Ryan Mathews takes extreme measures to stop nosebleeds

Chargers tailback Ryan Mathews experiences nosebleeds.  He’s had the problem since his high-school playing days.

And so he has opted instead to have a red-hot poker jammed up his nose.  Literally.

According to the Associated Press, Mathews’ nose has been cauterized in an effort to stop the bleeding, literally.

“It feels like I have a cold right now because I’m so stuffed up,” Mathews said. “It wasn’t fun, but hopefully it works.”

If Mathews thought that having a red-hot poker jammed up his nose, literally, was fun, then we’d be concerned.

It also sounds like it wasn’t Mathews’ idea to have a red-hot poker jammed up his nose.  “I’ve been getting them on and off for a while,” Mathews said.  “It’s not
like the nose bleeds forever or anything, but it is an inconvenience.
It normally happens when I get hit pretty good, but it can also just
start due to dry weather.  The team thought it was a good idea to shore
it up.”

And if G.M. A.J. Smith thinks that having a red-hot poker jammed up a player’s nose, literally, is fun, then we suddenly understand why A.J. Smith does many of the things that he does.

I’ll bet A.J. Smith wants to have a red-hot poker shoved up Vincent Jackson…

Don’t ask me how this stuff works, but it does. My wife (and this could be TMI) had hot water inserted into her hoo hoo because Aunt Flow would not ride the cotton pony, rather drown the poor thing. This hot water thing caused her to stop her menstruation cycles. The time of month is still there mentally but no longer is she setting mouse traps.

Can you possible fit “red hot poker” in your posting one more time? I mean four times just doesnt get your point across.

Cauterizing capillaries in the nose is fairly common. I’ve had it done myself many times. The problem is that it rarely works for long. The scab will pop off and you are back to square one. But, I wish him luck with it.
Still, I hope that the dude doesn’t opt for this procedure relative to his colon.

Seriously, there has got to be something in the by-laws of manhood that prohibits any discussion of your wife’s menstrual cycle on a website about football.

It was probably as bad as when they cauterized the tubes during my vasectomy. That, also, wasn’t fun.

Mathews should stop complaining. I had this done like 3 times when I was about 8 years old, and I survived. You’d think they were branding him for life with the Chargers logo, the way he is going on about it.
Come to think of it, being branded with the Chargers logo would be pretty awful.

Your Wife’s story may affect Ryan Matthews draft position in my fantasy draft this weekend. Thank you for sharing that….

This isn’t an “extreme” measure. I had it done when I was 14 and didn’t even feel anything. It’s just a tiny little metal rod. It took less than a minute to do the actual procedure, and I’ve never had a nosebleed since.

  18. TheWizard says: Aug 25, 2010 9:46 AM

I had both sides done a decade or more apart.
It’s a hell of a lot better than putting up with spontaneous nosebleeds.

  19. jd says: Aug 25, 2010 9:51 AM

This only works if you get it done once. If the nosebleeds keep coming, he should just try cayenne pepper pills.

Tell Dez Bryant to quit bitching about carrying pads. This is some real hazing…

  21. stiller43 says: Aug 25, 2010 10:09 AM

    It’s actually a common thing.
I get them sometimes 3 times a day for absolutely no reason.
It’s commonly because a blood vessel is too close to the skin, ergo the doctor goes in and cauterizes it, but it’s not with a red hot poker.
It’s a stick with a chemical mix on the tip that burns you to heal you. I know the mix has nickel in it, not sure what else…

  24. jtasch says: Aug 25, 2010 10:22 AM

I had the same problem…got my nose cauterized and haven’t had a nose bleed since. Felt weird for about 10 minutes afterward and that was it. Definitely worth it.

  25. nniifu says: Aug 25, 2010 10:28 AM

Last time a doctor got near me with a cauterizing pen, he caught my foot on fire, literally.
Topical anesthetic was flammable. Thanks Doc, always wondered how I’d deal with 2nd degree burns to my foot. Now I know.

  26. Brohamma says: Aug 25, 2010 10:32 AM

Interesting. You guys wouldn’t post my YouTube clip showing the procedure?? It’s not graphic at all; in fact, it’s far less graphic than your rantings of a “red hot poker.” If you had taken the time to review the clip then you’d have seen how far-fetched your description really is.
The cauterization is done chemically. That means there is a small amount of silver nitrate on the end of a rod the size of a chopstick. The tissue surrounding the wound, and the wound itself, reacts to the silver nitrate by “burning,” chemically.
So throwaway the hot branding iron in the open fire there Brokeback Mike and move into the present.

    ===============================
What the hell are you talking about? This is the extent of his complaining:
“It feels like I have a cold right now because I’m so stuffed up,” Mathews said. “It wasn’t fun, but hopefully it works.”
That’s it. That’s “going on and on about it”? Florio is the one who keeps talking about hot pokers, not Matthews.
Just another PFT poster letting his fanboy bias distort what he reads. If this guy played for your team, you probably would have posted something about how brave he is.

  28. Dbellina says: Aug 25, 2010 10:47 AM

Getting your nose cauterized doesn’t always help. I had to get it done three times for mine to stop bleeding. Two by chemical and one by the “solder iron” method.

  33. VoxVagina says: Aug 25, 2010 10:06 PM

I have the same problem, but cauterizing it really didn’t do anything. I would still bleed profusely. Eventually they just kind of stopped and I kept my fingers crossed. Hope Matthews gets rid of the problem
