Welcome back, Brett . . . love, Patrick

The 2010 season started for Vikings quarterback Brett Favre a lot like the 2009 season ended.

With a bone-rattling hit.

After leading the Vikings to a first down with a first-down swing pass to running back Adrian Peterson, the drive sputtered, with Favre being splattered by 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis.

The drive ended in a punt.

The Chiefs applied a big hit to Favre early in his preseason debut last year.  Unlike the Chiefs, the 49ers have an unspoken competitive reason to pound Favre.  With a fairly easy schedule, the Niners could set themselves up for a possible bye in the playoffs if they can knock Favre out now.

Pretty good for a team that hasn’t done squat in like 13 years. Make the playoffs first, then we’ll talk. Alex Smith is terrible BTW. This is a make-or-break year for him.

Agreed. Cris Collinsworth even admitted the refs blew the whistle the moment Favre got wrapped up and didn’t allow what should have been a fumble. Meanwhile, they’re letting Tarvaris take one hell of a pounding.
I’m sorry, but this isn’t unbiased reffing. The refs need to call the games the same regardless who is behind center taking the snaps.

Guess what, buttercup. The more you talk, the more you assure that he will remain upright throughout the season.
Like it or not, Favre is a media draw. More people will tune in to nationally televised Vikings games if Favre is playing. Because of that, Goodell will instruct the umps to be on the lookout for anyone intentionally trying to injure him. He will threaten stiff penalties and suspensions for any overt attempt to knock him out. All this will be reported to each team they face. The result? Players will ease up out of fear of being suspended. And what happens when you give any NFL QB an extra 1/4 second?
    I can’t wait…….

OK, maybe censors don’t like 5-letter words that start with “p” & end with “y.” Can I interest you in a compound word, starts with “d” and ends in “e”, followed by a hyphen, then “bag?” Both are accurate descriptors when referring to Favre’s famewhorish behavior, lack of respect for anything resembling the concept of “teamwork,” wishy-washy idiocy as a ploy to avoid preparation, team-building, & complete disregard for fans, coaches, the game, or anything else that relegate his personal glory to a backseat in the story line. Selfish moron.

It was a nice sack by the best linebacker in the league, on one of the greatest qb’s in the league. Of course there was a lot of motivation for the 49ers – seeing as house Brett has been a thorn in their side for the most part of his career.
All of u fools with that good old “it’s only preseason” is what makes this hit even better.. Its not flag football; excellent display of intensity.
Why are so many people blind to the progress the 49ers have made with rebuilding the team? So much potential for some really good things on the field. A brand of football that promotes hard work and dedication.
There’s no way in hell u’d assess ur own team, and not have the desire to substitute some 49ers in there.
Granted, not having a winning season in seven years isn’t going to help acquire a respected image, but there’s been quite some improvement from the 2-14 seasons of recent past.
Appreciate a good re-build effort when u see one. Every franchise goes throught it, and to deny that is just plain ignorant.

  58. windex666 says: Aug 23, 2010 1:38 AM

I was looking for the 49ers-Vikings game and came across a Brett Farve blow fest, with Tony Dungy giving the courtesy wrap-around. Adrian Peterson was giving the wrap-arounds last season, which is why he had such trouble holding on to the ball.

  59. pooterqb says: Aug 23, 2010 2:21 AM

49ers won’t make the playoffs!!!! No if’s and’s or but’s. They won’t win the division and won’t win 7 games. Farve this year has a BIG X on him. People and especially players are tired of his antics. Defensive linemen want to hit Farve so hard his grandchild will feel it! His consecutive starts end about week 4 I think. Sad because if the Vikes focused on acquiring a different QB, they would have been better off. 49ers will be 7-9 if they are lucky. No the Refs are not trying to give the game to the Vikes, they are trying to protect him. I’ll give you that.

Again, I’ll say that the idea of the refs handing the game to the Saints is preposterous.
First of all, the NFL loves the publicity and a great story, both of which worked best last season with Favre at the center. If the NFL WANTED a team to win, they’d pick the team with the best opportunity for even more media attention, which would have been the Vikings.
Additionally, when the president of the NFL officials spoke about the missed call on Bobby McCray’s sack of Favre – which he did ON ESPN FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE- he would certainly have addressed the 4 allegedy dubious calls in overtime at that point as well.
Lastly, the Saints made it to the NFC Championship game a mere 18 months after Katrina destroyed New Orleans. If the NFL wanted to “hand them” a Superbowl, it would have been then, NOT 4 years later.
The fact remains that the Vikings could have avoided overtime altogether had one or both of the following things happened:
    1. They didn’t turn the ball over 5 times, which was NOT a result of bad luck or opportunity but an agressive ball-hawking defense
    2. Favre didn’t throw the interception
Be bitter if you want to be bitter, but get the facts straight.

  70. geek says: Aug 23, 2010 6:27 PM

How disappointing – a story about the big hit that doesn’t include a link to the video?! You guys are slipping – as is your analysis. Let me think about this. Any hit on Favre now will eliminate Favre for the season, hence making the Vikings the NFC North champs, but not as good as the NFC West champ 49ers, so they get a bye in the playoffs?! Can we play some football first, please? If Favre is out forever, the Vikings will be a wildcard at best and the Packers will have 2 extra wins to capture that bye. Yes, the 49ers look good on paper (if their QB doesn’t screw it up), but even if they win that weak division called the NFC West, they won’t be better than whichever team wins the NFC North.
Let’s not jump the gun with this whole take out Favre now to get the playoff bye storyline. It is waaaaaaaayyyyyyy to early to crown the 49ers. They can do it, but they really need to prove it on the field before any effort to hurt Favre would be credible in this context.
