Steve Smith, Robert Meachem escape PUP lists

A pair of big-play receivers in the NFC South got back on the practice field Monday morning.

In Carolina, Steve Smith began to participate in individual drills, roughly eight weeks after the Ronnie Lott of flag football broke Smith’s arm over the summer. Smith won’t be ready for contact anytime soon and isn’t expected to play in the preseason. Smith should be ready to the Giants open the New Meadowlands Stadium in Week 1.

Down in New Orleans, Saints wideout Robert Meachem was taken off his PUP list and returned to a full practice for the first time since May surgery on his toe.

There are many areas in which the Saints can expect a decline this year, especially defensive turnovers. Their pass-catching group is one area they could improve, however.

The Saints’ gaggle of wideouts and tight ends are all healthy at the same time for the first time, and boast impressive continuity.
