The San Francisco 49ers, picked by many to make the 2010 season a memorable one, are having an August to forget.
In less than a week, the team’s 2009 third-round draft pick (running back Glen Coffee) has quit the game and its 2008 first-rounder (defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer) was shipped to Seattle after he went AWOL from camp.
Now, receiver Brandon Jones has been cut, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
Jones arrived from the Titans in 2009 via a five-year, $16.5 million contract with a $5.4 million signing bonus. A broken shoulder suffered while diving for a pass in training camp knocked him out until October. Once healthy, he languished on the depth chart, catching only one pass for 18 yards last year.
As Barrows points out, Jones is best remembered for a punt-return blunder against the Seahawks.
He instantly becomes a free agent. The Titans possibly could be interested in bringing him back; his best season came in 2008, with 41 catches for 449 yards.
