On Tuesday, a debate emerged regarding whether the Jets had offered to bring owner Woody Johnson to last week’s meeting with the agents for holdout cornerback Darrelle Revis. Johnson said the offer had been made; agent Neil Schwartz said it hadn’t, using the term “blatant lie” to describe the team’s position (though being careful to point out that he wasn’t accusing Johnson himself of lying).
On Wednesday, coach Rex Ryan addressed the latest front in the War of the Revis.
Per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Ryan called the contention “a blatant joke.”
“This is what I would like to have happen — for everybody to put
their cards on the table,” Ryan said.
“Have Darrelle come here with anybody he wanted. We’ll have Mr. Johnson
here. In fact, this is the way I would handle it: We’ll call off
practice. We’ll have our whole team there and meet. That way there’s no
he said-she said. Just get the thing done. And let’s work it that way. . . .
“Let’s
do this. I’m inviting them to come in — Darrelle
to come in with everybody else. Anybody he wants. We’ll have the whole
team there, including the owner. The entire organization. . . . And then
that’s maybe how we’ll get a solution. Everybody wants a solution. Well,
let’s figure a way to do it. Maybe this is a way.”
Meanwhile, we’ve confirmed that the $160 million demand that Gary Myers of the Daily News has attributed to Revis did not come from the Revis camp. Thus, it appears that Myers (or someone from the Jets who fed the information to Myers) merely took the average value of the last two years of the Nnamdi Asomugha contract and multiplied it by 10.
Thus, there’s currently no reason to believe that the Jets and Revis are $40 million apart on the issue of total compensation. More importantly, total compensation has little relevance to the issue at hand.
Revis wants to maximize his truly guaranteed money; until the two sides have meaningful discussions aimed at structuring a deal in a way that separates truly guaranteed money from non-guaranteed guaranteed money (i.e., “D’Brickashaw Bucks”) from non-guaranteed base salaries, no progress will be made — regardless of whether the entire franchise and all employees of Johnson & Johnson attend the meeting.
this is getting boring
Conventional & Rex Ryan? That is like about as similar as North and South.
not sure Rex offering to call off a Team’s practice for one player’s issues will go over well in the locker room, especially since the team is good to go, or however he phrased it yesterday.
Rex Ryan offers unconventional diet plan for his fat ass.
perhaps they can sell tickets to fans to watch the meeting and proceeds go towards revis’ contract…
Thus… there’s reason to believe that, as usual, you, Mike Florio, are continually stoking the flames of these absurd rumors by not doing any bit of research to back up the outrageous factually incorrect stories that spit out on a hourly/ daily basis…
wow, revis is not that good. thats a ridiculous amount of money for an athlete. whats the world coming to?
Rex Ryan really is as dumb as he looks. The only question now is whether he’ll be coaching long enough to see just how badly his team will eventually implode because of his foolish behavior.
This is the last Revis post I will read until I see one that says “Revis signs”. I really don’t care that nothing but another quote has happened.
I seem to be getting tiring of the Revis-Jets story.
Wow, thank God that Florio posted a Rex Ryan quote.
What’s it been about an hour since Jet fans (and many more Jet haters) can comment on a posting!
Mike, for tomorrow after Hard Knocks tonight let’s keep it to just one Revis post and one other Jets post. I am sure the few lonely fans of the Seahawks would enjoy some equal time.
Rex wants all parties involved to come together at “Grannies Ole’ Country Buffet” and start eating until an agreement is reached.
Its called, a “Chow-a-thon” meeting.
Hard knocks should be a good watch.
PFT’s report is at least 3 hrs. later than all the real sports networks announced this.
In fact, this is the way I would handle it: We’ll call off practice. We’ll have our whole team there and meet——————————————–
This has to be the dumbest idea I’ve seen/read so far. This clown is not head coach material. He’s out of his depth clearly
Umm…no Rex. I do not think having the other players in the room is a good idea. Credit for originality, though. LOL.
I like it. Do it rexy, see if revis shows up and tells his side of the story. Everythings tougher in front of ur peers and the whole team should have a say on things. Hard knocks on HBO @ 10 pm. dont act like ur not watching it.
Is Rex willing to wear a dress and knee pads?
Run to the airport to pick him up?
Travel to his hometown to plead and beg?
Have the team offer double the salary without the player even asking? (too late on this one)
Until those things happen, Rex has nothing on Chilly.
How many ways are you going to spin the story to get another Jets/Revis headline, and more Rex bashing posts in, Florio? I agree with the other posters who said the next Revis article we read will say either “He is back at practice” or “He is now on another team”.
i like it….maybe not a fan of rex and his style but this is good..he’s basically saying what any fan would say during a holdout like this..what the F is the hold up? Enough of the lip-service, lets’ get some action!
I was laughing watching this buffoon on NFLN.
Uh,we’ll cancel practice and have the whole team involved.
The Titanic is heading out of the harbor!!
Im starting to miss the Favre stories..
im sure that wont be completely awkward having your teammates around you as u negotiate a contract that will pay you multi millions more than them per year. And I’m sure it will be totally cool with them to watch the guy sitting at home doing nothing get paid more than them while they sweat it out like dogs in 90 degree weather.
What a great example this will set Rex! Go home and complain and whine until you get more money!!!! GREAT Leadership. Great Idea.
what a moron…
Now he’s just playing to the cameras.
All you Jets fans that thought you could have both Nnamdi and Revis can now realize how silly that thought was. You cant even afford to pay Revis, so how could you possible afford to pay both of them. By the way, Nnamdi played out his rookie contract and earned his money as a free agent. He never held out a day of camp.
2000TJ are you serious??? You think if you get hurt on the job there isn’t any compensation????
That is what workers compensation and disability is all about. Even non-union jobs have that available.
Unfortunately I had a coworker who lost a foot in a loading accident and the guy got a settlement of over 1 million.
These deals happen all the time- Why shouldn’t football players who risk lifetime injury be fairly compensated?
Fat.
8-8.
Mevis.
Greedis.
Overrated.
What else?
I see a ESPN 1 hr special coming up soon titled “The contract offer, will he sign or not”"”
There is no problem. He has a contract. He either honors what he signed or he stays home. End of story.
Rex now daily demonstrating how much of an ass, like his father, he is. This guy could be Secretary of State after Hillary leaves to clean BO’s clock. Rex and Barak two babbling idiots droping crap out their mouth like gum ball machines.
Did this unconventional plan include an all you can eat buffet?
Make it a pay per view event………..
Wow Rex is really out of his mind ROFL
Bring the whole team into the negotiations ? Maybe he’s never heard the phrase “let the inmates run the asylum”.
That’s just brilliant….

are you really as dumb as you sound?in this copy cat league, mark it down now,rob ryan will be the most saught after coach in the league.maybe by your team
The Jets did this to themselves. Said they’d resign him, said he was the best, said he could actually lift Rex Ryan……..
But Revis deserves the money and is making nothing for the quality he gives them. Oh don’t you think the Jets have been making large amounts of money with those Revis island shirts, his jersey, and other things? Gimme a break. Pay the man because you already made money off him. i’m glad he’s sticking it to you, unlike the joke deal ferguson got.
Oh the Jets will suck come regular season because of all this. You lose your best guard, best RB, and have a game plan people know about. Sorry Bill Belichek has already scouted you and will know how to beat you handily now.
@ AlanSaysYo
I think you meant to say the only question is whether Rex will live long enough to see just how badly his team will eventually implode. He’s about as healthy as a needle sharing heroin addict.
Ryan seems to be digging himself a grave. Maybe he should shut his meat locker long enough to let the GM handle this. He just keeps adding fuel to the fire. What a moron. I love it!
Ok Florio, a good take on the latest developments without any hit of bias.
So if the Jets give in to Revis how long do we think it will be before Holmes asks for his contract to be rewritten – then probably Keller – and why not pay Green like a starting running back…
As I said before – the Jets are already paying out 61.5% of revenues to players – when the owners are trying to get this down to 56 or 57%…
Let me know when Cuba Gooding Jr. and Tom Cruise offer to assist Revis in screaming, “Show me the money!”
This really is getting really annoying, but to be honest, I understand where both sides are coming from. I really wish they would hammer out the issues behind closed doors, as opposed to playing games in the media and wasting the fans (my) time.
I’m starting to miss the Favre saga…that sort of says it all when it comes to this BS about Revis. He’s going to get paid, you know it, he knows it and the Jets know it…it’s just a matter of who’s going to blink first…I say the Jets will after my Ravens beat their asses in Week 1.
Last point…Rex Ryan was the defensive coordinator for the Ravens (I’m a huge Ravens fan – born and raised) and I loved him when he was here…player’s coach, friendly, and so on. NOW, I cannot stand the man. Is there anyone more annoying and loud than Rex Ryan? Plus, he had his stomach stapled like 3-4 months ago and he’s still a porpoise…can someone tell him to put down the fork while they tell him not to worry about how contract negotiations should be handled? He’s a hillbilly coach who now thinks he’s sophisticated enough to get involved with complex contact negotiations.
Ok, my rant is over.
Get over it you gotta work and stay healthy for your money he made his millions already he now just making money for his kids and grandkids. Brick understands it and that’s why he took his contract with no holdout he knows he’s making plenty
And thats why the Jets haven’t done much since BroadWay Joe…
The Jet would be like the Lions if they wasn’t in NY.. Very Overrated team @ best and really haven’t done much of nothing..
And now this guy wants a new contract?… Naumdi Of the Raiders has been a premier players the last 3yrs… Give me a break, & How can you blame the Raiders for paying for a guy that’s been in the probowl the last three years..
Theses guy’s need to quit…
It’s like that time Steve Lawrence met with the Blues Brothers to discuss a gig in a sauna. The the camera goes wide and you see the entire band in the sauna wearing towels.
Well how many “D’brick Bucks” are they apart? I will pay 5 “Stanley Nickels” to both sides if they will just end this thing already.
Isn’tthere a “best corner in the game” each year? I mean, a couple of years ago, no one would say Namdi wasn’t the greatest corner in the NFL. Before him i remember Antoine Winfiend getting a ton of credit (pre-Minn. years), and obviously Champ Bailey was on top for so long. Won’t they just proclaim someone else the best pretty soon?
I’m not saying Revis is bad by any means, but is a cornerback really worth all this trouble? Trade him, take one or two first rounders for him, and move on.
Rex ryan should STFU and focus on his team on the ground instead of revis. Even with revis they are at best a 7 win team
No way me-vis would go for that. I like the idea…it puts him in a corner where he would look to the entire team that he doesnt care about them or the goals of the organization. That would make it very easy to quash any locker room sympathy for revis. Ryan can be a jerk, but this is a smart move…put up or shut up Me-vis. Kinda hard to sound worthy of what he is asking without saying he deserves the money more than mangold, etc.
Can we have a one-day ban on Rex/Jets talk? Because that’s all they are, talk.
Not sure how well Revis did with his coursework at Pitt…but I’d be willing to bet the house that he’s intelligent enough to identify Rex’s not so hidden message in suggesting that the head coach would like the entire team to be at the negotiation table.
Rex wants Revis to think about the team and his teammates (at least a little bit) while deciding how much money he’ll settle for. 100 million….200 million?!?
I’m a Bengals fan, and I happen to love the way Ryan acts towards the media and his team. He basically just told Revis that he’s important enough to shut down practice in order to workout the contract details. That’s got to stroke Revis’ ego a bit. The fans are going to love Ryan trying to help get this done. The ultimately puts the preverbial ball back in Revis and his agent’s court. No excuses now. Meet and get it signed or stop whinning.

I wonder how the team is feeling about how their head coach/organization is handling this. Calling a meeting to discuss a players contract in front of the other players. Should go over real swell… Easy Rex, you’re losing them.
The Jets shouldn’t be handling this situation so publicly… That’s how this whole mess started… but they’re classy like that.
after rex ryan’s statement about everybody coming to a labor negotiating jamboree, don’t you think the agents for mangold and harris are standing there wringing their hands in glee.what better turn of events could happen to mangold and harris, now they have the jets by the short and curlies also.way to go rex.can you imagine if the three threw in together, ouch!
I am true believer that if a man signs a contract he needs to shutup and play….but as a Ravens fan I say…you go Revis I would hold out until week 2…….
Florio, you are a joke. Why is it necessary to write an article about the Jets and Revis every other hour? You make it seem like there is only 1 team the really matters. Did Rex bang a girl you were going after, and now you have some high school grudge against the Jets?
This is a pretty smart move by Rex, sounds almost like group therapy. I don’t give a poo how it happens, just get the man into camp. Hard Knocks is gonna be good stuff.

Actually, Rexy should have gotten this put on Pay-per-View. Then, they could probably afford to pay Revis. Or better yet, reduce the cost of thei PSLs so the “fans” can afford to go to their games and laugh at them in person.
If Rex keeps treating his job like he’s on some reality show with his forced sensationalism he’s going to be out of a job and very, very unemployable in the future.
Don’t know why everyone is saying that Revis facing his teammates would work well in the jests favor? I’m sure Tanny has lied to most of them as well, so they may actually be on Revis’ side.

Panic Time
BigSuede are you serious? How about comparing apple to apples here. I don’t negotiate with my employer for a salary in the event I get injured. I guess I could, but I would laughed out of my bosses office.
My employer carries workman’s comp insurance because the state compels it to. And if I get injureed while working, I file an insurance claim with that company.
We all want guaranteed money in case of anything – injury, laid off, my office blows up, etc. The fact is that there are some risks everyone takes – and getting injured is part of the game
Think before you type when you reply to this.
Cancel practice to have a meeting with Mevis….LOL…I now have confirmation that fat Rex is indeed a retard
@ anthony, before you start bashing anybody over the internet, learn proper english. I don’t care what you say cause I don’t think you have any intelligent thought going on in the first place.
@ zach, yeah they’re all talk. that’s why they said they were going to make a serious run at the superbowl and only came up short by one game. that sure is a whole bunch of talk without the walk, huh?
Anybody who wants to bash the Jets, it’s getting old. I know you gotta get your laughs in now cause in 4 months from now you won’t be the ones laughing anymore, but come on. Enough’s enough. I was just reading a post about the Patriots, and I sure as hell don’t like ‘em, but I didn’t take that opportunity to basm ‘em. The Jets have a ton of talent, nobody can deny it. Tell me they have washed up veterans… They’ve been drafting better than pretty much anybody the past 5 years or so. David Harris, Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, Shonn Greene, Mark Sanchez, Dustin Keller, the list goes on. They might not all be perennial pro-bowlers but they all contributed to their AFC championship game appearance last season. The only real bust was Gholston, and the Jets weren’t the only team that would’ve taken him that high. If a 4-3 team took him at that slot they might’ve even thought he was worth it. People hate on Rex Ryan. I dare you to find another coach who can motivate his players like he does. They believe in themselves cause of Rex Ryan and come out of the tunnel amped up cause of Rex Ryan. Even if you don’t like him, you cannot say he isn’t a huge upgrade over Mangini. Either way, I can’t wait to go down to the Meadowlands week 2 and watch my Jets play the Patriots. I’m optimistic about that game, no matter where Revis is.
I thought you guys were fine without him, Rex?
Marty Schottenheimer commenting on the Revis situation on Hard Knocks was also a joke.
And pretty annoying.
