NFL suspends Bills tight end Shawn Nelson

The Bills reportedly had big plans for second year tight end Shawn Nelson this season, but the talented pass-catcher was oddly demoted behind third-year undrafted free agent Jonathan Stupor in recent practices.

Now we know why.

The NFL suspended Nelson four games for violating the league’s policy against Substance Abuse.  This is a rare case where the confidentiality of the program worked; there hasn’t been a hint of trouble publicly in Nelson’s brief career.

Nelson reportedly hasn’t enjoyed a great training camp, but he was the odds-on favorite to start for Buffalo. Another tight end Derek Schouman is also currently hurt.

  1. Where’s the commentary about how this means the Bills must move to LA? Oops, didn’t read the byline, Florio didn’t write this one.

  2. Bills fans should start the debate now over who they should take with the first pick in the draft. Who knows, maybe the Rams will give them a run for their money.

  3. This news sure puts a damper on the Bills celebration after winning their Super Bowl last night.

  4. Wow!! the hits keep on coming..
Trent was really looking forward to him being his number 1 check down receiver. Word has it, Pete Metzelaars is at the Buffalo airport working out a contract w/Russ, Buddy, and Ralph

  5. Hey Green Bay fan: step away from your keyboard and get back to sucking that cock. I repeat: step away from your keyboard and get back to sucking that cock!

  6. Of course it would be Rosenthal to misspell a guys name
Stupor is the state of mind Greg is constantly in
Stupar is the last name of the Bills TE

  8. I am a Buffalo fan and i have taken grief from many of you out there but, geez can you cut out the nasty talk. This is PFT not PMFT (potty mouth football talk)

  9. Way to stay classy Bills fan.
Would have expected that comment from a Cleveland fan, guess Buffalo has become Cleveland East.
As a division rival don’t have much good to say about Cleveland, but at least they show up at games and support their team.
Based on attendance can’t say that @ Buffalo can you, no matter which “home” they play at.

  10. sorry green bay. we have a tight end who used recreational drugs or peds….. i know thats bad but its not like the last meaningful tight end you had that happened to fondle a 16 year old girl
its kinda funny, i just saw where a mark chmura had to register because he liked to pop viagra and head over to chuck e cheese…….
im not saying , im just sayin
btw, what are the odds you beat minnesota again this year, oh wait u didnt beat them last year

  11. Thanks PkrNboro,
I have nothing against the bills but they have no qb and tons of injuries. It’s no secret they will suck. Especially in a difficult division. Apparently pointing out the truth hurts a few feelings and brings out the homophobia. And oh yeah, I’m very willing to bet I’m in better shape than xstatic.

Ok, I am a Bills fan, and I will be classy…….it’s only too bad you don’t have a clue what you are talking about. The Bill’s sell out all of their games, not talking about Toronto…….talking about Buffalo……no blackouts……..every game was sold out last year, and the Bill’s aren’t very good, but the fans support them………you should look at attendance figures before you speak next time. The Bill’s are towards the top of the league in attendance year after year………look it up.

  13. funny how just a few days ago the Buffalo News raved about Bills TE Jonathan Stupar moving up to the starter spot ahead of Nelson. The news went on to list several reasons why and stated Stupar is so good, this and that.
NewsFLash: anyone that reads the buffalo news for sports is a moron. They favor the hometown team so much its a joke, never report on bad stories or give the real truth. No where in the buffalo news will you find something on last nights attendence. Its the same for the Sabres. The buffalo news is a joke and Stupar sucks. He got the job by default, I will be waiting for them to revise their story.

  14. A drug infraction can only mean the Bills have sold the team to an ownership group in LA and that the team will be moving next year, of course without the offensive line, who will be working as line chef at Panos, and Spiller who if you exclude his good runs last night, did rather poorly. Looks like the Bills fans won’t have much to cheer about this year.

Just to show you that you have no clue what you are talking about. Attendance figures for 2009, the Bills played only 7 games at home. Toronto did not count. Bills were 10th in the NFL in attendance. Think before you speak.

  16. @ejtowne PMFT? Gee Golly what a great acronym. Too bad Salt Lake City doesn’t have a team.
@Whodey08 was this comment “Based on attendance can’t say that @ Buffalo can you, no matter which “home” they play at.” Based on the attendance from last nights pre-season game in TO? Maybe you ought to do a little research before making such a comment here I’ll make it easy http://buffalo.bizjournals.com/buffalo/blog/the_score/2010/01/buffalo_bills_rank_10th_in_nfl_attendance.html.

  18. @bills9951 True the Buffalo News is a rag, but the idiots at Rogers (which own Roger Center and pushed for games in TO) spin the attendance info 16 different ways. I have heard 20,000; 12,000; 56,000 but which ever the actual number was they’ll never admit that it was a failure.

  19. That sucks. I really did think that Nelson could become a productive player. The bills have needed a decent TE for almost 6 years. I guess we will go another year without one.

Adding to what CJSPILLER said….Whodey08 didn’t your team have trouble selling out a home playoff game last year? I wouldn’t be talking about our attendance when your half ass fans can barely sell out a playoff game

  21. CJ Spiller:
7 sellouts is seven sellouts. What is there to argue. You said attendence was bad but your wrong. throw percentages out all you want. 7 for 7 is 100% ignorant ass

  22. @Whodey08
LOL. Bills have the best fans in the NFL. Most loyal, dedicated, passionate fans. Did I mention the best tailgate too?.

  23. @godlovestebowbuthatesyou
taking away his good runs is the most stupidest thing ive ever heard… his performance was based on ALL of his runs… not just the crappy ones…
