Belief in Parmele could lead to a Willis McGahee trade

For our next post, we present an interesting line from Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun this morning.

“One reason why the Ravens might be willing to trade Willis McGahee is
their growing confidence in running back Jalen Parmele, who should get a
large number of carries in Thursday night’s preseason opener,” Hensley writes.

McGahee’s salary — $3.6 million in what will surely be the last year of his deal — also makes McGahee a trade candidate, but tougher to move.  Would a team like the Seahawks consider adding him at the end of camp?

McGahee has received kudos for a strong month to this point, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him “showcased” for a possible deal.  Parmele and fullback Le’Ron McClain could then handle all the work in Baltimore behind Ray Rice.

We know one guy that would welcome a few extra carries.

If Seattle wants to send Marcus Trufant to Baltimore I won’t complain

I guess he is going to Denver or Washington. Seems all the running backs are headed there these days.

what does bernie parmalee think of this?

  4. Benchillada says: Aug 12, 2010 12:26 PM

Jalen Parmele is good, but he is better as a kick returner for now. McGahee was strong in the red zone last year, and replacing him with Parmele at this point should not be a possibility. However, if the trade was for a shut-down corner, it would probably make sense. If the Ravens want to beat the likes of Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, their secondary needs to be stout.

  9. DemocratsAreStupid says: Aug 12, 2010 12:52 PM

The Ravens should hold onto McGahee. The reason they didn’t get further in 01 is because they didn’t have a capable backup to Jamal Lewis. McGahee is good insurance to have in an uncapped year.

Ballinmore , why would seattle send their shut down corner to the ravens for McGahee? Tru, is back to pro bowl form, we would be more than happy to trade you branch, and jones together!

  11. Raven Maniac says: Aug 12, 2010 1:02 PM

People underestimate Willis. Yes, he is a backup RB, but behind Ray Rice, basically any RB would be a backup (obviously not CJ, AP, etc). Dude can still run, not with the same step, but he finds holes and gets in the endzone, and injuries seem to be a thing of the past for him. I wouldn’t be willing to trade him for anything less than a shut down corner.

This is just the local media trying to serve their own agenda. They don’t like McGahee because he wasn’t brought in or drafted by Harbaugh. Because he’s from THE U and is proud of it.
The Ravens hate to give up draft picks, and they gave up quite a few picks to get McGahee.
Bottom line… the Ravens aren’t trading McGahee, McClain, or Rice.
But if they were, it would make a whole lot more sense to trade RICE, since he’s going to be demanding a huge contract after this season. It’s clear that any decent RB is going to perform behind that awesome offensive line. They don’t need to pay Rice a huge contract, just as most NFL teams don’t need to. You can always draft a young back. The league is all about passing because of all the rule changes. Just look at who was in the Super Bowl: Colts and Saints.

  13. Noliaboy75 says: Aug 12, 2010 1:11 PM

I don’t know mcgahee’s trade value, but I do know there is no way you are getting a shut down corner in return.

  14. hazi59 says: Aug 12, 2010 1:14 PM

Isn’t huggy bear Fargas still a FA? If I was Seattle, I would sign him before trading for McGaySHE.

  15. frox says: Aug 12, 2010 1:18 PM

Not going to happen. While everyone thinks the reason the Ravens did not win the Super Bowl in 2001 was because they let go of Dilfer and got Grbac, I heard Ozzie NEwsome himself say this summer that he believes it was because he did not get depth behind JAmal Lewis. Jamal went down and they were screwed (although 11-5 and a playoff win is something most teams would love). McGahee dropped 14 TDs last season and he clinched the playoff birth with a huge run in Oakland. Willis is not going anywhere.

  16. PSURavens says: Aug 12, 2010 1:19 PM

Democrats I agree the Ravens will need a good backup, but don’t forget that McClain rushed for nearly 1,000 yards a few years ago and will fill in nicely. They have another fullback in the makings as we speak.
I’ve been a McGahee supportor since he has been here, but we have depth at RB and if we have to trade him to help our CB’s, then it’s worth it.

hahahaha Jalen Parmalee? are you guys f’n serious? They tell you people anything just to see if you’ll be dumb enough to report it. Im sure of it now.

    @habibfromnewdehli
trading ray rice would be the most boneheaded move any front office could make in the nfl. The ravens won’t do it. Yeah he’ll want a lot of money after his contract is up, but guess what teams do when they have good players who’s contract expires, any guesses? They pay them. And your comment about Rice being a running back and how the nfl is now a passing league and running backs aren’t as valued. Ray Rice had 700 yards receiving and 78 receptions last year, those are better than what most #2 wide receivers put up. I can’t believe you would consider that a thought.

The best remaining Free Agent RB’s are:
Ladell Betts, Chris Brown, Samkon Gado, Ahman Green, Kevin Jones, and Brian Westbrook.
That being said, I couldn’t see any of these guys playing in Seattle either due to scheme or location…with the exception of Westbrook schematically. Its all about the schematics…lol
