Darren Sharper looking unlikely to make early season impact

It was almost three weeks ago when we first passed along word that Saints safety Darren Sharper may not even be a starter when he returns to the field.

In the meantime, Sharper hasn’t even returned to the field. As Mike Triplette of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, there a growing possibility Sharper could be placed on the PUP list to start the year, which would knock him out for the first six games of the season.

This isn’t devastating news for the Saints. They are well situated to replace Sharper with 2009 first round pick Malcolm Jenkins and there’s no need to rush Sharper back from serious knee surgery.

“I like my chances with him,” defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said when asked if he’s worried about the Vikings picking on Jenkins.

Still, it’s hard to forget the team and Sharper promising in the Spring that Sharper would be ready to roll to open training camp. They either lied than or he’s taking longer to recover from microfracture surgery than expected.
