Andy Reid doesn't want McNabb Redskins jerseys at his training camp

Eagles coach Andy Reid noticed something rather distasteful out of the corner of his eye this morning: A Donovan McNabb Redskins jersey.

According to Tim McManus of Philadelphia Sports Daily, a fan named Jim Devlin was asked to take the jersey off by security.  He did so quickly, and the security guard reportedly cited Reid as the reason he had to remove it.  Devlin wasn’t kicked out practice.

The fan also wore the jersey to a Phillies game the other night to “make a statement” about the Eagles trade and get a reaction from people.

So yeah, Devlin is about as big a jackass as you’d expect.

The guy wasn’t just a fan in the stands. He was credentialed to walk on the sideline and they ask people who get those passes not to wear other teams jerseys. That’s a reasonable and yes the guy seems to be a lame attention seeker.

  3. RedGoneWILD says: Aug 11, 2010 10:11 AM

So wait…the Eagles trade their best QB since Cunningham for a 2nd round pick to a division rival so they can start Kolb, a guy who has started all of 2 NFL games in his career…
and this guy wearing McNabbs new jersey is the jackass?
    Rosenthal, your opinions suck!

im suprised Andy Reid could turn his fat burrito neck that far to even notice the guy ..cry baby !!
go COWBOYS sweep the Eagles again !! yeeeee

  9. mgrammo says: Aug 11, 2010 10:14 AM

douche bag eagle and cowboy fans come to redskin games all the time wearing their old faded Terrell Owens jerseys. I love it when the skins aren’t even playing one of those teams. It’s like what is the point??

  14. footballisfun says: Aug 11, 2010 10:15 AM

I don’t think that’s necessarily being a big jackass. He was probably a huge McNabb fan while cheering for the Eagles over the past decade plus and is just upset with how the team handled the situation.
A jackass would have refused to take off the jersey, shouted about he has freedoms in America and been a general disruption until being forced out of the practice area.
If the Eagles believe in Kolb, if they believe in their decision they should be the ones laughing at Devlin and make it clear they’re going to beat the Redskins.

  15. Booniemonster says: Aug 11, 2010 10:15 AM

  16. HarrisonHits says: Aug 11, 2010 10:16 AM

  17. Johnabis says: Aug 11, 2010 10:16 AM

I was upset when the eagles traded Mcnabb and wish he had one more year and all but I AM AN EAGLES FAN, not a fan of a player.
If you all of a sudden become a redskins fan because your favorite player was traded then you were never a real fan in the first place

  18. Real Vikings fans wouldn't cheer for Favre says: Aug 11, 2010 10:17 AM

Andy Reid realizes his mistake already and couldn’t hold back the frustration.
Eagles 4-12 this year. Next time you get a franchse QB, which may take a decade, appreciate him a little more.

  19. ImJustSaying says: Aug 11, 2010 10:18 AM

Gregg…you sir are the jackass for pointing the finger at a fan that obviously does want to make a statement that is every bit his 1st amendment right to do so.
I applaud him for doing what he did. Trading Donovan, and turning your back on the QB that made the Eagles who they were during his tenure, to a divisional team was an insult.
IMHO, Donovan McNabb is a leader who was thrown out and not shown the loyalty he gave to his team. So KUDDOS in my book to Jim Devlin. By having security to ask him to remove his jersey was petty, weak, and down right childish.
Good for him for making a statement. Is Coach Reid’s skin so thin he could not take it? This is the NFL not “Seasame Street” where everything has to be “A-OK”. Grow a pair!

  20. Mr Krinkle says: Aug 11, 2010 10:18 AM

I’m not sure why you consider this guy a jackass? He was asked to take off the jersey and he “quickly did.” Then he was kicked out…. seems odd. The guy was a fan of someone that had great success with the Eagles organization and didnt like how things were handled. This is coming from a guy that hates seeing Brett Favre Minnesota Vikings jerseys at Lambeau. Although I think the people look like tools in purple, I would never call them jackasses because they are a fan of a player

  33. Philly Cheese says: Aug 11, 2010 10:23 AM

I don’t see how they can make the guy take the jersey off. Do football teams now have legal authority over the freedom of speech or did they draft their own constitution for their practice fields? Either way, the guy does sound like a tool and probably posts here as BigMikeSkinsFan.

  34. AlphaQ2 says: Aug 11, 2010 10:24 AM

No, he’s a jackass because he claims to be an Eagles fan but bought a Redskins jersey. Plus, he was wearing it on the sidelines because he had a field pass. He was not in the stands. It’s the right move by the Eagles.

  37. billsfan66 says: Aug 11, 2010 10:25 AM

What’s the difference if he was wearing a Tom Brady jersey? Bet Reid wouldn’t have him take it off then.
The Eagles traded McNabb against his will. It’s not like he forced them to do it.
Grow up Reid. What’s next? Stopping all the fans at games who do it?

  38. DonTerrelli says: Aug 11, 2010 10:27 AM

  41. Richm2256 says: Aug 11, 2010 10:27 AM

    1) Yes, the guy is an instigating, attention-grabbing douche…..
    2) He has every right to wear whatever the hell jersey he wants, credentialed or not (and just how did this moron GET credentialed by the Eagles in the first place?)
    3) Andy Reid is a moron for making this an issue. He traded McNabb, in essence washing his hands of the guy. Why should he care that a dumbass fan is wearing McNabb’s latest gear? If Reid is right, Eagles fans will be praising Kolb to the Football Gods this season anyway. Right?
There are nothing BUT morons in this non-story.
Then again, it involves the Iggles and Philly fans, a recipe for idiocy.

  42. Dayton Dolfan says: Aug 11, 2010 10:27 AM

  45. Staubach_Aikman_? says: Aug 11, 2010 10:29 AM

I would have let him wear it. If you are going to make a decision, live with it. The eagles traded their best QB in the superbowl era to a division rival. If the decision was the right one, the proof will be evident during the season, and everyone will remember him being a chucklehead. If Kolb falls on his face, and McNabb has even passable numbers, I imagine there will be a lot of eagles fans where redskins jerseys.
The better question is, he’s an eagles fan, what do you expect? They boo Santa Claus.

  46. jamesf240 says: Aug 11, 2010 10:30 AM

If Andy had picked out a guy in the stands (as opposed to someone allowed on the practice field) I’d have an issue.
So, I’d bet that headline a lie. He isn’t banning McNabb/Redskin jerseys from training camp, just from the field where they could be a distraction form the work going on.

As for whether he should take off the jersey…
You should see the reaction someone got for wearing a Rapistburger jersey to Training Camp on July 31st. There wasn’t a fight, but he was booed and harassed constantly by fans in the stands.

  54. Gallagher says: Aug 11, 2010 10:35 AM

And @mgrammo, who are you to worry about opposing fans at FedEx (the Eagles’ home away from home)? I am there every year for the Eagles game, and our fans put your fans to shame. The worst thing about the skins, second to their owner of course, is their rediculous excuse for fans. Go back to watching soccer, and let the real fans enjoy our football. Since when does it matter what someone wears anyways? Can’t we be a fan of a player and a team? I doubt anyone is complaining about someone wearing a #4 Viking jersey at a GB practice. There’s more important things to worry about here….

  61. mad555 says: Aug 11, 2010 10:43 AM

If they had just ignored it, the “nudge” would have nothing to “nudge” with and it would be a non-issue. Usually the Eagles front office makes good decisions, but this is not one of them.

We may have been the target of a lot of jokes and the Redskins have earned that distinction…but at least we’re going to respect fans and their choice of team (or player, in this case) affiliation.
And yet you call him a jackass. He took the jersey off when asked.
I got one for you…why don’t you write a post about the fans at games that wear basketball or soccer jerseys. At your thought level, that should be even more egregious of a slight.

  78. HornedHelmet says: Aug 11, 2010 10:57 AM

  80. east96street. says: Aug 11, 2010 11:00 AM

Did McNabb force a trade? No. Did McNabb bad mouth the team and organization? No. Has Reid been adamant that the right move was made? Yes. Has the organization been adamant that the trade was a fair one? Yes. Have the players announced to the press they supported the trade and it was time to let Kolb play? Yes. So, why is Reid upset and how is it a distraction? McNabb has been the perfect gentleman and the Eagles claim to be pleased with the change. Honestly, if McNabb manages to beats Philly behind that paper mache O line they have in Washington, with their million year old RB lineup, and those sorry ass WRs, everyone connected to the trade should be fired on the spot. The only thing McNabb has going for him in DC is the defense and, unfortunately for Donovan, Fat Al doesn’t catch passes.

How can you call Devlin a jackass? He has every right to wear what every jersey he wants. Reid and the organization made the decision to trade McNabb now they need to man up and take the criticism that comes with it. To make matters worse, they traded him to a division rival which basically slaps all of the faces of the McNabb Eagle fans. I hope the Skins beat them the Eagles twice this year.

  85. PFTiswhatitis says: Aug 11, 2010 11:08 AM

Gotta agree with the other posters Gregg. He is hardly a jackass for wearing what he wants in the stands regardless of his motives.
Now if he was on the sidelines with a pass, that is different story.

To all the posters on here talking about his first amendment rights ….. Maybe you should read the first amendment.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”
Where exactly does it say that a PRIVATE PARTY cannot control someone else’s expression on PRIVATE PROPERTY?
First Amendment only applies to the Government. Last I checked the Eagles were not a Government entity.
Its the same reason Florio can delete, remove, and otherwise mess with comments on this site.

Fifth, a true Eagles fan should have some respect and show support to our new QB.

I am a die hard Redskins fan. I cannot stand immature (keep our self proclaimed bad rep going) Eagles fans. That being said though I think they had the right to tell this guy to take the jersey off.
This is not a freedom of speech issue it’s immature behavior and an obvious distraction. It’s one thing to wear it during a game in a very public forum, but when a team grants you a sideline pass you had better be respectful. If I were the Eagles I would have told him to leave the field immediately. Something to be said about respect. Am I the only person on here who is under the age of 30 and thinks this dude is a punk for wearing the jersey?
I have had a sideline pass to a Redskins game and walked right by Dan Snyder. At the time I could not stand the guy but if I told him to his face he was an ass I would have expected to be removed. Just go enjoy yourself and save the fighting for the parking lots where it belongs…

The division accounts for 40% of all NFC champions and 25% of all Super Bowl champions. The Eagles are the only member of the division without a Super Bowl victory. They are the franchise equivalent of the Manning brother who can’t play quarterback.

He never won the big one and he ran the same offense for 11 years so I think it was time for a change. Kolb has a lot of potential and a lot of young weapons that he can be teamed up with for years to come. Its funny because these same haters are the same people that have been saying McNabb and the Eagles suck. Now that we traded him, all of the sudden McNabb is this great QB that we’ll greatly miss. Hate on HATERS, hate on. Give Kolb a chance before you run your mouths. 3,500+ yards for Kolb this season. 25-30 TD’s. I think he’ll have some big stats this season. I know he’ll make some BIG mistakes as well, but what QB doesnt?

  127. Harold of the Rocks says: Aug 11, 2010 12:45 PM

Well, at least the Cowboys fan knows the deal. Can you imagine what Jerry Jones would think seeing an Eagles/Giants/Redskins jersey on his sideline? This just in: No other head coach (or owner) would have done anything differently to a person on the sidelines.
Donovan McNabb didn’t want to leave Philly. He said it constantly, “I want to retire in an Eagles uniform.” For anyone who thinks Eagles fans will get accosted for wearing a DM Redskins jersey, you’re crazy.
During week 11, when the Eagles are 4-7, the stands will be LOADED with DM Redskins jerseys, all worn by Eagles fans expressing their displeasure with the trade.
I’m an Eagles fan who thinks Kevin Kolb is not the future of the team. McNabb’s legs are made of glass, and his aim was a bit too low. It was time for him to go. I wish him well during the first 2 games he remains uninjured (the only 2 games he’ll play all year). That said, we’re going to have our own QB blues this season too.

How many superbowls has the eagles won? Skins fans know nothing about football? That comment alone speaks to your intelligence level. DC is football and the tradition there can be compared with that of the packers, steelers, raiders and other proud franchises. All Super Bowl Winning Teams. The difference is we don’t turn on our own team year after year. He is the only QB to have won as much as he has in the history of the eagles and you are going to make the statement that Redskins fans should watch soccer? How about knowing enough about football to know that Donovan stats and winning percentages are up there with the like of P Manning and T BRady you ignorant fool. We know enough to appreciate what a QB like DMac brings to the table. Cannot wait to see the Eagles choke yet again. BTW I am a Redskins Fan who knows enough about football to know that the Eagles have never won a Super Bowl. Yes they did win championships in 1948, 1949, and 1960. Oh but wait that was over 50 years ago and they were super bowls. Your own fans admit you are the most 2 faced, back stabbing, unloyal fans in the league. If a stripper had been on the field wearing a string bikini, Reid probably would’ve had security ask her to put some clothes on. If someone had wrapped themselves in aluminum foil, and it was creating bright glares in the players’ eyes, he would’ve had that person take off the foil. Anything that is a potential distraction from the task at hand (which is getting the players ready for a season of professional football) should be remedied by the staff. Reid did the right thing, and it’s been blown out of proportion. It’s a non-story.

What do you do in the dozens upon dozens of, by your own standards, POINTLESS years? (e.g. those years where your beloved ‘Skins accomplish ANY THING less than winning the SB) I mean, why would a Redskins fan even watch continue watching games if they are going to result in nothing but disappointment all but three times?
One could say that “The times we DID win, makes all the losing worth the torture.” Or “We polish our trophies!” or “Revel in our past glory days!” But, why not skip watching the games from week to week, wait to see if your team wins it all and only then, buy the DVD of the season so your time and attention is worth something?
It’s a shame that one might disregard the Eagles’ role in the 99-09 span as simply a spoiler, mostly eating up the top or wildcard spot in the playoffs, keeping the other 3 NFC East teams from having, as you define it, any type of successful season. I saw a lot of great Eagles games in that decade.

Hey David LeFebvre – I don’t know what Andy does with a stripper in a bikini, but I would fear for the fan in the aluminum foil. Andy would probably ask for some hot sauce and another Coke as he devoured the fan on the sideline. Hail!

Andy Reid is the JACKASS!! If I were Devlin, I would sue the SH-T out of the Eagles and or Andy Reid. What does it say on that piece of paper, you know that thing called the constitution of independence? What right does Reid have to tell someone what they can or can’t wear? I think Devlin is the man. Somebody finaly had the balls to speak up about the giant mistake made by Philly.
    WOW!!! Constitution of Independence?!?……Just……WOW!!

Musta struck one helluva nerve. Eagle fans beware. The big guy (Reid) is scared shitless. Just wait til McNabb wears his Redskins jersey into Philly. Maybe Andy will wish he could force McNabb to take it off also!

  153. 2DawkinsWillEatYou0 says: Aug 11, 2010 3:17 PM

why would any coach or player from the nfc east that doesnt play for the redskins want the see a redskins jersey at their training camp? in 2 years, Kolb jerseys will outnumber McNabb jerseys anyway.

mcat13 wrote: IDIOTS! He was on the team SIDELINES. Stop talking about free speech. You think Urban Meyer would let a guy wear an Alabama jersey on his sideline. If he was in the stands no one would care***************
Actually, the guy was at a free training camp practice. He wasn’t on the sideline of a game. Last I checked, there is no dress code for training camp practices for fans. So, what was that about IDIOTS?
Man, if Reid worried half as much about his weight and his kids as he does about what people wear to his practices, he would be much better off.

  155. Mooch says: Aug 11, 2010 3:39 PM

COWBOYSBEEF, have you seen your coach lately?? I’ve heard MANY cowboy fans refer to their own coach as “coach cupcake”. LOL. Yeah Andy is fat, but so is Wade Phillips! And what the hell has Wade ever accomplised?? And judging by Wades soft, puffy lil fat ass, I bet Andy could whoop his ass!!

  157. .Vox Veritas. says: Aug 11, 2010 4:44 PM

“COWBOYSBEEF, have you seen your coach lately?”
You mean the one that’s 5-2 against Andy Reid?
“Yeah Andy is fat, but so is Wade Phillips!”
Wade Phillips could fit in Andy Reid’s belly.
“And what the hell has Wade ever accomplised??”
    34-14?
” And judging by Wades soft, puffy lil fat ass, I bet Andy could whoop his ass!!”
Andy would have a heart attack just thinking about it.

  158. dabehr says: Aug 11, 2010 4:54 PM

Tell Andy Reid to get over it.
McNabb has his fans, and it’s a legitimate statement to make if you’re an Eagles/McNabb fan.
You don’t need to be an Eagles or McNabb fan to know the guy has a freedom of speech…even with a shirt.

  159. AzHawk says: Aug 11, 2010 4:58 PM

Buddha……..Of course I’m really trying to say Reid is against America…..Its a perfect example of massive over reaction……just like Reids reaction to a guy wearing a Skins
And really…I’m an idiot for supporting the men and women that serve this country. If that makes me an idiot then I will gleefully accept that label.

  161. CTEagle says: Aug 11, 2010 6:06 PM

If the guy was in the general viewing area, I doubt he would have been asked to change jerseys. He had sideline passes given by the Eagles. With these passes comes an understanding that you don’t make the Eagles organization look bad as your standing on the sidelines. As I understand it, it is the case with most teams. I once went to a Jets pre-season game vs the Eagles, and we were given sideline passes for the pre-game warmups. I was asked (by the guy that brought me….Jets gave him the tickets) not to wear anything disrespectful to the Jets organization, so I didn’t wear any Eagle hats, shirts etc…figured it was the least I could do…they gave him the tickets.
I read that the guy was wearing a red Kolb practice jersey in the afternoon session….I’m sure the organization gave it to him in appreciation of his removal of the Redskins McNabb jersey.

  162. kdip says: Aug 11, 2010 7:34 PM

I am a 25 year season ticket holder for the Eagles and have every intention of wearing my Donovan McNabb jersey to the game. I also intend to stand and cheer for Donovan if he does well and YES I even hope he wins a super bowl before the Eagles. I encourage fans from opposing teams to where there teams jersey with pride and sit with us. Not everyone is a jerk and if the Philly fan is with them, there really isn’t a reason to worry about it. On a different note, Is there a Philly superstar that can actually end his career here without being traded ……..Barkley, White, Iverson, McNabb. Whatever I am tired of it all and YES I support Donovan and wish him nothing but the best. I am an Eagles fan but I plan to wear my Donovan jersey to the Redskins game, I can’t really show support for him any other way. It’s a jersey – just get over it.

  163. ReMARKable4Real says: Aug 11, 2010 7:52 PM

the guy who wrote this article is a jackass, the last i heard this was a free country and if the guy wanted to wear a mcnabb redskins jersey its his right. if fat ass andy is so bothered by it why did he trade mcnabb? or was he trying not to hurt kolbs feelings? either way, the hell with reid and rosenthal. fyi hears @greggrosenthal twitter account

  164. stanjam says: Aug 11, 2010 11:04 PM

Some people really need to read up on rights. This man did NOT have the right to wear whatever he wanted. This was NOT a public area where free speech rules apply. He was granted access to be there. Therefore that access can be controlled by the Eagles in pretty much any manner they want. For that matter the same goes for those tickets you buy to the stadium. While they tend to be pretty lax about what you can and can not wear or say, there are definite limits that go beyond the laws of free speech because those laws do NOT APPLY there! You have been granted access to a stadium owned by someone else, and if they do not like what you are saying, they can remove that right.

Been following the Eagles for49 years. Trading McNabb, and trading him in the division, is THE singularly stupidest thing I have ever seen them do. Bear in mind I watched them let Reggie White go so I am setting the bar very high! Like another fan said, when they are losing, you are going to see LOTS of Donovan’s Redskins jerseys all around Philadelphia. It is a form of fan protest to let the Eagles’ management know that they REALLY screwed up again. The Eagles have the right to remove those fans off of the sidelines if they wish, but, they end up looking like the thin skinned jackasses here…

As a Steelers fan living in Baltimore wearing her Steelers jersey at work (because it’s the Friday before a game day), I have to say you can wear any jersey you want anywhere you want to wear it–whether you’re a jackass or not.
However, you have to put up with the consequences of wearing it–whether it’s being teased (like what’s happening to me today) or having your life threatened (like what would happen if you wore an opposing team’s jersey in Philly)

Curtains? Why? Because your franchise has been a LAUGHINGSTOCK of the NFC since Mel the Midget bought them?
Why not talk shit? Because ALL SKINS FANS DO IS TALK SHIT. They have no other recourse but just talk a good game after watching an abortion of ANOTHER double digit loss season.
Do you think it’s pure coincidence that the playoff years for the SkinFlints since ’99 were because Philadelphia had rare “down” years? Look it up, halfwit.
You can HAVE Low Throw McBlow. The non-nitwit ( obviously this idiot Devlin is excluded) fanbase saw all they needed to the last two weeks of the year. Good luck with that.
Let’s chalk this up on the board, shall we? You actually think LTM is going to have a better year with the cast of Cocoon at RB, a WR corps littered with underachievement and past it’s prime performance, not to mention a TE that is coming off of a season ending broken leg last year? When he had OVERWHELMINGLY better skill people on his former team?
Yeah. Hope that works out for ya.

I got the feeling Rosenthal was being sarcastic with the jackass comment. Either way, I remember seeing a legitimate article that asked “was McNabb good or bad for Philadelphia.” You only get that kind of “opinion” in Philly. People have legitimate, personal hatred for him for not winning a Super Bowl. He’s a good guy and he played hard for the franchise. There’s no reason not to celebrate him.

This comment is directed to “PackerandDarian”..I’ve been to Philly for a skins game, you guys are all the same..it’s all verbal diarrhea. You’ve become so bitter because you NEVER won shit, you just come up with all these comparisons and jokes to make yourselves feel better..bottom line is the results of the last ten years is zero championships, for both of us…And you just handed over one of the only reasons that the eagles were that good over that period(Westbrook was huge). He may be old, but he’s not done. Only thing that’s done is your chances of going to the superbowl this year..not saying we’re anywhere closer to that eithere. Just wake up philly fans..YOU HAVE ZERO SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONSHIPS!! Skins=3, Boys=5, Gmen=3, philly=bitter.
P.S. We won a playoff game in 05 and went again in 07..so get your facts straight
