Vikings suddenly have more than a few trouble spots

There’s a strange vibe emanating from Minnesota.  Apart from the neverending Favre watch, the team is missing several key weapons, including receiver Sidney Rice and receiver Percy Harvin.

And it’s hard not to wonder whether guys like Rice and Harvin are taking advantage of the special no-camp privileges that the team has afforded to No. 4.  Really, if the quarterback doesn’t need to be there, why do they?

It’s all the more reason for No. 4 to get his mangled ankle to Mankato.  In the interim, teammates continue to talk about the guy who may be wise to stay home, given the uncertain status of Rice and Harvin — and given the steady rise of the Packers and the presence of Julius Peppers on the Chicago defense.

why bother vikings? everybody is declaring the packers as the next superbowl champs. and we all know how right these analysts are every year, right?

  3. BigBear123 says: Aug 13, 2010 11:15 AM

Pack gets division and Bears get wild card and take underdog role to SB victory.
Vikings lose game that could have secured wild card berth with Favre throwing 2 ints and AP dropping the ball on the Vikes last posession.

Last I checked… Rice is in camp but being held back because of a lingering/healing hip problem.

  5. DrewPuzia2 says: Aug 13, 2010 11:25 AM

It is very early. And the Vikings played long into the post season. All should be well by September when it really counts. It is the second year and rookies that gain the most from the summer camp and preseason. However, Injuries are a huge part of the game and depth at all positions is critical for the Vikings or any team to be successful. Have faith Viking fans, they are deep and the season is very long.

  6. JimmySmith says: Aug 13, 2010 11:33 AM

This runs counter to all the Viking fans telling us that if BrINT doesn’t come to training camp, what’s the big deal? They had a great season last year under similar circumstances, right?
Wrong! Football will always be a team sport and as such, favoritism rips a team apart. You might get away with it in the short term but it does carry consequences in the long term. A strong leader at the head coaching position can tend to mitigate it but that is not what we have here with Chilly running to the airport, wearing women’s dresses and being over ruled on his decisions by his own players.
Well, the consequences began to show up when AD skipped OTA’s to go to a hometown parade. Then Rice decided he didn’t like training camp and now we have Percy doing bong hits at home.
Meanwhile a tough 2010 schedule awaits and if they have to go with T Jack Off, they might as well start packing the moving vans for LA right now.
    As they say, Skoal Vikings.

  8. Brewdogg says: Aug 13, 2010 11:39 AM

Because no team has ever had problems in training camp…. Tell that to the Colts. Just drop your wild speculation and all the doomsayers and revisit this topic the week before they play the Aints.
My prediction: The Vikings will win handily, starting a whole new round of “chokers” posts from Packers fans. *yawn*

  9. Bjorno says: Aug 13, 2010 11:39 AM

Man, you guys are really reaching with this whole “Favre gets to sit out camp so I’m gonna do it too nonsense”.
Rice is INJURED. He didn’t even attend the Fitzgerald/Carter camp which was non-Vikings related. Are you going to infer that Sidney is trying to send a message to Cris Carter by not attending the receiver camp?
Harvin was excused, now has migraines which we have known about since we drafted him.

It may very well be true that other Vikes are taking advantage of BF’s ‘individual status’ in regard to TC & just about anything else when it comes to assembling a football team ………. But don’t expect “Lord Favre” to give a rat’s ass about anyone else or his affect on his team ………. He’s never cared in the past ………. Why should he care now.

This type of offseason would not be tolerated anywhere other than the land of 10,000 losses. I actually understand why Minnesota fans and media are so fatalistic. Look at their life.
Let’s see…Vikings, Timberwolves, Lakers, North Stars, arguably the worst major college football and basketball programs in the country (and definitely per enrollment), wondrous political minds that are trying to tax their only assets out of town, Twins can’t get a break, Wild are terrible, no tradition, bland Norwegians and Swedes, Somalian takeover, 2/3 of the state is barren prairie grass, Hollywood fame is Fargo and Feeling Minnesota…I could go on forever.
My favorite is in the Sopranos, season 3. Christopher and Furio are taking over a guy’s club to give to Adriana since he owes a huge gambling debt. After getting grilled, the guy just yells,”God Damn Vikings! Who misses an extra point?” Furio, straight off the boat from Italy, says, “Vikings? Bet with your head, not over it!”

Certain PFT staffers wonder why they have to do the druge work while a certain PFT member travels about the country attending functions and talking on the radio. Oh wait- they have not put in all of the time that the traveling PFT staffer has- duh.
Why is it when ever Florio writes or talks about Favre you hear a donkey in the background?

  17. purpleguy says: Aug 13, 2010 12:15 PM

Blah, blah, blah, frigging blah. Peterson’s in camp, Rice is hurt, the person who raised Harvin dies and he gets stress migranes, and Lord Favre is out as everyon expected, and there are several “trouble spots”? Does anyone pay attention to the fact that every starter will be back from the same team that went to the NFC Championship game and crushed the perpetually “young and improving” Pack twice last year? The one and only real concern is Lord Favre, and Klink and the Vikes have shown the Pack exactly how you handle Favre in a calm professional manner.

  18. Albs says: Aug 13, 2010 12:19 PM

Florio, how about you actually pay attention to what each team is doing at camp. For instance the Vikings closed camp at Mankato yesterday…

  19. pkrlvr says: Aug 13, 2010 12:19 PM

How assanine is it to insinuate that these guys are dogging it because of Favre. BF is a 20 year veteran for christ’s sake! Is he gonna learn something new in his 20th training camp. Should he put even more wear and tear on his 41 year old body? Would you really make a 41 year old run 2 a days? Seems like everyone in MN gets it, the only ones who don’t are the asshole media who constantly try to make something out of nothing.
Fact is, Percy is a lazy pothead who gets a migraine everytime he doesn’t want to work hard and Sidney Rice is pissed that he’s only making $500k this year. There’s no BF conspiracy here assholes.

  20. bogmon says: Aug 13, 2010 12:30 PM

I am a Packer fan so all of this kind of makes me feel good about my team…BUT, I am under no illusion that this somehow effects the season long term.
Camp is for young guys and teams learning a new system.
The vets know when to turn it on when they need to…they don’t need extra conditioning.
As for the QB sitch, The Vikes went 10-6 with TJ and Gus Ferret so I don’t believe that Favre makes or breaks them.
I would even venture to say that Jackson is much improved having the opportunity to watch Favre in action for a year.
Love or hate ‘em, Favre is a truly one of a kind talent.
    Go Pack!

  21. sand0 says: Aug 13, 2010 12:38 PM

I just don’t buy this logic. Players have always, long before Brett, been able to be hurt and miss camp and/or games.
Vikes have a few guys out. That is standard. This same argument could have been made last season about Berrian or Hutch or McKinney or Harvin because I think they all missed big chunks of camp and practice if I recall correctly.
Just because of the Brett situation, which is exactly 100% the same as it was last year, doesn’t mean that we suddenly have to view Vikings injuries differently than the rest of the league.
Vikes players that miss time still hurt themselves to the same degree that they did pre-Brett. But if you’re hurt your hurt.

  22. buhbay1c says: Aug 13, 2010 12:40 PM

Ruvell100, you could go on forever about Minnesota? That’s funny because I could say the same about Wisconsin, or the “land of obese Germans and Poles stuffing their faces with sausage”. And don’t be jealous because Minnesota is a four-sport sport market and Wisconsin is not. Sorry all you have is minor league hockey.
You’re right all we’ve ever had is Bob Dylan, Prince, The Replacements, the Coen Brothers, and blah blah blah. I know they’re not Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer, but it works for us.

  26. packrulzm says: Aug 13, 2010 1:08 PM

Sando, the “Brett situation” is not 100% the same as last year. He was not under contract, so missing training camp was a moot point. This year he is under contract and still not there. Anybody who thinks training camp is unnecessary for a player is fooling themselves. While I don’t believe another training camp will make Favre better I do think it helps with timing, and getting yourself in football shape. Cue all the Favre groupies saying “look what he did last year” blah, blah, blah. That was last year. He’s another year older and every DC will be watching his games from last year and teeing off on him every chance they get.

  27. MotorCityKitties says: Aug 13, 2010 1:10 PM

Ah yes, attacking the state as a whole…. Because Wisconsin has so much to be proud of. The Brewers, who, despite being owned by the league commisioner, are holders of 3 playoff berths in their 40 year history, (and go ahead and talk about the Braves….the Wisconsin version of the Lakers) the Bucks, whose only championship came before they lost Lew Alcindor and were given a gift in the Oscar Robertson trade, and college teams that are annually staring at the backsides of Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State.
Outside of sports…. Well, the current hot topic in newspapers the last couple of years is the flood of sexual misconduct accusations pointed at priests in the Superior and Milwaukee archdiocese, with the kicker being that the cover-up extends all the way to then-Cardinal Ratzinger, or the current pope. And lets not forget the Milwaukee teacher’s union’s fight to have Viagra put back on the medical plan while the district is cutting teachers….. The central part of the state is mostly swampland and the northern part is subject to daily blizzards all winter. Even the people who live in Milwaukee go out of state to get their entertainment. Heck, if it weren’t for the fact that people drive through southern Wisc to get from Chicago to the Twin Cities, you likely wouldn’t have much more to brag about than Wyoming does.
Okay, no BS, when I was younger I did seasonal work at the post office. I had a package come through that was labeled “frajil” on all 6 sides with an adult’s hand in red marker. The origin of this package? Green Bay, Wi. Sad, but true….
BTW, the Packers currently have 191 more losses than the Vikings do. Sorry….

Where do I begin? Let’s see, they have one of the highest percentage gay population in the US which is bad news for the gerbils in the local pet stores, They are well known for tapping feet in the bathroom stalls at the airport. They are well lknown for electing non qualified canidates to present them in government. They are also known to be fair weather fans that don’t buy tickets. And lastly, their football team is best known for the games they could not win, like 4 Superbowls and the last 5 NFC championship games giving them a choke label.

I think it is funny that Ruvell is out here trying to make some Wisconsin is superior to Minnesota point. That is just hilarious. He’s trashing on the Gophers sports program? That school is bigger, older, and more storied in academics and sports than any college in the Wisconsin by far and away. Gophers are 6th all time in football with 6 national championships. And that might be their worst sport historically! Wisconsin’s sports history is a complete joke outside of pre NFL semiprofessional championships won by Green Bay. And I mean super pathetic.
We have more money on average than Sconnies. We have a bigger metro. We have a bigger natural area in the BWCA. We have more sports teams and professional championships in the current pro leagues as well as college (by far). We give out more degrees. More sconnies come here for our beautiful land of opportunities by far than the number of sotans heading the other way for lax firework laws and strong gas station booze.
Try to think of it this way. Minnesota is like a less lazy, poor, and stupid version of Wisconsin only with way more stuff and less annoying claims to fame. You guys may be more prideful, but it is a false pride used to over compensate an obvious inferiority that you guys clearly share with all the states you border on. You guys pull this same crap with Illinois. You are like that chump in high school that nobody likes but he thinks he’s totally the shiz. We put up with you idiots. You are all over our damn metro. Weren’t you the same putz who was screaming schism on here last year, saying the Vikes wouldn’t do anything because Favre wasn’t in camp and dividing the team, only to watch them thoroughly embarrass your Preseason Champion Packers? Twice.
One would think you would have learned your lesson and keep your mouth shut.

I just threw my hardees bag and empty soda cup along with some other trash right onto Hwy 10 as I was leaving St Paul. There is your gratitude.

I’m sure your girlfriend (a.k.a. some other trash) didn’t appreciate being tossed out the window along with the cup and bag. But kudos to you on the ability to launch a 300 lb woman out the window of a moving 1985 Chevy Citation.

I actually don’t even know why I started this debate. It’s stupid and I actually like both states quite a lot. Minneapolis/St. Paul is a nice area, and I live in Hudson. It was once a fun debate, bu there is nothing to debate. I love the upper midwest in general. That said…
Jeff, if I never hear a Soul Asylum or Johnny Lang song again it will be too soon. And Jessica Lange lives in River Falls, WI.

“Ruvell100 is just taking up for his home, which is fine, if he’s a U of M alum there’s no way he can compare Minneapolis and Milwaukee. I’ve visited Milwaukee many times and it’s not even close. Milwaukee is a urinal compared to Mpls.”

Milwaukee is a fun town, but it certainly won’t win any beauty contests.

Wow Ruvell100 you are a tard. See how much “mutual respect” goes on a Cubs-Brewers game. Chicago thinks you guys are a joke, and that’s not even debatable.

“BTW, the Packers currently have 191 more losses than the Vikings do. Sorry….”
    ——————– —
The Packers have been around for 40 more years…..nice try though, you’re quite the trickster with that Minnesota wit!
    =====================================
So that matters when comparing losses, but not “championships” and HOFers? Interesting…….

  57. Brewdogg says: Aug 13, 2010 5:58 PM

First of all, thank you to everyone who jumped to point out that the Packers have more losses because they have been around longer. I was sure there would be enough of you that would not have the forward thinking to see the replies come in about everything you brag about being for the same reason…. Sorry, just playing a little verbal chess with you.
As for the rest of it…. Does anyone get the point? Does Wi have things to be proud of? Yes, of course. Does Minnesota? Yes, of course. The act of attacking a state as a whole is idiotic. I stooped to that level to get the hot-blooded people going about this and that so everyone could see how pathetic it was.
So, back to the subject. The 2010 NFL season…..

Well said Brew Dogg. I’ll admit if I have free time and come across these types of posts, I get sucked in occasionally.

    BrewTroll – get real man…
The Packers also have 253 more wins than the Vikings do. The W-L has everything to do with how long we have been in the league.
Let’s compare on a more even basis, lets say League Championships, Packers 3, Vikqueens 0 — and that’s just since your sorry ass team has been around. I wont count the 9 other times the packers have been crowned champions.
Then you are all up and pickin’ random events in WI like MN doesnt have any issues.. I could go into them but i wont. because i realised something…
If i was a MN fan too, i’d be as angry as and spiteful as you… I mean that stupid inflat-a-stadium you have, trying to pretend you love farve after hating him for 2 decades.., knowing that last year was really your only shot…. man… its a lot for you to deal with. my sympathy to you.
    On Topic..
The vikes do have some issues in camp, name another team with its starting QB sitting out camp and its #1 and #2 WR’s out.
    ====================================
Dude, don’t take it personal. I’m usually not in the habit of these kind of attacks. The whole thing was in response to Ruvell, not my opinion of Wisconsin as a whole. But since you bring it up….
I prefer to compare the two teams after the 1970 merger. The reason being: while it does excempt the success of the Lombardi teams, that team was largely assembled before the Vikings were in existence, and before the AFL started competing with the NFL for players. There are 9 HOFers from that team who were drafted before the Vikings were founded. By starting the head-to-head comparison at 1970, when most of those players had retired, it places both teams on even footing.
My favorite Mn horror story in recent days…. There is a convicted sex offender living in a tent 50 feet from a state hiking trail. Like nothing will happen there, right? And I, for one, never hated Favre. Just because he did a good job beating us, well, good for him. I’m also not a big fan of him being a Viking now, just because if he did take us to the SB, Packer fans would never let us forget it. To me, it would be great if Jackson took us to the SB and won it. Then everyone would shut up. But the last time I checked, hell was still hot….
And like I said before, let’s revisit this topic a week before they play NO. Until then, we are all just guessing.

    ^^^ This.
Consider the source, people. Brewdogg, from my limited memory, can be a pretty objective poster. Ruvell started this pissing contest and has since called it stupid. I agree with that.

Right?????????? Suddenly the Packer fans don’t want to use their ancient stats anymore.
The Packers repeatedly crow about their twelve Civil War Championships… beating up on teams like Frankford, Pottsville, and Decatur is an easy road to glory for these brainwashed mouthbreathers.
