In first NFL game, Tebow reverts to college form

spt-100815-tebow.h2.jpgAt the Senior Bowl, former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow caught plenty of criticism for a slow, looping release.  And so he retreated to the football lab, fired up the P.R. engine, and emerged for his Pro Day workout with a new, compact throwing motion.

He wowed scouts and the media with his improvements, prompting some to simply ignore the reality that years of muscle memory and repeatedly reinforced instinct can’t simply be wiped away.  The concern in some circles was that, once Tebow gets into a game situation, he’ll revert to his old form.

And, in his preseason debut, Tebow reverted on numerous occasions to his old form.

He did it initially on a beautiful deep pass that was dropped by a wide-open Matthew Willis.  Though the Leftwich-style windmill didn’t hurt Tebow on that play, the dangers surfaced later.

For example, he was nearly stripped from behind when he dropped the ball down, and the half-second of telegraph time nearly resulted in an interception.

Also, he simply couldn’t get off a throw while being chased; he started into the catapult windup while rolling right, and he had to abort in order to avoid getting hit.

We’re not saying he’ll never be able to change his throwing motion, but he still has a long way to go to make the window dressing that made him into a first-round pick stick.

The good news?  Tebow only uses the slow windup when firing something other than a short pass.  And he showed decent accuracy with his old motion, ultimately leading the Broncos to a garbage-time touchdown, albeit taking the kind of lick that he likely won’t survive if it happens on a regular basis.

Yeah, Florio, and Usian Bolt runs with an unusual stride and only manages to win his races by fractions of seconds. Sooner or later it’ll catch up with him.

Give him time…too soon to tell if this will plague his career. This is what pre-season football is all about.

Were you not watching when he rolled to his right and while on the run, threw a strike 20 yards downfield? Oh, you just don’t put anything positive about the Broncos on your site…..that’s right.

Tebow had a solid game and I just cant wait to see all the haters with the stupid christian jokes try and make fun of Tebow now….he will be a solid QB in the NFL and tonight was just the beginning.

He still can’t take a snap under center.

Time will tell. It will take a lot of time to unlearn the bad habits. Tebow is a very fine …we don’t know what, yet, but he is a very fine something.
Trouble is, the Bonkos spent a First Round pick on this very fine something. That is not the worst mistake ever made in the NFL draft, though. Not by a long, long shot. Tebow will have his day.
But you have to wonder if it will be just the one day.

  7. shannscott2000 says: Aug 15, 2010 10:46 PM

I’m not comparing the two in terms of experience and status, but Brett Favre does the same thing when he throws the bomb. He literally drops the ball down below his waist. So, maybe it’ll work out for him.

  8. dafish says: Aug 15, 2010 10:46 PM

He and Quinn made Orton look like the second coming of Elway.

  9. Darth Gator says: Aug 15, 2010 10:47 PM

    What a duechebag Florio is.
The guy was 8-13 for better than 100 yards. Plus, he scored a rushing touchdown. He had two passes dropped or his numbers would have been better and his passes were crisp and tight spirals.
Oh yeah, I forgot, this is part of the formula for Florio – make fun of popular athletes in order to generate web traffic. Oh well, no wonder the media sucks!

  13. NagaSwan says: Aug 15, 2010 10:53 PM

I missed the game but saw footage of him throwing at camp. I have never seen an NFL quarterback throw like him before. He looks slow and has terrible posture. I just can’t imagine that will work on the field with any consistency. BUT, luckily for the Broncos, Kyle Orton has seemed to be a steadily improving quarterback. Barring an injury Tebow can exist purely as a gimmick player. Not worth a first round pick by any means, and Josh McDaniels is this year’s Jim Zorn, so they do have that mess to look forward to.

  14. CanadianVikingFan says: Aug 15, 2010 10:53 PM

He actually wasn’t bad at all, the one throw that reciever should of caught for show, and had a real bad throw that could of gone for 6. But hey, he’s a rookie, fun to watch him. Hopefully he can continue and have a great career.

  15. Gawdfather says: Aug 15, 2010 10:53 PM

Eh, 8 for 13 (including 2 drops), 105 yds, a rushing TD, 87 QB rating. Not great, yet not too shabby.

  16. bumpsimm says: Aug 15, 2010 10:55 PM

Wow! Fair criticism, I guess … This being his first pro action, I think Tebow did fairly well. While it was against 3rd stringers, he completed a decent percentage and a good yards per completion. And when you compare the 4 rookie QBs, I feel Tebow did the best. I mean sure, w/ an improved throwing motion, he could have been 13-13 instead of 8-13, but I give Tebow a passing grade in his first appearance …

With Tebow fans and Bronco fans you’re either a loyal fan or you’re a hater, objectivity is not an option.

Live by the media …die by the media…listen, the guy is a hell of a leader, he’s an awesome athlete, he’s a team guy, but he is not an NFL quarterback. He’s reached the ceiling as far as potential and it’s not enough. His throwing motion, pre/post draft are two completely different motions. Call it like it is…

  33. Jon Snow says: Aug 15, 2010 11:29 PM

Tebow’s no Orton =), but I thought he looked pretty good out there… especially considering the crappy protection he (and Quinn) were getting from the scrub o-line. Best deep ball out of all the QBs on the field tonight, and more of a threat when things go south and/or when out of the pocket. All in all I was pretty impressed and it’s looking more and more like this throwing motion nit picking will be something everyone will laugh about some day… especially Tebow.

  34. steelers rule says: Aug 15, 2010 11:30 PM

  35. richie says: Aug 15, 2010 11:33 PM

I thought he looked decent for a rookie playing his first ever NFL game. Had some good plays and some bad. Definitely think the Bengals tried to blitz him a little more than they normally might…try to knock the kid out or something. Maybe not. I thought he looked poised and commanded the huddle well. Kid’s O line was porous…and the center snapped one off his own butt cheek on one play.
Kid is a rookie learning the ropes. Give him a break. Did better than Quinn and Quinn has been in the league what, 3 years now?
Good start to your career, Timmy.

Whatever. Tebow also completed 8 of 13 (a very good percentage), with over 100 yards and no INT’s in shortened play. He rushed for a score, and had a receiver drop an easy TD, all against a quality opponent. I’m not a Broncos fan, but I’ll call it like I see it. He looked pretty good for his first time out. Way better than Bradford did last night.

  38. CKL says: Aug 15, 2010 11:47 PM

I saw his old motion a few times. Yes it is an issue, BUT…I think his awareness in the pocket is a bit more of a concern. I don’t watch much college ball so I don’t know if that was something he had issues with in college or if it is perhaps a result of a rookie trying so hard to think about everything he is supposed to be doing that he loses awareness/instinctiveness. There were at least two occasions when a guy was coming up on him from his blind side and he seemed to have no idea the guy was there. Most competent QBs have some sense of it and slide/move away. I have no dog in the fight as I neither hate nor love Tebow nor am I a Broncos fan.

  39. FinFan68 says: Aug 15, 2010 11:55 PM

I’m sure Broncos fans will be happy if he reverts to his college form…winning lots of games. He looked OK, not great, not horrible…OK. You can’t judge any player on a preseason game. Not a huge fan or hater of Tebow, but I hope he has a productive career. I may not want him as a starting QB but he is a guy I would want on the team.

Tebow better not run too much in the pros. If he does, he will not last too long. He’s no Michael Vick where he can elude most big hits. He took the hits in college while running the ball. If he does the same in the pros, he will only last a few years. Learn to slide dude. Avoid the hits and last awhile.

  42. Bob S. says: Aug 15, 2010 11:57 PM

Ran hard for a TD that we will see many more similar in the future from him. Threw a perfect 40 yard pass that hit wide open WR Willis in the hands that the receiver then dropped. Tebow in the very first pro game of his life playing with 3rd and 4th teamers looked a zillion times better than Quinn did tonight. A zillion!

They should have put more thought into their pick. This fanatical bigot Tebow must have a great PR agency. He’s a no-talent, nobody, yet seems to get his name in the papers quite often. Greatone, you sir are an idiot. No talent, he only had one of the most prolific college careers and is off to what appeared to me of a solid NFL career.
Now for everyone out there who is knocking Tebow, watch the game. He had no time all night and when he did, he hit his receivers. When he did, his throws were crisp and on a rope regardless of his arm being too low and not at the holes in his helmet. He is learning and will be an elite QB and yes I said elite. I can think of plenty of QB’s (starters) who didn’t have the stats he did.
Take the hatred you have for the Broncos out of the equation and you’ll see he did quite well given the circumstances.

For one…he did not revert back to his old form. Did you people at pft watch the game? I did he was just fine. He completed 8 of 13 with 100+ yards and a rushing td. Maybe Denver should let him play with the 1st string wr’s and that 1st deep pass he bad would of been completed. Also be did have that passing td but they called it back which was bs!! Tebow will do just fine in the NFL. Those are pretty good stats with 3rd and 4th string wr’s.

  55. Dylan says: Aug 16, 2010 1:09 AM

I don’t think that his motion looked good, but I think that in a couple years he can be a good QB. I think out of all the big name QB’s, he is the least NFL ready. He really needs to change his delivery though. It almost looks like a pitcher wining up to throw a baseball. He keeps the ball way too low, and then brings it up in a windup motion. He will lead the league in fumbles if he doesn’t change that. The ball should always stay above your chest. Keeping it at waste level is not going to work. That said, he looked very accurate, and he throws a beautiful deep ball. When you consider how dedicated to the game of football he is, as well as his arm strength and athleticism, I would be surprised if he wasn’t eventually a decent NFL QB. I still would have taken Clausen before him, and I think the Tebow pick was a bit of a reach. But I guess if you feel he is your franchise QB, you don’t want to wait around.

  56. DolfanJ28 says: Aug 16, 2010 1:16 AM

I’m a Miami fan when it comes to all levels of sports, and nothing annoyed me more than the hype that Tebow received in college. However, you have to give credit where credit is due, and I thought he looked great out there tonight. As one of my friends put it, he looked “Favre like” on a few plays when he made something out of nothing when the defense pressured him. The guy shuts his mouth, accepts his role, and does the best he can. What else can you ask for as an owner and/or a coach. By the way, thanks for Brandon Marshall Denver!!!

“Greatone” was looking in the mirror when he made his comments. To use his own words, intolerant and hateful, man this guy is one miserable person. We all understand, there are some people who simply hate good decent people. Anyone want to guess if this loser nobody “greatone” has ever done anything for anyone? While we aren’t sure how he’ll do in his NFL career, Tebow is truly a good person who has done much for his fellow man. Missionary work is not a job for the meek. I’m sure this loser nobody who hates him so much is simply a miserable person who blames the world for being a loser and most likely votes for people with “D’s” next to their names so he can stick to society and perhaps get even with the achievers in life.

  59. sharkattack says: Aug 16, 2010 1:26 AM

Tebow = (Steve Young- Accuracy) +( Vick – Agility) + (Vince Young- Deep ball)
Running QB’s always get everyone excited on their way to doing dick. Steve young was good because he stopped relying on his feet and learned how to throw (Big Mike Holmgren.)
Tebow will never start an entire season in the NFL. I don’t even think he is fast enough to be a good Wildcat option.
Also, Broncos fans are stupid. You all should be cheering for Orton. He is the best QB you have had since Jake Plum…. I mean Jay Cut….. I mean John Elway. Really, a lot of teams would welcome him with open arms (Jags, Bills, Niners, Cardinals, Browns, Rams, Bucs.) Appreciate what you have; a good- very good QB.
Even though I think Tebow will fail, Mcdaniels is an idiot, and the loss of Dumervil will kill their pass-rush, I still see a Wild-Card in their future.

  60. granadafan says: Aug 16, 2010 1:32 AM

Better to have pocket presence and leadership with accuracy than the “textbook” throwing motion. Queen Farve has the worst technique in the league and he’s done rather well. The so-called experts also blasted Aaron Rodgers for holding the ball high, but the guy is probably the most accurate in the league and has a cannon. Let the technique go and look at the guy to see if he can actually…. play.
I’m not a Tebow fan at all, but I thought he did all right for his first live action.

  61. robert ethen says: Aug 16, 2010 1:45 AM

For the guy who was considered the longest term project among QBs drafted this spring, Tebow certainly came out of the gate looking the most “professional”. If Matt Willis hangs onto that ball, Tebow has one of the top QB ratings of the preseason.

  63. RedLeg15 says: Aug 16, 2010 2:12 AM

    @greatone.
Have you ever heard about this thing… about throwing stones and living in a glass house? Has Tim Tebow confessed his Christian Faith? Absolutely. How many times has Tim Tebow himself force fed you his religion? ZERO. that 4 letter network that damn near controls college sports they were in control.
Tebow has his beliefs… Now to the thing that matters how many games did Tebow’s teams win?
Will that translate to the NFL? Who knows. It won’t have anything to do with Tebow’s personal life.
and on a side note to call Tebow’s mother a skank and refer to him as a bigot… Really that’s what you have to throw up there? You’ve never seen either.

  64. DJSlyBri says: Aug 16, 2010 2:13 AM

If that soon-to-be-on-the-street bum doesn’t drop that rope from Tebow, his stats look much, much better. It was a perfect throw.
And, by the way, if an ugly throwing motion means you won’t be successful, then someone please explain to me how Phillip Rivers does it. No one has an uglier throwing motion than him.
I do understand the concerns with Tebow and religion. If his influence spreads, players on both teams will start getting together in circles after games to pray, players might kneel to pray in the end zone after scoring a TD, and other players might start thanking God in post-game interviews. We can’t have that now.

Intolerant? Hateful? Your post above is a prime example of the very things you label Tim Tebow with! You even go so far as to call his mother a “skank”!? Why? Because they believe differently than you do on a variety of political issues? Why are you a football fan? Are you not aware that most teams get together for prayer before each game, and then after each game is over a large number of guys get together to pray at midfield to the very same God that you find so intolerant & offensive? Are you aware of the fact that it is YOU who would be held up as a pariah in an NFL locker room and not Tim Tebow because of your hatred and disdain for Christians?
You are a sad and hypocritcal little man bursting with all of the venomous characteristics you ascribe to others and in any NFL environment, would find yourself sitting all alone on the outside while men like Kurt Warner, Tory Holt, Brian Dawkins, John Lynch, Emmit Smith, LaDainian Tomlinson, Tony Dungy, Drew Brees, Derrick Brooks and Tim Tebow find their prayers, faith, and biblical message a VERY comfortable companion among their NFL peers past & present.

I don’t see this as a “hate” article at all. It seems pretty objective to me.
Yes he completed some great passes but he has a weakness that can be exploited on several levels in the NFL. Defensive backs and linebackers can see it coming and defensive ends can whack at it. Football is a game of inches and seconds.
The only way to shut up the critics is to win. Hopefully he’ll win in spite of that slow, strange throwing motion.

  72. JBx11 says: Aug 16, 2010 5:39 AM

The motion still needs to be quickened, but how is this guy a “no talent nobody” haha. He broke records in the SEC, 2 NATIONAL (key word is NATIONAL, not Conference USA) titles, turned a scrub HS team to state title winners in the state of Florida. This kid is the total package, the only flaws you will see is Mel Kiper/Todd McGay turn into huge Tebow fans.
“oh Tim you’re just too good with the ball in your hands, your like an ugh… ugh.. H-back man!” — Mel Kiper
haters and doubters, will you still be doubting Tebow (no first name needed for the greatest) when he knocks your team out of the playoffs? Bow to the master fools.

  73. nowathand says: Aug 16, 2010 6:04 AM

Greatone, I will trust Josh McDaniels’ evaluation of offensive football players over yours (though I may be interested in your evaluation of right wing prospects in Minnesota). Not everyone is going to look like Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco coming out of college.
Tebow looks ahead of where Matt Leinart, Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick, Mark Sanchez and Trent Edwards were their inaugural seasons so I don’t know where you get the “no talent” tag from.
I think you are qualified to say you find him, the only 1st or 2nd round rookie signal-caller to find the end zone in the first week of preseason, to be lacking in skills. To say he has “no talent”, though, is to take a swipe at every college quarterback that has put in hard work, that can evade tacklers, that can make reads, that can throw the ball into a tight window as two defenders collide with him. If he has “no talent”, what do you have?
Additionally, I find the message of the Bible to be that ALL have sinned and ALL need repentance for the forgiveness of sins in order to receive grace. When has Tebow acted with bigotry? Because he encouraged women to NOT treat their fetuses with hate? Maybe the ad was misguided but he’s young.
As for why his name shows up in papers, he won a Heisman. He broke records. He’s gone on missions trips and has endorsement deals.
As for him causing headaches, you do realize Mark Brunell, Kurt Warner, Jon Kitna, Gerald McCoy, and others are all Christian, too? I admit it’s crazy what McDaniels is doing, but, neither you nor I know if he will cause headaches, and I’d have to say McDaniels has probably investigated this more than you and I have.

Tebow played against scrubs…. He sits in the same position Dennis Dixon does, actually Dixon performed better. 7-6 128 yds 1 td and 6 rushes for 31 yards. J.T. O’Sullivan was 7-15 for 118 yds….
Until he plays in a real game against guys that will be in the NFL in three weeks, I will continue my judgment that he is going to have a great career as a full-back and specialty player only!

  76. BeaverThomas says: Aug 16, 2010 7:04 AM

I like the part of the game, best, when he got his ass handed to him.
One when Jeremy Miles #45 (Rook) blasted him from behind.

Are you serious, Florio? If not for that drop, Tebow would’ve been 9-14, 160 yds 1TD, 1 rushing TD. That would’ve trumped what every other “Pro-Style, Quick-Release, Non-Windup, Prototypical, Rookie QB” ended up doing. He was essentially running for his life and managed to hold his composure. Yes, he was playing against the 3rd string D but he was also playing with his 3rd string O. Brandon Lloyd and Eddie Royal looked sharp and probably would’ve helped his cause…..get off the guys back and find someone else to pick on. I’ve seen plenty of positive reviews from analysts that actually played pro football.

What I really find hilarious are all those who hate him not because of his talent, or perceived lack of it, but they hate him for what he stands for. Best part is, he doesn’t care. The Bible says Christians will “be persecuted” for their stance on Jesus’ behalf. Some of you really need to try reading God’s Word before it’s too late. 85. The Tire Slasher says: Aug 16, 2010 8:24 AM

If you mean Tebow “reverted to his old form” by throwing accurate passes, moving the chains, driving the ball down the field, making things happen, and putting points on the board, then you would be spot on, Florio.
His mechanics are completely irrelevant. Some of the greatest QB’s in the history of the sport had unorthodox deliveries. Changing his throwing motion would be a monumental mistake.
This guy is the real deal. Make no mistake about it. First game as a pro and he was clearly head and shoulders above virtually everybody on the field, starters included, especially the starting quarterback for the other team.
In two or three years this guy will be the Broncos starting quarterback and a bona fide NFL icon.
    Deal with it.

He looked just fine. First ever play at the NFL level. Where’s all the stories about how brutal Claussen was or how brutal Quinn was. Just have to take a guy, who had an overall very good beginning, and find major fault. Claussen has just as bad of a throwing motion and nobody bashes him consistently. At least Tebow has enough character to try to work on it.
Also, I find it funny that Tebow was set up to fail no matter how good he played. If he plays good everybody says it was against the 3rd stringers so who cares. If he plays bad they jump all over him too. Funny, Dixon played solid against the Lions third stringers and everybody says he should be starting. Don’t think he would have done any better than Leftwich if he had to play against the starters. But I guess that’s the media double standard again.

You people need to check your history and see some of the wild throwing motions that have been a part of the NFL. The kid has potential, and don’t give me that crap about he’s a first round pick. Before owners and GMS got so concerned about money most first round QBS didnt see any play for the first 2 or 3 years of their career. So if he takes a few years to learn his playbook and become a better QB then so be it. Tebow had one helluva cross the body throw that was caught and some others that were dropped. If after 3 years he isnt what people thought then so be it, at least he’s no Jamarcus Russell or Ryan Leaf. One more thing so many people have criticized Vince Young for his QB play and throwing motion and all he does is win and thats what its about in the NFL —– Winning!

The only difference between Orton’s performance and Tebows were Orton had receivers that could actually catch the ball in the game. Both went 8 for 13, Orton had 2 passing touchdowns and looked sharp. I’m not quite sure how throwing motion affects accuracy it seems to have worked for him up to this point, as well as other great NFL quarterbacks. Tebow scrambled to the right throwing a strike across his body to his receiver 25 yards down field hitting him square in the chest. Quinn was the only QB last night telegraphing passes, pick-six, his first ‘completed’ pass of the night as well. All in all Tebow looked good in my opinion, Orton is still the starting QB as it should be but in my book Tebow’s #2 and Quinns running the practice squad. Not sure if any of you have noticed either but McDaniels seems to be stripping the team of deep threats and going to short options and trying ot build up the running game. If that is the case we’re in serious trouble with both starting tailbacks on on injured reserve after the first day of practice!

Your comment is a perfect illustration of why Tebow is so famous.
Name one thing he brings to the field, that no other college QB had?
He is a winner? Not the winningest.
He is a leader? Not the only one.
He is passionate? There are plenty who are.
He is tough? Yeah. He plays football.
He is accurate? Not the most.
He is an outspoken christian? The most.
That is what he brings, outspoken christianity. Colt McCoy, Bradford, Pike, Clausen all brought one, more or all of the above attributes to the table but none were outspokenly christian.
The only reason Tebow got the benefit of the doubt from just about everybody in the media is because of his charismatic christianity.
There is no reason to believe that he will be any better than any other system QB.
Can he be a starter? Of course he can. Alex Smith got off to a rough start and was mishandled but he has shown that he has talent and could still prove to be a serviceable starter.
Can he be a great starter? Of course. Anything is possible. If Favre has taught us anything it is that the right team around you can dramatically change your performance (and don’t believe anything anyone says). He could very well be the next Favre.
Should we expect him to be anything but an above average backup? No. Neither Tim Tebow’s nor anyone else’s will power will simply make him better. We all know he isa hard worker and wants to be good but that has NEVER been enough to be a great NFL QB. Simply believing something doesn’t make it so. No football fan anywhere should believe that Tebow WILL be anything other than an above average backup.
All that said there is no reason to want him to fail anymore than you would any other opposing team’s QB. And there is no reason to root for him if you are a Bronco fan or just a football fan.
Although rooting for a player because he is an outspoke christian is stupid. It’s sports. Get over it. Tebow took a big salary just like everyone else. For those that actually learned about Jesus, you would know that is the least christian thing one can do. I don’t claim to be able to read Jesus’ mind, but based on what the bible has taught me, making a lot of money is not christian and something a follower of Jesus would avoid. If I were him, I would donate all my money to charity and live of humble means. If you think I am wrong than you are simply picking and choosing what to obey in the bible.

Not a fan but not a hater. Do I think he is coming in overrated? Yes just a bit……..
But that being said, this is a new job for him with a new team and it will take time for him to settle in and get the kinks worked out.
One thing for sure, he’s got to get used to getting hit. He showed during the SEC championship game that he’s not used to taking many hits or feeling the turf that often.
Just remember Tim: Theres no crying in football!!!
