PFTV does the NFC North over/under

It’s Wednesday, and that means it’s time for us to begin dumping our batch of freshly-baked (or, as the case may be, half-baked) PFTV segments for the week.

First up?  The NFC North over/under thing.

You know the drill.  Brocato gives me a number of wins for each team, and I predict whether the outcome will be higher or lower.  It’s like The Price Is Right.  Only there’s no price.  And we’re usually not right.

way to toss the packers a bone florio and pretend you think they might actually win as many games as the vikes, i guess all the packer fans complaints about you being a viking fan forced you to sugarcoat your prediction for them.
i have been asked by a couple packer fans to repost my comment from another thread since it is a very fair and accurate forecast of the nfc north this season:
the vikes offense finished #2 in points scored and the d finished #6 in yards against even with ej and toine hurt and the vikes brought back all their starters from last year’s team that went into ot of the nfc championship game and outgained the saints 2-1 back so i think we can all agree that the vikes will own the division and make a deep playoff run again.
the real question as far the division is who challenges the vikes and finishes 2nd this year. 2 years ago it was the bears, last year it was the packers. i don’t wanna play favorites about who it’ll be this year but right now i’m leaning toward the bears just cause i have very grave concerns about the packers defense especially their lack of pass rush and also their horrible special teams play and also because the bears signed some players whereas thompson never does, he only drafts and he’s average at drafting.
i am also concerned about the packers o-line again this season. nobody believes clifton or tauscher will make it through a season again at their age and with how fragile they are, and bulaga who was drafted to be a lt they have already given up on due to his freakishly short arms and footwork so they’ve moved him to lg.
also, mcfatboy is too pass happy and there’s not much of a running game and mason crosby can never make any kicks from the right hash and the packers kick coverage is heinously bad so packers opponents always have a short field. and the injury situation looks really bad, they have to start a 3rd round rookie at safety and matthews has another mangled hammy and he was the only real pass rusher the packers had and the depth at olb is frighteningly shallow because thompson neglected it again.
however, rodgers and their wr’s should be all right if they can stay healthy and rodgers doesn’t get destroyed by his o-line and always hold onto the ball too long again.
adam-chris schefterson if you read this don’t start trying to pretend that i’m being too alarmist and negative about the packers again because i already said that rodgers and the wr’s should be all right.

I think people need to stop thinking “it’s the Lions, they won’t win games”. They have some talent now, if the O Line comes around watch out.

Yawn! Are all Vikings fans this delusional?
the vikes offense finished #2 in points scored and the d finished #6 in yards
    __
You realize Green Bay was 3rd in points scored, and 2nd in d yards allowed?

What’s the over under on Viking fan’s comments on this is the year they are going to win the Superbowl?
That’s right, I can’t count that higher either.
But thanks for playing Viking fans, you win your very own text message from BrINT in just his crocks. Second prize is Chilly in his new dress.

  9. Gravy Makes Sconnies Fat says: Aug 11, 2010 12:51 PM

people act like viking fans think we’re a lock to win the super bowl this year and all the vikes have to do is just show up, that’s not true. having the most talented team doesn’t guarantee you win the super bowl, just look at last season, the destroyed the cowboys and outgained the saints 2-1 but had a freakish amount of turnovers and lost in ot.
so yeah, anything can happen and it’s not just automatic that the vikes win the super bowl and the packers continue their post-favre trend of not winning the division or any playoff games. neither one of those things might come true, you still have to play the games.

  10. okemon says: Aug 11, 2010 1:16 PM

if both the packers and the vikes stay healthy they should both do well. it will come down to the packers/vikings series. if one sweeps the other they will take the division if they both win one it will come down to the final games.

  11. delusionalbearsfan says: Aug 11, 2010 1:16 PM

Wow so the bears will lose more games this year than last year? Even though they played both packer games close last (4 points) and a few other close losses ,with no Brian Urlacher for 15 games, oh yeah and theyve add Julius Peppers and a heathly Tommie Harris, and Matt Forte. Florio your on crack..Im not thinking super but 9 or ten wins isnt out of the question..

    “the games greatest GM”
this is so weird, why is it that kidnap victims always start acting like they like their kidnapper?
it can’t be the packers record since he’s been g.m. cause they’ve only had 2 winning seasons and 1 playoff win in 5 years.
it’s fear most likely. packer fans are probly afraid the gay vampire will find them at night and bite or molest them.

  13. BrentFavre says: Aug 11, 2010 1:43 PM

“a heathly Matt Forte. Florio your on crack..Im not thinking super but 9 or ten wins isnt out of the question..”
Matt Forte can be 110 % and he still won’t get anything behind that Line.
bears are going nowhere when they have to play the Vikings and Packers 4 times.

  14. TFormation says: Aug 11, 2010 1:45 PM

I’m with delusional. 9-7 or 10-6 for the Bears. Whether that saves Lovie’s job or not remains to be seen.
Clayton went to the Bears camp, and liked what he saw from the Martz offense. Have you made it to Bears camp, Florio?

delusionalbearsfan, i agree with you, i think with getting urlacher back and adding peppers and a year’s experience with cutler, the bears will compete with the vikes for the division this year and finish ahead of the packers.
i think people from wisconsin are fat don’t you?

I too would want the Vikings to move if they kept beating my team. But, I guess you will have to live with them in the NFC NORTH.

  20. sand0 says: Aug 11, 2010 3:31 PM

    My amateur analysis.
Lions will be drastically improved from last season and finish last. Biggest concern: being the Lions.
Bears will be about the same as last year. Team improvements offset by more difficult schedule. Biggest concern: Martz offense don’t work
Packers offense I think will be just stellar this season. I think their defense is going to really hold them back again this season and keep them out of contention in big games. Biggest concern: zero QB depth so even a short term injury to Rodgers could derail the season.
Vikings I think will have strong defense and re-establish running dominance. Passing attack won’t be as good with or without Favre. Biggest concern: Favre and health. People forget how many injuries that team endured because of how deep they made it and again in camp the bug is there. I doubt they can battle through so much two seasons in a row.

You’re right, they do. But I look at the Lions as akin to an expansion team at this point. Millen really did a number on this franchise…. There are some very talented players, and they will only get better as more and better talent is added around them. But I just don’t think they have enough pieces in place yet to be seriously considered a contender. They will surprise though…. I don’t think they will have a top-10 pick in next year’s draft.

You make good points. And I would say that the Bears, if Harris returns to his form from a few years back and Urlacher stays healthy, have the best front 7 in the league, hands down. But on the other side of the ball…. The OL will be the determining factor for them. If they can open a couple lanes, Forte and Taylor can do damage, and give the inexperienced WRs the time to get open, then maybe they have a legitimate shot. But I haven’t seen the ability in the line to hold up regularly.

  23. FavreBlows says: Aug 11, 2010 3:51 PM

Sando—you’re an idiot. Flynn is 10x better than TJack, and Favre will be 41 this year. You should be much more concerned about the Vikings back up situation.
Gravy—-you’re beyond an idiot. The Pack finished 7-1 last year and will have an intact O-Line from the start this year. Second year in a new defensive system. And your jacka$$ QB is still d!cking your team around. And it looks like staying away from camp is getting addictive in Minny. Sorry bonehead……I don’t think it’s going to work out for your purple pussies this year.

    Gravy Makes Sconnies Fat,
With a name like that, it’s no wonder you’re more concerned about what happens east of the St Croix than your local team that still doesn’t know for sure who their QB will be this season.
Your assessment of the Packers would make sense if you read more than just headlines before spewing out your opinion. The OLine is fine, only gave up 9 sacks after the two OTs came back in week 9 (after the two Vikes games). Bulaga’s arms are 1/4 inch less than “ideal” length, big friggen deal. They didn’t move him to LG because he can’t play LT, they moved him to get their 5 best linemen on the field at one time. The defense was down to their 6th string CBs last year due to injury and with the exception of Harris, they’re back to full strength. McFatboy is too pass happy? You said yourself that’s the team’s best hope, why wouldn’t they be pass happy?
Thanks for your time, troll. Congrats on winning the regular season last year.

  25. Gravy Makes Sconnies Fat says: Aug 11, 2010 4:10 PM

sando, i agree with your analysis, the only thing i would briefly add about the packers is that their fg kicker who misses everything from the right hash will probly cost them a couple close games plus i don’t think they’ll havae as good a turnover margin this year which could cost them a couple more games plus their defense might be worse than last year cause they lost kampman and jolly and bigby just had surgery and they have to start a 3rd round draft pick at safety along their depth at lb looks really bad right now matthews out which will probly cost them a couple more games plus their o-tackles are even older this year and more fragile and they gave up on bulaga as a ot so they have no backup plan when clifton or tauscher goes down which will probly cost them a couple more games and then when you add the 6 games or so where they’ll just be outmatched by better teams, they could be looking at 0-16 but personally i think they’ll win at least 5 just on effort because i try to see the positive in teams.

  26. Gravy Makes Sconnies Fat says: Aug 11, 2010 4:14 PM

“Bulaga’s arms are 1/4 inch less than “ideal” length”
yeah if the “ideal” length for a tackle’s arms is 13″. bulaga dislocates his shoulders every time he tries to high 5 someone. why do you think the packers already gave up on him as a tackle and switched him to guard and are petitioning the league to let him play with prosthetic arms??

Fairly reasonable post this time, except this. There is no debating here. The Vikings were among the healthiest teams in the entire NFL last season. Period. That’s one of the reasons I think they’re due for a more frustrating year than last year.
They finished the season with one guy on IR, and a few starters who missed a handful of games all season due to injury. That type of luck usually doesn’t happen year after year.
Unless only a small percentage of your team actually participates in training camp.. Hey, they may be onto something here.

The Viking defense continues its merciless pounding of Rodgers, he succumbs, rides the bench trying to remember his own name, the Packers have no back-up QB worth talking about and the Green Bay house of cards collapses. The Packers not only continue their post-favre trend of not winning the division or any playoff games but lose to the Vikings twice, the Lions twice and the Bears twice. Packers finish 14-2 and Wisconsin declares a State of emergency.
The humiliating season over, Green Bay buys billboards in Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis listing their Korean War era Championships, and boasts of the new Stained Glass Windows, simulated mahogany Pews and Menards custom hi-lo shag carpeting in the Packer “Hall Of Fame”…
The people of Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis are filled with envy and uncontrollable laughter. And all 254,963 Packer owners petition for entrance to the Big Ten.
