Percy Harvin collapses at practice, taken away in ambulance

One of the most eventful preseasons in Vikings history went from bizarre to scary on Thursday, when receiver Percy Harvin vomited, collapsed, and eventually was taken to a hospital via ambulance.

Per Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Harvin was not participating in practice at the time.  He had jogged onto the field to watch practice when he became ill.

Harvin missed several days of camp due to migraine headaches, which have affected him since he was 10 years old.  Symptoms include vomiting and dizziness.

Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

UPDATE:  The situation is being attributed to a severe migraine headache.

very scary stuff. hopefully he is just a little dehydrated and nothing more

  4. Greech says: Aug 19, 2010 2:11 PM

This only goes to prove that the Vikings players are so sick of Favre, that being on the same field may induce vomiting.

I hope all you Packer fans that made fun of him and assumed he was smoking pot and the headaches were just an excuse to get out of drug testing feel like the Dbags that you are, now.

His health issues have to be a HUGE concern for the Vikings, were these issues as severe in college?

  10. sand0 says: Aug 19, 2010 2:13 PM

Scary. They should give him all the time he needs to try to get back right. This sucks because he’s such a great talent but if the migraines keep getting worse you have to wonder if his life would be better without football.
Not sure what brings them on but I doubt playing in the NFL helps matters.

  11. YoungAmerican says: Aug 19, 2010 2:13 PM

Terrible news, hopefully he is o.k. I think everyone can agree that we all wish Percy can stay healthy.

  23. Nogard13 says: Aug 19, 2010 2:18 PM

This is why he smoked weed (weed has been known to prevent migraines and sooth the symptoms once they begin). Too bad the NFL would flip if he had a prescription, tho.

  24. Stillerz says: Aug 19, 2010 2:19 PM

I bet Childress feels like a dick for sending him that 5 day letter now, huh?
Seriously could anyone handle this circus worse than him? I actually like the Vikings (Steelers fan) but this guy is getting way to much credit for wins by a stacked team who could win them with Jim Zorn as the coach (too soon?).

  25. CdnMike says: Aug 19, 2010 2:21 PM

Wow… I feel for this guy. I’m afraid that this migraine thing might get the better of him. I mean he must be seeing the best doctors, right? He’s been to the mayo clinic and still has serious issues.
    Good luck Percy.

  26. DailyNorseman says: Aug 19, 2010 2:21 PM

Cue the usual Green Bay and Chicago idiots with their usual string of Percy Harvin/marijuana jokes.
The rest of us will be saying a prayer for the guy and hoping that he’s okay.

  27. SpartaChris says: Aug 19, 2010 2:22 PM

  34. BigSuede says: Aug 19, 2010 2:27 PM

Let’s here it from all the posters from 4 days ago calling Harvin another Farve. The guy has a serious medical issue…
And the vikings are looking pretty lousy right about now with sending him the five day letter. Harvin needs to stay off the field until his symptoms go away, being in the sun isnt going to help anyone.

  35. Contra says: Aug 19, 2010 2:27 PM

It has to be living hell to live with those let alone try and play NFL Football.

  55. craigolney says: Aug 19, 2010 2:41 PM

Percy needs to get this figured out before the Vikings allow him to get back on the field. The last thing the league needs is a kid getting killed during play or on live television. His health is more important than Favres last season to win a SB.

  56. Brentech says: Aug 19, 2010 2:41 PM

With missing the rookie symposium last year and then not making it to the team until last week this year…I was started to wonder if he was just trying to get out of practice like Brett.
I guess this just goes to prove how much it can effect him on a daily basis.
I have much respect for his ability to transition into almost a full WR at the professional level while having more success than most full-time college WRs. It really was an impressive feat.
As someone that suffers a different type of illness, but one that can crop up at anytime, I feel for the guy and hope he’s able to continue playing at a high level. I personally have crohn’s disease, like David Garrard, and am always amazed that people with these types of conditions are able to overcome the issues and play a professional sport at its highest level. A true testament of their desire.
Oh yeah, also just thought I’d point out that I’m a Packers fan.

  63. bwisnasky says: Aug 19, 2010 2:43 PM

As someone that suffers from migraines and even cluster headaches, my empathy is with the young man. Fortunately for him he has an employer that understands. Too often in the real world, employers don’t understand the excruciating pain that these cause, and the attitude is “it’s just a headache, take some aspirin and get back to work”. Although research has been great and has gotten better, people that don’t suffer just quite don’t understand how absolutely debilitating a condition like this can be. I wish him well.

  64. Johnnyb612 says: Aug 19, 2010 2:44 PM

    It’s probably all a lie.

  65. JTK1985 says: Aug 19, 2010 2:44 PM

It would probably be in his best interest to stop playing a sport/position that involves constant head hits. I dont like the Vikings/their fans/Favre/Harvin but unless he wants to end up dead on the field he may want to consider going the Coffey route and retire.

  66. Ilovefoolsball says: Aug 19, 2010 2:44 PM

he shouldn’t be playing football in that kind of physical condition.

  67. Jack Burton says: Aug 19, 2010 2:45 PM

Those Migraines aren’t going to get any better having your head bashed in weekly. I’d say this probably isn’t the line of work he should be devoting his life to. Something less physical may be in order. I get migraines often and can’t imagine having to take shots to the head and what might happen after.

But that being said, although i like to bust other teams fans balls here, that’s just it, bust fans balls, and i have busted Vikings fans balls, i see no reason to wish ill health or injury to any player. It’s only a game, and this is a young guy, and whatever the hell he has isn’t getting any better. Hopefully they figure out some sort of balance for his migraines, and he can play football..

  75. shaggytoodle says: Aug 19, 2010 2:51 PM

With someone that suffers from mirgraines a lot of the time, and if this is collapse is related to migraines and not dehyrdration. Should he consider retirement? I know thats the least of anyones concerns, but at this time but I don’t recall any football players suffering from them as frequent as Harvin, and this game is known for injuries and now more concern about concussions (which may have contributed to this issue).

There comes a point in time when Harvin and the Vikings must fully come to the conclusion that Professional Football and the head trauma that accompanies it – is probably not in the best interest of Percy Harvin.
It would be an incredibly kind gesture if people like Troy Aikman and Steve Young were to visit and, perhaps offer a players perspective – that having your health for the rest of your life means more than the game of football.

I’m a Packer fan and some of you ‘Packer’ fans really need to grow the hell up and stop giving the rest of us a bad name by sounding like idiots.

I feel his pain, as a migraine sufferer myself, I can say I wouldn’t wish one on my worst enemy, well maybe an Ain’ts fan.
Jokes aside, the pain is indescribable, you lose your vision, hallucinate, vomit. It’s awful. Fortunately as i got into my 30s, the frequency decreased from monthly to 1 or 2 a year. I haven’t had one in over a year (knock on wood). When they do occur it usually involves a ER visit with a Demerol shot. I haven’t had much luck with most medications, so usually they just have to knock me out with a seditive.
Migraines are no joke. I feel for the kid.

Makin fun of another team or teams fans is part of the fun of sports….making fun of a player when something serious like this occurs is NOT funny and shows what kind of scum there is out there…..get well percy

Never had a migraine until I was about 30 years old. They are horrible!!!! I had one so bad that It lost sight in one eye, vomited profusely, could not stand without falling over and was in bed for about 14 hours. I feel for you P.H. I really do! Get better!!

Be a fan of any team you want in the world, but we shouldn’t cheer when a person is sick like this. Injured? Well, that is a different story, but vomiting & collapsing is more serious than a pinky sprain by Ray Lewis.
Get well soon Percy, your fun to watch & I wanna see as much good football & football players as possible this season!

Wonder if a combination or Migrains along with possible concusions could be to blame…. none the less I hope he gets better!

Wow, that’s terrible. I hope they can do something for him. It would be a shame to see such a great young player have to hang up the cleats prematurly because of migranes. Get well soon Percy.
