because he felt he was better than the rest of the team. These were stories that journalists chose not to report.
He’s doing this for the attention and the fact he doesn’t want to go to training camp. I’m sure the extra money will get him back. The Vikings need him back. His presence and a successful season is the only way they’re going to get a new stadium.
I don’t think he has a future outside of playing football. He doesn’t come across as intelligent enough to do broadcast and commentary work.
There’s several promising college QBs who have more of a Pro style going to the draft next year. If he didn’t return or the Vikings do poorly with him, they have a shot at getting a younger, healthier player who is ready to play and is more willing to be a team player than Favre.

-Judd Zulgad, who was the first to break the story, saying his sources say the same thing (these two guys do not work together, BTW).
-Schianco confirming some of his teammates got the text
-The Vikings just “out of the blue” throwing more cash at him.
-Favre having a history of being less than truthful.
C’mon people. It one thing to say the guy gives you the best chance to win and who cares if he lies through his teeth. It’s another to continue to be willfully naive. What would the Favre haters do without a story about Brett? They would have to crawl out of their basements. If you don’t like him, that’s fine, but just move on. I find it hard to believe that Glazer actually wrote a somewhat sympathetic article about Favre. The year with the Jets, he was spewing the venom from Thompson, who had a hopeless crush on Favre until Rodgers showed up. Even better, since they were two of a kind.
Favre was always popular with his teammates. You can see that he is always surrounded by fomer Pack players after every game. With the Jets, there were two losers who complained that he did not go out with them after practice, and they are both former Jets. Favre has plenty of faults, some very disappointing, but he does not deserve all the venom that he gets.

As a Minnesota Fan who watched last season you know Brett Favre is a difference maker. Every game you have a chance to win, every third down you have a chance to convert. At any second the big play can happen. He brings an excitment to the game that was missing since the carter moss and reed days. Without him the game is not nearly as entertaining. Every other fan out there can hate all they want for favre not coming to training camp. But the simple fact is he didnt need training camp last year and he had his best season yet. He has proven that he has the heart, talent, and will to do things his way and they do work. So the players coaches and organization around him have bought into him as a player and leader and can accept that he needs his time to get committed to the team and the game.

I’m not saying I believe Favre about the texts but considering not one person has come forward who actually recieved one of these “retirement” texts, it’s tough to argue firmly against. Check your facts. Even Shiancoe said he “heard” some people got texts but he never saw them himself.
As far as Glazer/Zulgad quoting the text, the only one that I’ve seen was “this is it”. What the heck does that even mean. If that’s the entire basis for blowing up this non-story, I again call foul. Lastly, have the Vikings or Favre/Cook confirmed the increased offer? Personally, I refuse to believe anyone in this entire deal without some proof. People adamantly arguing one side or the other just look like idiots!

Never delusional, I’ve been calling for his head for some time, when he lost our first home play-off win to be exact. You could tell then that he didn’t have the it factor for play-off games, and he has proven it over and over again by his f’ed up INT’s to end a play-off games (notice it is plural, and have you noticed that he has done it now to other teams, only two years removed from the Packers?).

Kurt Warner could play this same game – as could ANY experienced and savvy QB who may want to retire but has too many fans/ FO people begging for him to return. There simply are less than a handful of qb’s in the NFL who can carry a team as Brett Farve can. But as a human element, imagine yourself at 65 planning to retire but your management team begs you to stay on your own terms. They ask you to name your own salary and hours. You discuss it with your family, and they say ‘ Go for it as long as your health allows you to enjoy your job’. Football is a young man’s game, and common sense tells us that a body can’t withstand the constant beating at an advanced age. Common sense says retire, but too many voices are begging you for ‘ one more year and we’ll get you a SB.’ Who wouldn’t waffle…

    JDUB, Jeremy & others:
You need to pick up a dictionary and look up the definitions of “correct” and “fact”. Again, I’m not saying one way or another but you look like complete morons to keep claiming concrete facts based on rumors.
    ———————————————–
Addict…..or actually you would be called an enabler. It’s the same tired story year in and year out, and you demand more “facts?”
Why in the hell would Cook/Favre confirm the increased offer? Talk about shooting themselves in the foot and confirming what everyone knows…the retirement garbage is aimed at getting more cash, and fullfilling the insatiable need to attention. Even the Viking beat writers are onto his game. This would be along the lines of the Vikings offering something to the Packers following the issuing of the tampering charges. Get a clue……

As for “ancient” championships: The Packers’ 12 World Championships are no more “ancient” than those of Babe Ruth, Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle, etc, or NBA, NHL, heavyweight boxing Championships. The “super-duper”, Roman numeral baloney is marketing, not history. If you had been there, you’d know what I’m talking about.

Where should I start, in regards to disecting your half-wit post?
First off, it’s o-r-g-a-n-i-Z-a-t-i-o-n. Secondly, how are Viking fans not loyal? We’re fans of a team that, in your opinion are ‘pathetic’, because we don’t have a Super Bowl title. It’s easy to follow a team that won championships before you were conceived. Just because some “fans” jump ship when the Vikings have a dismal season doesn’t mean the entire fanbase is like that… You’ll find that with any organiZation, including the Packers. Thirdly, get a clue, it’s wishful thinking if you believe the Vikings will be shipped out of Minnesota… a bill for the stadium will be put in place after this season, and the number of fans that have turned out to Vikings’ training camp are higher than they have ever been (with players like Peterson, Rice, Harvin , and Favre practicing on a limited basis or not at all) yet still, thousands show up to support their TEAM. So don’t act like no one shows up to Viking games, especially since they’ve sold out every game since 1997. I’ve had a great time making you look like a jackass, eventhough you do that on your own pretty well. But on occasion, I’m happy to help out.

You make me laugh. Day after day you pretenders post on here with nothing to show but insults aimed at the Packer organisation, it’s players and fans. We have experienced the ultimate high of witnessing our team reach the top. We have experienced our teams fall too ultimate lows. Either way we remain loyal to the TEAM! The packers hold a scrimmage and the fan base shows up in numbers rivaling the goals set by your franchise for season home games. Selling out a Packers game is the norm. Go ahead apply for season tickets let me know how that turns out for ya. How long would I have to wait to be eligible for vikings season tickets? Don’t talk to me or any true Packer about giving up. Those words do not exist in our vocabulary. We love our team high or low. We support our team high or low. You have just summed up the Vikings fan base with that last sentence pretender. Read any headlines about the possibility of the Packers being shipped off to LA or Toronto. don’t think so! Tell me pretender, who is responsible for the fact that your team is considering relocating to another state or country altogether? The answer is you the Vikings unfaithful! The franchise can survive a history of choking year after year but it cannot survive YOU!
    Sad but true!

    To RC IV
Who’s in whose head? Sorry my posts are not to the high standards set by you, Perv and Gravy, I’ll try harder!
I am very excited for Favre to come back. He’s already screwed with the heads of all his team mates in the locker room called many of them liars and made the organization look like beggars on the street corner not to mention bleeding them dry for additional funds. He can’t mess with Viking fan heads because for the most part they are empty. You’re probably the only fans that if you were to put in for season tickets, would have your choice of seats available between the 20 yard lines. My prediction is Favre goes down in flames this year with the rest of the franchise and you don’t get your 20,000 seat stadium with a real roof!
The talk of moving the franchise will not go away until the new stadium deal is done. Right now that looks like a big “if”. But hey, I did hear Al Franken predict a Super Bowl for you guys (what a comedian).
Yup, everything is tranquil in Queenland, Favre doesn’t know if he wants to hold his ball sack or a football, Peterson wants more money, Rice hasn’t practiced and Chilly is still trying to figure out how he had a huddle with 12 men in it? Meanwhile the Packers, Jets and the rest of the league split a gut laughing at this dysfunctional soap opera called As the Viking World Turns.
Good luck to you and your team sphincter boy, you’re going to need it!

  157. Steeler Fan in Germantown says: Aug 10, 2010 10:11 AM

As long as the Viking front office does nothing to draft / trade for a quality QB, Favre knows that he has them by the short hairs and he can demand anything and everything he wants.
Nobody in the Viking front-office had the smarts to go out in the off season and try to get a quality QB. Especially after the drama that he put them through last year, you would think that they would have learned a lesson.
Hell, Pittsburgh had Rothelisberger dangling on a string for the picking. He’s a perv, but a damn good QB. You just have to keep an eye on the young girls when he’s around.
The Vikings are getting what they deserve. It’s either pay-up, or have a terrible losing season. And Brett loves it.
I’d bet money that there will be some teams (especially one from Wisconsin) that will be aiming for his knees this year.
