Terrell Owens on Bengals camp: "toughest that I've been through"

Terrell Owens has been through eight training camps with the 49ers, two with the Eagles, three with the Cowboys and one with the Bills. But Owens says none of those camps has been as difficult as the one he’s going through right now with the Bengals.

“No camp I’ve been to has been easy. This ranks in the top toughest that I’ve been through,” Owens said. “I think that’s partially because of the way they schedule things. There’s not as many breaks between periods and as far as when I have to do stuff with the offense.”

The good news for the Bengals is that (unlike 2005 in Philadelphia) Owens isn’t making training camp tough on the team. Owens says this camp is tough in large part because of how hard he’s working to learn the Bengals’ offense.

“Every day is going to be different,” Owens said. “Some days I spend extra time in my room looking over plays or after meetings talking about certain routes and formation. I’m still trying to get adjusted to alignment adjustments, my spots on the field on certain routes and combinations with certain formations.”

Owens added that once he has the offense down, “we’ll get better.”

While it was his own choice to go there, chasing the almighty dollar, Owens is no doubt thrilled just to be out of the NFL Siberia that is Buffalo.

  2. TheDPR says: Aug 12, 2010 7:39 AM

Could it be tougher because he’s getting older and because the Cincinnati area is horrible this time of year?

  3. MACK DADDY says: Aug 12, 2010 7:48 AM

Come on Terrell, don’t you know there are a whole bunch of ways to get out of all the hard work?

  5. WhoDey31 says: Aug 12, 2010 8:03 AM

Heck yeah they’ll get better once he gets the offense down… He’s going to be a huge part of the offense.. With chad and him together (potentially two #1 receivers) and getting Antonio Bryant (who is studying the offense like crazy right now) back to good health, it’s gonna be like shooting fish in a barrel… It Carson can’t get it done this year, I’m afraid he’ll never be able to again… I have faith. WHO DEY!

Hmm. I wonder how the media will flip these comments around to try to stir up some controversy. I’m sure they will figure out a way.

  9. MrHumble says: Aug 12, 2010 8:23 AM

Maybe it’s becuz he realizes no other team wanted him and he’s not a shoo-in to make the team…..for once T.O. has to prove he belongs.

  10. Laxer37 says: Aug 12, 2010 8:24 AM

TO will learn that Bengals practices get tougher. When they break camp they’ll return to their practice field under a highway overpass and are the only NFL team without an indoor training facility.
Division II college programs have better facilities.

  11. BengalsDouche2 says: Aug 12, 2010 8:26 AM

@BeaverThomas- Terrell has always been the perfect citizen. Check his record. However, he has had issues being the perfect teammate. So far so good with us!
I’m not worried about our receivers. I’m worried about CPalmer and the O-line. If they can’t get it together, we’re done. The line looked abysmal in the pre-season game. And Carson looked like the gun shy statue he has been for the past few years. Hopefully he gets things together within the next few weeks.

  12. luderiffic says: Aug 12, 2010 8:26 AM

No comment Florio? Usually you put your spin on everything. Must not have any grudges against TO for whatever reason.

  13. jwill007 says: Aug 12, 2010 8:29 AM

Hopefully we avoid injuries and we win…we need to keep team chemistry high at all cost….Can you imagine Adam “Formerly known as Pacman” Jones acting professional in front of the media??? Or saying “Im going to do everything they tell me to do” Or even avoiding the cops with a professional behavior as they followed him twice in the past months???
Look people we dont deny we have some characters but RIGHT NOW these characters are trying their best to act civilized and be a part of something that could POTENTIALLY BE SPECIAL…..
Stay positive fellas and place the chip on your shoulders and show the media and hatin fans people can change……We’re behind you!

Doesn’t matter what TO, or any other receiver does this year if the O line can’t block and Carson gets his “happy feet” again. He thinks camp is tough…..
Hopefully these things get ironed out sooner than later. Have all the pieces this season. This year rests squarely on Carson’s ability to be a top NFL quarterback. Hopefully he can get back to his 2005 form.

  19. bogmon says: Aug 12, 2010 8:49 AM

Now that T.O. is a bit older, I’m sure it’s a change to NOT be far and away the best athlete on the team.
There are alot of talented dudes on that team and he needs to work his ass off to keep up, where as in other spots (especially Buffalo) he was by far the best guy at his position.

  23. thepuretruth says: Aug 12, 2010 9:19 AM

T.O. could have worked this hard for any other team he was with, his mouth kept him from being the greatest receiver ever. To me, T.O. is nothing more than a mouth with legs, what a waste of talent.

  24. Dapollock says: Aug 12, 2010 9:19 AM

Not a surprise statement considering how much he dogged training camp in the Parcells years (ie – riding a stationary bike on the sidelines) rather than participate. Does my memory serve that it was Parcells referring to him as “the player” and “the player will practice when he’s ready” or something to that effect? So basically, TO’s commenting that he’s actually had to participate unlike previous stops.

  25. Burning River says: Aug 12, 2010 9:30 AM

When Paul Brown was around, the Bengals team was filled with hard-nosed, blue-collar, old-school ass-kickers.
Today, that same team has a well-earned reputation for bringing in a bunch of self-promoting primadonnas, street thugs and bottom-of-the-barrel types.
Way to honor his memory, Mikey.

“Can you imagine Adam “Formerly known as Pacman” Jones …”
You mean the way he did exactly the same thing in Dallas not long before going back to the way he’s been his whole life?
I’ve seen a lot of homers before but you guys win the prize. I bet you guys were blasting TO like the rest of us but now that he’s put on a Bengal jersey, you actually believe that he’s going to be a model citizen and won’t divide the locker room just as he’s done everywhere else.
“With chad and him together (potentially two #1 receivers) …”
You really have no idea what it means to be a #1 receiver do you? The QB makes his reads. On a pass play, one (and only one) will be the first option. If the 1st option is open, that’s where the pass will go most of the time. One of them will not be the first option. Period. And if TO isn’t getting the ball, he will complain. Chad’s ego tells me he’ll do the the same. If you think otherwise, you’re ignoring TO’s other 14 years of history to go on.

I know a Browns fan isnt looking at the Bengals in a condescending manner right?? Another arrest for you guys again this week. Oh and your 3rd string CB should really try to keep things classy on twitter as well. Also besides Chad and TO what loud mouth primadonnas to we have??? Every team has a couple loud mouths but the problem with the Browns is that none of your players have enough talent to atleast be relevant. Congratulations on being the worst team in the division.

    -Antonio Bryant
    -Tank “Tackleberry” Johnson
-Adam “make it rain bullets” Jones
    -Chinedum Ndukwe
    -Matt Jones Aka Slalom Chopper
also, on top of that I would like to point out that last year is over. Nobody has played a regular season game yet….but miraculously Cleveland is already the worst team in the division? heavyJ39, your criticism doesn’t hold water. From what I remember, from 1993 until 2005, the Bengals were the worst run franchise in professional sports. During that period the Bengals would have lost to the Washington Generals.

  40. Cap says: Aug 12, 2010 11:29 AM

    @db3300
You don’t know how an NFL passing offense works… The play is designed for the ball to come out on the 3rd step, 5th step, or just maybe, somewhat later. The routes are designed to have receivers coming free at staggered intervals, depending on the coverage. And the #1 receiver is not always assigned the route that comes free on the 3rd step.

What has Matt Jones, Tank Johnson, Ndukwe or Adam Jones ever said to make them “Loud mouths”?? Have they gotten into trouble? Yes (except for Ndukwe, not really sure where he fits in to your argument) … Never did I say the Bengals didnt have guys with character baggage.
But thanks for contradicting yourself. If nothing has been decided yet this year, then what do the Bengals teams of the 90s and early 2000s have anything to do with this year???
And there is nothing miraculous about picking a team to be bad when a 4 win teams biggest offseason move was bringing in Jake Delhomme.

  46. hazi59 says: Aug 12, 2010 12:53 PM

Actually, the Browns biggest offseason move would have been trading for Sheldon Brown, idiot. There is a difference between players making a mistake off the field, and signing players that have already made many mistakes off of the field. The Bengals fall under the ladder category. I give Cedric Benson his props though, he came through big for them last year.
But, to add credibility to your list of loudmouths, here goes:
-Antonio Bryant vehomently sued the NFL to stop drug testing him when he was suspended for the year in 2007. Many juicy quotes can be obtained by researching his court case.
-Chinedum Ndukwe was disciplined by Marvin Lewis last year for consistenly posting controversial Twitter Updates (Featured in last years version of Hard Knocks).
-Pacman Jones…do I need to go there?
    -Matt Jones…
In an interview he was asked :
“Was it hard to turn your back on your boys?”
“You know what? I didn’t feel like I was turning my back to them. It was more that they had turned their backs to me …”
and he wonders why he was cut? Give me a break heavyj, your team is full of very talented football players…..but they probably lead the league in bail bonds & prior arrests.

Further rebuttal, Oooooohhhhhh, twitter posts, my god the nerve of that guy (who byt he way was the calss valedictorian of his high school and graduated in four years from a pretty tough academic school, that’s a faaaaaarr stretch there guy. Beyond that, I will grant you that it’s too early to say the Browns will keep up the basement dwelling that’s plagued them for years, they will be competing with Pitt for that, although I still think it will end up being the browns, although if I were you, I’d be encouraged certainly. They shoudl play Jerome Harrison more this year.
