Saban to NFL: You're no longer welcome

Last month, Alabama coach Nick Saban had an idea for dealing with the problem of agents who pay college football players.

Let’s just throw the NFL out,” Saban said.

Apparently, he has.

Multiple league source tell us that Saban has advised multiple (but perhaps not all) NFL teams that their scouts are not welcome on campus to view practices, until further notice.

There’s talk that Saban may open the doors on a limited basis.  Currently, August 18 has been identified as one of the potential dates.

It makes sense for Saban to provide some access to scouts, even if it’s limited.  At the end of the day, most of the kids he recruits want to play in the NFL.  But if NFL teams aren’t permitted to do their due diligence at to Saban’s players, it may be harder for them to get drafted.

And, it turn, it will become harder for Saban to recruit new players.

So Nick Saban has told the NFL that they are “no longer welcome”. I believe that the NFL has basically told Nick the same thing after his pack of lies while in Miami.

Really? You mean kids want to play for teams that are looked at by the NFL?

Yet this is the same dude who flat out lied about Andre ‘hubba bubba’ Smith to those same scouts. Yeah, I’m sure those same scouts are real upset about this one.

You forgot to mention if he does this his current players will not be able to get paid (illegally according the NCAA rules.) Which will also make it harder to recruit. Of course that is why he is doing this.

Gee, the poor NFL. They have no other way of finding out about these guys except by watching them practice? I don’t know Saban, am not a fan of him or Alabama, but think he’s got the right idea.

  15. Bradwins says: Aug 10, 2010 5:10 PM

This raises an interesting question: Does anyone know what, if any, mechanism is in place to prevent a college coach or program from only allowing access to a particular team?
I bring this up because Saban is known to have a good relationship with New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Could Saban close his practices and his program to all NFL teams but the Patriots? Could any NCAA football coach close their program to all but one NFL team? Could college programs align themselves with certain NFL teams and serve as a sort of pipeline? Obviously, teams could still draft whomever they liked, but the ability to gather a greater amount of information on players in programs to which teams had special access would certainly provide an incentive to draft players from that program. Likewise, a program that aligns itself with a marquee NFL program could gain an edge in recruiting.
The NCAA has rules against everything, so I’m sure they have a mechanism in place to prevent something like that from happening, but what is it? OK, Florio, you fancy yourself a reporter – get on it.

I knew he was an a-hole but I didn’t know he was an ignorant a-hole. Every D-1 player comes in with the knowledge that he could play in the NFL and that college is just a 3 year required stepping stone to that. When scouts are not welcome on campus, good luck getting that blue chip recruit who just wants to be there so the scouts can see him.

  25. Steve W. says: Aug 10, 2010 5:22 PM

Oh please. Will you Miami fans just get over it? Yes, he lied. Given the way to Dolphins were playing, however, how long would it have been before he was run out of town anyway? It’s not like he had them on the verge of a championship run and skipped town, nor was what he did even remotely as bad as what Petrino did. I’m not a Bama or Saban fan, but even I know that this was really the only thing he could do to get a response out of the NFL. It’s certainly not a perfect strategy, but he can only do so much to push the issue. Ideally, he’d do something that affected the NFLPA more (they license the agents), but this at least gets a lot of attention. The man turned Bama into national champs, and now has trouble with the NCAA because the program’s success has brought agents flocking to his campus. He had to do something.

Saban is kicking them out “for a period of time”. read: until their pre-season is almost done so they’re in prime position to defend their national title. hey, I’m a Gator fan. no love lost for Nick, but I applaud him for this move. one other poster made a good point though: kick out the AGENTS. the SCOUTS aren’t the ones to corrupt these kids, are they?

  35. JackDiesel says: Aug 10, 2010 5:57 PM

Then the NFL shouldn’t draft players from Alabama. Of course it won’t happen but it’s a 2 way street.
Saban’s a moron anyway, it’s the agents that are paying these college players, not NFL scouts. He’s taking out his anger at the wrong people.
Once the NFL draft goes to a slotted salary system this controversy will go away. Agents will stop caring about the college players because the money won’t be there like it used to be.

  36. dlmcc0909 says: Aug 10, 2010 6:03 PM

Why cant they just ban agents from the facilities and allow scounts in? Maybe they have ths policy in now I dont knpw. but you cant bar scounts for exactly the reason that these kids are there to showcase their talents for the NFL, not for the college team

And John Taylor, you really put a “twist” and slant on this story – good job I guess since that it what you guys on this site as well as PFT like to do. You could have just as easily had the headline read

  43. Football Fan says: Aug 10, 2010 6:34 PM

There are D2, D3, and NAIA players drafted these days. If there were 8 top 50 caliber players at Mount Union this year they would draw more scouts than Alabama would. These players need to just go where they want to go. The players dictate where the scouts go. If all the top players decided they want to play at the beach at Coastal Carolina and the Chants had 10 draft picks in one year then the NFL would definitely be at Myrtle Beach instead of Tuscaloosa.

Why is everybody bashing Saban over this? NFL agents are the ones that need the attention put on them.
Bama potentially got very f*cked over by a greedy agent or two, so how can anyone blame Saban for wanting to protect his program?
Oh yeah, it’s probably just a bunch of moronic Dolphins fans. Hint: no one gives a crap about the Dolphins or your ’72 season that wasn’t as good as the Pats’ ’07 season. You’re mediocre. Shut up.

  48. Bigdaddy237 says: Aug 10, 2010 6:51 PM

Most of you guys are very petty and small minded people. Scouts are already banned from Alabama’s campus. Saban is trying to use the only leverage he has to get the NFL to help police the agents.
As for you whiny ass Dolphins fans grow the hell up. Saban said exactly what he should have said to be fair to his team. If he had come straight out and said he was leaving the team would have quit. Also Saban did not agree to come to Alabama until after the season was over.
As to the other mouth breather comparing NCAA coaches to agents; you really need to study the system better. Coaches recruit players by trying to sell the on the school and how it can give them a future. Agents try to buy players and generally do not care about any of these kids.
Saban is no saint, but he genuinely cares about his team. If you do not believe that just checkout his graduation rate.

Yeah, and the tooth fairy is real too. If there’s a highly touted player on the Crimson Tide, I guarantee you that he’ll be drafted in the first or second round. Oh, and guess what, you don’t make the personnel decisions for the Steelers or any other team in the league. So, rant all you want, it doesn’t change a single thing. As for coaching in the NFL, why would Saban want to. The man pretty much owns the college scene, and college coaches can get paid as much as pro coaches.

Whenever Saban stays at 1 school for 10 years or even sniffs 300 wins, talk then about owning college football!

But I applaud him for making a statement. This isnt against the NFL, or even respectable agents…..this is about the slimeballs, which there are many of out there.
