With Cromartie, Wilson, Ryan says Jets "have everything we need"

Jets coach Rex Ryan is starting to change his tune about holdout cornerback Darrelle Revis.

A week ago Ryan was giving Revis ammunition in his holdout, talking about how much the Jets would miss “the best corner in the league.” But today Ryan said the Jets are just fine at cornerback even without Revis, thanks to the addition of veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie and first-round draft pick Kyle Wilson.

“Don’t feel sorry for us,” Ryan said. “We have everything we need here on defense. The addition of Cromartie was enormous for this football team. And the fact that we drafted Kyle Wilson, who’s an outstanding player. That helps us a great deal.”

Ryan’s comments seem to be part of a concerted effort by the Jets’ brass to let Revis know they can live without him. Both sides appear to be digging in, and Ryan appears to be planning to coach a defense that is missing its best player.

“Right now, I’m just going to focus on the people that are here,” Ryan said. “My mindset has to be on these guys that are here right now. Those are the guys that are going to play.”

WTF! Just shut up Rex. Geez.
You started all of this by calling him the best in the league. Dumbass.

  2. nagurski_T_form says: Aug 10, 2010 3:22 PM

    Something Revis hasn’t thought of:
What if Kyle Wilson turns out to be GOOD?
There is a good chance he turns into a shutdown corner and he might even make Revis expendable.
If Wilson comes in and plays well, then Revis is screwed. I guarantee his agent hasn’t thought of this.

As a Patriots fan I should be happy about this hold out. However, this has to suck for Jet fans. We are going thru the same with Mankins and its demoralizing for players intregal to a teams superbowl asperations to sit out because of money. Hold outs may not alienate fans, but they are not good for the league….especially in this economic climate. If i were a member of the Jets, I would be outraged that the best player and best chance to make the SB is griping about $

  7. ampats says: Aug 10, 2010 3:28 PM

    Tick,tick,tick.
Cromartie is a nickel back at best who cant tackle, and Wilson is a rookie.
Spin it any way you want, the Jets are missing the best player on that team.

  8. MrHumble says: Aug 10, 2010 3:30 PM

What a tool Rex is….but jets fans will continue to drink his kool-aid. Last week it was “Revis is the best football player ever, he is the foundation of this team and his play on the field makes him the team leader that everyone is more than happy to rally around”…….fast forward one week….”we have everything we need”……….ya sure do rex, all that remains is for the start of the season (lighting of the fuse) and by mid-season it will be a hellva implosion.

Revis is a POS, plain and simple. The guy thinks he is worth more than Peyton Manning and Tom Brady? Give me a break. The NFLPA has WAY too much power. Where else can you not come to work for the sole purpose of demanding more money besides professional sports?
This isn’t a strike where all workers sit out because of unfair treatment, Revis is just a crybaby bitch and Rex Ryan deserves all of this.

  12. maniacman says: Aug 10, 2010 3:36 PM

What may go against Revis is that the offense has improved and thus the defense may not have to be on the field as much as it did last year. However bottom line is that Revis wants as much money he can get and Woody doesn’t want to be held hostage. Unfortunately, its the fans that lose out.

  13. JetReaper says: Aug 10, 2010 3:38 PM

    ——————————————-
Yeah, a rare though-out post at PFT.. Instead of the regular rival bickering BS.
When players start holding out with 3 years left on deals, It’s eventually going to suck for any fan of a team with a Great player…
I have a feeling Revis’ agents are going to be blackballed throughout the league because this is ridiculous and no team wants to go through the Hold out the Jets went through after the draft and then THIS AGAIN, just 3 years later…
Really what do these agents care – they might as well sign Revis for whatever for this year and then they can hold out next year for more – Contracts and T E A M mean nothing… This is ALL “Team Mevis”.
Shocking these same agents rep Vincent Jackson.. .Maybe Jackosn and Revis can hang out all season and sip coctails while their short careers get shorter.

  14. BigMikeSkinsFan says: Aug 10, 2010 3:40 PM

anyone who watched cromartie his last year in SD knows the guy has problems with his hips and is NOT shutdown.

  15. Testify says: Aug 10, 2010 3:42 PM

  17. hnirobert says: Aug 10, 2010 3:45 PM

I like Kyle Wilson, but he’s a rookie. The best thing for him will be to look up to Revis and not Cromartie. There’s a BIG drop off in terms of ability as a Corner as well as leadership ability when comparing Revis and Cromartie. Terrible week to be a NY sports fan.

  18. MEDTXPACK says: Aug 10, 2010 3:53 PM

Ryan says the Jets would MISS him. Thats different than saying we NEED him. Any team would MISS the best corner in the league, and i think thats ok for a head coach to say. He walked the line but his fat ass was able no to slip up and say we NEED him, because as he said, they dont. They just MISS him.
Overall though, i am glad that the NY football scene is getting some fun stuff to talk about rather than look at Tom Coughlins stupid face and listen to their speech hindered (Michael Phleps is my besf friend) QB, Eli Manning.

  19. johnny1979 says: Aug 10, 2010 3:55 PM

Rex may not be blessed with a silver tongue, and he may run his mouth longer than he should, but the guy can coach defense. Rex has always been a major reason why the Ravens defense was so good from 2000 – 2008. I trust Rex a hell of a lot more than any other coach in the AFC East. Belichick is starting to fade, and the other coaches in the AFC East are not even worth a damn to mention.

this site hates the Jets and so do many others. The truth is the Jets are probably the most talented team in the NFL.

  24. Cannon says: Aug 10, 2010 4:01 PM

They are still a playoff team without Revis but they need him to win it all this year as he is the leader of that defense

  25. godofwine says: Aug 10, 2010 4:03 PM

Revis must be careful and not pull a Brady Quinn “Now I’m done” and overplay his hand. I know he fears a Leon Washington situation, but the situation could go bad and not in his favor. Would Dallas have caved in 1993 when Emmitt held out if they hadn’t lost those first two games? As Florio said earlier, if the Jets dominate the first few games then his leverage may be gone.

  26. Cannon says: Aug 10, 2010 4:05 PM

  27. Champ Daily says: Aug 10, 2010 4:11 PM

I hate how the writers on this site always twist everybody’s words around…When did Rex say Revis wasn’t the best DB anymore…All he said was that even without, they still had enough in the sceondary to win it all.
You might not agree with that statement, but at the same time, he still never reversed his origianl statement.
And all the Dolphins fans…It seems like more of you post on the Jet news, than on your own team. Its too funny…You all wish Rex was the guy coaching your team. Rex has the best defensive mind in the sport, and you would love his boastful attitude if he was your coach.
PS- Doesn’t Sporano look and sound like a high school janitor…He’s just missing the keys!!!!!!!!

  28. purplepuzzyeatrz says: Aug 10, 2010 4:12 PM

You guys fumbled this one big time. He is in fact a guy that can shut down half the field. I dont care what you say and how you spin it. THis guy is unstoppable, and no matter what. You are going to miss him big time. If you can take out the top receiver on the opposing side. You can scheme all over the place.
This wll have a much bigger affect than they think. I dont care how you do it. Figure out a pay plan to get him on the field. I am a Vikings fan, so I really dont care. But it would be fun to see how good this Defense could really be……..

Screw the agents, and their greedy clients.

Nobody nationally knew revis’s name before he excelled in rex’s defense. No corner deserves $15 mil/yr, period. If you ever ran a business u understand you don’t overpay for something that is not needed to win a championship!!!!!
A QB is needed & we still don’t know if Sanchez can get the job done. But you have to admired his work ethic!
The Jets have an excellent team on paper & a excellent coach to lead the team. Does this mean they are going to win the SB, No.
However if they stay healthy they have excellent chance to win the AFC east & make some noise in a playoff run.

  35. Nevisyakker says: Aug 10, 2010 4:36 PM

Perhaps Wilson will learn the game from Cromartie, you know…like playing with courage and how to tackle.
Ryan goes from “He’s the best defensive player in the NFL” to “nah, we’re fine with what we’ve got, we don’t need him.” What do you suppose he would say if one of those two gets an ACL injury in the pre-season. Nah, we’re OK, we don’t need the best defensive back on the planet!”

  54. SF Saints Fan says: Aug 10, 2010 6:09 PM

Rex Ryan helped create the “monster” that is Darrelle Revis. He did this by pumping up his greatness to the media and, more importantly, by having his team play a defense that put pressure on the QB from multiple directions helping to force QB’s to throw bad passes. Don’t get me wrong, Revis is a very good player, but he is a much better player because he plays in a defensive scheme that puts enormous pressure on the QB. If Revis holds out for the year, it would not surprise me if one or both of the Jets CB’s have great years without him in the backfield.
Rex Ryan helped create Revis Island and he is now hoping that he gets his sandy beotch back.

SOME FANS – You truly have no idea about football, or probably life. For a rookie head coach, Rex did a pretty damn good job. He was a half away from the Super Bowl with a dominating defense and ground game, and I forgot to mention a rookie QB. With the NFL a “passing league,” he did it his way. Why can you not give the guy his due? Because he’s over-weight? Because he says stupid things? He knows how to coach football, and the players play hard for him.

Belicheat is a genius, but his ego is starting to get the best of him.

The can be labeled that they are making a one year run or trying to buy a super bowl, but that is how they’re doing it. Many teams around the league would like to have the Jets’ problems, minus the whole Revis thing.
Until the real season starts, STFU
