Colt McCoy mentioned on the roster bubble

Perhaps it was just a throw-away line, but we doubt it.

Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer came up with a list of Browns that could need good showings in the final two preseason games to make the roster, and mentioned rookie quarterback Colt McCoy.

The late third round pick has completed 5-of-12 passes for 25 yards with two interceptions and two sacks taken in two appearances. Perhaps coach Eric Mangini doesn’t have much use for McCoy, but it’s hard to imagine G.M. Mike Holmgren giving up on McCoy so quickly. The Texas product would seemingly be unlikely to make it through waivers if the Browns tried to put him on the practice squad.

Mangini may love quarterback Brett Ratliff, but the Browns have been pleased by Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace in the preseason. Ratliff has struggled. They don’t really need a third veteran quarterback, so cutting McCoy would make a strong statement.

Grossi also mentions 2009 second round pick David Veikune as being on the roster bubble.
