Bears pick up veteran insurance in Todd Collins

The Bears have seen enough of Dan LeFevour as their backup quarterback.

The team signed Todd Collins on Monday morning to fill a gaping hole on the depth chart where a veteran quarterback should be. The Bears reportedly approached Collins a week ago, but it sounded like he turned them down because they wouldn’t offer any guaranteed money.

Perhaps a week of watching LeFevour changed their mind. Or maybe it was the status of backup quarterback Caleb Hanie’s shoulder. Hanie remains out indefinitely and the Bears haven’t said much about his status.

Collins, who turns 39 in November, played in a similar offense to Mike Martz’s in Kansas City under Dick Vermeil. Well, he didn’t really play. He threw 27 passes in five years, and the Bears hope he doesn’t throw many this year too.)
