A day after speculation surfaced that Vikings receiver Percy Harvin was missing practice because of migraine headaches, Vikings coach Brad Childress confirmed that the migraine problem that has long plagued Harvin has returned.
“It’s ongoing,” Childress said. “The only thing that would be wrong is if we quit trying to find things and throw our hands up in the air. It’s kind of an inexact science.”
Childress didn’t offer any details of Harvin’s migraines other than to confirm, “He’s had some.”
This is a serious concern for Harvin and the Vikings. Harvin has struggled with migraines for most of his life, they affected him for much of the 2009 season and caused him to miss a game, and in April Harvin said he was pessimistic that he’d ever be cured.
“I’ve talked to a lot of doctors,” Harvin said. “I don’t think there’s too much that can stop it.”
Harvin, who took some time away from the team after the death of his grandmother, has now missed nine days of training camp.
There is no cure for migraines. There are prescription pills you can take when you start to see the flashes, but those only make the migraine go away more quickly, it doesn’t prevent them…and that’s when the pills actually work. They’re a bitch, and they’ll never go away. The only thing he can do is eat healthy, stay in shape, and try to reduce his stress level…that’s about it.
We all know of one thing that MIGHT help with his migraines, but we also all know that it will never be legal.
I wonder if a little THC would help moderate those headaches. Oooops! The NFL continues to test for a non-performance enhancing drug.
I’ve suffered from what can only be described as ‘Migraines’ for a number of years… it got to the point I was getting 3 or 4 debilitating headaches a week. After trying everything I could I was eventually lead to cut Gluten (wheat) out of my diet and I’ve not had a headache in 4 months now. I’m sure they are looking into everything possible.. but to this day my own family Doctor says in his opinion that Migraines most likely don’t exist and that Gluten-Free is a fad. ..sigh.. Hopefully Percy and the Vikes are looking outside the box for help.
I haven’t taken a tylenol/aspirin/ibuprofen for headaches in years. When I discovered that THC actually seems to quell the pain (whereas the OTC meds basically just dull it) I saw no reason to continue using the others.
I don’t get headaches often like Harvin apparently does, but the twice a year or so that I do, it’s miserable if you only have conventional meds.
Has he ever missed any games due to migraines, or just practices?
Percy,
My man, I sure hope with all the resources that the Vikings have, they will be able to get a grasp on this. I have had 2 migraines in my life, and I cannot imagine having to deal with those on a regular basis. It is unreal.
Good luck , we absolutely need you to have a chance to make it to the Big show!
If ol’ Perc was prescribed marijuana to deal with his migraines would the NFL overlook it?
I don’t sugger migrained but I know I dont like headaches so this must be terrible. I hope he doesn’t suffer too many this season as he was instrumental last season. Go get ‘em Percy!
I bet Chilly wishes he could use the same old head ache excuse himself once BrINT Favre shows up in camp. Must be tough to sit down comfortably when you are somebody’s bitch 24/7.
I thought Harvin was in Mississippi chillin with Slingblade Favre. The Vikings should move their training camp there. They can all work out with High School kids. Heck, Favre’s buddy, Marc Chmura, might like that.
I’m VERY surprised that Percy is the first NFL player to suffer from regular migraines, honestly.
I’ve had them for over a decade now, and my dad has had them for 30+ years. They suck, and can be very debilitating.
Hope Percy can find a way to work through them; but as long as he produces on the field, not much to complain about him missing training camp
I suffered from migraines for years and found a cure that worked for me. Its called gutbrain therapy and it is a godsend.
The Migraines will disappear when Favre finally shows up during the 2nd half of the first gameof the season. He’ll then say (with a flourish of course), “I WAS ONLY ACTING!!!” Apologies to Jon Lovitz.

I wouldnt know but I guess I would have to ask you…whats it like being Bob Nelsons friend?
Put some Windex on it.
I can’t imagine studying a playbook then running around in 98 degree weather with just a regular headache.
I sure hope that he can get it under control. Fan bases (CheeseHead) aside, I hope he can get some help. The NFL medical staff should have the best resources for just about any ailment. Best of Luck!
I think it’s absolutely fantastic that a sports article about migraines erupts into so much positive medical marijuana banter.
In the grand scheme of things who cares what colored jersey you cheer for when there are so many obvious changes in the world we need to facilitate.
For once, I don’t even feel the need to get all negative on the Vikings fans…..today is a good day.
I remember Percy saying how much he liked McDonald’s. I trust someone with the Vikes has looked into his diet. MSG, gluten, GMO foods affect all of us some of us, more severly than others. Oh, and I forgot aspartame (diet soft drinks, gum) and high fructose corn syrup.
headaches do not = migraine. There is a huge difference. being a migraine sufferer since i was a teen i can understand why he can’t practice or play. Most people can’t carry out normal every day activities when they have a migraine; let alone play professional football. Its no joke when they say its an inexact science. you may respond to one treatment, then years later, your body gets used to it and you have to switch up the medication. The worst part about being a migraine sufferer is educating your place of employment, family and friends that its not “just a headache”. You ever get a head freeze from drinking a milk shake too fast.. imagine that ……for days. I feel for him.. i really do..
Jimmy Smith,
The Packers are the Vikings bitch. Must’ve sucked getting bitched slapped by them twice last year. More of the same this year, Smitty.
All fan bases aside, I hope that he can find someone to help him out with these. I have had episodes of extreme dizziness since I was 12 and not one doctor has been able to tell me what causes it or how to stop it. I just have to deal with it when it comes around like he does. I have lost jobs and relationships because of it.
have to admit, I’m pretty ignorant when it comes to understanding anything about migranes (why they happen, what they feel like, how long they last, etc.). all I can say is, I’ve been a Harvin fan since his days as a Gator. he’s a class act. I really hope it’s something that doesn’t derail a promising career. for the rest of you that suffer from them, I wish you the best, and pray that someone finds a solution/cure.
“We all know of one thing that MIGHT help with his migraines, but we also all know that it will never be legal.”
You seriously think he’s not smoking weed already? Child, please.
Jimmy give me a break. Green Bay owned Minnesota for like 15 out of the last 18 years. Minnesota finally wins the season series only becuase of Favre and you say they get owned like it has been for a decade.
Second, Percy Harvin got paid now he is slacking. FMLA punk bitch is all it is. I deal with them all the time in the auto industry.
Diagnosing and treating Harvin’s migraines will be an ongoing process. The doctors will have to work with him to find the triggers–they can be food-based or something else. Dehydration is my primary trigger, but other things can bring on the migraines, or even intensify them. Some triggers are easier to manage than others. Then, there is the treatment to alleviate the symptoms. There are prescription drugs, but some of them are opiate-based. I refuse to take any prescription medications for the migraines. The aspirin/acetaminophen/caffeine combination helps, but is not good for the liver. Ultimately, there is no cure, only management. There is also some new evidence that it is a genetic issue. I am glad to see that Childress has been educated about the problem.
I seriously doubt that Harvin is the first NFL player to suffer from migraines. I don’t doubt that the others kept it to themselves because they learned that headaches were considered an excuse for malingering.

He isn’t the first. I am sure there are at least a few, but Jim McMahon is the only other that comes to mind. I believe Tomlinson has a light sensitivity issue that causes them too, hence the black visor. At least his are somewhat preventable. Harvin clearly isn’t so fortunate.
This is just a terrible shame. I may not like his team at all whatsoever, but I really have to feel for Percy. Young kid, very talented, very promising future, at risk of losing it all due to a medical condition he couldn’t even prevent.
I only hope for his sake there is some way to alleviate this problem before it ends his career altogether. By all appearances, this guy has the tools to become one of the NFL’s elite. He deserves to at least have the chance.
Hey BK5931,
Vikings only won because of Brett Favre, really? He didn’t have anything to do with Aaron Rodgers being on his ass for both games. Unbelievable, what did he get sacked like 14 0r 15 times in two games. You, Jimmy Smith, and Bob Nelson are all dumbasses.
Percy, I’ve got your back, bro (even with a fairy-as$ name like “Percy”)…
Just help yourself to a few handfuls out of Bratt’s Vicodin stash…!!
(Of course, you have to wait until Bratt’s done unre-un-re-re-un-re-un-un-re-unre-retiring).
But otherwise–come on, Queen-beans, this is an easy fix!!
Next, Percy, just pay a visit to the Williams sisters and pick up some masking agents.
If you do get busted, go see our good (crooked)friend, the Honorable Judge Larson–he’ll help you out of the jam.
And if you’re STILL on the hook for it, we’ll have Stuart Smalley’s Office write a letter on your behalf.
One last thing–you weren’t hit in the head with a metal pole outside a night club by any chance, were ya?
Percy tested positive leading up to the combine…. those players (there was a record amount last year) are placed into stage 1 of the NFLs testing program.
from what i understand, stage 1 consists of a few counseling sessions… no suspension and random testing.
so its fair to say he hasnt smoked since the combine.
that said… its safe to say that its no coincidence the migraines became a bigger and bigger issue as his stress levels rose (NFL isnt an easy gig) and his “medication” was taken away from him.
BK5931, you are a moron. You are entitled to your opinions about football, but don’t demean someone over a medical condition of which you are ignorant.
What was Mork Chmura doing in the hot tub with a 16 year old girl? Somebody help me out.

Why do you even ponder posting?
He’s just Favre-ing it by sitting out the two a days in stifling heat while he “experiences” migraines. Now every player wants to sit out training camp ala the Queen.
(Just kidding). I hope Percy gets better. As a sufferer of migraines I have a lot of sympathy for him. It feels like your head is being crushed on all sides and your eyes are unfocused. When angry linebackers or headhunting safeties are on the opposite side, you don’t need your vision affected.
I don’t quite understand what all the bashing is on this site. The post had to do with a serious medical condition suffered by a NFL player. It does not matter whether he is a member of my team (GB) or one of our hated rivals. And yes, I am a stockholder, so GB is my team.
How did this post get into Fredo, Chmura, etc. and whether who owned who?
I will trade banter with anyone, but this post is not the place. I hope he gets better and can find some help. I hate the Viqueens, but that issue should be on another post.
He gets bad migraines. For his entire NFL career he will miss practices and games on occasion. It devalues him to an extent.
But he’s still a good player and was a big part of the Vikes success last season. Get well soon man.
Hopefully all of this media generated camp drama gives a false sense of security to Vikes opponents this season.

LOL!! Good callback!!! I wonder how many on here know what movie that was from….
A good day at McDonalds? Those cold shakes selling well?
Free wifi for everyone, even the employees…you know who you are..RC
Cheers to all those who are shouting down those who don’t take this seriously. I’ve played with a headache before, and that was bad enough…. And to top it off, I was a lineman. Those who were ironmen know what I’m talking about when I say that two minutes into the game your nervous system goes into overload and you don’t feel a thing until about an hour after the game gets done. But to only be on the field for a third of your team’s snaps…. And half the time you run a route away from the play and nobody touches you…. When he gets popped, it must feel like someone lit an M80 in his skull.
And I hope the league is taking this seriously…. By now everyone and their dog knows Harvin gets migraines. You think people aren’t going to be aiming for his helmet to try to get him off the field? I hope Mr. Goodell is taking this seriously and has a nice, severe punishment for the first person who intentionally strikes Harvin in the head.
I’m incredibly shocked there’s only one negative comment here, PFT users aren’t as bad a bunch as I thought they were.

I really don’t get all the hate for McKinnie. He may not look too impressive next to Hutch, but he’s still a better pure blocker than anyone on the Pack, Bears, or Lions line.
Other than that, the two knocks on him are for having sex on a boat (which we already determined nearly everyone on this site had done at least once–except Pervy of course), and using quick thinking and an improvised weapon to avoid getting trounced in a fight by a much larger man than himself (which you would be stupid NOT to do).
There are plenty of reasons to hate the Vikings. McKinnie doesn’t need to be one of them. He’s a decent guy and a very good player, one that you would be happy to have on your team.

Listen. I can’t have you calling me a racist every time I post anything on here. Not only is it completely wrong, it’s deeply offensive.
Apart from not even being all one race, I despise racism, in all of its forms, to the very core. Nearly every fight I’ve been in in my life was due to some Skinhead, Panther, or random ignorant fool taking exception to either my heritage or my taste in women. If you knew me, you wouldn’t dare accuse me of ANY form of discrimination.
So, I am going to do something I’ve never done before. I am going to admit you were right. It was very wrong of me to paint the entire Midwest with such a broad brush. If nothing else, I know better.
Everywhere in the world has some good people and some bad ones. Seattle and Milwaukee are not so different really. I still have a number of family members in WI, and they are certainly not of the “socially ignorant” persuasion. Again, that was wrong of me to say. Naturally, I don’t care if you like this apology or not, but it is my hope that maybe you can now come up with a more fitting label for me than the one thing in this life I truly disdain.
On to your other “points”:
I am not into conspiracy theories. As you well know, I am not the only one who feels the way I do about XL. Since it involves neither of our teams, there is really no need to discuss it. Agree to disagree.
I don’t “hate” Ted. I just dislike his methods. I actually think it’s great that a gay man can become a (somewhat) respected executive in the league. It shows how far we have come as a society. I simply don’t like what he has done with my team. I feel he lacks the courage to do what it takes to build a championship team in the modern era. You yourself have agreed with me on this. However, as a Pack fan, I also hope I’m wrong. A lot of analysts say we’re a contender this year. If that’s true, I’ll be ecstatic. I just want the Packers to get another title, I couldn’t care who gets us to that point.
Paul Allen’s call, or any other sports moment ever, has no real bearing on my life. Paul is an excellent announcer. Probably the best ‘local’ one in the country, and that makes him fun to listen to. High point in my life though? Hardly.
I have kids. THAT is what makes me truly happy. Everything else, especially football, is just filler. I’m not in any “sad state” whatsoever.
Now, that’s enough personal nonsense. Again, I couldn’t care if you like what I have to say or not. I don’t need your respect. I only ask that you get some new insults. This is still a football website, despite all appearances.

Rodgers wasn’t the ballcarrier after having fumbled, therefore the facemask penalty shouldn’t apply. I wasn’t happy about it, but it was the correct non-call, and I said so at the time. We didn’t deserve to win with that complete defensive meltdown anyway. It was humiliating.
Likewise, I don’t feel you should blame the refs for your loss either. The refs didn’t turn the ball over five times, they didn’t blow coverages, and they didn’t “ponder passing”. At most, they could have thrown some flags for roughing the passer, but since the game didn’t involve Tom “skirt” Brady, that’s debatable.
Fortunately for both of us, it’s a new season now.
Also, I am very familiar with Allen’s Nate Poole touchdown call. I probably could recite it even. It’s utterly hilarious.

Yep, you have me pegged.
Spot on.
Goodbye , cruel world!
GLUTEN! I had unexplained migraines…for quite a long time. No drugs could do the trick. When I went gluten-free, I immediately felt migraine relief. With a continued gluten-free diet for the past 10 months, I no longer suffer any headaches (or migraines!!), no stomach aches, and nearly no fatigue! Night and day difference. It is worth a try. And gluten intolerance often goes hand in hand with lactose intolerance (which I am as well), so I would suggest both! IT WORKS! It is not natural for humans to be able to digest or break down gluten…so how could anyone feel good?
