Childress won't rule out IR for Sidney Rice, won't move Joe Webb to wideout

NFL_rice2_250.jpgWell, the news keeps getting better for the Minnesota Vikings.  Though initial reports suggested that receiver Sidney Rice would miss eight weeks after undergoing better-never-than-late surgery to address a nagging hip problem, coach Brad Childress said Tuesday that it probably will be at least eight weeks before Rice is even cleared to practice, according to Tom Pelissero of 1500espn.com.

And it gets worse (or better, if you’re a Packers fans).  Childress hasn’t ruled out placing Rice on injured reserve, which means he wouldn’t play at all during the 2010 season.

Chilly also threw an icicle at Rice, suggesting that the problem potentially flared up at a mandatory minicamp in June “because of inactivity.”

Childress sidestepped suggesting that the delayed surgery relates to Rice’s contract, which pays him only $550,000 in 2010.

The head coach also said that rookie Joe Webb, a college quarterback drafted to be a receiver then moved back to quarterback, won’t be moved to receiver.  Childress said the team discussed it but decided against it.  “We’d have been working with a rough piece of clay there,” Childress
said.  “Obviously, he’s a superb athlete, but he needs work in what he’s
doing right now.”

So that leaves the Vikings with few options to replace Rice.  The depth chart currently shows Bernard Berrian and Percy Harvin as the starters, with Greg Lewis and Taye Biddle as third and fourth on the depth chart.  It’s also possible that Darius Reynaud could be moved from running back back to receiver.

All that said, it could be that Rice performed so well last year because Brett Favre was his quarterback.  In two prior NFL seasons, Rice’s abilities were closer to Condoleezza than to Jerry.  So maybe the Vikings will count on Favre making the next man up into a great receiver by feeding the guy like a turkey in the second week of November.

Sidney Rice just significantly dented his career. If he goes on IR, he will return when Farve is gone. The Vikings will be in no hurry to sign him to a significant new contract. Bye Bye Rice.

Move Webb to special teams return man until the masters offense better, guy is a beast in the open field.
That will take some work off Harvin’s back too.
Makes a lot of sense so the Vikings won’t do it.

Am listening to a repeat of Florio on KFAN from this morning. Florio needs to realize one thing, he knows NOTHING about football.
Florio is saying that with Rice gone, the Vikes need to go after Moss. Being a Vikings fan, I would love to see Favre/Moss but it is NOT going to happen. Florio thinks anything can happen for a price. Maybe in may circumstances, but not this one. For the Patriots to trade Moss, ESPECIALLY to the Vikings they would end up with the equivalent of 2 second stringers at WR. That would be silly to do even in Madden!
There is a reason that Florio no longer practices law. Making a statement such as above proves he has no common sense and I sure as hell wouldnt want an atty without it. Also explains why he sucks up to NBC so much. Without them, he would be joining many FudgePackerBackers in the unemployment line!!!!!

Funny….I made this post a couple of hours ago on the other article about Rice/Vikings etc…….Rice was on the bubble when it came cutdown time last year as he did absolutely nothing his first 2yrs in the league. BF has made many wr’s into stars (even though packer fans wouldn’t dare admit it) and the vikes won’t miss Rice as much as many think…….and “some” hope.

  14. ADPeterson says: Aug 24, 2010 7:55 PM

Hey vike fans, I heard there’s a trade rumor involving Calvin Johnson! Oh wow, he wants to be a viking all you have to do is trade a 7th for him…
Now how many vike fans are gonna start posting that rumor and believing it unconditional? Probably all of them. Sad really…

Vikings are now going to go 9-7…..unless they let Joe Webb play a lot at receiver or wildcat QB.

Taye Biddle? Screw that, I’d rather see Logan Payne make it. The Vikings really messed up this time, they should of went with the surgery, now he is lost for another season. What is that 3 out of his 4 seasons now he hasn’t played a whole season?
Things are starting to crumble, we need Percy to be healthy and Berrian to have the kind of impact he did in his first year with the Vikings. Keep healthy team, and keep Brett upright..

in addition to my earlier post that BF made Sidney Rice and while you hate to lose a starter, BF will “make another wr” just as he has did his entire career. Last year Percy Harvin didn’t earn ROY award all by himself…….Shiancoe had “his ” career year at TE, 11 TD’s…….packer fans will call it coincidence but all three of these guys had one Brett Favre throwing them the ball…….think about genius’s….and packer fans too, LOL

  25. DirtDawg55 says: Aug 24, 2010 8:32 PM

vikes went 10-6 and won the division in 08 with gus and tj at qb & berrian and wade at wr, rice was hurting and didn’t do a thing. they’re much stronger than that now. the sky is the limit for this team.
it’s not technically impossible that the pckers finish ahead of the vikes this year but it’s more likely that the sun crashes into the earth next week or that ted thompson marries kate beckinsale and starts eating garlic.

  28. Lurch says: Aug 24, 2010 8:45 PM

There still are weapons there … Berrian takes the place of Rice, Shiancoe catches more balls from the tight end position, and Yo! .. Adrian!! gets his number called more times than usual. Maybe we’ll even be saying ‘Damn that Taye Biddle!!!” before the season’s over. And then, there’s always the waiver wire … cutdowns are coming and there should be some talent available.
Berrian was dinged up a good part of last season, which is one reason Rice emerged and Bernard didn’t.
Admittedly, I’m a Packer fan … but I won’t pile on here – there’s going to be ample people available to do that … and, it would also work the other way too if it was the Packers that found themselves in these straits.
This just shows how tough it is to have a repeat season in the NFL … everybody’s just a play away from IR.
But seriously … it will be interesting to see how Favre reacts to this (on the field) and how it all plays out. And the bigger issue might just be getting funding to replace that gas-bag stadium with a better one. It would be unfortunate to see this team leave the twin cities and move west … so I do hope you can get that little piece of architecture taken care of. In part, because when it’s all said and done … it’s really a lot of fun to taunt you bastards.

  30. rovibe says: Aug 24, 2010 9:00 PM

Some really dumb posts here. To suggest the Favre made Rice a good receiver is stupid. Rice showed in his rookie season that he could make all kinds of difficult catches. In his second season, he was slowed by an early injury that hampered him the rest of the way. In both of those 2 years pre-Favre, he played with QB’s Jackson and Frerrote, who averaged less than 15 completions per game, most of them short passes to the RB’s and TE’s. Do the math. Not many catches to go around, especially when you’re the rookie, then the injured second year player. Furthermore, he was NOT ‘on the bubble’. I read the local papers everyday, and the only clowns making that assertion were the impatient (read: stupid) fans who thought every rookie receiver should match Randy Moss’ first season stats. The coaches never made any such statement. They knew what they had, and knew the missing piece was a better QB. And they went out and got one, and Rice proved his worth.

Incorrect. Sterling Sharpe was undeniably the best WR Favre ever had. That guy was a complete jerk but he by far the best I’ve ever seen in GB (which means since the tail end of Lofton’s career).
Driver hasn’t had much of a drop off without Favre. Nor has Jennings. I haven’t seen Favre “make” a WR in GB since Billy Schroeder, who left in 2001. I would have thought that 2005 proved that beyond a reasonable doubt but I guess not. He certainly didn’t “make” Walker. Quite the opposite, in fact. If you get a chance to watch the tape of the remarkable game in Oakland after Irv’s passing, you’ll see that Walker was plucking balls out of double coverage all night. Favre had the great stat line that night but it was the receivers that had the great game.
Don’t confuse the upgrade from TJack/Frerotte to Favre spiking the passing game production in Minnesota with Favre “making” anyone there into a player. They could play. They finally got a chance to prove it. And they did.

It must be so nice to live in your world Missus Humble…..you are right….this is actually particularly good news. Now Favre can enahnce his legacy by sending Greg Lewis to the Pro Bowl!!!!
And you Gravy…..how nice it must be to be such a homophobic naz!. You are not typical of Minnesotans. Most of them are understanding, accepting, gracious people. Yet you are this loser who wants to frame all issues as gay vs. straight. Nice Gravy……I am sure your overbearing, wife beater father is very proud of you.
All I can say is this. The two biggest idiots on this site….Missus Humble and Gravy are absolutely staggering, punch-drunk and petrified about the fact that their favorite club’s roster has been decimated with injuries and money/ego squabbles. And that the Vikes were so amazingly talented was his public excuse for the pursuit of his need for revenge. I noticed he wasn’t knocking on Detroit’s door for that.

When looking at Vikes turned stars by Favre look at Shiancoe; as well as Rice.
    Bret makes recievers and coaches.
Doubters can take a look at the Packers coaching staff from 92′ to 96′ and see that many a NFL coaches as well as recievers gained glory from under the wings (or spittle) of Favre.

I really don’t get some of you. Does it somehow enrich your life to rag on an opposing team, calling doom over every negative post and blindly refuting anything positive? Does it make you feel better about yourself to think that the Vikings might not have a good year? If it does, then you seriously need to take stock in your lives and identify the deficiencies in yourself that lead you to such irrational behavior.
Do you really want to know what Vikings fans think?
We hope that Berrian can step up in the absence of Rice and possibly Harvin, which we have seen coming for some time now. Nothing new.
We hope someone can step up at safety and protect these young corners who are going to need to step up and turn promise into production.
We hope that there is still some of that magic that turned Lowdermilk, Christy, and Birk into PBers leftover for Sullivan…he needs it.
We hope that Peterson will stop fighting for that extra yard he doesn’t need when he gets stopped and stood up, so maybe the third and fourth guy there won’t have the chance to strip him. It’s such a curse to have a RB that doesn’t go down on the first hit…..
And we hope that Favre can remain standing and not make that last stupid mistake. It’s a chance we take, because whatever you want to say about the guy, you know that when the game is on the line, everyone in the huddle believes he will find a way to pull it out. And THAT is the mark of a great QB…. A quality we have respected and dreaded from him for over the years, because it was so often turned on us.
Now I dare any of you pathetic yappers (I exclude the few who have proven to be objective and honest about both sides) to list the shortcomings and concerns on your own team. If you don’t see any, than you really have nothing worthwhile to say.
(PS, if you believe that a 41-yo QB can’t repeat a career season, what makes you think a 35-yo CB can? Just asking…..)

I should think that would be obvious, given his disdain for Ted. Come on man, Viking fans LOVE Ted! After all, where would their team be without him? Certainly not holding the division titles they still think have some sort of relevance or meaning (hilarious).
Ted has worked wonders for the Viking franchise. Their fans would never say anything bad about him. PACKER fans are the ones that hate Ted.
Gravy is like that “Bring Back Culpepper” guy that was on here last season. He just poses as a Viking fan, and then makes the most ignorant statements possible so as to give the rest of the purple faithful a bad name. As you can see, it works pretty well too.
The REAL joke here, however, is on Contra and Pervy for actually taking the Gravy facade seriously and agreeing with all of the deliberately ignorant statements. Of course, nearly every joke in these threads is at Pervy’s expense, but I still get a kick out of that particular one every time.

Now here comes your post where they win it all 2 out of the next 3 years.
All the while castigating me for making my own predictions.
Come on. Do that that little thing where you re -arrange words in my post. That is so utterly brilliant!!

losing in the first round is hardly satisfying. But I understand the method of team building they are doing in Green Bay. They will win it all in one of the next two seasons. Their method takes a little longer then the fantasy football, mortgage your future for one shot at it method. But, it makes you good for a long time.

I’m sorry.. Did you miss our playoff loss last season? Or our one win in the previous five years?
Being satisfied with failure is for Viking and Lion fans. If you weren’t much too young to remember the ’96 season, you’d know what it’s like to see your team actually win something, and how great that is.
Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. Sadly, Ted’s teams don’t do a lot of it.

Man alive you people should work for the mainstream media! It’s one player and one player does not make an entire team. Sure he’s an impact player but someone else will step up and fill the gap- that’s how team sports work. Glenn Beck, watch out man, the PFT talking heads are coming for your sensationalist job!

so the vikes losing in the WC in 08 and foloowing that up with losing in the NFCCG isn’t team building? That’s 1 shot? That they are mentioned in the top 4 teams this year also is mortgaging the future?
Your argument has been batted down so many times, by both packer and Vikings fans.
How are the steps the Vikings have taken in the last 2 years any different than what you proclaim the packers are doing?
Funny, Minnesota has actually taken a next step.
You are PREDICTING the pack takes that step, but you don’t know.
It’s just your typical double standard homerism shining loudl and brightly…as always.
Vikings haven’t mortgaged annything. They have 1 of the bst capologists in the game. They are set up to be playoff caliber for the foreseeable future.
Vikes have improved yearly by 2 games, they are taking steps. Answer how it is soooo different with the Pack.
    You can’t.

easy. Childress WILL lose that locker room. probably this year. You cannot behave like that as a head coach at any level.

    Lame attempt.
You know nothing about coaching except for running a beer league softball team.
which is basically filling out a line-up.

I see that not a single Packer fan has risen to my challenge. Not a single trash-talking homer in green and gold has the balls to admit that his team has faults. They are more than willing to amplify faults on the Vikings team to the point of being ridiculous, but can’t find a single thing wrong with the team they watch every week.
    Why do I bother?

your challenge is just that. Challenging. It is difficult to find any weakness in this carefully constructed team built by the Steady One. Pass rush maybe. New punter. Thats about it brother.

Harris out for a bit but we have Tramon Williams so were good there
Hawk needs to play better. Period. Or ship him
Tauscher and Clifton are fine tackles and we have a good one that The Steady One drafted
Driver and Woodson have shown no signs of slowing down. Both are more then 5 years younger then favre. And they are in better condition then Favre
    TT is our Gm. EXACTLY!!!!

Williams was part of that vaunted bunch that gave up over 500 yards to the Cards in the WC game.
Hawk hasn’t been any good since he got there. He should have been gone already.
Your 2 tackles are beyond fragile, and need Bulaga start at LT, well rookies ALWAYS work out well at that position……not.
Driver is ancient for the WR position, you know this. No one behind him to step up either, unless 20 and 30 catches is what you are looking for…
Woodson- yes, great last year. With Harris out, they just won’t throw to his area ala Arizona.
34-35 year old Corners are not what you exactly want. Just tell yourself it’s all going to be ok.
TT is your GM exactly! Thank god, This nit wit is your problem.

Williams has proven about as much as Asher Allen has. Looking for a little consistency…..
Anybody who needs to “…play better. Period. Or ship him…” on the Vikings roster causes you to call doom and gloom on the entire season. Looking for a little consistency….
Tauscher and Clifton are fine tackles…when healthy. If a Vikings player had the kind of health problems that they have had recently and were in their mid-30s, you’d be predicting them to be hurt by week 6 and doom and gloom on the season. Looking for a little consistency….
The only other 3 OTs drafted in the first round by the Packers in the last 50 years were John Michels, Tony M, and Mark Koncar. Before you jump on the different Gm and staff and all that, ask yourself honestly if that would matter if we were talking about the Vikings. Just looking for a little consistency….
Driver has actually steadily decreased in receptions each of the last 3 years (92, 82, 74, 70) and Woodson had career highs in INTs and TDs, and second highest posting in tackles and passes defensed, a season not likely to be duplicated. Should we then assume that, based on your defense of these two players, that Hutch, Pat, and Winfield will be their old PB selves this year? Just looking for a little consistency….
And you forgot to mention the problem area between your tackles, which has been a problem for years. And before you say that they are good and aren’t a problem, ask yourself…. Considering the age and health problems mentioned earlier, why would the heir apparent be asked to move inside instead of focusing on the position where he may be needed as early as this year?
And if the Vikings projected #3 and #4 WRs had COMBINED for 107 rec, 1400 yds and 10 TDs in the last 2 years (or an average of 27, 350, and 2.5 per player per year), what would you say?
And if the Vikings had the kind of legal/injury/1st rd bust issues that the Packers current group did, what would be said about that?
Just looking for a little consistency here……

I know. That’s the point. There are some who will never grow beyond the “my daddy can beat up your daddy” phase. However, some might take a step back and consider things in a light like this, and for a short time, maybe, we might get an unbiased view from Packer land from some of these posters. It can be hoped….
