Donovan McNabb will sit out third preseason game

Donovan McNabb’s ankle injury will prevent him from playing the team’s most important preseason game. (Of course, being the most important preseason game is like being the most athletic PFT writer -- damning with faint praise.)

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan announced the news on Tuesday, also saying fullback Mike Sellers will be out. McNabb has missed practice the last two days.

The early announcement indicates the team has a better feel for the severity of McNabb’s injury, not that they will share that information. At the very least, McNabb seems likely to sit out of practice until they reconvene after the game.

Starters traditionally barely suit up in the fourth preseason game, if at all.

UPDATE: “I don’t think it’s too bad,” Shanahan said. “But it’s still real sore right now, sore enough where he couldn’t play this week if it was regular season, so that kind of gives you an idea.”
