Shawne Merriman injured, out of Saturday's preseason game

Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman says he’s ready to move forward after signing his one-year tender offer, but he won’t be ready to play in Saturday’s preseason game.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that an Achilles’ tendon injury Merriman has battled for years flared up on Tuesday night and will almost certainly sideline Merriman Saturday.

It’s tough, working my way back into it,” Merriman said. “I knew coming in that it’s a lot of work and we’d have to take it one day at a time.”

Merriman says swelling and soreness in the Achilles has bothered him “on and off for years,” and Merriman’s health has to be a concern for the Chargers, who will pay Merriman $3.269 million this season.

Foot and Achilles injuries plagued Merriman last year, and in 2008 he missed every game except the opener with a knee injury. Merriman has never played all 16 games in a season.

Too frequently, unfortunately, players who have used PEDs, especially steroids and other injectibles, have too many issues with injuries and tendon tears to their lower extremities. The problem usually arises when the muscles enlarge to such a degree that an abnormal strain is placed on tendons and ligaments. Also, there are individuals in the medical profession who believe that extensive use of certain PEDs contributes to a loss of bone density and a brittleness (easy fractures) as well as making tendons and ligaments more susceptible to tears and strains.

He’ll retire due to injuries/lack of production caused by you know what and end in the broadcasting booth within the next few years. Bet!!!

Wow, it’s almost as if years and years of steroid use has had a detrimental effect on his body. It’s a shame, the dude can play.

When are these star athletes going to realize how much their chance of injury increases when they do not show up for off season/pre season workouts?? The league should give the owner more power to punish these idiots, money is all they understand so take it away from them.

“I’ve had achillis issues on and off for the last few years, I haven’t dont anything in 2 years, and sucked since I got busted for PEDs…..now give me a 5 yr/80m 40m guaranteed contract!”

This is so predictable that it’s almost not worth guffawing about.
    Almost.
    Guffaw.

leftcoastnative – hahaha you sir are another victim of media leading you in the wrong direction. I know more about steriods than you and thats a fact and what you posted is completely false. There is only 1 steroid that will make your tendons brittle. They do the exact opposite. I don’t have the time or care to teach you but keep posting your media led lies its funny. Roids are everywhere and used by everyone cops, firemen, doctors, athletes, lawyers, plumbers, it doesn’t matter the proffesion its everywhere and won’t be going away.

As a Chargers fan all I have to say is…oh well.
I wasn’t counting on him this year, to be honest. Rivera’s defense isn’t as attacking as Wade’s was so #56 never fit in. It’s Larry English’s time to shine, though he was a DE in college. If not English, then Tucker, and so on.
    Next one up!

This comes as no surprise! Didn’t work out, even though it’s a contract year???
This is really “Lights Out!” he’s done…

as a Raider fan you need to start worrying about your own team cause the Chargers are still going to take 2 from you in 2010.

PileHighClown: You sound awfully angry for a clown. Does your anger have anything to do w the Chargers going into Mile High last year, w the AFC West on the line no less, and experiencing a pounding the Donkos, 35-3? Your energy might be better spent worrying about how the Donkos are going to finish the season with a better recored than the Chiefs and Raiders.

Good point Sourdough! I noticed this loser has something to say on nearly every article. Pretty all-knowing for a 16 year old with Daddy-issues.
I imagine him with long, matted black-hair (Maybe like, I don’t know… Adam Lambert??) and extra tight ‘Sad Pants.’

Awesome. Merriman is hurt (again). McNiell and Jackson aren’t in camp and plan on holding out (talks yielded nothing). Yet all the pundits are ball washing the Bolts to take the AFCW. Well, if they can get Clary to quit commiting back to back false starts and the wide outs from offensive holding they might have someting. Mathews did a great job of slashing through the Bears defense. So what does it mean if the Raider’s backs gash through the same Bears defense a week later? —-Exactly!

Whatev. First week back in training camp.
Let’s see how he does in the following game against NO. I wouldn’t be surprised if he holds up fine.

And all the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put the steroid-abusing china doll back together again . . .

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess it means the Raiders are coming off their SEVENTH (7) straight season with at LEAST ELEVEN (11) losses, an NFL record.
