With the NFL trying its best to persuade fans to witness the ultimate brand of 3D football, an NFL game will be televised for the first time in 3D.
Sean Leahy of USA Today reports that the September 2 preseason finale between the Giants and the Patriots will be broadcast in 3D, in a limited area. The broadcast will be available in New York, New Jersey, and New England.
In 2008, a game between the Chargers and Raiders was produced in 3D and beamed to theaters in New York, San Diego, and Boston. Last year, the Cowboys broadcast a portion of their game against the Chargers in 3D, but only on the giant drive-in theater screens hovering over their field of play. (The quality of the effort generated more “boos” than “oohs”.)
We had believed that the technology initially would be limited to theaters, which would create potentially significant revenues via the imposition of movie-style ticket prices. But why limit the pool of people who can enjoy 3D, especially since it can be pumped into millions more homes than theaters, and thus generate millions more dollars via pay-per-view charges?
That said, in-home 3D has a long way to go, and it likely will be years before 3D televisions find themselves in wide use. Thus, when it comes to the challenge of getting people to continue coming to live games, the NFL should consider this to be a head start.
Meanwhile, we assume that the Jets are pissed that the Giants and the Patriots, the Jets in-stadium and in-division arch-rivals, got picked for the first 3D broadcast. We also assume that Giants V.P. of communications Pat Hanlon is nodding and smiling.
already? for the love of god! how much do these suckers cost? don’t they care about the recession? time to sell the car I guess…
Wow, so it’ll feel like I’m actually ON the field watching Pierre Woods and the rest of the fourth string miss tackles? I haven’t been this excited since Captain EO.
I’d rather see Jenna Jameson in 3D.
3D football is dumb
I would still enjoy watching football if it were on a 10-inch black and white TV with rabbit ears and a fuzzy picture. I do not need to see football in 3D.
3D televisions will find themsevles in wide use in the next few years. Adding 3D capabilities to a television is relatively cheap and it will soon be a standard feature on a lot of sets. What you probably meant to say is that it will be years before we have any compelling, full-time 3D content available for broadcasting.
Plus, I don’t want Brett Favre’s crank jumping out of the screen at me.

Don’t buy one. In about 2-4 years (Possibly sooner) they will have the technology where the lights behind the screen will project a 3D image and you will not have to look like a douche wearing the glasses.
Unless you REALLY want one I guess.
Wow. The last preseason game? Can’t wait to see the matchup of Zac Robinson and Rhett Bomar in 3D!!!!!
Why not? If people don’t like it then they’re free not to go.
3D = Who cares…
The NFL needs to wait till the technology is perfected before they go balls to the wall in their effort to rake in even more cash. Maybe the players are right.
Hope they broadcast highlights of the David Tyree amazing helmet catch on Steroid Harrison, that would be great in 3D.
3d wont help the giants get some healthy WRs and usable RBs!
Haha it’s great that this is posted under Jets news. PFT couldn’t go without mentioning the Jets even when it has nothing to do with the team. Great stuff.
Giants fans, Patriots fans – If you don’t like the Jets getting all the coverage maybe you should take a closer look at who’s doing the reporting? Media is just spoon feeding it to you guys when it has nothing to do with your teams at all.
“it will be years before we have any compelling, full-time 3D content available for broadcasting.”
@AlanSaysYo,
Since they can’t provided compelling full time content for 2D I doubt they’ll ever do so for 3D either. 500 channels of sh*t on most of the time.
The thing about 3d TVs is that, unlike in theaters, it doesn’t come out at you, it goes back into the screen, providing depth in that way. It isn’t nearly as cool.
jets are irrelevent… no big surprise here.
AWESOME!!!
SO THE 5 PEOPLE IN THE COUNTRY WHO CAN AFFORD A 3DTV SYSTEM CAN WATCH IT!!!!!!!
So stupid. I’m so tired of all this 3D shit.
@ cbatchel – Miracles like that won’t happen in another 10000 years.
HDTV is fine with me, 3D TV is stupid………besides I don’t want Gay Brady sitting on my lap tuning my meat whistle.
Just curious about the people that are dogging on 3-D…how many of you have actually seen it? And not the BS from the 80′s. I’m talking the new 3-D technology that they are putting on I-Max. Granted…I doubt many people can afford a screen that’s 25′x50′…but the technology is nothing to sneeze at and only getting better.
Belicheat has been filming opposing teams’ practices in 3D for years.
Giants….Patriots….3D…last preseason game?
Does anyone care about any of these?

3D viewing is really awesome. I’ve been to theaters to see a concern in 3D and the world cup final in 3D. Both were really amazing and kind of felt like you were there in the stadium, but in a really comfortable chair
I’ve never seen football in 3D but I imagine it would be pretty awesome.
Guy at work bought one to watch the Yankee game in 3D. Funny thing is he only bought two glasses and 4 people showed up his house to watch it. So 3 of the 5 people had to watch the game with that damn mirror image behind it. 3D sucks!!!
Unfortunately, for 3D to be really cool for football would require a lot cameras placed in the endzone. What would be cooler than seeing the pass coming right at you or a LB coming at you at full speed? It would look great! It would also suck ass for anyone who spent a fortune on endzone seats at the game, who will now have their views rountinely blocked by the camera ops. Typical NFL, give a little, charge a lot, screw the fans who show up at the games.
@ Cjspiller,
Congratulations! The “latent” part of your homosexuality has been cured!

You have no worries, since you obviously have a rancid vagina.
Those wierd teams out on the flakey Left Coast will have their games telecast in 4D.
They are not real expensive. I bought a 73 inch Mitsubishi that is 3D capable for 1700.00 with another 300 to get the 3D setup. It has the best clarity of any HDTV I’ve seen. If they get enough games in 3D I will go for it. Football is all I like on TV anyways so I might as well enjoy it. With NFL Network, Sunday Ticket, and Tivo DVR I can watch football 24-7. If 3D makes it better I’m all for it!
@txtumbleweed ..do you think every one has 1700 to trow at a tv ? florio dont even have hbo!
Apparently people didnt see the 1/2 of the 3D Cowboy game. Complete disaster.
Why the F would you want to watch the game in 3d anyway.
