Seahawks given permission to talk to Vincent Jackson

The Vincent Jackson stalemate with the San Diego Chargers finally has some movement.

And it could include Jackson moving North.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports confirmed with a Seahawks team spokesman that Seattle has been given permission to talk contract terms with Jackson.  According to Coles’ sources, no significant progress has been made in contract talks since the Seahawks received permission in the past two weeks.

We’re a little surprised the Seahawks admit the move publicly, especially after they weren’t able to close the deal after flirting with Brandon Marshall earlier in the offseason.  Cole reports that the Chargers seem intent on trading Jackson and his deep skills would perfectly fill one of Seattle’s biggest needs.

It’s unclear what the Chargers want in return for Jackson.  Marshall’s price — a pair of second-round picks — would make sense to us.

Hmm. The Bolts don’t need him. They got Buster Davis fer crissakes…

  2. Hitman22 says: Aug 20, 2010 5:57 PM

That would be a big pick up for them

That this is happening is a surprise, because as a San Diego fan I am very familiar with AJ Smith’s modus operandi and I would not have been surprised if he punished Jackson by making him sit the season and possibly even tagging him next season. However, if Smith feels he can get something of value from another team for a receiver who clearly does not figure into the Bolts’ long-term future, I’m all for it.

SKINS?!?!?!??!?!?! HELLO?!?!? Please pick up….All Pro WR on the market…Uh, we could use this one!

A perfect fit for Jackson. He will stand out like a sore thumb in Seattle.

  6. FinFan68 says: Aug 20, 2010 6:05 PM

Hope the seahawks dont have to give up a whole lot in addition to his high salary expectations. The Dolphins could use a deep threat receiver (that can actually catch) but this guy is one incident away from a full year suspension…and currently on a 3 game suspension.

  7. Buck Stallion says: Aug 20, 2010 6:06 PM

    2 second round picks huh?
What are you workin for A.J.?
More like one 3rd or 4th rounder.

  8. blmonroe12 says: Aug 20, 2010 6:06 PM

I struggle seeing this guy as an elite WR. He benefited significantly from having a great QB and other pro bowl players around him.
I see this ending the same way it did for Alvin Harper or Deon Branch or TJ Housh.. He’s just not “The Man”, he’s more of a great 2nd option.

  9. Deadeye says: Aug 20, 2010 6:06 PM

This story can only mean one thing: either the Bolts are trying to scare VJ back into SD camp (who wants to play for the Seahawks after all), or they really are going to move him, to either send a signal to McNeil and the rest of the team not to hold out, or to get value in return because his contract demands are too high, or possibly to give the money in their initial offer to McNeil, or maybe they have something else in mind.

  10. Brothaman says: Aug 20, 2010 6:07 PM

Trade him. Top QB’s like Rivers can manage without an elite number 1. Use the money to sign McNeil…call it a day

  11. shanahanfan says: Aug 20, 2010 6:08 PM

Redskins GM And Coach shanahan had better call to get into the bidding!

  12. Cake Or Death says: Aug 20, 2010 6:10 PM

Getting something for VJ would be great. He’s obviously a distraction and not in AJ’s future plans. Ideally, the Bolts should get a proven player but a high pick next year would be good too.

  13. JustinG says: Aug 20, 2010 6:18 PM

Spanos would be wise to dump this Smith character off the grid or check his power. This fellow only seems interested in having things his way. When a player spites him, he pretends to be hurt through the media but it seems pretty evident to me that he is very hard nosed and unrelenting.
That approach, while sometimes effective with cowing players, also has the chance to really isolate them. Smith seems content to use every tool at his disposal to stick it to these players — even slamming his foot down on the money that McNeil and Jackson potentially forfeited by not signing their tenders. I, for one, do not believe that AJ Smith is going to get anywhere healthy enforcing these policies in this draconian fashion.
At the end of the day, you have to look at the result. McNeil, though he supposedly had a discussion with Smith, hasn’t blinked. Vincent Jackson has not either, and by all accounts it doesn’t look like he is going to. I just don’t see how you’re winning anything by shipping out your better players for future draft picks. Maybe if the Chargers paid these people closer to what they were worth they wouldn’t be in this situation.

  18. Free_Ryan_Leaf says: Aug 20, 2010 6:24 PM

Getting into a pissing contest with AJ is not a great idea. If he can get value for VJ, he’ll jump at it. Two 2nd rounders is about right. Anything less, hope you saved some cash VJ, because AJ will sit on rights just to prove who really has the power.

  19. Cake Or Death says: Aug 20, 2010 6:25 PM

    JustinG:
It’s Spanos who would have to pay guys like VJ and McNeill, not AJ Smith.

With only Malcom Floyd, Legedu Naanee, Craig Davis, Josh Reed , and Jeremy Williams at WR, and little depth and experience at FS or SS, I could see the Bolts asking for a couple of players and a couple of picks, in return.
WR Deion Branch, S Jamar Adams, the Seahawks’ 2nd round and 3rd round pick picks in 2011 sounds fair.

  21. cheapargentina says: Aug 20, 2010 6:30 PM

if we can get a pair of seconds or a first im all for da trade.
Gates is still there and floyd is decent. Legedu and buster have to step up and with matthews our team will have more balance.

  29. Big J says: Aug 20, 2010 7:09 PM

Hasn’t lived up to expectations. He had a good year last year, but he seems to want too much for one good year. I’m sure someone will overpay for him.

  30. Burnum says: Aug 20, 2010 7:23 PM

The comparisons to Brandon Marshall are unworthy. He’s not even close to Marshall. Jackson had one very good season (last year) in a high-octane offense. Marshall had 4 very good seasons in the last 4 seasons. He’s been one of the most consistent WR’s in the league in the last years. Vincent Jackson has yet to prove he’s not a one-year-wonder…

  31. BigMikeSkinsFan says: Aug 20, 2010 7:25 PM

Skins fans that want VJ, get a grip!!
he benefits from Rivers throwing the ball but the guy has SO many off the field problems and he isnt even going to play until week 4!!
the guy was almost arrested on his way to a playoff game because he couldnt turn down his stereo!!
we have had enough problems with players on our team making us look bad..lets just work with the talent we have.

  33. MagicMan407 says: Aug 20, 2010 8:05 PM

    Bigmikeskinsfan-
Have you seen our recieving core? Moss, Galloway, Thomas, Williams, Armstrong, Banks
Replace Galloway or Williams and insert Vincent Jackson by week 4.
If they did make a move for him not saying they would, but then they are a possible playoff contender. I have to agree with all the other Redskins fans that have commented.

  34. HOUSE says: Aug 20, 2010 8:07 PM

We have needed a #1 WR and he fits. TJ is a GREAT #2, but isn’t a #1. PULL THE TRIGGER!!!

  35. seahawkfan says: Aug 20, 2010 8:08 PM

HAHAHA it makes me laugh when you guys say philip rivers can manage without a number one option at reciever. It makes me laugh more when you guys say he’s elite. Did you even see the divisional playoff games against the jets. Also every elite quarterback has a number one reciever. Look at manning he has reggie wayne. Tom brady has randy moss. This would be a good move by the hawks but jackson’s recent troubles scare me. So i think he is worth around a 4th round pick if you compare what the steelers got for santonio holmes this is a great deal. GO HAWKS!!!!!!!

  36. boltschick says: Aug 20, 2010 8:18 PM

VJ is one of my favorite players, so exciting to watch and so incredibly talented. Amazing yards per catch stats which is the most impt stat for wideouts.
I’ll never forget the TD catch in the snow at Pittsburgh while handcuffed. Or the TD to beat the Giants last year. Or the one while triple-covered against the Ravens. He makes it look so easy that people don’t realize how amazing his skills are.
I will be devastated if he leaves the Chargers. He seems extremely intelligent when you listen to interviews. Wish he could have shown more maturity because he would probably be getting a long-term deal now.
Good luck VJ, I wish you nothing but great things. :)

  37. oldmanriver says: Aug 20, 2010 8:46 PM

Remember Jackson has a 3 game suspension this year, so with a missed training camp, and by the time he gets up to speed, 25% of this season is lost.
Also, there is plenty of time to obtain his 3rd drunk driving arrest prior to then.
I don’t like A.J. Smiths attitude, reminds me of those arrogant bosses that we occasionally have had, their way or the highway. But, players with off field problems seem to never self correct, and more often self destruct.
Perhaps Shawne Merriman can share his brand of tequila with Mr. Jackson. Tila Tequila it seems, would have caused a lot fewer problems.

Slapping the franchise tag on Jackson would have been AJ cutting off his nose to spite his face. The franchise tag gives a player a salary equal to the average of the top 5 or 10 players at the position (depending on the kind of tag applied). That would be a lot of money to give Jackson to punish him. Who knows, maybe someone finally explained to AJ that doing things like this to veteran players was going to turn the Chargers into a no man’s land for free agents. Trust me, every player in the league knows what’s going on in San Diego right now, and they will remember it. AJ’s actions could end up making it more costly to keep their own players in the future, and both more costly and more difficult to bring in quality free agents. No player with real options wants to risk that kind of treatment, not unless he’s getting paid a lot of money…much of it guaranteed.
