Pittsburgh will return to the AFL

Years after Pittsburgh last fielded a team in the Arena Football League, the city is close to getting a new franchise, according to Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Per the report, an announcement will be made Friday at the new Consol Energy Center, the successor to Mellon Arena, where the Pittsburgh Gladiators once played when the place was known as the Civic Arena.

The Gladiators moved to Tampa in 1991, and they became the Storm.

The ownership group includes Steelers Hall of Fame receiver Lynn Swann. Neither the Steelers nor the Penguins hold an ownership in the team.

We assume the Pirates don’t either, if only because the Pirates aren’t interested in owning part of a team that can’t lose at least 100 games per year.
