Darrius Heyward-Bey has a bad memory

They say that NFL cornerbacks need to have short memories.  As it turns out, Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey simply has a bad one.

In a recent interview with KNBR in San Francisco, Heyward-Bey talked about his experiences as an NFL rookie.

“I think the best thing that happened to me as a rookie was playing every game and starting every game,” Heyward-Bey said.  “That was something that a lot of rookies don’t get to do.”

He’s right.  Not a lot of rookies get to play every game and start every game.  And, as it turns out, Heyward-Bey didn’t, either.

As the guys at have pointed out, Heyward-Bey played in only 11 games last year.  Heyward-Bey missed the final five games of the season.

In his defense, maybe he thinks that, like college football, the NFL only plays 11 games.

DHB is a waste. He may show some talent in practice but in a game he is all ” alligator arms” He will join JaJunk pretty soon and dead Al will say it was niot his pick !

  2. bigrig says: Aug 12, 2010 2:52 PM

Played in every game and didn’t drop a single pass, either.
    Yeah, that’s the ticket.

  3. Thunderbolt says: Aug 12, 2010 2:53 PM

Speaking of bad memories, I don’t recall Darrius Heyward-Bey playing QB, but I’m sure it couldn’t have been any worse than JaMarcus Russell doing so.

    >>>As it turns out, Raiders quarterback Darrius Heyward-Bey simply has a bad one.

  5. Don't take things so personally says: Aug 12, 2010 2:56 PM

Yeah but he played all the games he could without injury. Arguing semantics really with this.

  6. Hovenaut says: Aug 12, 2010 2:58 PM

Whilst he may not produce a Hall of Fame career at the position, Heyward-Bey plays WR, not QB.
Top-notch NFL journalists need those short memories too.

  7. Fast Richie says: Aug 12, 2010 2:58 PM

Either that or maybe he meant the EVERY GAME that he was active for.
I think maybe you’re splitting hairs here just a little bit Florio!

  8. doe22us says: Aug 12, 2010 2:58 PM

Tis was a long season for him and Raider fans alike probably felt like a century to them.

  9. SCole025 says: Aug 12, 2010 3:07 PM

That, boys and girls, is what we like to refer to as “irony”…

  10. Alualuwho says: Aug 12, 2010 3:11 PM

Florio…You moron. Unless you start to improve, the long time viability of PFT will be in jeopardy and you might have to move to L.A. Just because you have a naming rights deal with NBC, it doesnt assure that you wont move. Jackass.

  11. Bill In DC says: Aug 12, 2010 3:21 PM

Well, that and College teams now play 12 games, not 11….

  12. wmt says: Aug 12, 2010 3:24 PM

I’m sure he meant that he played in every game until he got hurt. Uhhh, it doesn’t take a genious to figure that one out either. Way to look like an idiot………………….again.

  13. jjared1101 says: Aug 12, 2010 3:29 PM

I’m sure he just meant that he was able to start and play in every game he was active for, Florio. This is reaching a little bit.

  14. snnyjcbs says: Aug 12, 2010 3:31 PM

I listened to the interview and DHB was talking about games he was able to play when healthy.
DHB did start every game in which he was cleared to play. I remember the first few years Nnamdi played after being Drafted.
I remember all the digg’s and calls of BUST, huge reach and that he never should have went before round 3. Many of those people are the same fools on DHB today.
With regards to Nnamdi, Nnamdi, Al Davis and the Raiders have made fools out of all the doubters. Today those folks have their heads so far up Nnamdi’s &^% he see’s them in the mirror when brushing his teeth.
Any person that would write off a receiver after 12 year is a fool. My guess is that DHB will make fools out of all the people that have been knocking him as well.

  15. AlanSaysYo says: Aug 12, 2010 3:36 PM

Edit the article to say he played only 11 games because he sprained his ankle, you charlatan hack. He played in every game he could have. Are you trying to make a cute little semantic distinction? You’re irresponsible, uninformed or both.

  16. daraider84 says: Aug 12, 2010 3:51 PM

Wow, people are ignorant. All you national persepective people who know nothing about the intricacies of the team say “he’s a bust”, when all you saw was one or two highlights of a bad rookie season. Just as an example, Nnamdi Asomugha was an absolutely JOKE for 3 season before he started to figure it out. You people know nothing about football, just your Raiders bias.
Its the same as calling players busts who havent had a full heatlthy season. Maybe give them a chance and see what they can really do when healthy? Idiots….

  17. TheMadStork says: Aug 12, 2010 3:53 PM

While he definitely look bigger, stronger and more confident in front of the camera, compared to last season, he still has a lot to prove. He addressed it by working from the moment last season ended by catching balls all day with his hands, not his arms and chest, working with the best CB in the league after practices, Nnamdi and by gaining 10 lbs of muscle. The mistake you make, whether intended spin or your own confusion, may have been that he meant he started every game he played in. He’s still a young kid but a class act and even though he may have been a reach at where he was taken, he was still considered one of the top 3 WR’s in the draft, #1 by a couple of of them AND, you’re gonna like this Florio, he had better stats than Cris Carter as a rookie!!!!!!!! Cris Carter 5 Catches for 84 yards!!!!!!! hahahahhahahaha :PPPPP After people like Cris and the other ANAL-ysts blasted DHB so badly, I’m not surprised he was so shaky last season but nonetheless, he caught 9 passes for 124 yards and 1 TD. So…drum roll please……give the kid a chance, its only his 2nd year and try to be more objective 🙂

  18. Steeler fans are tools says: Aug 12, 2010 3:56 PM

don’t really need him. Schillens, Murphy, Higgins, and Miller do just fine. DHB, make sure Cable has a fresh glass of gatorade every quarter

  19. TheMadStork says: Aug 12, 2010 3:56 PM

Also that was with Russel throwing to him so props to him for almost doubling Cris Carter’s rookie season numbers! This year, you will all be eating your words with Jason Campbell throwing to him. He has over 60% compl % and an 80+ QB ranking and that was at Washington, who were worse than Oakland last year. lol… Threw for 3600 yards, 20 TD’s and 15 Ints with no #1 TE, weak WR’s, a new system, no line, no OC and a moron for a coach. Yes, I am quite confident DHB has a breakout year.

  20. bayou says: Aug 12, 2010 4:08 PM

It appears he can count as good as he can get open against opposing cornerbacks and catch a football! Oh wait, he only caught 9 passes last year.

  21. TheProdigious1 says: Aug 12, 2010 4:08 PM

This article is preposterous and that’s because it’s the most ridiculous mainstream media sources, by Mike Florio. This is not the job for you and that because you aren’t a true sports analysis or editor period.

  22. Robski says: Aug 12, 2010 4:16 PM

Another quality Al Davis draft pick. If he is still breathing in five years, you’re going to hear “With the second pick in the 2016 NFL draft, the Oakland Raiders select Speedy Gonzalez, wide receiver, Tijuana State University.”

  23. hendeeze says: Aug 12, 2010 4:23 PM

He was sippin on that sizzurp

  24. Zach says: Aug 12, 2010 4:25 PM

“I remember all the digg’s and calls of BUST, huge reach and that he never should have went before round 3. Many of those people are the same fools on DHB today.”
JaMarcus Russel is a good football player!

  25. emdub52 says: Aug 12, 2010 4:44 PM

I usually defend you Florio, but this time you are grasping at straws.
Do you really think that DHB thinks he played and started in 16 games?
Maybe he was talking about every game he was in. Maybe he was talking about every game he was healthy enough to play in.
Either way, you are taking one line of diologe out of an interview and bashing the kid for it.
    Shame on you Florio, shame.

  26. AlDavisIsGod says: Aug 12, 2010 4:47 PM

Tango you retarded pig: Still haven’t broken out the dictionary I see. (Since you don’t know: it’s a book that shows you how to spell big words like “not”. It’s not spelled “niot” IDIOT.
You have a lot of balls calling anyone else a waste since you’re the biggest waste of air around. And you are round, too, you fat pig, blimp.
Get a life or do everyone a favor and eat a shotgun, loser.

  27. granadafan says: Aug 12, 2010 5:04 PM

Wow, AlDavisIs(not)God, you’re going to blast someone for a simle typo? Don’t know about your keyboard, but the i and o keys are right next to each other. It’s one thing to intentionally misspell words or be gramatically incorrect like, “Florio YOUR (you’re) a loser!”, which show a lack of education. It’s something dramatically different for a typo, which is mere slopiness.

  28. AlDavisIsGod says: Aug 12, 2010 5:27 PM

Granadafan: I’m not blasting Tango the retard for a simple typo. I’ve read too many of his idiotic, ignorant, uneducated and just plain stupid comments. He’s a moron with nothing constructive to say, talks down the Raiders players, God (AKA Al Davis) and claims to have seasons tickets. If he has so much contempt for the Raiders he should give up his tickets and let real Raiders fans use them.

  29. Sigildark says: Aug 12, 2010 5:29 PM

JaMarcus Russel is a good football player!
Others have said well enough that Florio is not smart enough to know that he was refering to the games he was healthy enough to play. But…
What in the hell does Russell have to do with any of this Zach? Way to take a quote out of context moron. The quote you reference was clearly about Asomugha, not Russell.
Are you Florio in disguise or a complete idiot? Either way, there’s a job for you at PFT.

  32. Rothlestool says: Aug 12, 2010 6:09 PM

Substitute the word “appear” in for the word “play” as being mostly accurate, as most Raider fans will attest that Heyward-Bae really did not play at any time during the season. His appearance fee is better than most former presidents.

  33. 1nationraidernation says: Aug 12, 2010 6:20 PM

water under the bridge….it’s a new year, it’s a new season, and a new DHB… on him all you want, at least he has somebody who isn’t drinking cough syrup on game day, and has somebody he can actually understand in the huddle….Lets get real….J-Bust was the most difficule to understand we he spoke with that cajun dialect…no wonder the player could never line up in the right formation
    GO RAIDERS!!!!!!! We’re back!

  34. JimmyY says: Aug 12, 2010 6:25 PM

That’s funny granadafan, simle = simple, slopiness = sloppiness. Dbag.

  35. edgy says: Aug 12, 2010 7:06 PM

DHB was a joke, no matter what QB threw to him (5 of 26, 19.2% – Russell; 4 of 14, 28.6% – Gradkowski). 4 of his receptions came in 2 games (1 per QB) and he was 5 of 31, 16.1% sans those 2 games (4 of 9, 44.4%). You can say all you want about Russell but they had problems with their receivers, with or without him in the lineup.
With Murphy and DHB bogging down the lineup, Russell hit 48.8% of his passes, Gradkowski, 54.7% and Frye, 60.9%. Take them out of the equation and Russell hit 59.8% of his passes, Gradkowski, 65.3 and Frye, 64.3. Murphy got better as the year went on but DHB never showed any progress.

  36. Big Tex says: Aug 12, 2010 7:33 PM

Calling someone an idiot after writing “genious”… GENIUS!!!! BTW, was Bey really hurt or was the true injury to all the footballs bouncing off those skillets that he has at the ends of his arms.
To those bringing up Chris Carter as an example of how great DHB is going to become; DHB played in and started 11 games. Carter played in 9 games, started 0. Not sure that they had equal chances to contribute as rookies.

Eh. Schillens is brittle. Higgins has PTSD. Murphy is a football player for sure, but can’t stretch the field. They actually do need Hayward-Bey.

Damn Florio, This article you posted just shows what and ass and hack you truly are!!! I’ve seen you stoop pretty low before but this might take the cake. Its obvious you didnt hear the interview or you would clearly know he was talking about every game in which he played. Geez, you can be a real jackass…..

Think Al knows he traded his 2011 first round pick to the Pats for Seymour and his 2 sacks?
Thanks, Joe, er, Ed, I mean Al.
Damn Raiders threads. I start to lose my mind on here too. C ya.

To Aldavisisanidiot: Let it be known I am a much bigger Raider fan that you will ever be. You are just a brainwashed idiot that cannot see Dead Al is a waste of an owner who continued to make horrible picks such JaJunk and DHB until the balance of the minority owners said enough and made some decent picks in 2010.

  42. AlDavisIsGod says: Aug 18, 2010 9:09 AM

Tango the retarded 40 year old virgin: Proving what a retard you are is just too easy. Let’s see, now you’re trying to tell me that you were in the Raiders war room when draft decisions were being made, right? Too funny. Just because a whale like you takes up four seats at the stadium doesn’t make you a bigger fan, it makes you a pigger fan. As far as being brainwashed goes that’s the funniest of them all. You are the moron who’s been brainwashed by the media. Take a look at God’s (AKA Al) record and you’ll see no one in the NFL has ever done any more for the sport or the league than He.

  43. tango says: Aug 18, 2010 12:06 PM

To:aldvisisajerkidiotretard. Dead Al has done a lot for the NFL ? Are you frickin kidding me because you are clearly kidding yourself. Dead Al has not been a factor since the 1960’s. Since then all he has done is litigate and alienate. Screwed the Oakland fan base and has respect from about , maybe 5% of of us that show up at the Coliseum. Put down the crack pipe !

  44. AlDavisIsGod says: Aug 18, 2010 11:10 PM

Tango you delusional fat retard: take a look at NFL films they have a documentary on God (AKA Al Davis) that very clearly (even for a total moron like you) illustrates all that God has done for the NFL. I know you’re too stupid to read but in this case all you have to do is watch the pretty pictures and they will clearly illustrate what an out of touch humpback you are.

  45. tango says: Aug 19, 2010 2:00 PM

  46. AlDavisIsGod says: Aug 19, 2010 7:32 PM

Tango you retarded blimp: I guess that means you’re too stupid to even watch the video. Can’t say that I’m really surprised. As usual you have no answers, no retort, just more blather. Can’t say that I’m surprised about that, either.
I won’t have any trouble finding you in the Black Hole: you’ll be the fat pig hogging four seats.
