Donovan McNabb will sit out third preseason game

Donovan McNabb’s ankle injury will prevent him from playing the team’s most important preseason game.  (Of course, being the most important preseason game is like being the most athletic PFT writer — damning with faint praise.)

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan announced the news on Tuesday, also saying fullback Mike Sellers will be out.  McNabb has missed practice the last two days.

The early announcement indicates the team has a better feel for the severity of McNabb’s injury, not that they will share that information.  At the very least, McNabb seems likely to sit out of practice until they reconvene after the game.

Starters traditionally barely suit up in the fourth preseason game, if at all.

UPDATE: “I don’t think it’s too bad,” Shanahan said.  “But it’s still real sore right now, sore
enough where he couldn’t play this week if it was regular season, so
that kind of gives you an idea.”

    surprise surprise!
Get used to it Danskins fans…. he hadn’t made it through a whole season since like 05, now he can’t even make it through preseason!!
Trent getting thrown around like a rag doll didn’t help one bit eitherdid it?!?!?!?
    Have fun this year…… 6-10!

    and it begins….
Oh and Mike Sellers should have been dumped 3 years ago, along with Phillip Daniels, Laron Landry (who’s overrated, routinely gets burned, yet still talks trash) and the entire O line..
    This franchise is a joke

Sexy Rexy and we’re on our way to the Super Bowl…..
Hey Rex has been there as many times as McNabb..

  4. parasonic says: Aug 24, 2010 3:49 PM

I’m good with that. Honestly I doubt McNabb will make it through 16 games so it will be good to see how sexy Sexy Rexy can be with the 1’s. Maybe a poor man’s Schaub? Here’s to hoping.

  5. xinellum says: Aug 24, 2010 3:49 PM

McNabb has a heck of a time when he plays against the Ravens. In Philly, Baltimore was the game he was benched in causing the initial Kolb/McNabb controversy. Now he plays half a game and can’t walk well enough to play in the following game. Granted it is a preseason game, but everybody but Brett Favre needs preseason, right?

  6. blacktoothgrin says: Aug 24, 2010 3:51 PM

Time for Sexy Rexy to show us what he’s got

  10. Philly Cheese says: Aug 24, 2010 4:03 PM

Wouldn’t surprise me if his ankle has a sports hernia and he plays 5 games at 65% health (50% effectiveness) before deciding to have surgery and miss the rest of the year.

  11. NYJALLFINGDAY says: Aug 24, 2010 4:07 PM

Damnit, I wanted to see how the defense did against McNabb.

You haters keep on hatin’. Shanahan is doing the right thing by saving McNabb, hell, he proved he could pass all over B-more, I mean he threw for 200 yds in the first half, damn. I know you want to see him and the Skins fail, but why so much hate? If I was a fan of the Chief’s I guess I would hate too. Donanvan must have felt like Ceaser when it comes to Eagle fans, good luck to ya Kolb. My guess is they’ll be crucifying you by mid season.

Good Luck with Capt Skid Mark skins fans hahahaha

Scratch that, have yall even been .500 since Montana? O and btw thanks for allowing us to draft Brian Orakpo by taking Tyson Jackson…hows that working out for you?

  20. longestlegs says: Aug 24, 2010 4:27 PM

  21. KolbFan says: Aug 24, 2010 4:28 PM

Even if his injury comprises his mythical mobility, don’t worry skins fans cause he can always rely on his incredible accuracy in the pocket…… bwahaaahahah

  22. LAEaglefan says: Aug 24, 2010 4:29 PM

Donovan McNabb can’t run for his life like he used to so he is more prone to injuries as he gets older. That’s probably as much of a reason as any why the Eagles dumped him. They couldn’t see giving a 35 year old QB a new contract who could no longer escape the deficiences of the offensive line.

  23. boysroll says: Aug 24, 2010 4:30 PM

wow..grossman leading this sinking ship already….hey mamma tried…you are to generous predicting 6-10. 2-14 more like it….LMFAO.
    This org is a joke.

  24. MagicMan407 says: Aug 24, 2010 4:30 PM

Nooooooo! Hopefully he’ll be fine for the reg season! Dang you other dudes hatin on us man injuries suck! I don’t want to waste my NFL ticket again and go to a few more crappy home games. I would atleast rather watch Mcnabb struggle than Grossman. I hope this doesn’t suck this year again.

  25. db3300 says: Aug 24, 2010 4:34 PM

    You both suck.

  26. JayDLawII says: Aug 24, 2010 4:48 PM

c’mon people, McNabb shouldn’t have been in that preseason game as long as he was! I understand that bashing McNabb is popular now, especially since he is not on the Eagles, but this is classic Shanahan being a hard ass! Just look at his comment “i dont think it’s that bad but he wouldn’t be able to play a regular season game on it”. Shanahan has authority issues and it will be to the determent of the Skins. Why doesn he even want to go to a 3-4 defense, other then to say that he can when all of the personnel from a very good defense last year fit well in the 4-3 scheme. Shanahan is a dick pure and simple.

  27. Cleg says: Aug 24, 2010 5:15 PM

Eagle fans will miss McNabb more than they realize. It amazes me how much smack those fans talk for a team that has never won a super bowl and who last won a Championship 50 years ago. So, yeah, go ahead Philly fans laugh all you want.

  28. Heinekenfun says: Aug 24, 2010 5:23 PM

I live in DC and the Skins are a joke… They are going to be terrible again this year… It has already been shown that you cant just buy an allstar team in foobtall. I dont know why you would bring how much money you spend as a valid point. You over pay crappy players.. good work .. GO SKINS! Landry is WAY overrated when he makes a routine tackle for a first down he is jumping around like they just won the Superbowl …… AND FED EX is a JOKE of a stadium. NOT SAYING THE BILLS ARE ANY GOOD its just the redskins fans drink way too much KOOLAID and talk sh*t after a 4-12 season.

  30. Mooch says: Aug 24, 2010 5:26 PM

“Shanahan is doing the right thing by saving McNabb, ”
Yeah – after he negligently over-used him in a preseason game against a defense that loves to hurt QB’s.
Is there anything Shanahan is good at? Aside from handing the ball to Elway and Davis?
At least Switzer knew how to manage personalities, which is more than I can say for Mike “High School JV” Shanahan.
I feel sorry for you guys, this is gonna set your franchise back – yet again.

  31. rickvaldez says: Aug 24, 2010 5:32 PM

Do you even bother to notice Williams got no help on Suggs which he would if it was a regular season game. How many tackles could block him 1 on 1 and not give up a sack? Oh yeah I’m sure would say Free could do it…
And really a Chiefs fan talking about another team…Anybody with common sense wouldnt admit being a fan of that team

  33. Matt Cribbin says: Aug 24, 2010 5:58 PM

the skins were 4-12 last year. Easily could have been 6-10. Now you’re predicting 2-14? God you people are dumb. 8-8 minimum. 9-7 likely. Not bad for a thrown together team with a new system. The era has begun. Skins will be relevant these next few years, if the CBA comes through. HAIL!

  34. AlphaQ2 says: Aug 24, 2010 6:19 PM

This is being overblown. McNabb won’t play the last preseason game either. No more game tape for Dallas….HaHa. Skins will win week one. Book it.

  35. smiley says: Aug 24, 2010 6:24 PM

First of all he wasn’t hurt running the ball. It was due to a blowed (thanks Emmitt) assignment. Shanahn has 3 Super Bowl rings….that’s what he’s got. And, better safe than sorry with McNabb right now. Just get em’ healthy for Dallass! Hail!

  36. Mooch says: Aug 24, 2010 6:27 PM

Dude, what are you smokin’? I was there. McNabb threw against fourth and a fifth string corners (becuase of Ravens injuries), and then they took out the pass rushers in the second quarter. Even so, he spent the whole damn half running for his life. It’s a wonder his ankle didn’t fall off!

alpha2: you are out of your mind if you think you have seen anything from this team’s preseason to indicate they can play with dallas, even on a bad day for the boys. if i recall, even on dallas’ worst game last year, the skins gacked at the end…
capsfan and ocho: just wondering how you feel up there on the high horse regarding the skins re the chiefs. it seems to me the skins and the chiefs played last year. i’m thinking you already know who won. in my mind, the best team is usually decided on the field, not in the imagination of the fans who think this version of the skins has some similarity with the glory of the past. so let the guy in k.c. have his moment and stfu until you have some reason not to.
you are the same people that said last year that haynesworth was the missing piece.
here’s the scoop: shanny isn’t playing don because the jets would probably kick his ass worse than the ravens. shanny has now seen his deficiencies first hand and now knows why andy let him go within the division.
won’t throw it on time, holds it rather than chance the int ratio, and never got any better at any of the things most vet qbs absorb over the years; like throwing the ball away rather than taking the drive ending sack, management of the clock, learning to feather the ball rather than throwing line drives.
another thing not usually noticed is that don’s wrs always average way more drops than the league in general; i bet the skins receivers continue to have the same problem. he throws a heavy ball with no finesse.
other than that, the skins should go 12-4 and win the division….not

  45. RyanT. says: Aug 25, 2010 1:20 AM

I love how delusional ESPN and Redskins fans were annoiting Donny Mac the mircale worker, without noting the fact that he hasn’t played a full 16 game season free of injury in the last 6 years!
I like McNabb and I am praying for him: he couldn’t stay healthy with the Eagles vastly superior offensive line, so let’s all hope the Redskins pathetic o-line doesn’t get Donny Mac killed out there!
Redskins 5-11 and McNabb will miss at least 5 games due to injury.

  46. Route36West says: Aug 25, 2010 3:24 AM

UPDATE: “I don’t think it’s too bad,” Shanahan said.
OMG. I cant believe he said. He said Mcnabb is faking it just like Haynesworth. OMG. I cant believe is calling Mcnabb out in the media. Not only is he not sticking up for him hes putting him down. Mcnabb will remember this for the rest of his life. It will be the first thing he brings up once he leaves the Redskins even if its 10 years from now. OMG.
“But it’s still real sore right now, sore enough where he couldn’t play this week if it was regular season, so that kind of gives you an idea.”
OMG hes calling Mcnabb weak. He said HE COULDNT PLAY if it was regular season. Not that no one couldnt play with it. OMG. Hes saying Mcnabb doesnt gut it out and is weak. OMG. Hes tearing him up in the media. They are almost as bad as Andy Reid and the Eagles front office. OMG.
But seriously this is what you get from Mcnabb since 04. Minimum 2 missed games because of injuries 2 horrible games because hes Mcnabb and alot of pointing the finger. I dont want to hear Redskins fans complain about injuries the Eagles have been dealing with it for 5 years and last year had more injuries then any team and still went 11-5. After every offseason redskins fans think they just bought a superbowl and every year its a failure. This year wont be any different. I cant wait till week 8 and your team is 3-5(or 2-5 if theres a bye) I bet Ill stop seeing all you Redskins fans typing HAIL.

  47. MrExcite says: Aug 25, 2010 7:16 AM

Shanny broke out the lie detector, hooked it up to McNabb’s ankle, and asked the ankle where it was on the night of August 21st . . . the ankle gave some cock-a-mamee story about picking up it’s dry cleaning and then heading straight home without stopping at the Ta Ta club.
Shanahan flew into a rage when the results clearly showed that ankles do not need dry cleaning, and immediately forced the ankle to run a conditioning drill in under 5 minutes. The ankle was quoted in the Washington Post as stating “Haynesworth’s fat ass warned me about this kind of treatment. I’m calling Mama McNabb and we’re gonna get this cleared up once and for all.”
Yeah, I know this is a silly way of portraying Shanahan and McNabb. Hell, we all know ankles do their on laundry anyway . . .

  48. MagicMan407 says: Aug 25, 2010 8:52 AM

The game wasnt against back-ups. Typically NFL teams will play the the 1st half hard in the 2nd pre-season game. The 3rd and 4th games will be more or less the back-ups just trying to make the team. The only CB out was Foxworth and I think hes out for a while. The Redskins just threw the ball and tested the recievers Mcnabb did decent besides one pick. Would have been a decent game if it was regular season. I doubt they would have attempted a fake punt in that situation in a regular season game.
“HAIL, HTTR” those won’t end we have had enough bad seasons. We still do it. We are true fans in DC win or lose.
