Vikings oddly make their coaches lie about trio's whereabouts

We all know that NFL coaches often obstruct the truth when they move their lips, but it’s rare to see them do it as clumsily as the Vikings did Tuesday.

Especially when the Vikings had no reason to lie, other than out of habit.

After getting briefed by the team’s public relations staff, special teams coach Brian Murphy and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell spoke with the media after practice.  Murphy was asked if kicker Ryan Longwell was at practice.  (Longwell was one of three players that flew to Hattiesburg, MS on Monday night to help bring Brett Favre back.)

“We were kicking inside,” Murphy said, via the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Right, but was Longwell there?

“He was here. He was around.”

Brad Childress wasn’t scheduled to speak, so he avoided the circus.  Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell had a different story than Murphy.

“I came out here and [Brad Childress] told me he had the other guys inside.”

“Had they been here the entire time?” Bevell was asked.

“I was told that he had them inside,” Bevell said. “They were in the building. I came out to practice, coach said they were inside.”

It’s all rather silly.  What exactly are they trying to protect?  The Vikings should apologize to Bevell and Murphy for making them available to look so ridiculous.

Did you even read the freaking NY Times article? The point was that people we had previously thought had ALS (aka Gehrig’s disease), including the namesake himself, may not have actually had ALS, but rather were suffering serious post-concussion symptoms. So to flip that and say that NFL players are all of a sudden more at risk for ALS is to totally misunderstand the new research. This isn’t to mean to belittle the severity of concussions, but if your’re going to gripe repeatedly about something, get your ducks in a row first, please.

As a non-Packer fan it amuses me as to why Minnesota backers would believe Green Bay folks are somehow “bitter” over Favre’s position in Minnesota. Seems to me Green Bay has an a) better QB; b) good leadership in place c) as good a short-term window of opportunity as the Vikings; d) a much, much better long-term window of opportunity.
I just don’t get it. One or two seasons of this comical nonsense, sure to end the same way all Favre stories end…with a back-breaking interception…and Minnesotans believe people from Wisconsin are “bitter”? Does not compute in these parts.

Use your heads – was the Favre nonesense a distraction last year? Don’t be so gullible and short-sided. It’s all a game, and if anything it’s distracting the media and the fans from the real business at hand.

Let’s just face it. The Vikings aren’t an elite training camp or preseason team. We saw it with the Loveboat. We saw it with Favre twice. This is a team that just doesn’t dominate camp like some others. They are the Lions of training camp.
But come regular season they’ll be very good on Sundays. Man I’m excited. I knew he’d come back but it is still a relief to hear it from the horse’s mouth.
And LOL at comments about how dysfunctional the organization is. Last year people said the same stuff. That is outside looking in stuff. This is a tight team that is typically very well prepared come sundays.

The Packers are a joke of a franchise. Long gone are the days where they could actually claim to be winners yet they like to reminisce about how good it USED to be. Anyone who knows football knows the Packers are a mere shell of what they used to be and know how far they have fallen from grace. The Vikings have emerged as the NFC North Beasts and there is nothing that can be said against that. Packers…pfft…just a bunch of fans trying to convince themselves that they are on top. Bunch of losers!

Wondering why they made the assistant coaches look like fools (or, as in Bevell’s case try to)?
How about because the ship is taking on water and the Captain has lost the confidence of his crew?
Why did they send Hutch and Allen down if this was about his ankle? Why not just call and ask how he’s feeling? “What kind of time frame do you think till you’re in camp?”
You don’t really think they would be down there going “Please, pretty please.” do you?
They went down to make it very clear, the wheels are coming off the wagon, the teams falling apart, and if you don’t get your ass in here now and help us by being a leader then don’t come back. Retire.
If the Vikings don’t get off to a fast start, this will all blow up faster than Kirstie Alley in a candystore.

  82. mikemcsaint says: Aug 17, 2010 8:19 PM

This is better than any daytime soap opera. Think about it. A coach who has no backbone, a diva qb who can’t make up his mind, a team of players who are lost without the diva, and a fan base that is hanging on to hope that one day they might rise from the ranks of those who have never tasted the fruits of reaching the pinnacle all the while bashing their brethren from Green Bay who have won 4 Superbowls. If someone tried to sell this to a hollywood studio as a script they wouldn’t buy it because it’s too unbelievable. The biggest joke of an organization in all of professional sports and anyone looking at this objectively would agree.

You are one dumb son of a b!tch. First you rip what has happened in GB the past two years. Then you say the fact MN has not won a SB doesn’t matter because it is in the past. Clearly your mother dropped you on your head when you were a young child……multiple times……..on purpose……..probably because you’re so ugly.
Stupid and ugly…..that’s a tough combination for you.
Sorry jacka$$…..but the Pack are legit—-finished the year 7-1 and they have the best young QB in the league. You…..have the aging prima donna who needed THREE teammates to fly down to Mississippi to beg him to come back. The guy is a pathetic jerk.
    You deserve him Viking fans.

The media lie everyday (please see Favre’s retirement last week).
Its a game on and off the field kids.

That was just right on. I still think the best part about the Vikings is the WAY they blow their games. Even when they have a good team…….they still suck.
And their fans are so stupid.

Please…..you cannot be that stupid. You think the media lied? You clearly do not have a clue about the dishonest pr!ck who is your QB. He scammed the organization for another few million bucks by pretending to “retire” again. Next time you speak up……please don’t make such an utter jacka$$ out of yourself.

With only one difference? Vikes will win the division, again thrash the packers twice but this time win the SB. I bet a lot of that packer cheese turned “green” with today’s announcement…….and i could give a shit about the vikings, they are just the better team in the division for sure and like other nfl fans, i get so tired of the sconie rednecks who can’t make a post without some perverted sexual innuendo.

after hours, days, weeks of crying Favre comes back, what a surprise. No harm done really….
Except for those very actions, Childress proclaimed “Favre, without you, our entire team is crap.” By the time Interception/fumble king finally does retire I am sure Childress will have finally succeeded in making the rest of the team believe “they actually are crap without lord Favre”

  90. jebdamone says: Aug 17, 2010 8:59 PM

all you douche turds were talking last yeah too about schisms and drama during training camp, saying that it would kill the vikes but as i recall we made it to the NFC championship game. the truth is, the organization does things how they want and don’t give a shit what is in the news, or how anyone else would do it. i appreciate that.

he brought you great joy by being a part of the reason your sorry ass Packers were able to weasel into the playoffs with a wild card spot? Cause surely the Packers would have been in were it not for an old #4. Is that your argument? If so, glad you had fun sitting on the coach and watching the Vikings instead of the Packers.
    ————————————————————-
I guess I’m being presumptuous for thinking there’s something newsworthy about NFL concussions being linked to a potentially fatal condition.
    Here, read this:
“More significantly, both doctors said, the finding solidifies a long-suspected connection between A.L.S.-like motor disease and head trauma experienced in collision sports and combat. ”
    That’s a very big deal.
Meanwhile Florio, and presumably you, thinks that putting a poster on the locker room wall represents unprecedented attention by the NFL to the issue of concussions.

packer fans will have to get back to me after your QB wins a playoff game….i searched all over the internet and could not find one on his resume.
all you have to fall back on are your SB wins from back when it was a 12 team league and linemen were 200lbs….job well done boys.
now i need to go on probaseballtalk.com and brag about the Twins world series wins in 87 and 91 i.e. packer fan logic.

I think these people are funny, I chuckle that they believe everything the media says. So, Brett has done what this year to try to get attention? Ya hear all these things on espn, on nfl network, and sites like this, of what they heard from this person, or un named informants, and some people actually believe that? lol. If I sat on your front lawn for months every year, for a few years, and wrote non sense you never said, or did only based on what people that I think knows you had said, and reported it too the entire world day in, and day out, even when there isnt a story,,,the world would hate you too.

    _____
    where to begin……
the qb situation – well rodgers has never won anything so thats pure opinion on your part to think he’s better than favre. incidently favre has plenty of playoff wins and a ring.
leadership in place – who is leading that packer team? they don’t have a hall of famer on their team, they have a bunch of guys who were close to the sb (with favre leading them) and thats it. big mac mccarthy has made some very questionable decisions since he took the reigns and haven’t the packers publicly stated they’re losing money hand over fist? that leads me to your last point about their future. if they can’t get out of the hole they’re how do you expect them to bring in free agents or hang on to their current stars?
