Niners bid farewell to Brandon Jones

The San Francisco 49ers, picked by many to make the 2010 season a memorable one, are having an August to forget.

In less than a week, the team’s 2009 third-round draft pick (running back Glen Coffee) has quit the game and its 2008 first-rounder (defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer) was shipped to Seattle after he went AWOL from camp.

Now, receiver Brandon Jones has been cut, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

Jones arrived from the Titans in 2009 via a five-year, $16.5 million contract with a $5.4 million signing bonus.  A broken shoulder suffered while diving for a pass in training camp knocked him out until October.  Once healthy, he languished on the depth chart, catching only one pass for 18 yards last year.

As Barrows points out, Jones is best remembered for a punt-return blunder against the Seahawks.

He instantly becomes a free agent.  The Titans possibly could be interested in bringing him back; his best season came in 2008, with 41 catches for 449 yards.

Must be keeping NO CATCH Ginn!!! I watched that game & Ginn still can’t catch!!! Good riddance!!!

Another fantastic barometer of the weak puke niner ownership and front office.
Singleberry, another amaaaaazing decision, (they got him 3 weeks before Shanny, Gruden, Holmgren AND Cowher were all on the market), will be gone after this year. Jimmy Raye lives in 1995, and they have a bust QB to back up their…..bust QB. Top that off with fans that still think it is nineteen EIGHTY five, and you have a pretty lame situation over here across the bay.
How’s that fictional funding for the imaginary stadium in Santa lara coming? I can’t wait to see them eventually punt on that one, and waste untold millions more chasing unicorns.
    Still no dysfunction Florio?

Whoa! Simple-tary is either gonna win the super bowl or get fired after all of this.

  4. Kevin C says: Aug 18, 2010 6:47 PM

Good for him. Nobody wants to play for the Whiners anyway. Go sign with a team that has a chance at post-season play.

  6. youngtorice says: Aug 18, 2010 6:54 PM

good riddance. Florio you are just a plain pinhead. An offseason to forget? Balmer sucked big time! Coffee Was never going to be a Frank Gore caliber back. Brandon Jones has been a complete joke. If you ask me they are trimming a lot of fat. Adding Brian Westbrook puts another weapon on offense, provides a change of pace back and an outstanding receiver out of the backfield. If you ask me they are making a strong statement!

  7. hrmlss says: Aug 18, 2010 6:55 PM

    Seattle will sign him.

Seriously, this site is full of the biggest loud-mouth, know-nothing joke fans that the world has ever seen. You’re probably the same idiots posting racial slurrs and asinine statements all over youtube.
Florio, your site is great but your commenters are monkeys!
This post is absurd though, this August isn’t one to forget. Glen Coffee retiring was surely a shocker, as everyone saw potential in him, but Balmer was nothing short of a disappointment and Brandon Jones was a terrible signing in the first place. The Niners have had too many receivers for a couple years now.
Say what you will about Singletary, but the man runs a tough camp, it is clear who can handle it and who can’t. He is simply cutting out the sissies.
And for all you Alex Smith haters, this is his one true year with a returning OC, and stability on the roster. After this season you can judge, but all else can be debated.
    Good riddance, morons.

  12. In & Out Burger says: Aug 18, 2010 7:08 PM

Whatever moves the Niners make they are still better now and historically than the Oakland Raiders. The fact that JSpicoli and others keep pulling for the Niners to be the NFL’s joke is absurd to the point of comical. Last post JSpicoli made he lectured the Niners on how not to have first round busts. I know that Oakland isn’t know for its education system but he can’t have forgotten the recent first round busts from his own team. He makes fun of our head coach, who has a winning record so far, while his own coach may have punched another member of his own staff.
I appreciate the city of Oakland, I really do. WIthout it San Francisco would be filled with the poor and ignorant alike, but JSpicoli and others like him need to stop spending all their time rallying on minute Niner news and focus on their own teams, or going back to school and getting that High School diploma.
Btw we all saw this move coming. Crabtree, Morgan, Hill, Ginn, Williams, and even Ziegler are all more talented than Jones. Plus Jones was complaining about playing time. He didn’t do it wideout in the open, for which we all thank him, but he didn’t want to sit on the bench and we have better guys to take his place.

  13. upriverLMB says: Aug 18, 2010 7:09 PM

Another fantactic McClueless signing. Seattle or Oakland would be a good landing spot for him. Scratch Oakland, He is not in his late 30′s and doesnt have enough 49er superbowl rings

It’s not like the 49ers ran off with you old lady or kicked your dog.
    geez.
The guy who traded for him is gone to seattle.

  15. habibfromnewdehli says: Aug 18, 2010 7:12 PM

They signed a receiver from the TITANS? The Titans haven’t had a real receiver since they drafted Vince Young.

  16. Sactown49er says: Aug 18, 2010 7:12 PM

Exactly.. WHO? This guy hasn’t done anything. AND he has a strained hamstring as we speak. We are trimming fat. Singletary is gettin us in the playoffs this year. All you Niner haters seem to know alot about what’s going on out here for you to be haters.. Notice you don’t even talk about ur team… Lol
and you wanna say the Oakland side of the Bay ain’t trash? Please maybe if your players weren’t out kickin it with all the gangster rappers in the crime-ridden hell hole of East Oakland u might win some games… Oh yah I forgot you need that dimented retard big Al to go away too lol

  17. raiderrob21 says: Aug 18, 2010 7:16 PM

    @youngtorice
LOL are u serious? Westbrook? Hes so good even the Lions and Rams said no thanks! Hes a walking concussion. And 1 trip and fall that injury prone SOB is out for the year ankle shoulder hip knee what else is injured on him?

  18. hendeeze says: Aug 18, 2010 7:18 PM

McCloughan signed him because Issac Bruce was retiring. And nobody in their right mind thought Al Davis was gonna pick DHB. The rest is history.

  19. Jack Acid says: Aug 18, 2010 7:31 PM

I am officially impressed with the sudden clean-house mentality of this front office.
Brandon Jones was a wasted signing by McCloughan and he struggled to move up the depth chart. Baalke is just taking out more of his trash (Balmer too).
With the addition of Ginn and strong camp from Dominique Zeigler, this move makes complete sense.
Way to keep it lean! Perform or get lost, I love it.

  20. Hawkfan50 says: Aug 18, 2010 7:38 PM

49′ers should hire Jim Mora Jr. to be their next coach after Singletary is fired after this year . Ask him to bring along Knapp as his OC …

  21. NinerNation says: Aug 18, 2010 7:39 PM

I’m going to laugh when the Raiders sign Brandon Jones, and all the fans suddenly think he’s great…it’s going to be just how it was with Ashlie Lelie.

  22. TryTheVeal says: Aug 18, 2010 7:49 PM

So…Wait…..They gave 16.5 million to a guy who’s best season averaged 2.5 catches and 27 yards a game? Was it a 40 year contract?…Is this for real?

  23. FinFan68 says: Aug 18, 2010 7:51 PM

The 49ers have been making some good moves this off-season and are a much stronger team than last year. They should easily win the division and they could hurt some feelings in the playoffs–if they modify their offensive scheme to take advantage of their QB’s skills. Run the spread every once in a while and they will be fine. Coach has a great mentality and their defense looks very good.

Westbrook turned down more money from the Rams and a chance to reunite with Pat Shurmur in an offense he knew in favor of coming to SF.
    Pay attention or go away

Listen to this clown?? I can’t wait for Oct 17 when your weak ass team comes to the stick and gets bulldozed by P. Willy and Co. Bet you and your “posse” of low life felons, and babymama’s with tattooed eyebrows will have slit a couple throats to make up for that sad, sad Sunday.

Westbrook may have some durability issues, but he will simply be a pass catching threat, and a far better option IMO than Glen Coffee. Westbrook has no upside, which is fine. Dixon has upside and WILL come thru for us in the latter part of the season. Speaking of durability concerns, how bout Mcfadden…?? Im a razorback fan and loved the guy but the dude probably sprains his toe getting out bed in the morning.

  27. 4evrnyt says: Aug 18, 2010 8:17 PM

Well the real mistake here wasn’t signing him in the first place it was giving him the contract that we did. When we signed him he’d just come off his best season and looked like he was ready for a break out.
It’s a shame that he never delivered but to make such a fuss over a wide receiver that didn’t pan out is simply short sighted and ignorant.

  28. Rhapsody says: Aug 18, 2010 8:31 PM

At every opportunity, 49er fans prove they lost the class they once had. Oh I forgot…this is the new generation of 49er fans who are used to being losers.

  29. BigSuede says: Aug 18, 2010 9:00 PM

Since when does cutting useless players equal an august to forget? Balmer and Jones were big mistakes, especially jones… they should have cut him last year.
Losing Coffee was disapointing- but the guy kinda disapeared during last season and he seemed like more of a #2 RB at best.

  30. StevieMo says: Aug 18, 2010 9:17 PM

typical raider fan…likes to trash the niners about their front office. I wonder if Al Davis does the same? I would totally pick Jamarcus Russel over Alex Smith or Darious Heyward Bay over Crabtree. I hope it works out for you.

  35. hendeeze says: Aug 18, 2010 10:00 PM

    @Spicoli
I like how the raider fans suddenly show up in droves, when they themselves haven’t been relevant since the 70′s. (Unless you count the record breaking 5 int performance by Gannon in the superbowl)
@RaiderRob. Javon Walker. Ouch stings huh. At least when we signed Jones he wasnt already gimp.
Oh and laugh at Westbrook all you like, sure hes frail. But not much more frail then McFadden, and at least Westbrook can produce. Unlike your team of complete busts not named Nhamdi.
But I digress, we only have the Raiders to thank for picking up DHB. And boy do I thank you. Instead of Morgan and Jones, its now Crabtree and Morgan. THANKS! Enjoy DHB, we sure do!
    Love Niner fans

  36. OLDCRACKER says: Aug 18, 2010 10:14 PM

The Niners will have down years, just as most teams do. It’s a cyclical thing and with a little patience, the Niners will be back. The Raiders are another story.
From bankrupting the city school system to get the team back, to destroying a beautiful baseball park for football luxury boxes, to stabbings in the restrooms, to the city’s welfare morons who sell their food stamps and crack to buy a ticket to the Weird Al circus. Take that back, Weird Al would do a better job running this show.
The Raiders are the one and only organization that should move to that sh*thole city of L.A. Keep the Jags in Florida…they’ve never hurt anyone.

  37. rraider says: Aug 18, 2010 10:16 PM

The last time either one of these teams(niners or Raiders) were in the playoffs…they both lost to Tampa. niners in round 2, Raiders in SB. Al will try to buy a team each year…the cheap niners have been building for 7 seasons and still no playoffs. Both teams have drafted inconsistently. For every Willis or Nnamdi there is a Rashun Woods or DHB. jmarcus or Alex Smith………..The fact is that the Niners should be good this year and Raiders should improve……lets have this debate in 2 years when both squads should have ended their playoff droughts.

Hahaha. That is the best statement I have ever seen on the Jaguars. They’ve never hurt anyone… especially the opposing team.

IT’S FUNNY TO ME THAT PEOPLE TRASH TALK THE NINER’S THE SIMPLE POINT TO MAKE IS OUR 5 SUPERBOWLS. I DONT GIVE A DAMN HOW MANY TIMES YOUR TEAMS MAKE IT TO THE PLAYOFF’S THE PLAYOFF’S DONT MEAN CRAP JUST ASK THE PATRIOTS FOR THERE UNDEFEATED SEASON JUST TO LOOSE IN THE SUPER BOWL. THE ONLY GAME THAT MATTERS IN THIS LEAGUE IS THE SUPERBOWL. I DONT CARE EVEN IF YOU MAKE IT TO THE SUPERBOWL IF YOU DONT WIN THE BIG GAME THEN YOU ARE A LOSER WHO NEEDS TO GO BACK HOME AND GO TO THE DRAWLING BOARDS. MY POINT IS IF YOUR GOING TO BRING UP THE PAST OF NOT MAKING THE PLAYOFF’S THEN IM BRINGING UP THE PAST ON OUR 5 SUPERBOWLS
