Gregg Williams lays verbal smackdown on Patrick Robinson

We get a lot of press conference transcripts sent to PFT from teams around the NFL, which we appreciate.  It’s a good way to keep track of what coaches and players are saying, even if it doesn’t directly lead to a lot of posts.

Then again, Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is a lot more quotable than your average coaching drone.  Here are his thoughts on first-round rookie cornerback Patrick Robinson’s play in New Orleans’ preseason opener.

“Patrick has a lot of skill but right now he doesn’t know how to play,” Williams said.  “Right now
I don’t have any trust in him. He has to take the next step up in pro football.
He’s had too much down time and he doesn’t know how to take care of his body.
Right now, he’s my whipping boy.”

We don’t have much we can add to that, but here’s a great picture from the New Orleans Times-Picayune of Patriots wideout Julian Edelman also making Robinson his whipping boy.

The title of that picture should be: “pwned”.

“He’s my whipping boy” ???? really? its 2010, I dont think that was a very well thought out statement by Gregg Williams to make to the media. This is going to blow up in his face. I see a public apology coming.

wow. I’d love to work for someone like that.
Your whipping boy? I’ll give you whipping boy.

Williams is a good coach, but he is bit of a blowhard.

Translated it means, Patrick doesn’t know how to play dirty yet, i can’t trust him to cheat. If he needs to “take care of his body”…send him to the team trainer or better yet to s. payton and get him a “lil’ sumpin sumpin” from the “drugstore”. As for Williams, guess he was “sendin’ a message” to one of his own players tellin’ him “he is my biatch”. Here’s your dreamteam of coaches, DC Greg Williams, OC Mike Martz and HC Rex Ryan…there certainly wouldn’t be any shortage of b.s. comin’ from these 3 blowhards.

Unlike most of your teams, the Saints 1st round pick isn’t being thrown in with a lot expected out of him.

    That’s not good ..

  11. Mike Daly says: Aug 14, 2010 3:25 PM

Since he’s with the Saints, Williams should have said, “Robinson couldn’t do DIDDLEY POO!” After all a former Saints coach made the term popular.

Step your game up rookie, u playing to the crowd. play for self, play for your pride. Edelman juked the __ out of u first rounder. lets see how long he remains in the dog house.

Do you people even know what a whipping boy is? Jesus, you people are a sensitive bunch.
And as for his comments, I’m sure it’s just to keep the kid grounded. He’s looked great in camp and has drawn plenty of praise.

  17. mikemcsaint says: Aug 14, 2010 4:22 PM

MrHumble, at what point do you start acting and thinking like a man instead of a little boy. In 2001 when the Giants beat the Vikings to go to the Superbowl the Viking fans cried forever that the Giants stole their plays, now the other team cheats by hitting your qb, the NFL and the refs took the game, Goodell wanted the Saints to win because of Katrina and on, and on, and on……. Please, turn your TV to the WWE because that’s what idiots like you think the NFL is. And as far as your drugstore comment, remember that’s an accusation. Favre, your qb and hero, on the other hand is a drug addict. Once addicted, always addicted.

  18. Chiefs2010 says: Aug 14, 2010 4:27 PM

I hope somehow the Falcons take the division this year..
I’ve had enough of the Saints, the Katrina talk (circa 2005), and their coaches..

  19. stefanovich says: Aug 14, 2010 4:28 PM

So… why does he feel the need to say this in public, again? And if Robinson “doesn’t know how to play” and “doesn’t know how to take care of his body,” then why did the Saints waste a first round pick on him?

  20. CaptainMarvel says: Aug 14, 2010 4:38 PM

So mikemcsaint, you’re saying the overtime period of the Vikings/Saints game was called fairly? Remember, the Saints got the ball on the coin flip and scored, so the Vikings never got the ball. Please answer, were these good/fair calls: 1) spot on 3rd down. 2) no fumble call and forward progress given on 4th and 1. 3) no holding call when Jared Allen was pulled down from behind right in front of Brees. 4) pass interference on Ben Leber – when receiver looked over his left shoulder, was the ball already past him, and was it 5 feet over his right shoulder? Did Leber even make any contact whatsoever? 5) Catch awarded to Saints receiver, upheld on replay. Was he bobbling? Did the ball hit the ground? -Sure you can have a bad call or two, but can you have this many and still say it wasn’t about Katrina?

  21. Logan642 says: Aug 14, 2010 5:04 PM

Look. Have a problem with the officiating if you want, but that crew was not the 1st crew of refs who tried to “let the players just play” in a crucial game like that. There were some dubious calls, but the Vikes got some too – Anthony Hargrove getting called for roughing the passer wasn’t a “fair” call (Favre still had the ball when Hargrove began the tackling process – all the commentators agreed it wasn’t a “fair” call) either.
Be mad. Be bitter. That’s fine. I get it, I really do. But #1 – Stop saying it had anything to do with Katrina. If anyone was going to reward the Saints bc of Katrina then that would have happened when they went to the NFC championship game in ’06 – not ’09.
And #2 – Stop saying the Saints defense are dirty cheaters. You just don’t have the facts to support that statement. Yes, McCray should have been called, but that’s it. It isn’t as though the Saints amassed a wealth of roughing the passer or unnecessary roughness calls over the season. In fact, just one week prior to the Saints-Vikes game, the Saints D can be seen helping Kurt Warner and keeping him upright at the end of that game. This was after he got his clock cleaned on what was a totally legal and fair play. As for Greg Williams’s, he’s just doing his job by stirring up his players. Defenses are supposed to come after the quarterback. Every defensive player that rushes the QB is not a dirty cheater.

  22. Logan642 says: Aug 14, 2010 5:07 PM

@stefanovich – He didn’t “just say it in public.” He was asked about Robinson’s performance in a press conference following a training camp practice. Again, he’s just trying to motivate his players.

  23. mikemcsaint says: Aug 14, 2010 5:08 PM

CaptainMarvel – according to the league they were all good calls.
1.) the spot on 3rd down – the ball never came lose so it goes to it’s furthest spot
3.) The holding call was there, as was the late hit on Brees that was missed
4.) Again, according to the league, their feet got tangled BUT LEBER WAS NOT LOOKING for the ball. The rule is pass interference.
5,) Meachem’s catch was a result of the Tamp rule from the 99′ NFCGG. The rule was changed after stating that if the ball is trapped against the ground while contolled, it is a catch.
Now answer this for me. If the league was going to make bad calls against the Vikings on purpose, why would they wait until OT when they don’t even know there’s going to be an OT. During regulation every call except 2 went agains the Saints. Were the Refs riggin it to go into OT? OF COURSE NOT. Like I said, go watch the WWE if you believe that crap.

  24. ampats says: Aug 14, 2010 5:45 PM

As a fan of neither team, I can say the Viking fans are the biggest bunch of whiners on this site. For months I have been reading how the calls went against them wah, wah, wah
The Saints won the game. Get over it .

  25. Kay Bee says: Aug 14, 2010 6:23 PM

The funny thing is, Minnesota was trying to get back into the first round to draft Robinson. The Saints found out, and stole him away with the last pick in the draft.
    Saints OWN the Vikings.

It’s just a way for a coach to get the best out of a player. Some players need to hear it, some don’t. BFD.

  28. jackers252 says: Aug 14, 2010 8:17 PM

Article from April 24th, after the draft:
” He was a guy they were hoping would be available, and Saints fans will be happy to hear that defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was apparently fired up about the pick.
Don’t tell Robinson that, though. Williams said the other day that he’s hardest on the rookies. So Robinson should quickly become his new whipping boy, allowing Malcolm Jenkins to breathe a little easier.”

CaptainMarvel you are a perfect example of all these sissified, whining, crying, and excuse-making bunch of Vikings fans who obviously can’t look at reality and just accept and admit you GOT FREAKIN BEAT! I mean come on-enough already. GET OVER IT!

  30. Ilovefoolsball says: Aug 15, 2010 10:03 PM

Saints won, vikings lost, get use to it.
Saints use to lose, Vikings will always lose.
I don’t care if the refs gave the game to the Saints, the piss poor viking ball handling brought it on….
…oh and if by some cosmic chance the refs really did decide to give the Saints the game (and professional wrestling is proven to be real competition) then I can’t imagine it happening to a better bunch of fans than the bitter, putrid, disgusting, ugly, smelly, toothless fans of the Minnesota Vikings.
They are THE authority when it comes to fans who whine, bitch and moan.

  31. clintcooper says: Aug 15, 2010 11:58 PM

Damn I’m gonna be pissed if Patrick Robinson turns out to be a bust.
Oh and btw, I used to be a huge Vikings fan, having grown up in Minnesota. I got over it and so can you Vikings fans! Come over to our side, it’s much more fun over here!

Don’t be a moron. The term whipping boy is a synonym for a scapegoat.
