Living in central florida i saw what Leftwich did last year. He was the started on game 1 for the Bucs and played well in game 1 and the after games 2 or 3 games he was replaced by a guy that had never started a game in the NFL before. The Steelers ultimately want to win games and make money. If Dixon has potential to start in the NFL someday and your paying him backup money you keep him. He is insurance against the QB thats been sacked more time then any QB in the league the last 3 years. Look at the Cardinals who with Warner won games. What are they porjected to do this year. Almost on one think Leniart can win . I but if he doesn’t the Cards would give the Steeelers a 5th rounder for Dixon.

Florio , everyone on this board just got dumber after reading that . Your smear campaign is sad and transparent . Fortunately , you failed miserably in your desire to see Roethlisberger leave Pittsburgh .
Roethlisberger is one of the top QBs in the game . He has already won two Super Bowls . He led one of the 3 most clutch drives in Super Bowl & NFL history , & has the most 4th quarter / OT winning drives in the league since 2004 .
Dixon is a good guy , but he is not in the same stratosphere with Roethlisberger as a QB . Dixon is a run first QB & those style of quarterbacks simply do not win championships . Roethlisberger will help the Steelers win several more Super Bowl Championships before he is done .

That’s precisely what I said last month. Dixon is hands down the best third-string QB in the country.
A lot of teams, like Tampa, Minnesota, Buffalo, and the entire NFC West would be happy to have him. So, let him prove what he can do. If he sucks (and he won’t) he can always go back to riding the bench. If he tears it up, there’s an extra pick to use on a respectable OL next season.
You already know what you have in Leftwich, so why not play Dixon?

You mean 2005, when Ben set a record for the worst passer rating ever in a Super Bowl, but still got a ring because Bill Leavy played well enough to win it for them, and 2008, where Ben managed to lead ONE respectable scoring drive, but still got a ring because of the play of James Harrison and Troy Polamalu?
Roethlisberger is the best QB they have, but certainly not for the reasons you mentioned. There’s a reason he was never Super Bowl MVP when the QB almost always is. He’s just another right place, right time player like McMahon, Dilfer and Brad Johnson. A very far cry from the legend you paint him as.

Florio am I missing something. for over 20 years we struggled watching great defensive performances, only to watch our offense fall short. We suffered through the likes of Bubby, Cordel, Neil, Tommy, Mike, Todd, Steve, Mark, Cliff, Kent, and David. Now we have a franchise quarterback, that’s won 2 Super Bowls for us. You’re ready to replace him with a guy that’s started one regular season game and looked pretty good in a preseason game. I like Dennis Dixon a lot, but as history has shown us, you don’t come across a franchise quarterback every day.

I got to admit Florio, I thought the same thing as far as Dixon’s agent and the near future with his contract after the Baltimore game last year..He is clearly a Kordell type, and definately can win more games than Leftwich…but after 7-8 games of teams watching film on him, he would be predictable…but he is capable of starting the first 4-6 games and having the Steelers D refreshed..

Dixon will get first team reps the remaining preseason. It was one game and it was against the lions whos first team secondary is horrible let alone 3rd/4th string guys.
I doubt the Steelers are afraid of Dixon’s agent saying anything, and they def. want Dixon to get better and succeed as a QB. That one paragraph is absolute garbage and makes no sense.
The real story should be about Isaac Redmond playing well enough to take Mendenhall’s job. I personally don’t trust Mendenhall and his spinning off contact every down. He’s talented but makes to many mistakes. He is NOT the future RB of the Steelers.

He takes off running at the first sign of pressure, even with receivers open down field. You can’t win in the NFL doing that. Eventualy teams will put a spy on the QB and completely take away the run.

The article was pretty good until you started with your feelings and Steelers conspiracy theories. Dixon may start the first game of the year or Leftwich may be on a short leash because Dixon is on the sidelines.
The only reason that Dixon may not play is because the Steelers place lots of importance on regular season experience. Leftwich has lots of that. As a Steelers fan, I would be happy with either one though you do bring up a good point about quarterback survivability with the play of Steelers offensive line.

This statement is as bad as the run-on paragraph in which it appears. Sure, that’s what teams do all the time, right? Sign on guys they don’t really want to play just to waste a roster slot on them, and not play the guys they think give them the best chance of winning.
If you want to be taken seriously, things like this are not going to help.

Leftwich is immobile and takes longer to deliver the ball than Tebow did before he started changing his delivery. Dixon is green but he has raw talent. I think Dixon would be the better option overall…he was great (heismann frontrunner) before he blew out his knee…give him a chance with the first team and see what the kid can do

You made a better case for elevating Jonathan Scott than Dixon. Yes, Dennis made an excellent showing against the third-team defense of the Detroit Lions. But let’s see him against the first-team defense of the Giants before we get giddy.
Dixon starting and shining in Roethlisberger’s absence would be a win-win for the Steelers. As long as both are securely under contract, having TWO talented young QBs is a gift because one–in all probability Dixon–would become a valuable trade asset.

Dixon played well, he read the defense OK, but he missed alot of plays because he was not happy about his receivers and he depends on his legs too much. He has to get more confidence in his players. He is still inmature

Ben is 5 years younger than Mcnabb. Also, Ben is 28, Dixon is 25. Not like we have a mid 30′s QB and a young 20′s guy here. Finally, Kolb was essentially a 1st round pick, Dixon was a late 5th rounder.
What kind of f’ing moron would forgo the opportunity win multiple titles over the next 10 years in order to keep a back-up (currently 3rd stringer) happy?
