'Skins sign a 10-year veteran, cut an 11-year veteran

The Redskins have made a couple of moves involving grizzled veterans, signing one and cutting one.

In is safety Tyrone Carter; out is linebacker Chris Draft.

Draft signed with the Redskins in May.  Carter has played with the Steelers since 2004, winning two Super Bowl titles.  He started 12 games in 2009, the most ever started in any year during his entire career.

The Redskins also made official the arrival of fullback Carey Davis, a veteran who joined the league in 2004.

At a press conference to announce the signings, Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan was quoted as saying … “We’re embarking on a youth movement!”

Out of curiosity, why did the Steelers let him go again?

    Wow Thats news!!!

Chris Draft was a heck of a football player for several years, just aging. Someone will need a stout backup somewhere.

and who says they aren’t getting younger?

Carter wasn’t resigned by the Steelers because his cover skills were worse than Roy Williams from Cinci. Carey Davis should help in goal line, that’s his specialty.

I was upset when Pittsburgh released Davis, Carter is a good back up, he is no Troy P, but then again, no one is.

You’d swear the Skins were a few players away from a Super Bowl with these signings.
    Seriously, a 10 year vet?
I hear Riggins can still bring it!

Waiting on Joey Galloway to get cut.. He’s had a heck of a long career in the NFL for a lot of mediocrity..

Carter was pretty brutal at times last year…but he had some moments. Defensive Player of the Week after his two picks at Denver in Ryan Clark’s absence.

Both are solid backups. Dont use Davis as a KR like the Steelers.

This new Skins F.O is exactly what was needed, Shanny and Bruce arent messing around, you dont want to compete then go find a home in Philly.

So the skins are the next new team to take the steelers scraps that was thrown away . Davis is a ok FB and Carter cant cover for his life .

tyrone carter and carey davis are 2 of the worst players in the nfl

  15. Big Tex says: Aug 23, 2010 6:57 PM

Yeah RedskinOne, that Bruce Allen is quite a genius. What was his record in Tampa? Two games over .500 for four years? Why wasn’t every other team just as desperate to get to two games over .500?

Did you watch Green Bay vs. the Steelers last season?
Edit: Did you watch the Steelers secondary last year. Want to know the culprits? Tyrone is the other one not named William Gay.

Steelers signed Will Allen this off-season and have youngster (and local kid) Ryan Mundy as their backups

The Redskins lost a starting safety due to injury they need to keep thier options open and bring in guys who have playing experience. It doesn’t seem that odd to me. Likely Doughty or Chris Horton would still be the starters. Unless the dude impresses enough.

  19. Bubby Brister says: Aug 23, 2010 9:44 PM

Of all the starting and second string safeties in the league right now, Tyrone Carter seriously might be the worst. The guy couldn’t cover Albert Haynesworth on a curl route right now.
But he can lay a guy out with a hit… if he doesn’t
completely whiff on it, which happens 3/5 times.
Carey Davis sucks too. Not that bad, but he’s nothing special. He’s been on the Steelers roster the past two years just so they could say they had a “starting” fullback.

Wow! Now that’s funny. The eagles been kicking the redskins dicks in the dirt for about 10 years now. I guess 5 NFC championships and a 10 wins or more 7 out the last 10 years.
That’s wet dream for skins fans based on their competitveness the last 15 years. Nice try.

Your lucky you had Mcnabb. I guess the season before last doesnt count? The first year Jim Zorn was HC and the HORRIBLE Redskins still found a way to sweep Philly. They may not have beat many other teams, but atleast they did sweep.

  22. Mooch says: Aug 24, 2010 8:05 AM

So, if a HORRIBLE Skins team swept us…maybe McNabb wasn’t all that great an asset at this stage?
    Thanks for the draft picks.
And don’t be concerned about McNabb in a boot. Old injury prone QB’ his age always come back ahead of schedule and show no lingering effects of the injury.
    Happens all the time.
And I think I speak for all Eagles, Cowboys, and Giants fans when I say – PLEASE keep taking a hard line with your best defensive player. PLEASE take him out of the 1st team. PLEASE let Shanahan wreck this roster like he did in Denver.

@steeltownpride – Nothing is more annoying than a Pittsburgh fan that is ‘holier than thou” . If you want to talk about scraps I believe you signed Randle El back didn’t you? And don’t worry because Willy Parker isn’t going to make the roster anyway.

  24. runtheball says: Aug 24, 2010 3:13 PM

I guess Jon Witman and Darren Perry were unavailable.

Randle El was once very good and still has great ability as a slot receiver. Tyrone Carter and Carey Davis aren’t a couple of has-beens, they are a couple of never-weres.
