Contract situation could be slowing Sidney Rice's recovery

Another day, another quiet Minnesota Vikings minidrama to uncover.

In an article worth reading fully, Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune discusses the “elephant in the room” at Vikings training camp — Sidney Rice’s hip.

No one thinks Rice is faking the injury, but there is a growing feeling that Rice’s absence is partially due to his contract situation and “wounded pride.”  Rice is due $550,000 in the final year of his contract.  The Vikings didn’t even know about Rice’s injury until his new agent Drew Rosenhaus tweeted about the problem last month.

The Vikings would reportedly be willing to do an extension, but not the big-money deal Rice wants.  They want him to prove he’s a top-shelf wideout again.  There remains no timetable for Rice’s return.  (The same is true for Percy Harvin and that Favre guy.)

Whatever the disparate reasons, training camp work doesn’t seem like a huge priority for the core players of the Vikings offense.

  1. one year wonder this guy is not that good, but he is better then DHB so i guess pay the man

  2. What is wrong with players and their Money!!! Just get on the field and prove you deserve it! Last year you were great, this year who knows?
Everyday I read of some sports player wanting more money.

  3. Sorry, Sidney. You, Adrian and any other deserving Viking must wait until Lord Farvert is appeased, then you peasants can pick up the crumbs.

  4. thank god for the dependable Minnesota Golden Gophers football program or I would have no sports to look forward to this fall. 100 days without an arrest spells national championship.

  5. Makes you wonder if there is a single player/team contract that both sides are happy with…….why enter into a damn contract if it means nothing. It’s getting real old real fast…..owners are greedy but I can respect that more than I can respect the players who voluntarily enter into a contract only to be unhappy with it within a year.

  6. When he was a rookie and didn’t play, did he (or any player) offer to give their salary back……..his second year when he was injured the entire year, did he offer to give his salary back…..NO. No player does (I do remember back in the 1970’s a baseball player named Lyman Bostock offered his entire salary back to his team becuz he had such a disappointing year) but yet, let them have a good year and they expect that contract to be shredded and be paid the big buck$$$$$….Revis, CJ, Rice, etc. etc……let these players sit out and see how well they like making minimum wage, especially since the majority of them left college early to enter the NFL. I for one am sick of the players greed and constant whining. Perhaps a lockout is what they need to remind them just how good they have it.

  7. Yes, Rice is for real, everyone will see that for themselves this season. Of course it all depends if he has a QB that can get the ball to him.

  8. He just wants to get paid before he has crappy QB’s throwing to him in which his numbers and production will cut in half. Can’t say I blame the guy, without Bert Farve on that team, the Vikings are terrible…

How do you spell “schism” in Minnesota?
    F-A-R-V-E

The sad part is you really need the spelling help. You must be from Wisconsin….
    It’s spelled F-A-V-R-E you infidel.

  10. Berrian is terrible and overpaid, and I’m sure Rice would like to be equally compensated if not more. Rice wants more to be medicore after 1 year w/ Favre as his QB.
No doubt the Vikings will pay him.
I don’t think the Vikings core players need practice. They’ve already won the Super Bowl this year, so why bother?

  11. I agree with you MrHumble, the NFL shield should be a hologram with the words ‘Greed’ on the other side of the logo. I don’t feel bad for any of these guys – they signed the contract. Especially guys like Sidney Rice & Javon Walker back in the day who had 1 good season and now want their contracts torn up and redone.

  12. Oops, that should be “How do you spell schism in Minnesota?”
    F-A-V-R-A-H
    There, much better.

  13. The guy is only slated to make $550K this year, which is pretty damn low. Then again, he’s had only one good year, likely will need surgery this year, and we’ve got the collective bargaining crap going on, so it’s not exactly a convergence of fruitful contractual events coming together to mandate a deal. He should have had surgery, he’ll have a mediocre year (if he even plays), and the contract situation ain’t gonna improve,

Yup, with Gus Frerotte/Tavaris Jackson in 2008 the Vikes were just 10-6. As opposed to the 6-10 mark put up by Aaron Rodgers and the Packers….. But you’re right, the Vikings are much more dependant on Favre than the Packers ever were. *yawn*

  15. These players want the guaranteed money up front, to protect them from possible injury. Can’t blame them…. They wanted to be paid according to what they have done already, just in case. Because you know damn well that if they have a career ending injury before their current contract is up, the owners won’t be ponying up for an underpaid season or two…. Easy to fix. All contracts are fully guaranteed, but they cannot, under any circumstances, be ended before they expire. Put that in your CBA and smoke it…..

  16. Not a Viking fan (obvious from pro Saints posts) but Sidney Rice is the truth and should be paid like a top notch receiver. He should get to camp and both sides should work in earnest to pay the man.
It kills me when two business teams can’t sit down and hammer out something fair while the work continues (kind of like good faith). Sidney Rice is one injury away from never playing (as all players) – he is in the last year of his deal at a low base salary so he hs NO security at all. If Minny isn’t sure long term rip up the last year and give him a two year deal with big money in bonus and the second year being an option or something creative but you can’t have your best Wideout playing for peanuts with no future years or guarantees (see Javon Walker). Easy to see holding out in situations like this.

  17. “Berrian is terrible and overpaid”
Just because someone is overpaid doesnt make them terrible. When they offered the money what was he suppose to say? No? “Terrible” is a term used to describe the Hank Baskett’s and Dwayne Jarrett’s of the world. Berrian is far from terrible and your far from being a rational human being.

  18. This sounds like Javon Walker…sorta. Looking at the stats anyway…1 good year and now they want a big contract.

  19. @Brewdogg—And the 2010 Vikings will be 6-10 without Favre this year. You can’t honestly think the Queens will be a playoff team without the man, the myth, the waffler…

  20. Rice was injuried for his first two seasons and then performed well last year so I can understand why he would want a new contract, hell, they offered $7 million more to BrINT without him even asking.
But Viking fans beware of players with Rosenpussy as an agent, he tried to fool the Packers by hold Bigby out for a new contract and he is damaged goods as Rice may also be.
As for wounded pride, Rice just has to understand that Chilly isn’t going to wear his dress and knee pads for everybody. He is already servicing BrINT and Fumblefingers and pretending like he is real head coach, come on, there are only so many hours in a day.

  21. I do think Favre’s training camp ‘will he or won’t he’ antics, and the looming lockout, are two contributors to what you are seeing in the Vikes. Add in Jared Allen a player rep, and him being quoted as saying the owners *will* lockout…well, I would expect his words have some influence in Minny.
So Harvin, Rice and even Peterson appear to me to be just hoping to renegotiate right now (without actually yet saying so) in a passive aggressive attempt to get the money this year, just in case there is no next year. of course, like you guys, I am just blowing smoke…I don’t have any facts, its just my perception.
If everyone does come back healthy, and Brett plays, the Rice-Harvin-Berrian-Shiancoe receiving corps is still pretty good, and the DO have peterson in the backfield.
    Should be fun.

  22. Not defending Rice, but fans who bitch about players wanting more money are as myopic as they come. Would you work your job for half or a fifth of what the guy next to you makes, who does the same job? Would you let the owner of your company make BILLIONS off of you while you risked life and limb for their profits without asking for your market value?
No, you wouldn’t. But you don’t have the leverage to demand more money at your job, because you are a dumbass who wears an orange vest for a living and whines about how much pro athletes make…

  24. Bottom line,
Sid has a legit hip issue. I know people in the Vikings camp, and this is the 1st I have heard about a contract issue! This football. online version of the Enquirer is becoming a joke. 90% of what you guys post on here is total specualtion. The only shism that is going on is on these sites…….what a joke.
FYI, in the NFL, the contracts, if not a guaranteed contract, are subject to change at the owners will.
SHould a player receive a contract for 3 years and $15 Million, if the player gets cut, 4 months later, the player does not receive a penny. So it really makes sense for a player to get the money they deserve, that way if injury, or ownership become an issue, they are covered.

Agreed. On that note…that’s also the same problem you have in all of pro sports. Your word and your signature mean absolutely nothing. Look at the Revis situation. If he signs a renegotiated contract and then absolutely stinks this year and/or next….the Jets have no recourse other than to pay him high dollars, even if he sucks going forward after signing. This is why I think performance based contracts will be in place down the road….even for queen divas like Favre. I think Rice is damaged goods to a degree and don’t think the Vikes will pay up and surely won’t go long term. If Harvin also has issues, the MN offense would be in dire straits….maybe Lord BrINT is waiting for answers on his receiving corp.

  26. Rice’s injury is not helping his contract situation. Seriously. Think about it.
When healthy players want more money they hold out for more money. They don’t fake a lingering 6 month injury that won’t go away and might require season ending surgery.
Or did a source close to the situation potentially not imply otherwise?

  27. it sounds like what packer fans are basically saying if i may be allowed to paraphrase is “we hate that you get to have an owner that is willing to spend $$ to put a competitive team on the field but we’re stuck with a cheap and gay vampire who never signs free agents and we also hate that you have favre now and get to make playoff runs whereas since favre left the packers we have gone 17-15 with 0 division titles and 0 playoff wins and we obviously have no real prospects of beating the vikings, winning the division or winning a playoff game as long as we’re stuck with ted thompson and we don’t have favre, and also why do we have to live in wisconsin where we’re forced to consume gallons of gravy, become obese, sleep with our sheep and cousins, and drink heavily and tip cows over for our only amusement??? how is this fair????”

I would like to go on record as saying this person does not represent Viking fans as a whole…..

  29. Wow.
Missus Humble and Gravy are sooooo stupid. I mean, what a couple of idiots. But, I love it that they are what represents Queens fans.
Missus—-do you f’n realize that Favre is right now doing what you are b!tching about. He is holding out. If you think this is about the ankle, then you are dumber than I thought…..and that is really dumb. Sarah Palin dumb.
Gravy—-you’re a jacka$$ that doesn’t know what is about to hit him. The Pack finished 7-1 once they got their O-Line in order. The Queens stumbled down the stretch…..and your waffling, prima-donna ruined another season.
So nice to have a couple of dipsh!ts representing the Purple in style.
    Cheers Packer fans!

Sure.. But he’s terribly mediocre. And overpaid.

  31. Rice is definitely talented, he just needed a good QB to allow him to blossom. But I agree that FAVRE is definitely FUKKING up everything for the Vikings. If I were Childress I would pull a Packers and tell Favre to fukk right off and let Tarvaris be the starter. Yeah Tarvaris isn’t that great but they went 10 and 6 with him and at least HE IS THERE. This mindless Favre worship confounds me greatly.

  32. Who’s actually playing in Minnesota right now? Percy’s out, Favre’s out, Peterson’s out, Rice’s out… Is Greg Lewis there? Did they call up Michael Bennett?
    What a joke.

Ummm, no they didn’t. Tarvaris went 2-4 for the Vikes that season. Gus Frerotte won most of their games for them.

  35. This camp/preseason part of the year is eerily similar to last season when all the Vikes rivals were laughing it up about the media reports about this and that.
I guess the Vikes are a mediocre training camp and preseason team. Vegas still likes them and 22 returning starters should soften the blow of training camp stories.

  36. why do posts keep getting jacked? Who is in charge of what gets in and what gets kicked out? This site is starting to blow.

  37. They just need to throw some more money at these guys. We all know bruised ankles and injured hips heal faster when rubbed with millions of dollars. Favre’s proving that.
